HABERMANN, FRANÇOIS XAVIER (1721-1796)
Augsburg: Academie Imperiale d'Empire des Arts, 1775. Hand-coloured engravings on laid paper 14 3/8 x 18 1/2 inches each. Images: 9 7/8 x 15 3/8 inches each. With captions in French and German below the image. 4 Vue d'Optiques of Quebec by François Habermann and Balthazar Leeizelt"In considering the fictitous views of Canada, made up wholly from the imagination of engravers assisted by what they had heard from travellers, the names of François Xavier Habermann and Balthazar Freric Leeizelt... easily come first. Their Collection of Prospects was completely the product of a fertile imagination... quite unassisted by fact. The astonished collector comes across these well-drawn.... coloured etchings, having the strange peculiarity of the title at the top of the print reading backwards [as with the present image]... These prints were probably published about 1775. Habermann's views of New York, done about the same time are equally fictitious'. (Spendlove The Face of Early Canada p.83).Vue d'optique perspective views were a form of entertainment meant to be seen through in special devices called Zograscopes or optical diagonal machines. Drawn with an exaggerated one-point perspective, each print took on a nearly three-dimensional appearance when viewed in the mirror through the optique lens. The name of the print at the top was reversed in the mirror and thus right-reading when viewed in this device. The strong hand color that distinguishes these views worked better when viewed in the zograscope under low light.Present here are four views François Habermann … [Click Below for Full Description]

ROBERT DE VAUGONDY, Didier (1723-1786)
Paris: Vaugondy, 1775. Copper-engraved map, with period hand-colouring in outline. Inset of the Northwest coast. Contemporary manuscript addition of the island of Bermuda. A very fine eighteenth-century map depicting all of North America, by one of France's greatest cartographers: this issue with significant additions to the northwest coast. This highly attractive map depicts North America during an especially fascinating time in its history, the period immediately before the American Revolution. Vaugondy consulted several sources in devising his map including Bellin's excellent rendering of the Great Lakes, and Guillame De L'Isle's and Jean-Baptiste D'Anville's maps of the Mississippi Basin. The British Thirteen Colonies hug the Atlantic seaboard, while the immense Gallic empire, embracing both New France (Canada) and Louisiana (the Mississippi Basin) occupy the majority of the interior of the continent. This highly detailed map labels numerous native villages and European forts in the interior of the continent. Spanish Mexico reaches all the way north to modern-day Colorado, and Baja California is shown accurately to be a peninsula, and not an island as previously thought. The map also depicts the islands of the Caribbean, which are shown to be in the possession of the various European powers. The map was first issued in the 1750s, though in the present "corrected" issue of 1775, the cartouche has been moved to the upper right corner (and re-designed) and a large inset of the Northwest coast appears in the upper left. This includes information gleaned from a number of … [Click Below for Full Description]

FLIP BOOK - FRENCH].
Cf. Gumuchian 3843-3846, esp. 3843; KVK & WorldCat (1 copy of similar flip book); Stafford & Terpak, Devices of wonder, pp. 252-255. Extremely rare engraved conjuror's "magic book", also known as a flip book or blow book, displaying eight different series of pages, namely seven series of hand-coloured engravings plus a series of blank pages. Remarkably, it is here preserved with the single page explaining how to use the book tipped onto the first (blank) page and in its original wrappers as published. The fore-edge has tabs that vary from 1/5 to 4/5 of the length, sometimes from the head and sometimes from the foot, so that flipping through the book from back to front you can chose which series of engravings will appear by shifting your thumb between the five positions from head to foot with the book rightside up or upside down. The seven series of coloured engravings show playing cards, mother superiors, flowers, soldiers, abbots, priests and harlequins. So if you wish to perform a conjuring trick you can first flip through the book so that only the blank leaves appear and the audience thinks the book is blank. You can then tap it with a wand, blow on it or carry out some other magical action and flip through again so the a series of flowers magically appears in what seemed to be a blank book. You can then continue to magically change it to show each of the other series in turn. On 4 pages the caption has been shaved. The fore-edge tabs of the first few and last few leaves are slightly tattered, the black pips on the cards occasionally show through on the other side of the … [Click Below for Full Description]

Demy 8vo (22cm) (2), 384, (2) pp; with 12 line errata at the back; small floral colophon to the titlepage, which is slightly spotted; scattered spotting and areas of toning throughout, though not in any way obfuscating; newly rebound in calf gilt with a grecian urn design amid swirls and swags to the spine and the title label in red morocco; single gilt border around the edges of the boards. A most attractive copy and a fine example of the modern binder's craft. First Edition, first printing. A most attractive copy and a fine example of the modern binder's craft. Dr Johnson's classic travel narrative traces his 83 day journey through northern Scotland and the western islands, in particular the Hebrides, in the late summer and autumn of 1773. Dr Johnson's classic travel narrative, of which only 2000 copies were originally printed, traces his 83 day journey through northern Scotland and the western islands, in particular the Hebrides, in the late summer and autumn of 1773. It contains fascinating observations on the social customs and political conditions of the day while also observing agricultural and farming practices, the local wildlife and scenery, all accompanied by a poignant, personal commentary on the inhabitants of the region. The 63-year-old Johnson was accompanied by his 32-year-old friend James Boswell, whose record of the trip was published in 1785 as 'A Journal of a Tour to the Hebrides'. The two narratives are often published as a single volume, which is beneficial … [Click Below for Full Description]

Johnson Dr. Samuel
W. Strahan and T. Cadell, 1775. First Edition First Printing Twelve-line errata leaves D8 and U4 are cancels with the uncorrected page number 226 on page 296. Leaves D8 and U4 are 34cancels34 because just after the initial binding was completed Johnson decided that changes to these two leaves were essential. In this process the verso of leaf U4 was mistakenly numbered 226 instead of the correct 296. The book has no half-title because the title-page errata-leaf and the two cancel leaves were printed together as a half-sheet. Re-bound in recent full rust cloth gilt lettering on black label on spine tan endpapers. Chapman Hazen p. 151-52Courtney Smith pp. 122-23Fleeman 75.1J1aRothschild 1257ESTC T84319. . (Cavalieri, Giovanni Battista)
Bassani (Bassano) & Venice: Remondini, 1775. Hardcover. Good. 2 volumes, published 1775, large 8vo, vellum, the first volume has 31 pp. text, 127 plates, the second volume has 30 pp. text, 123 plates, for a total of 250 engraved portraits of all the popes up to Pius VI, who was made Pope in 1775 and reigned until 1799, all plates have contemporary (that is, 18th century) HAND COLORING, very rare thus. Good set, some wear and wrinkling to vellum bindings, the 11th plate (S. Pio I d'Acquileja) has some loss to the image, and the plates of the second volume show a faint tide mark from old damp staining to bottom margin and occasionally to the top outer corner, but the coloration and images remain vibrant and bright. Very uncommon with such coloring.

[COOK: NEWFOUNDLAND SURVEY] COOK, James, Joseph GILBERT and Michael LANE.
London: Printed for R. Sayer & I. Bennet at No. 53 in Fleet Street, "10 May 1770" but issued 1775. Double page engraved chart, 518 x 716 mm. A splendid map from the Newfoundland Survey, the project which established Cook's reputation and ultimately led to his appointment to the command of the Endeavour. Gilbert had surveyed the coast of Labrador between St. Peter's Bay and Cape Bluff in 1767 and the following year charted the coast of southeast Newfoundland between the Bay of Placentia and Conception Bay, which survey was the basis for this chart, with additions from Lane's 1772-73 surveys. Gilbert would later serve as master of the Resolution on Cook's second voyage. Recently the Newfoundland charts were used in the BBC series on Cook hosted by Vanessa Collingridge, in which the survey work was overlaid with satellite photographs to demonstrate its fundamental accuracy. Cook's charts were first published in 1769, under the title "A Collection Of Charts", but containing only ten maps; in 1769-1770 they were republished with additions by Jefferys as part of the first appearance of The North-American Pilot, very rare today. The maps were also available separately over the following years. This is an example of the second state of the map, with Sayer and Bennett's 1770 imprint, but identified by the number "III" in the top margin and a note of the magnetic variation for 1773, prepared for the 1775 issue of the Pilot. "Cook started by surveying the northwest stretch of coastline in 1763 and 1764, then in 1765 and 1766 the south coast between Cape Ray and the Burin Peninsula, an … [Click Below for Full Description]

Wherein are Impartially delineated his Military Talents in the Field; his Maxims of Government in the Cabinet, during the two last Wars in the East Indies, which made him Arbiter of Empire, and the richest Subject in Europe. With Anecdotes of his Private Life, and the Particular Circumstances of his Death. Also a Narrative of all the last Transactions in India. 4 volumes, octavo (213 x 126 mm). Contemporary trade binding of unlettered half sheep, gilt volume numbers direct to spines, marbled sides. Engraved portrait frontispiece of Clive, folding map to vol. I ("An Accurate Map of India", title within a pretty rococo cartouche). Contemporary bookplates somewhat hastily removed from pastedowns by a previous owner (with stripping of paper). Heads of spines and corners professionally refurbished, text-blocks lightly toned. A very good set with the half-titles. First edition of the first biography of Clive, the initial volume issued in the year following his death; it is certainly uncommon and this is a most appealing set in a contemporary plain trade binding. The putative author is the French-born topographer Charles Caraccioli (b. 1722?), of whom little is known although ODNB notes that "it seems likely that as a young man Charles left for the French colony at Pondicherry, but moved to Britain during the hostilities of the 1750s". However, in his study of Sir John Malcolm, historian Jack Harrington notes that the "pseudonymous authors of this first Life of Clive (1775), who had used the name 'Charles Caraccioli,' are … [Click Below for Full Description]
