(Higgs, 6196. INED, 3201. Goldsmiths'-Kress, ‘Online catalogue’, n°11229.Tchemerzine-Scheler, IV, 756). Petits accrocs aux coiffes. Infirme déchirure sans perte aux 3 prem. feuillets. Bel exemplaire, très bien relié à l'époque. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Pour servir de suite a l'histoire philosophique & politique by William Bolts (1740?-1808) 2 volumes in 1. xxxii+166 pages with frontispiece; 170 pages with frontispiece and index. Small octavo (7 1/2" x 5 1/4") bound in full leather with gilt decoration and lettering to spine and gilt ruled edges with ribbon markers. First published in 1770 (Amsterdam).Guillaume Thomas Raynal was a French writer and man of letters during the Age of Enlightenment. In his Histoire philosophique des deux Indes, he had the assistance of various members of the philosophe côteries. Diderot is credited with a third of this work. The other chief collaborators were Pechméja, Baron d'Holbach, Paulze, Abbé Martin, and Alexandre Deleyre. The "philosophic" declamations perhaps constituted its chief interest for the general public, and its significance as a contribution to democratic propaganda. The Histoire went through many editions, being revised and augmented from time to time by Raynal; it was translated into the principal European languages, and appeared in various abridgments. Its introduction into France was forbidden in 1779; the book was burned by the public executioner, and an order was given for the arrest of the author, whose name had not appeared in the first edition. The book examines the East Indies, South America, the West Indies, and North America. The final chapter comprises theory around the future of Europe as a whole. Raynal also examines commerce, religion, slavery, and other popular subjects, all with a perspective from the French Enlightenment. Additional versions of the book included maps of the discussed regions.William Bolts was a Dutch-born eighteenth-century merchant active in India. He began his career as an employee of the British East India Company, and subsequently became an independent merchant. He is best known today for his 1772 book, Considerations on India Affairs, which detailed the exploitation and despoliation of Bengal by the East India Company which began shortly after the Battle of Plassey in 1757. The observations and experiences he recorded offer a unique resource for scholars inquiring into the nature of early British rule in Bengal. Throughout his life, Bolts continued to propose and execute various trading ventures on his own behalf and in conjunction with various commercial and governmental partners. The ventures of individual traders like Bolts did much to spur governments and large corporations into the expansion of their own interests and empires.Condition:Corners bumped, corners gently bumped lacks the map for volume eight, Bolt's work else a very good set.

[AUTOGRAPH DOCUMENT, SIGNED BY OLIVER ELLSWORTH AND THOMAS SEYMOUR, AUTHORIZING PAYMENT TO THE FAIRFIELD MILITIA DURING THE FIRST MONTHS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION]

Hartford, 1775. [1]p., measuring 6 x 8 inches, ten lines of text; docketed on verso. Old fold lines. Minor soiling Near fine. Key manuscript document, written and signed by Oliver Ellsworth, revealing the interaction between the colonies during the earliest stages of the American Revolution, and the financial interchanges that fueled the rebellion. Ellsworth served in several Connecticut government positions during the Revolution, including as a delegate to the Continental Congress. He was one of the five- member committee that drafted the Constitution at the Constitutional Convention in 1787, playing an important role in the drafting of the Connecticut Compromise, which gave equal representation to large and small states in the Senate; Ellsworth left the Convention, however, before the final draft was completed and is not counted among the Signers. He subsequently served as a U.S. Senator (1789-96) and as the third Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Following the alarm raised by the battles at Lexington and Concord in April 1775, militiamen from across the colonies gathered at Boston - this body would become the Continental Army, and the Revolutionary War had begun. In this document, Ellsworth and Thomas Seymour authorize Connecticut Treasurer Jonathan Lawrence to "Pay the Select Men of Fairfield Five pounds Five Shilling & nine pence in Bills - in part the Expence of the Inhabitants of sd. Town who marched towards Boston & to N. York in Alarm last Spring - & Necessaries supplied the Rifle Battalion marching thru this colony to camp at Cambridge...." Signed by Ellsworth and Seymour on the recto, and by Thaddeus Burr, acknowledging receipt of the funds, on the verso, along with docketing. A wonderful piece, in lovely condition, from the opening months of the Revolution.

Brooks, 203 ; Tchemerzine, II, 481. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Catharina Helena Stöber or Stöberin

1775. Etching with engraved text on laid paper; 230 x 166 mm (9 c x 6 ˝ inches) Schuster 374. This is a souvenir portrait of Catharina Helena , a little person who was only two foot four inches (ca. 70 cm) in height. She is shown posing jauntily on a tabletop wearing a dress with a low neckline, and an open overskirt with lace and ribbons, and a decorative hat. Catharina Helena Stöber was exhibited in fairs all over Germany. She toured from her teens well into middle age with her father Johann who managed the exhibition. Her exhibition is said to have been very popular and to have made a great deal of money. (Katritzky p.119 quoting Rudin, Lebenselixier, 72, 77, 137.164). Stöber was known for her perfect proportions and for her elegant dress (as pictured here). There are at least three other images of her held at the Herzog August Bibliothek Wolfenbütel, one of them by Nilson (a variation of our picturing the subject without her hat), all of them extremely rare. The Artist Johann Esaias Nilson was an important portrait artist, miniaturist and engraver and editor from Augsburg. He trained under Johann Thomas Kraus (1696-1775) in the fundamentals of architecture and in perspective. Ref: Katritzky, M. A.       Joseph Kurzböck, 1775 - (8), 307 pp, (1). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
