The Hon.ble John Hancock. of Boston in New-England; President of the American Congress. Done from an original picture painted by Littleford

      C. Shepherd, London 1775 - Mezzotint portrait. Wide margins. Minor creases. A British portrait of one of the leading American Revolutionary war leaders. Public curiosity for prints of Revolutionary heroes was not limited to America but spread to the English and European print shops, where an inquisitive audience clamored for a glimpse of the key figures of the war. London and Augsburg publishers, using the names C. Shepard, Thomas Hart, and John Morris, issued a series of mezzotints of the officers of the American Revolution. Public interest reached such a frenzy that European printmakers published fictitious portraits before they had accurate likenesses of the sitters, often using old plates and simply changing the name of the sitter. This porthole portrait of Hancock may have been based on a Copley painted portrait, though it claims to be after "Littleford". Littleford is thought to have been a fictitious portraitist and the resemblance to Hancock is somewhat remote. Nevertheless, the figure is commanding and a gentleman, such as might well be President of the Continental Congress. As Fowble noted: "As president of the Continental Congress in 1775, Hancock was newsworthy in both London and the colonies, and he was a tailor-made subject for print publishers. Some entrepreneurs, like Shelpherd in his anxiety to get the first prints on the street, were willing to supplement truth with a generous portion of fiction." Fowble Two Centuries of Prints in America 1680-1880 #63; Russell ENA III.6; Smith British Mezzotinto Portraits III.5.

Women's Manuscript Prayer Book in Hebrew. Scribe: Yechiel Menachem Ben Abraham Urbino

Italy, 1775 Manuscript on paper, Italian Hebrew script. 28 leaves, Hebrew. 12mo (4 ½ x 2 7/8 in.). Title within intricately decorated floriated and scrolled border. A few leaves loose. Old sheep backed paper boards, worn, lacking lower portion of spine. Half morocco case. This delicate and rare manuscript, prepared exclusively for women includes prayers for healthy and righteous children, a comfortable livelihood, the Mikveh, pregnancy, candle lightening, and the separation of Challah. This tiny book is a scarce survival from a period when women were exempt from the obligation to recite the daily prayers. Thus it provides an illuminating practical perspective on the special realm of women's spirituality. This manuscript prayer book is a fine example of the scribal arts employed by the Jewish community in creating sacred books and ritual objects.

Early ownership label to front pastedown. Extremities rubbed, spine ends bumped, boards lightly scuffed, front pastedown a little stripped and discoloured from removal of bookplate, front hinge cracked but firm, minor loss to leaf R3 not affecting text, overall a bright, clean copy. First edition of the principal work of the French economist Paul Boesnier de l'Orme (1724–1793), "one of the most systematic and comprehensive expositions of economics of its period" (Higgs). This copy has the imprint of Debure, as do the Mattioli and Sraffa copies, but some have the imprint of Delalaine (no priority established). It is both institutionally and commercially scarce as the book was "suppressed because it attacked the Fermieres Généraux" (Sraffa Library). Copac locates just one copy with the Debure imprint in British and Irish institutional libraries (Cambridge), and OCLC adds six more worldwide.

        POEMS

London: Thomas Evans, [1775]. A fine and very early printing of Shakespeare's Poems. A Large Copy. With a charming vignette portrait of Shakespeare on the title-page from an engraving by Alexander Bannerman. Small 8vo, in handsome full chocolate crushed morocco, the spine with gilt chain flat bands creating compartments with central gilt tooled ornaments, one compartment gilt lettered, board edges gilt hatched, in a slipcase of complimentary brown cloth-covered boards with matching morocco tips. viii, 250pp. A fine copy, the text especially clean and fresh, the 20th century binding pristine and as new, the slipcase fine as well. SCARCE AND A VERY ATTRACTIVE EDITION OF SHAKESPEARE'S POEMS, VERY POSSIBLY A LARGE PAPER COPY. According to Jaggard, "a large paper copy (the only one recorded), measuring 7-1/8 by 4-1/2 in., is in the writer's collection." Our copy measures 7 x 4-1/2 inches and might perhaps qualify as a large-paper copy.) The book is printed in the same style as Capell's 1767-6 issue of the Works, and probably intended to be supplementary to it. The arrangement follows that of the 1640 edition, but in this case the index now names every poem. Jaggard speculates that the editor might have been E. Capell. Shakespeare's first published works were poems, starting with Venus and Adonis in 1593. A tragic-comedy of Venus, her unrequited love for Adonis, and Adonis's tragic death while hunting a boar. In the Rape of Lucrece, Shakespeare's second published work, the rape of a Roman noblewoman leads to suicide and the downfall of the Tarquin kings of Rome. "Poems on Several Occasions" finishes the volume. A collection of various subjects, dominated by Shakespeare's favorite poetic theme, poems of love. "Love's not times fool, tho' rosy lips and cheeksWithin his bending fickle's compass come:Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks, But bears it out even to the edge of doom. If this be error, and upon me proved, I never writ, nor no man ever loved." -The Picture of True Love

The Duenna or Double Elopement, a Comic-Opera as Performed at the Theatre Royal in Covent Garden for the Voice, Harpsichord, or Violin

      C. and S. Thompson, London 1775 - First edition. Engraved title-page, engraved table of songs, 57 pp. engraved music. [4], 58 pp. Oblong 4to. Rare first edition of the score of Sheridan's The Duenna. Following the success of The Rivals, Sheridan engaged the help of his father-in-law, Thomas Linley, Sr, to score the libretto to his next major project, a three-act burlesque opera set in Seville and based loosely on the Spanish honor drama. The score is a mix of original compositions and melodies gathered from Italian opera and Scottish folk ballads (these melodies were harmonized by Linley's son, Thomas Linley, Jr). The Duenna premiered at Covent Garden on 21 November 1775 and was an immediate success, running for 75 shows in its first season. It was frequently revived through the 19th century, becoming one of the most successful English operas of its time. Byron praised it as "the best opera ever written." The score is printed here in reduced form for voice and accompaniment; no full printed score of the opera exists. Slip-song printings of the text of individual songs were issued in 1775, along with a gathering of the libretto text under the title Songs, Duets, & Trios. The libretto and dialogue were pirated in a Dublin edition in 1777 under the title The Governess and again in 1785 as The Duenna; the first authorized edition was finally published in 1794. In 1940 Prokofiev rescored the libretto as Betrothal in a Monastery.Rare: ABPC records no copies at auction, and ESTC locates 8 copies (4 at the Bodleian). Scilla in tempesta / Agli amici inglesi

Opera rara e ricercata." "Copper engraving, signed by Bernardino Rollers for drawing and by Mariano Bovi for the text. It is one of the most impressive iconographies of Scilla, with the top of the castle that covers the town. The plate is populated with characters, including Minasi himself and the designers of that work. In stormy waters, even a British ship attempts to ""schivare gli scolgi di qua e di là di Scilla, pieni di morte nera"". Minasi introduces a new technique: the iconography is matched with a legend to the margin of the press, which is a sort of ""synthesis"" of the investigations conducted by Antonio Minasi. Very good proof, printed on contemporary laid paper, perfect condition. Rare."

Bel exemplaire. DSB, X, p. 145. Ausschneidebilder].[The Netherlands?], 28 January 1777 (some of the prints themselves: Augsburg, Martin Engelbrecht, [ca. 1750?]) 4to. A scrap album containing about 330 cut-out images from engraved prints, most neatly and uniformly coloured by a contemporary hand (probably for the publisher or publishers). Contemporary half roan sheepskin, with a heart-shaped paper label on the front board with the manuscript inscription, "J. Visscher" above the date (1 above 28, flanked by "17 . 77").

      - Piet J. Buijnsters, "Het Nederlandse 'scrapbook' 1775-1900", in: Antiek XXXI, pp. 50-58, at p. 52 ; WorldCat (2 albums of Engelbrecht’s "Aufschneidebilder",); cf. B.M. Stafford & F. Terpak, Devices of wonder, p. 336. A carefully and neatly assembled scrap album containing about 330 coloured, engraved images, each carefully cut out of a print. The images show people (including costume figures, caricatures and oriental figures), boats and ships, flowers, architectural views (including garden views, fountains and sculptures), theatre prints, birds, insects, Aesop illustrations and other items. They include a large image of a man on a ladder picking fruit from a tree, and a whaling scene with a man harpooning a spouting whale. The heart-shaped label with the name J. Visscher and date 28 January 1777, suggests that the album was assembled for Visscher's betrothal or marriage on that date. Buijnsters notes that 18th-century scrapbooks such as the present are very rare. The compilation of a scrapbook became a popular pastime, especially for young ladies, in the 19th century.Nearly all of the clippings come from Engelbrecht in Augsburg and Johann Christoph Schmidhammer in Nürnberg. Martin Engelbrecht (1684-1756) was an Augsburg engraver and print publisher. In 1719, 1729 and 1739 he received an imperial privilege for "illuminierte Lackier- und Ausschneidebilder" (coloured varnished images and cut-out images). These were intended to be cut out for constructing peep shows or miniature theatres as well as for pasting in scrap albums. From the collection of Piet Buijnsters & Leontine Smets. In the last image the man's right arm and the woman's right hand have been lost, but the album leaves and engraved cut-outs are otherwise in very good condition. The binding is slightly rubbed but still good.

        Battle of Bunker Hill

, September 21, 1775. September 21, 1775. Newspaper, 4 pages, 10" x 15", printed at Harvard College for the period September 14 - September 21, 1775. Volume VIII, Number 373, belonging to Captain Eleazir Robbins and very likely signed by him on the first page above the headline. There is much content naming many of the important generals of the war, and activities in London, Lexington and Concord, Boston, Philadelphia, and at Fort Ticonderoga. Small loss at folds and two tears repaired with archival tape, else toned and lightly soiled. Just about very good condition.According to Jack Authelet, author of Foxborough: gem of Norfolk County, "Paul Revere and William Dawes spread the alarm. The British were marching to seize the stores of powder held at Lexington and Concord. Word spread quickly through the territory, and the Minute Men marched in response to the alarm. Captains Josiah Pratt and Eleazer (sic) Robbins of Stoughton (which included the present East Foxborough) commanded two of the nine companies that left Stoughton on April 19, 1775, in response to the call to arms...These officers were leading more than militia companies. They were leading friends, the sons of their neighbors, other family members, and people they saw every Sunday at worship, giving them a heightened sense of responsibility for their troops."

Ambigué magique.[Paris?, Jacques-François Chéreau?, 1775]. Large 16mo (15.5 x 11 cm). A conjuror's magic flip book (or blow book) with tabs in 5 positions, with 1 letterpress page of instructions, 168 full-page engravings (7 series of 4 prints each, each series printed 6 times) and 24 pages deliberately left blank. Contemporary dark green paper wrappers, with an engraved spine label and with a 2-page letterpress calendar for the year 1776 pasted to the inside front and back wrapper.

Cf. Gumuchian 3843-3846, esp. 3843; KVK & WorldCat (1 copy of similar flip book); Stafford & Terpak, Devices of wonder, pp. 252-255. Extremely rare engraved conjuror's "magic book", also known as a flip book or blow book, displaying eight different series of pages, namely seven series of hand-coloured engravings plus a series of blank pages. Remarkably, it is here preserved with the single page explaining how to use the book tipped onto the first (blank) page and in its original wrappers as published. The fore-edge has tabs that vary from 1/5 to 4/5 of the length, sometimes from the head and sometimes from the foot, so that flipping through the book from back to front you can chose which series of engravings will appear by shifting your thumb between the five positions from head to foot with the book rightside up or upside down. The seven series of coloured engravings show playing cards, mother superiors, flowers, soldiers, abbots, priests and harlequins. So if you wish to perform a conjuring trick you can first flip through the book so that only the blank leaves appear and the audience thinks the book is blank. You can then tap it with a wand, blow on it or carry out some other magical action and flip through again so the a series of flowers magically appears in what seemed to be a blank book. You can then continue to magically change it to show each of the other series in turn. On 4 pages the caption has been shaved. The fore-edge tabs of the first few and last few leaves are slightly tattered, the black pips on the cards occasionally show through on the other side of the leaf and a few pages show very faint offsetting, but the book is otherwise in very good condition (remarkable in this genre). The wrappers are damaged, with the back wrapper detached and part of the spine label lost. An extremely rare French flip book from 1775.

Autograph letter signed to publisher John Bell

Exeter, 1775. Downman, Hugh (1740-1809). Autograph letter signed to publisher John Bell (1735-1806). 2pp. on single sheet. Exeter, April 26, 1775. 185 x 152 mm. Some surface soiling, a few tiny holes along folds, lacuna where seal was broken (not affecting text), but on the whole very good. Downman, a physician and poet, is best known for his Infancy or the Management of Children, a didactic poem on perinatal and pediatric medicine first published in three parts in London between 1774 and 1776. Downman's poem enjoyed great popularity, going through seven editions in his lifetime, the last appearing in 1809. Downman also published several other volumes of poetry and drama, and translated some of Voltaire's work into English. The first one-volume edition of "Infancy" was published in Edinburgh by John Bell in 1776. In the present letter to Bell, written the previous year, Downman discusses issues relating to this edition: ". . . You will take care that it be correct and well printed, the price I suppose must be lower, but the two books together in octavo should not be sold I think for less than 1s & 6 pence. As it is a complete poem as far as it goes, & has a proper conclusion, I am not certain whether I shall add any more books to it, as I at first intended. Now I have here done with Infancy & if I proceed farther must advance upon Childhood, wch will not so well correspond with the title . . ." In a postscript Downman added a list of errata to be corrected in Bell's edition. Dunn, P. M., "Hugh Downman, MD (1740-1809) of Exeter and his poem on infant care." Artist: Homann Erben d ; issued in: Nuremberg; date: d1775 - - technic: Copper print; - colorit: original colored; - condition: Perfect condition; - size (in cm): 57 x 45; - description: Map shows western Prussia and the capital city of Danzig. Inset map shows Emland with the cities of Elbing and Braunsberg.; - vita of the artist: Johann Babtiste Homann (1664-1724) was born in Oberkammlach, the Electorate of Bavaria. Although educated at a Jesuit school, and preparing for an ecclesiastical career, he eventually converted to Protestantism and from 1687 worked as a civil law notary in Nuremberg. He soon turned to engraving and cartography; in 1702 he founded his own publishing house.Homann acquired renown as a leading German cartographer, and in 1715 was appointed Imperial Geographer by Emperor Charles VI. Giving such privileges to individuals was an added right that the Holy Roman Emperor enjoyed. In the same year he was also named a member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin. Of particular significance to cartography were the imperial printing privileges (Latin: privilegia impressoria). These protected for a time the authors in all scientific fields such as printers, copper engravers, map makers and publishers. They were also very important as a recommendation for potential customers. In 1716 Homann published his masterpiece Grosser Atlas ueber die ganze Welt (Grand Atlas of all the World). Numerous maps were drawn up in cooperation with the engraver Christoph Weigel the Elder, who also published Siebmachers Wappenbuch.Homann died in Nuremberg. He was succeeded by the Homann heirs company, which was in business until 1848. The company was known as Homann Erben, Homanniani Heredes, or Heritiers de Homann abroad.

[Ausschneidebilder].[The Netherlands?], 28 January 1777 (some of the prints themselves: Augsburg, Martin Engelbrecht, [ca. Visscher" above the date (1 above 28, flanked by "17 ... 77").

Piet J. Buijnsters, "Het Nederlandse 'scrapbook' 1775-1900", in: Antiek XXXI, pp. 50-58, at p. 52 ; WorldCat (2 albums of Engelbrecht's “Aufschneidebilder”,); cf.

The Hon.ble John Hancock. of Boston in New-England; President of the American Congress. Done from an original picture painted by Littleford

London: C. Shepherd, 1775. Mezzotint portrait. Wide margins. Minor creases. A British portrait of one of the leading American Revolutionary war leaders.Public curiosity for prints of Revolutionary heroes was not limited to America but spread to the English and European print shops, where an inquisitive audience clamored for a glimpse of the key figures of the war. Some entrepreneurs, like Shelpherd in his anxiety to get the first prints on the street, were willing to supplement truth with a generous portion of fiction."Fowble Two Centuries of Prints in America 1680-1880 #63; Russell ENA III.6; Smith British Mezzotinto Portraits III.5.

Women’s Manuscript Prayer Book in Hebrew. Scribe: Yechiel Menachem Ben Abraham Urbino

Italy 1775 - Manuscript on paper, Italian Hebrew script. Thus it provides an illuminating practical perspective on the special realm of women’s spirituality. This manuscript prayer book is a fine example of the scribal arts employed by the Jewish community in creating sacred books and ritual objects. [Attributes: Soft Cover]
