Oeuvres de Molière avec des remarques grammaticales; des avertissemens et des observations sur chaque pièce, par M. Bret

First printing of this edition made famous by Bret. Illustrated book of the famous portrait of Molière etched Cathelin Mignaud from the frontispiece of the first volume, 6 florets as well as 33 fine figures of Moreau Le Jeune. Undoubtedly one of the finest editions of Molière, "The sequence of figures Moreau is one of the estimated" (Cohen, 717). Pages titles in red and black. Full brown calf period. Back smooth ornate pedestal. Parts of title and volume number in red morocco. Golden caster on cuts. Triple gilt frames in dishes. Interior lace. Some corners very lightly bumped. Beautiful set comfortably established in a rich contemporary binding. This edition, much sought after for the quality of its artwork (Cochin Moreau was with one of the most loved illustrators of his day) is also good for the correction of the text that must be in the heat of Bret; it has in fact carefully revised texts based on the original editions; notes and comments, witness his work is no less interesting, and make this year one of the jewels among those of Molière.

Amsterdam, J.C. Sepp, 1773. 3 volumes (bound in 4). Folio (445 x 275mm). pp. (4), xiv, 64; (4), 1-184; (2), 185-484; (4), 236, with 1 double-page handcoloured engraved plate 'Marmer-Groeve na by Solnhofen', some engraved head- & woodcut tail-pieces and 272 hand-coloured or colour-printed engraved plates. Contemporary half calf, gilt ornamented spines in 7 compartments with red gilt lettered label, marbled sides (very minor restoration to spines). A fine copy of 'one of the best illustrated and most complete accounts on fossils...' (Landwehr 95). "The outstanding work of this period is undoubtedly that of Knorr and Walch in four volumes ... The first volume was written by the Nürnberg collector and artist, Georg Wolfgang Knorr (born 1705, died 1761), and the other three volumes were prepared after the death of Knorr by Professor Walch of Jena ..." (Zittel pp. 21-22). The rare Dutch edition of the German original 'Naturgeschichte der Versteinerungen' (Nuremberg 1768-1773) with the same beautiful plates. Volume II almost entirely concerns fossil shells. "It is hardly possible to exaggerate the beauty and fidelity of the representations of the fossils in his plates. No such illustrations had ever before appeared, and they have hardly been surpassed since. By delicate lines on the copper plates the most minute intricacies of structure are reproduced, and by thin washes of colour the tints of the original specimens are represented. His renderings of dentritic markings, landscape-marble, fossil plants, crustacea, crinoids, fishes and other fossils are admirable examples of the union of artistic workmanship with scientific accuracy ..." (Geikie, Founders of Geology, pp. 101-102). 'The extraordinary quality of the plates, representing the eighteenth-century continuation of the tradition of Dürer, led to an expansion of the work by Walch, as well as to French and Dutch editions... the detail and accuracy of Knorr's engravings not only made possible zoological classification but firmly established the distinction between fossils of organic and sports of nature' (DSB)./The books portrays and describes a.o fossils in the cabinets of famous collectors such as Walch at Jena, Adam Hildebrand at Naumberg, Jac. Theod. Klein, Johann Hermannus at Regensburg, S.R. Genzmer at Stargard, as well as the large collection of Casimir Schmidel.//Nissen ZBI, 2233; Ward & Carozzi 1285; Landwehr 95.

Descriptions of some of the Utensils in Husbandry, Rolling Carriages, Cart Rollers, and divided rollers for land or gardens, mills, weighing engines, &c. &c. Made and sold by James Sharp, No 15, Leadenhall-Street, London; which may be seen at his manufactory, No 133, Tooley-Street, Southwark.

Second edition (?), and a rare survival of an eighteenth century trade catalogue for a manufacturer of carts, agricultural machines and garden rollers. The plates show mostly agricultural machines, especially ploughs and hand-mills, but also garden rollers, a cart-roller, and carts (this plate is dated 1773). It includes a horse-hoe very similar to Tull’s original design, and a winnowing machine very similar to those still in use in the twentieth century. Apart from these products, Sharp also made weighing machines, anchors, trucks, and many smaller items such as axles and shafts.Agriculture, which was easily the largest source of employment in the eighteenth century, required advances in its technology in order to progress, and it was largely due to a lack of suitable machinery that Jethro Tull’s methods were slow to gain acceptance. This catalogue, probably among the first of its kind, shows some of the machinery and equipment that was available at the time.COPAC lists only two editions; another edition with only 28 pages and 16 plates, and with the imprint “Sold by Benjamin White...and Edward and Charles Dilly... ”, appeared in about 1777.Oblong 4to, 34 unnumbered pages and 19 engraved plates. Including the first leaf (printed title), and last leaf (docket title), woodcut on p. (29) of a “Common Stage”. Contemporary half calf (ends of spine and two corners a little worn), a beautifully preserved copy with original stab-holes visible in inner margin of some leaves, and a vertical crease down the centre (as intended, so as to show the docket title on the verso of the last leaf when folded). Contemporary armorial bookplate of Christopher Jeaffreson of Dullingham (Cambridgeshire).

Characteristicks of Men, Manners, Opinions, Times. In Three Volumes

Birmingham: Printed by John Baskerville, 1773, Birmingham - Three volumes. Pp. [2], iv, [2], 364; 443; [4], 410, [48] index. Contents leaf misbound in volume 1. Copper-engraved frontis portrait, title page vignettes, and chapter head vignettes by Simon Gribelin. Finely bound by Bayntun of Bath in three-quarter crimson morocco over marbled boards, spine elegantly gilt in compartments with central floral ornaments, titled direct in gilt, citron edges. Bindings show only slight edgewear, lacking original blanks, and errata leaf in vol. 3, fly leaves darkened, earlier armorial bookplates and another more recent; overall, a splendidly bound, remarkably clean, crisp set. The First Baskerville Edition of one of the great English philosophical works of the 18th century. First published in 1711, Shaftesbury's Characteristics is a collection of previously published essays, including "An Inquiry Concerning Virtue or Merit" (1699), "A Letter Concerning Enthusiasm" (1708), "Sensis Communis, An essay on the Freedom of Wit and Humour" (1709), "The Moralists, A Philosophical Rhapsody" (1709), and "Soliloquy, or Advice to an Author" (1710). These writings embody the author's principal ethical and aesthetic theories, presented in an elegant and refined, though entirely unsystematic fashion. In these essays, Shaftesbury argues for freedom of thought, toleration, and an enlightened view of religion. He even suggests the use of humour as an antidote to dogmatism, arguing that there is no better test of religious truth than its ability to withstand ridicule. On the subject of ethics, Shaftesbury insists that morality exists independently of religion, and - against Hobbes - that man is naturally virtuous (which is not to say that all men are actually virtuous). Here he also parts company with his childhood mentor John Locke, viewing Locke's attack on innate ideas as undermining man's essential virtue. He describes man's natural love of virtue as his "moral sense", a term which is taken up by his philosophical heirs, Francis Hutcheson and David Hume. Shaftesbury's ideas, which owed much to the 'Cambridge Platonists', achieved widespread acceptance by his contemporaries, especially the English deists, and greatly influenced such Continental thinkers as Leibnitz, Lessing, Voltaire, and Diderot.         NACHRICHTEN VON DER AMERIKANISCHEN HALBINSEL CALIFORNIEN: MIT EINEM ZWEYFACHEN ANHANG FALSCHER NACHRICHTEN.

Mannheim: Churfurstl. Hof-und Academie-Buchdruckerey, 1773. - [16],358pp. plus two engraved plates and folding map. Contemporary black half calf and marbled boards, spine gilt. Extremities lightly worn, small paper label at foot of spine. Small ink stamp on titlepage and verso of map. Minor scattered foxing. Very good. Second issue with some corrections, after the first printing of the previous year, of this rare account of Lower California by the German Jesuit, Jacob Baegert. Baegert lived in Baja California for a period of seventeen years (1751-68) and spent most of his time at the Mission of San Luis Gonzaga, leaving after the expulsion of the Jesuits in 1767. He provides some important details on the culture of the Indians of Baja California, including the Pericues, Guiacuras, and Cochiemes. Wagner states that the German Jesuits were especially dissatisfied toward the end of the Jesuit regime in California, and Baegert's bitterness is evident in his book: ".it was a land full of ferocious beasts and even more ferocious Indians, the soil was poor, the water undrinkable and there was no fuel to be had." The fine and important map was made by the fellow Jesuit, Ferdinand Consak, and is described by Streeter as "most helpful in giving the location of the many Jesuit missions in Lower California. It also shows the route along the west coast of Mexico followed by Baegert in going to California in 1751 and his route out in 1768, after the expulsion of the Jesuits." The top right corner of the territory (present day Arizona) is labeled, rather ominously, "Los Apaches Barbari." The excellent plates, which were apparently not issued with all copies, depict male and female California Indians. The NUC locates only three copies of this second issue. A prime early account of Baja California, with an important map and plates of the region. HOWES B29. HILL, p.12. COWAN, p.27. SABIN 4363. BELL B5 (1772 ed). STREETER SALE 2442. BARRETT 129.
