Characteristicks of Men, Manners, Opinions, Times. In Three Volumes

Birmingham: Printed by John Baskerville, 1773, Birmingham - Three volumes. Pp. [2], iv, [2], 364; 443; [4], 410, [48] index. Contents leaf misbound in volume 1. Copper-engraved frontis portrait, title page vignettes, and chapter head vignettes by Simon Gribelin. Finely bound by Bayntun of Bath in three-quarter crimson morocco over marbled boards, spine elegantly gilt in compartments with central floral ornaments, titled direct in gilt, citron edges. Bindings show only slight edgewear, lacking original blanks, and errata leaf in vol. 3, fly leaves darkened, earlier armorial bookplates and another more recent; overall, a splendidly bound, remarkably clean, crisp set. The First Baskerville Edition of one of the great English philosophical works of the 18th century. First published in 1711, Shaftesbury's Characteristics is a collection of previously published essays, including "An Inquiry Concerning Virtue or Merit" (1699), "A Letter Concerning Enthusiasm" (1708), "Sensis Communis, An essay on the Freedom of Wit and Humour" (1709), "The Moralists, A Philosophical Rhapsody" (1709), and "Soliloquy, or Advice to an Author" (1710). These writings embody the author's principal ethical and aesthetic theories, presented in an elegant and refined, though entirely unsystematic fashion. In these essays, Shaftesbury argues for freedom of thought, toleration, and an enlightened view of religion. He even suggests the use of humour as an antidote to dogmatism, arguing that there is no better test of religious truth than its ability to withstand ridicule. On the subject of ethics, Shaftesbury insists that morality exists independently of religion, and - against Hobbes - that man is naturally virtuous (which is not to say that all men are actually virtuous). Here he also parts company with his childhood mentor John Locke, viewing Locke's attack on innate ideas as undermining man's essential virtue. He describes man's natural love of virtue as his "moral sense", a term which is taken up by his philosophical heirs, Francis Hutcheson and David Hume. Shaftesbury's ideas, which owed much to the 'Cambridge Platonists', achieved widespread acceptance by his contemporaries, especially the English deists, and greatly influenced such Continental thinkers as Leibnitz, Lessing, Voltaire, and Diderot.         A Journal of a Voyage to the South Seas, in his Majesty's Ship, The Endeavour. Faithfully transcribed from the Papers of the late Sydney Parkinson, Draughtsman to Joseph Banks, Esq. on his late Expedition, with Dr. Solander, round the World

Richardson and Urquhart,. 1773.. First edition. Hardcover. Unauthorized narrative of Captain James Cook's first voyage from the papers of Parkinson, the artist on the voyage. As draughtsman to Sir Joseph Banks, he produced a prodigious number of striking drawings, both portraits & natural history. These images were to become some of the earliest images of the South Pacific seen by European observers. Parkinson's journal also has some of the earliest natural history observations and contains the first published use of the word kangaroo (as "kangooroo", p. 149). Sydney died in Batavia on the return voyage, and his drawings and diary were claimed by his brother Stanfield, who produced the 1st edition. In the Preface, Stanfield accused Banks of treating Sydney badly, alienating Banks & ultimately Dr. Fothergill, who tried to mediate. He also provoked Hawkesworth to file an injunction to prevent the works from appearing until after the official account. Hawkesworth's official account does not credit Parkinson. The book is a strong addition to any collector of Polynesian ethnography because of Parkinson's many exceptional portraits of the natives & artifacts encountered on the voyage- most of the plates are portraits of natives, either full length in regalia or head and shoulder portraits with tattooing and head gear. The natives of Terra del Fuego, Tahiti, New Zealand Maoris & New Holland are included, with fully 7 plates of New Zealand Maoris & 10 of Tahitians. Royal 4to, frontis, xxiv (last blank); 212 pp & 26 plates; (ii) errata. Fronts portrait with added margins. Overall a clean, large paper edition. Some very light scattered foxing, mostly early & late, with the usual offsetting of some plates. Handsomely rebound in half brown calf & marbled boards, spine gilt decorated in 7 compartments, raised bands, with red leather title label. decorated with red title label.         The History of Ireland,

London: J. Nourse, T. Longman, G. Robinson and J. Johnson,, 1773. from the Invasion of Henry II. With a preliminary discourse on the Antient State of that Kingdom. 3 volumes, quarto (260 x 200 mm). Contemporary speckled half calf, marbled paper boards, spines with two-line gilt bands and red morocco lettering-pieces, speckled edges. Scattered foxing; a handsome set in a period binding. First edition. Thomas Leland (1722-1785) was a Church of Ireland clergyman, historian and translator. He was encouraged to write his history by a group of Irish intellectuals, chief among them the great statesman and philosopher Edmund Burke. Burke believed that histories of Ireland up until that time had been "terribly defective" and had himself thought about writing a specific history of Ireland covering the turbulent 1640s. Instead he decided to "urge a very learned and ingenious friend", Thomas Leland, to undertake the task.

        Cereus

[Nuremberg], 1773. Engraving, coloured by hand, by J.J. or J.E.Haid. Very good condition apart from some overall light soiling. A very fine image from Trew's "Plantae Selectae," one of the greatest of all eighteenth-century botanical books, drawn by the greatest of eighteenth-century botanical artists, George Dionysius Ehret. Linnaeus wrote to Trew, in Latin, that "The miracles of our century in the natural sciences are your work of Ehret's plants...[N]othing to equal them was seen in the past or will be in the future." Christoph Trew, a physician and botanist, had for a number of years been an admirer of Ehret's work. Ehret, a brilliant botanical artist, was unrivalled in his ability to "achieve realism, majesty, ineffable colour, all in one breathtaking look" (Hunt). Born in Heidelberg in 1710, he originally worked as a gardener and practised drawing in his spare time. His artistic abilities led him to the service of a Regensburg banker named Leskenkohl, and it was during this period that Trew met Ehret. Trew was to remain a friend and patron of Ehret's throughout his life, and by 1742, the germ of what was to become the present publication was already under discussion when Trew wrote to Christian Thran in Carlsruhe "Every year I receive some beautifully painted exotic plants [by Ehret] and have already more than one hundred of them...." Ehret moved to London in the late 1730s, where he painted the recently introduced exotics at the Chelsea Physic Garden and established himself as a teacher of flower-painting and botany. Discussions about the projected work continued by letter until 1748, when Johann Jacob Haid from Augsburg agreed to produce the engravings from Ehret's drawings.

Paris, Didot jeune/ Knapen, 1773. 8vo (195 x 125mm). pp. xxxii, 299, (3), (2, Approbation, Privilege). Old vellum, spine with recent red label. Lacking half title and frontispiece. First edition of this catalogue of the minerals in Romé de Lisle's own mineral cabinet. Romé 'earned money by cataloguing at least fourteen mineral collections, according to his own, probably incomplete, list in the bibliography to his Cristallographie of 1783. Three of the catalogues remained in manuscript... In 1773 he brought out a description of the metallic ores of his own mineral cabinet, in which he discussed the origin, metamorphosis, and paragenesis of each' (DSB)./The descriptions are highly detailed, in terms of locale, mineral and crystal structure, composition, etc. The minerals are cross-referenced to Romé's 'Essai de cristallographie' (1772), the work in which he had established that crystallography was the basis of mineralogical classification. This was amplified in his epochal 'Cristallographie' in 1783, in which he established the general form of the law of constancy of interfacial angles and that each species of mineral has his characteristic primitive form and each form its characteristic constant angles. Pp. xx-xv contain a bibliography of works cited. //Provenance: Old duplicate of the Geological Society of London with their stamp on title.//Hoover 690; Ward and Carozzi 1908.

30 volumes were published of this important natural history periodical. The first 13 volumes were edited by J.E.I. Walch and the remaining volumes by J.C.D. Schreber. Numerous famous naturalists contributed such as J.S. Schröter, J.F. Gmelin, J.E. Walch, C. Kleemann, De Geer and J. Schreber. The periodical contains many Cook related contributions, as well as first descriptions of shells of Australia and New Zealand. Find below a list of the most important items. WALCH, J.E.I. The shells were acquired from Banks and Solander (von den Herren, Bancks und Solander, durch Umtausch erhandelt p. 33). The Opal Top Shell (Cantharidus opalus) here described and illustrated is according to Andrews p. 47 probably the first New Zealand animal to feature in a published book.
