NAVAL REGULATIONS.)
[London: The Admiralty,] 1772. Quarto (246 x 198 mm). Rebound in functional black cloth, titles in gilt to spine, untrimmed. A couple of discreet repairs to leaves, some foxing and spotting, light toning; a very good copy. Attractive engraved head- and tailpieces, tables to the text, and one folding. First issued in 1731, these are the fundamental regulations governing "the organization and discipline of the British Navy. Up to 1731 every commander-in-chief had issued his own code of instructions to his ships, but in that year appeared the first set of King's Regulations and Admiralty Instructions, to be followed by many others as they were periodically revised" (Uden & Cooper, A Dictionary of British Ships and Seamen). All of the 18th- and early 19th-century issues are uncommon, ESTC records just a dozen locations for this edition. The present copy is annotated, corrected and commented upon in a contemporary hand, providing further insight on repealed articles, revoked measures, and clarifying points of law. Sydney [Sidney], Algernon
London: Printed by W. Strahan Jun. for T. Becket and Co., et al, 1772. Quarto size, 817 pp. Algernon Sydney (sometimes spelled "Sidney") (1623-1683) was an English politician and political theorist; he opposed absolute monarchies and the divine right of kings, writing on the subject in his crucial work "Discourses Concerning Government" that "[g]eneral consent. . .is the ground of all just governments." Sydney was tried and executed for treason against King Charles II, with the beliefs he articulated in "Discourses" used as evidence against him in court. Sydney's writings, along with the philosopher John Locke's, were among the most influential on political thought during the seventeenth century, and in particular on the writings of Thomas Jefferson and the American Revolution. This edition contains not only Sydney's famous "Discourses Concerning Government" but also numerous letters he wrote, an account of his trial, and "The Apology of A. Sydney, in the Day of His Death", the speech he gave while on the scaffold just before he was executed. ___DESCRIPTION: Full brown contemporary calf, the spine with six raised bands and gilt decorations, red leather spine label with gilt lettering, gilt rules along the edges of the boards, frontispiece an engraved portrait of Algernon Sydney; quarto size (11.75" by 9.5"), pagination: [i-viii] [1-2] 3-540 [541-542]; followed by "Letters of Algernon Sydney, Taken from Thurloe's State Papers", numbered [1], blank [2], [3], 4-22; followed by "Letters of Algernon Sydney, Taken from The Sydney Papers", numbered [1], blank [2-3], 4-56; followed … [Click Below for Full Description]

(POWELL, David, owner and compiler).
Low Countires, 1772. Manuscript on paper, folio (various page sizes but c. 350 × 210 mm), pp. 84, [4] (Powell's pagination), mounted on guards, with interleaved notes, coloured armorial devices. Edges sometimes frayed, or with tears, occasionally with minor losses, numerous repairs and reinforcements (presumably by Powell). Later quarter calf, bookplates and suralibros of Marcia, Countess of Yarborough, Baroness Conyers. Spine worn. An elaborate antiquarian collection containing 19 large double-page armorials, apparently of the sixteenth century of the major families of Belgium, including Beaufort, Berghes, Egmont, Hornes, Lalain, Luzembourg, St. Aldegond, and including a number of members of the Order of the Golden Fleece. Each of these armorials bears detailed contemporary genealogies to their versos. These have been conserved by the British antiquary David Powell (?1772-1848) with other early genealogical material, his own notes and four large drawings of related stained glass, including a large window from the church of Notre Dame du Sablon (Brussels) and another in the hands of 'Mr Whatson an eminent glazier Hanway Yard Oxford Street' in 1816. Born in Tottenham, Powell became a Lieutenant in the 14th Light Dragoons; he left a manuscript account of his 1794 experiences in Cork, Flanders and Brabant. He later entered Magdalen College, Oxford, receiving a B.C.L. in June 1805. He spent much of the rest of his life making heraldic and genealogical collections, and touring England and Wales to make watercolour sketches of churches and manor houses in over forty counties. King George III. (George William Frederick)
Rare autograph letter signed by King George III in 1772. One page, written in German, the letter is addressed to Frederic III, Duke of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg, conveying warm regards and words of friendship. Affixed to the original transmittal envelope with the royal seal stamped in red wax. In near fine condition. An exceptional example. George III was King of Great Britain and King of Ireland from 1760 until the union of the two countries in 1801, after which he was King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland until his death in 1820. His life and reign, which were longer than those of any of his predecessors, were marked by a series of military conflicts involving his kingdoms including the defeat of France in the Seven Years' War early in his reign which made Britain the dominant power in North American and India. Many of Britain's colonies were soon lost, however, in the American Revolutionary War. Further wars against revolutionary and Napoleonic France from 1793 concluded in the defeat of Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

COOK, JAMES (+) GEORG FORSTER (+) TOBIAS FURNEAUX. - [FIRST SWEDISH TRANSLATION OF COOK'S SECOND VOYAGE]
1772. Upsala, Johan Edman, 1783. 8vo. In contemporary half calf with five raised bands, spine with gilt lettering and ornamentation. Ex-libris pasted on to pasted down front end-paper. Light wear to extremities, internally fine and clean. (24), 366, (10) pp. ¶ First Swedish translation of the official account of Cook's second voyage and Georg Forster's unofficial Voyage round the World."Cook earned his place in history by opening up the Pacific to western civilization and by the foundation of British Australia. The world was given for the first time an essentially complete knowledge of the Pacific Ocean and Australia, and Cook proved once and for all that there was no great southern continent, as had always been believed. He also suggested the existence of antarctic land in the southern ice ring, a fact which was not proved until the explorations of the nineteenth century" (Printing and the Mind of Man p.135). "The success of Cook's first voyage led the Admiralty to send him on a second expedition, described in the present work, which was to circumnavigate the globe as far south as possible in search of any southern continents. The men of this expedition became the first to cross the Antarctic Circle. Further visits were made to New Zealand, and on two great sweeps Cook made an astonishing series of discoveries and rediscoveries including Easter Island, the Marquesas, Tahiti and the Society Islands, Niue, the Tonga Islands, the New Hebrides, New Caledonia, Norfolk Island, [...] Cook discovered and charted South Georgia, after which he called at Cape Town, St. Helena and Asc … [Click Below for Full Description]

Benezet, [Anthony].
London, W. Owen, 1772. 12mo. V, IV, 198, (6) pp. Nineteenth century quarter calf with green vellum corners. First printed in Philadelphia the year prior, this title was intended specifically as an "impartial enquiry" to assess the oft-cited pro-slave trade justification that "the slavery of the Negroes took rise from a desire, in the purchasers, to save the lives of such of them as were taken captives in war, who would otherwise have been sacrificed to the implacable revenge of their conquerors". By examining a variety of first-hand accounts of trade and exploration on the African continent, Benezet sets out to fully discredit this assertion. He does this through outlining the influence of European factors and trading posts on local conflict, in particular emphasizing the corrupting influence that tax on slave ships had on local rulers. Alongside this, the frank descriptions of African society, government, agricultural and religious practices is designed to give a humanizing portrait of African people in their native land. This is then vehemently contrasted with accounts of the conditions of slavery, the circumstances of transportation and the treatment of enslaved people in the colonies. - Benezet published a series of pamphlets, at his own expense, explicating the horrors of slavery with a view to its abolition, most notably "A Caution and Warning to Great Britain and her Colonies [ ]" (1767). Ragatz writes that along with John Wollman, Benezet was one of the "chief early anti-slave trade agitators in the new world [ ] Benezet carried on universal propaganda and was in ve … [Click Below for Full Description]

Thomas JEFFERYS (ca.1719 - 1771)
"Nice example of this fine 4-sheet map of India, one of the largest English language maps of India of the period. Jefferys' map of India was the most detailed to date, and of great practical importance during a period of British expansion in the area. Depsite the detail, there are large parts of central India which are 'little known and in a manner independent.' Map taken from ""Kitchin's General Atlas, describing the Whole Universe"" by Thomas Kitchin: being a complete collection of the most approved maps extant; corrected with the greatest care, and augmented from the last edition of D'Anville and Robert with many improvements by other eminent geographers, engraved on Sixty-Two plates, comprising Thirty S … [Click Below for Full Description]

BOUGAINVILLE, Louis-Antoine de, comte.
London: for J. Nourse; and T. Davies, 1772. Quarto (267 x 208 mm) Contemporary speckled sheep neatly rebacked to style, red morocco label. Armorial bookplate by Edith Cleaves Barry for Nannie Jenckes Borden (1877-1963) of Fall River, Massachusetts. Near-contemporary note on front free endpaper noting Bougainville's death in Paris in 1811 and that he "passed through the storms of the French Revolution"; penciled note at foot of p. 18 remarking on the storming of Buenos Aries in 1806 by Beresford and Popham. A very good, well-margined copy. Folding plate, 5 folding engraved maps. First edition in English of the account of the first official French circumnavigation. In 1766 Bougainville had been ordered to return to the Falkland Islands to formally deliver the French settlement to Spain, and afterwards to continue into the Pacific and around the world. He was in Buenos Aires when the order of the expulsion of the Jesuits of Paraguay arrived, which he describes in detail. He entered the Pacific in 1768 and landed on Tahiti, claiming it for France, unaware of the visit of Samuel Wallis nine months earlier. On Tahiti it was discovered that the botanist's valet was a woman, Jeanne Barre; she stayed with the expedition and became the first woman on record to have circumnavigated the globe. Bougainville continued due west through Samoa and the New Hebrides, eventually making the first recorded European encounter with the Great Barrier Reef. Turning north 100 miles from the coast of Queensland, he passed through New Guinea to the Solomon Islands, thence to the Moluccas where the Dutc … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

In … [Click Below for Full Description]

".'Junius' poured brilliantly slanderous invective upon Tory-minded English ministers, especially the Duke of Grafton, for a series of 'inconsistent measures' which allegedly ruined England and drove the colonies 'into excesses little short of rebellion.' Vehement, lucid, frequently reprinted in English and colonial newspapers, the letters were polemical masterpieces with such extraordinary knowledge and appreciation of contemporary colonial opinion that they lent moral support to the early revolutionary cause. 'Junius' opposed the Tea Duty, but upheld the legality of the Stamp Act, and prophesied (Dec. 19, 1769) that the colonies aimed at independence". [Attributes: First Edition]

WHYTE, Samuel.
Dublin: Printed by R. Marchbank, in Cole's-Alley, Castle-Street, 1772. 4to (250 × 184 mm), pp. xvii, '512', [14], 515, [3], including list of subscribers, advert and errata, numerous cancels; worming to lower margins, mainly two or three small holes but becoming tracks towards the end, contemporary calf, rebacked to style; early ownership inscription, 'Surgeon Byron', a very good copy. First edition. Samuel Whyte (1733-1811) opened his 'Seminary for the Institution of Youth' or 'English Grammar School' in Grafton Street, Dublin, in 1758. 'Catering for boys and girls, Catholics and protestants, its co-educational, interdenominational ethos was, in Ireland at least, two centuries before its time. A hands-on headmaster, Whyte was on visiting terms with the parents of many of his pupils, whom, outside the normal curriculum, he encouraged to take part in private theatricals, to write verse and to socialize at balls, plays, and other entertainments' (Oxford DNB). Many of the poems included in this massive collection are by his students. Whyte's first cousin, Frances, married Thomas Sheridan, and encouraged support for the school. Richard Brinsley Sheridan and Lord Wellesley (brother of Wellington) were both pupils and appear among the subscribers, a fascinating list of notable and literary Dubliners which also includes brewer Arthur Guinness. ESTC records two Dublin issues of 1772 with variant imprints: 'Printed by R. Marchbank, for the editor...' and (as in this copy) 'Printed by R. Marchbank, in Cole's-Alley, Castle-Street'. London editions appeared in 1773 and 1774 with a fur … [Click Below for Full Description]

SPENCER, John.
Newcastle upon Tyne: T. Saint, 1772. 2 vols. bound together (200 × 120 mm), pp. [6], xiv, 225, [1]; [2], '374' [but 274]; dampstained throughout, final 5 leaves of vol. II consequently fragile, the last three with slight loss to upper forecorners; contemporary calf, expertly rebacked; early owner's stamp 'S. Winter' to first title verso; other early inscriptions to prelims. Rare first edition of both parts of Spencer's long poem based on the quasi-biblical first-century Christian poem, The Shepherd of Hermas. Though published posthumously, the work commences with a long author's Preface. 'HERMAS comses forth as the patriarchs of shepherds, to expose VICE, that spread and flourished in the DELIAN'S country, bordering on ACARIA; that it might be there seen and known in all its various delusions, and abhorred with the odium and detestation it deserves...' The Critical Review noted both volume as they appeared (separated by several months). 'There are many just reflections, evident marks of the author's piety and benevolence, and in many places, a laudable spirit of poetry in this performance'. Saint was a prolific Newcastle publisher (active 1754-1788); all Bewick's early wood engravings for books were published by him. Not in Jackson or Johnson. ESTC: BL, Cambridge, Newcastle Lit. and Phil. (2 copies), Newcastle Central, Bodley, Newberry, Lilly and one 'Private Collection' (NLS).
