1772. Diderot made this map illustrating important discoveries and voyages from Spain and Russia to western North America in 1772. The remarkably well maintained, copper plate engraved map still has crisp, even, hand coloring as issued distinguishing major geographical/political realms. An inset shows islands in the Mer de Tartarie. The discrepancies between todays knowledge of the North American coast and how it was mapped in the 1700's makes this beautiful and rare map a significant historical document. 11.25 x 15

Utrecht, 1772. Two volumes bound in one: [16],223,[1]; [4],240,[8]pp. plus engraved titlepage, four copper-engraved plates (one folding), and a large folding map. Lacks half-title and the three leaf subscribers list ("Lyst der Intekenaren") in the preliminary section of the second volume. Half title in first volume. Large quarto. Contemporary three-quarter vellum and Dutch patterned floral paper-covered boards, manuscript spine title. Foot of backstrip expertly repaired in matching vellum. Edges worn, boards rubbed, small area of paper loss at bottom corner of front cover. Short tear to large folding map near binding stub. Minimal edge toning to text, but mostly very clean internally. Overall very good. Untrimmed. A very nice, large copy in a handsome original binding of the first Dutch edition of Peter Kalm's travels in North America, after the Swedish first edition of 1753-61 and the rare first English edition published in Warrington in 1770-71. Lande repeated Sabin's assertion, itself taken from a Henry Stevens catalogue, that this Dutch edition is "far superior to the Swedish and English editions." ^Peter Kalm was in America from 1748 to 1751, and provided an account full of detailed and reliable observations. It is an important work for its commentary on colonial American social organization and natural history. Kalm made a notable trip into the back country of New York with the naturalist, John Bartram, as well as travelling in more settled regions. All four plates reflect Kalm's interest in the American natural world, as all show natural subjects: three depict N … [Click Below for Full Description]

STAGNON, Giacomo.
GRANDE CARTA TOPOGRAFICA MURALE, 1772.
"Nice example of this fine 4-sheet map of India, one of the largest English language maps of India of the period. Jefferys' map of India was the most detailed to date, and of great practical importance during a period of British expansion in the area. Depsite the detail, there are large parts of central India which are 'little known and in a manner independent.' Map taken from ""Kitchin's General Atlas, describing the Whole Universe"" by Thomas Kitchin: being a complete collection of the most approved maps extant; corrected with the greatest care, and augmented from the last edition of D'Anville and Robert with many improvements by other eminent geographers, engraved on Sixty-Two plates, comprising Thirty S … [Click Below for Full Description]

ROBERT (Marie-Anne)]
Paris: Ches Houbaut, 1772. First Edition, [?]first issue. Lesure p. 264. Hirsch II, 366. Not in Sonneck. RISM G4497. Zémire et Azor, to a libretto by Marmontel, was first performed at Fontainebleau on November 9, 1771. "This version of the Beauty and the Beast story was created from two literary sources: the substance of the story is from La belle et la bête by Jeanne Marie Le Prince de Beaumont, and the names and the setting from Amour pour amour, a verse play by P. C. Nivelle de La Chaussée (1742)... Recognized immediately as Grétry's best as well as largest work to date, [Zémire et Azor] had immense international success (it was given at the King's Theatre, London, in 1779). The text was also used in settings by Linley the elder (1776), Gotthilf von Baumgarten (1776) and Spohr (1819). Grétry's music ranges widely in character and function, and uses special instrumental effects in Acts 3 and 4. Mozart owned a copy of the score." David Charlton in Grove Music Online.. Folio. Jahrhundert … [Click Below for Full Description]

DEZÈDE, Nicolas 1740-1792
Paris: Chs M. Houbaut ... A Lion. M. Castaud ... A.P.D.R, 1772. Paris: Chés M. Houbaut ... A Lion. M. Castaud ... A.P.D.R.. "The mystery of Dezède's ancestry has never been unravelled; he may have been the illegitimate son of a German prince, and his education was well provided for. He signed his works 'D.Z.', these being the only letters he knew his name contained. After going to Paris to complete his musical education, and in need of funds after the cessation of an annuity, he formed a successful partnership with Jacques-Marie Boutet de Monvel. Monvel was responsible for the librettos of Dezède's most successful works ... Monvel, who subsequently worked with Dalayrac, specialized in rustic subjects, but with an up-to-date moral slant, as found in Julie (1772) and Les trois fermiers (1777) ... Julie already shows Dezède's use of minor-mode expression and off-beat accentuation." "Dezède's music was always recognized for the tunefulness of the simpler melodies, in romances, vaudevilles and other set pieces ... He tended towards a rich contemporary style, German-influenced and sometimes Italian-sounding in the vocal writing. Phrase structures are symmetrical, orchestration is varied and colourful, and the idiom follows that of the Mannheim school... An experimental feature of one of the works for which Dezède wrote the music and the text was the use of prose for operatic musical setting." David Charlton in Grove Music Online.. 1f.
