JEFFERYS, Thomas
London,: Thomas Jefferys,, 1772. 1772. Large-scale engraved map, fine original full-wash colour, on twenty sheets, dissected and mounted on linen in four sections, folding into modern calf pull-off slipcase, red morocco label, lettered in gilt to spine. Thomas Jefferys was one of the most important and prolific map publishers of the eighteenth century and was appointed Cartographer to the Prince of Wales in 1748, and later to George III. Apart from his publishing business he produced many important atlases and maps of America and the West Indies and surveyed and engraved many large-scale maps of English counties including Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Westmoreland and Yorkshire. The huge cost involved in these projects was a major contribution to his slide into insolvency and he became bankrupt in 1766. Surprisingly it made little difference to his business activities, "having found some friends who have been compassionate enough to re-instate me in my shop". One of these friends was Robert Sayer who joined him in partnership and whose imprint appeared on the later editions of some of Jefferys' large-scale surveys. Thomas Jefferys was involved in one capacity or another in no less than ten English large-scale surveys in the latter part of the eighteenth century but died a year before the publication of the magnificent survey of Yorkshire. Although he achieved early prominence through his engraving of the award winning map of Devon by Benjamin Donn in 1765 his greatest achievement in this field was undoubtedly this map of Yorkshire engraved on a scale of 1 in … [Click Below for Full Description]

SPENCER, John.
Newcastle Upon Tyne: Printed by T. Saint, 1772. Hermas was edited and published after the author's death, and at his request, by William Hilton, whose introduction conveys a sense of duty rather than enthusiasm for the task. It is a substantial work - ca. 15,000 lines - its heroic couplets inspired by Young's Night Thoughts and Harvey's Meditations. His shepherd's speak 'in a style, familiar, plain and simple ... an humble imitation of the earliest stages of the world, when sages and philosophers were companions of shepherds' (p. v). Given the circumstances under which it was published Hermas is unsurprisingly rare, OCLC locating three copies in North America, at the Lilly libary, Minnesota and the Newberry library, and copies in the UK at the BL, Cambridge, Bodleian, NLS and three in Newcastle libraries.

Used; Like New (). [American Music] Gifford, Isaac. (1772-1843) Decorated Tenor Partbook from Early American Fa-Sol-La Tradition, dated 1797 Autograph musical manuscript, dated 1797, approx. 70 pp., handwritten in ink throughout, followed by additional blank leaves and containing nearly 50 songs in total (with titles such as "French tune", "London tune", "York tune", "Dundee tune", "Dublin tune", "Martyrs tune", "Aby tune", "Newton tune", St. David's tune", etc.), consisting of a combination of popular tunes from the period and apparently original compositions penned by Isaac Gifford. Entries are embellished throughout the book with assorted decorative border patterns painstakingly hand-drawn by Gifford. 3.75 × 6.5 inches (9.5 × 16.5 cm), leather-backed paper-covered boards. Cover worn and partially detached, some loose leaves, one leaf lacking, scattered staining and minor tearing, mild toning, ink bold and legible throughout. A fascinating early American manuscript music book kept by Isaac Gifford of Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, founded just ten years previous, in 1787. This manuscript is an early witness of the American singing tradition that encompassed shape-note singing and the Sacred Harp. The present collection is a partbook for the "tenner" or tenor voice, which in this tradition sang the melody in the middle of a texture, harmonized by higher and lower voices. Its notation was designed for readers and singers who possessed differing kinds of musical literacy. Instead of note heads, the letters F, S, L, and M were written on a five-line staff: the whole-step sy … [Click Below for Full Description]

BOUGAINVILLE, Lewis [sic] de.
London for J. Nourse & T. Davies, 1772. First edition in English, 4to, xxviii, 476 pp., five folding maps and one engraved plate, light offsetting to text, Z3 with piece torn at margin, occasional light spotting, contemporary calf, red morocco label, neat restoration to joints, a very good copy. Bougainville founded a settlement on the Falkland Islands in 1764 but was instructed to hand it over to Spain. He afterwards crossed the Pacific, visiting Tuamotu and Tahiti, Samoa, the New Hebrides, and the Louisades. He certainly sighted the Great Barrier Reef, and may have seen the coast of Queensland. This was translated from the first French edition of the previous year by Johann Reinhold Forster. This volume contains a 300 word local Tahitian vocabulary, the first printed account of any Polynesian language. This account aroused great interest in France, resulting in the vision of the noble savage and of the South Seas as a kind of paradise in the minds of Jean-Jacques Rousseau and others. Hill, p31; Kroepelien, 109; Sabin, 6863; BdM I, 115; Dunmore I, pp57-113. [Attributes: First Edition]

SANDBY (Thomas) & SANDBY (Paul).
London, John Boydell, March the 2.d 1772. 335 x 563 mm.

A Londres: n.d. [circa 1772?]. First Edition. 12mo (164 x 90 mm), pp. xxiv, [25]-144; vi, [7]-104, text damp-stained and browned in part, The very rare first edition of one of the most popular funny books of the French eighteenth century which saw at least half a dozen reprints in the eighteenth century and was reprinted by Pierre-Charles Monselet in 1881. The introductory material - introduction, épitre dédicatoire, envoi and avant-propos - describe with gusto the final stages of the work's production. Reading aloud to himself the final phrases of his work, an abbot, looking like a four-foot doll, smiles at the charm of his own work and at how popular it will be with the ladies. He preens himself happily before visiting a young countess to whom he begs leave to dedicate the work. The work itself is a series of tales and anecdotes, romantic stories interwoven with satirical comment and brief comic interludes, very much like a modern day comedy show with improvisations and narrative serials. The titles of the various chapters give some idea as to the satirical, lively and mildly libertine nature of the work: 'le Labyrinthe', 'le faux Milord', 'le Malade Imaginaire', 'l'Actrice de Province raconte son Histoire', 'Des Boudoirs consacrés à la Volupté' and 'Des Boudoirs consacrés à l'Intérêt'. C'est très gai', says Gay, adding, that Cailhava had so much success with the work that he almost im … [Click Below for Full Description]

CARTER, SUSANNAH
Boston: re-printed and sold by Edes and Gill, in Queen Street, [1772]. FIRST AMERICAN EDITION. This is the second cookbook printed in America, preceded only by the similarly rare The Compleat Housewife printed in Williamsburg in 1742. 12mo. [12], 166 of 168 pp., final leaf O6 in facsimile. 2 engraved plates. 18th-century sheep. Spine rubbed, front hinge starting at top. Light toning, small tear without loss to title. Generally in excellent condition, a remarkable survival, especially given the subject matter. Carter’s Frugal Housewife was one of the “enduring classics in the American marketplace, reprinted in American cities into the 1830s” (Snell). Printed from the London edition with alterations, The Frugal Housewife strongly influenced the first cookery book by an American author, Amelia Simmons’s American Cookery (1796). Simmons copied entire passages almost word for word from Carter. This first American edition of The Frugal Housewife, printed without a date, was advertised by Edes & Gill in the Boston Gazette as “this day Published” on 2 March 1772. Edes & Gill are best remembered as the most important printers in Boston during the American Revolution. In 1773, one year after publishing this cookbook, they and their newspaper, the Boston Gazette, played a crucial role in sparking the Boston Tea Party. For this cookbook they turned to another patriot, Paul Revere, famed as a silversmith and engraver. Paul Revere engraved two plates on copper to illustrate this work. Revere referred to his work in his Day Book on January 20, 1772, where he wrote: “Mesr. Edes & Gill Dr. … [Click Below for Full Description]
