Library: Late in his career, John Baskerville printed an edition of Orlando Furioso for the Molini brothers, an Italian printing firm based in Paris. This beautiful four-volume set of Ariosto's 50,000 line poem is illustrated with forty-six engraving (plus a frontispiece), designed by some of the most celebrated artists of that time. A new engraving begins each new episode of the author's work and the artists appear to have been given much freedom in their designs. The twenty-one artists don't often get credit and so, here's the complete list. Frontispiece portrait is after a painting by Titian (ca. 1485/90?-1576), drawn by Charles Dominique Joseph Eisen (1720-1778) and engraved by Etienne Ficquet (1719-1794).The plates were designed by Giovanni Battista Cipriani (1727-1785); Charles Nicolas Cochin II (1715-1790); Charles Dominique Joseph Eisen (1720-1778); Jean-Baptiste Greuze (1725-1805); Charles Monnet (1732-after 1808); Jean-Michel Moreau the Younger (1741-1814).The engravings were cut by Francesco Bartolozzi (1728-1815); Pierre Philippe Choffard (1730-1809); Antoine Jean Duclos (1742-1795); Emmanuel Jean de Ghendt (1738-1815); Isidore Stanislas Henri Helman (1743-?1806/9); Benott Louis Henriquez (1732-1806); Nicolas de Launay (1739-1792); Joseph de Longueil (1730-1792); Pietro Antonio Martini (1738-1797); Jean Massard (1740-1822); Jean-Michel Moreau, the Younger (1741-1814); Nicolas Ponce (1746-1831); Benoit Louis Prevost (1747-ca. 1804); and Jean-Baptiste-Blaise Simonet (1742-after 1813).

Rare and a good copy. Rif.         Plantae Selectae

[Nuremberg] 1773 - (20 1/4 x 14 inches). 3 mezzotint portraits of Trew, G.D. Ehret and J.J. Haid, 10 engraved section titles, all heightened in red and gold, 100 hand-coloured engraved plates by Johann Jacob Haid and Johann Elias Haid after Georg Dionysius Ehret, with lettering heightened in gold. Contemporary diced russia, covers with outer decorative rule and roll-tool border, spine in eight compartments with raised bands, lettered in one, the others with symmetrical overall tooling composed from various small tools (flowers in the main), narrow gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers Provenance: Beriah Botfield (Christie's London, 30 March 1994, lot 89) One of the greatest eighteenth century botanical books, with 100 exquisite plates after paintings by Georg Dionysius Ehret. Georg Dionysius Ehret, the greatest botanical artist of the 18th century, was unrivalled in his ability to"achieve realism, majesty, ineffable colour, all in one breathtaking look." (Hunt). He was born in Heidelberg in 1710, and originally worked as a gardener, practising drawing in his spare time. His artistic abilities led him into the service of a Regensburg banker named Leskenkohl who had commissioned him to copy plates from van Rheede tot Draakestein's Hortus indicus malabaricus (1678-1693). It was during this period that Trew met Ehret. "Trew was a Nuremberg physician, anatomist, and botanist who at various times served as dean of the medical school at Nuremberg, as an Imperial Counselor, and as personal physician to the Emperor. He was made a Pfalzgraf and served as a patron of botanical (and anatomical) illustrators, filling roughly the same position in Germany as that occupied by Sir Hans Sloane in England" ( Clevland Collections p.397). Trew was to remain a friend and patron of Ehret's throughout his life, and by 1742 the germ of what was to become the present publication was already under discussion when Trew wrote to Christian Thran in Carlsruhe "Every year I receive some beautifully painted exotic plants [by Ehret] and have already more than one hundred of them, which with other pieces executed by local artists, should later on . constitute an appendicem to Weinmann's publication." Ehret moved to London in the late 1730s, where he painted the recently introduced exotics at the Chelsea Physic Garden and established himself as a teacher of flower-painting and botany. Discussions about the projected work continued by letter until in 1748 when Johann Jacob Haid of Augsburg agreed to produce the engravings from Ehret's drawings. The first part was published in 1750, with six subsequent parts appearing before Trew's death 1769. The text to the final three parts remained unwritten and the plates to parts IX and X were still to be produced. The work was bought to a conclusion by Benedict Christian Vogel, Professor of Botany at the University of Altdorf. This copy does not include the engraved general title, or the portrait of Vogel, as issued when the decuria or part titles are present.         LA CORNEIDE POEMA EROI-COMICO DEL DOTTOR CORNOGRAFO colle annotazioni di Cornelio Tacito il Moderno

Legatura coeva in mezza tela. Piatti in cartone verde. The Love of Order: a poetical Essay. In three Cantos.

Printed for J. Dodsley., London 1773 - Sole edition. An entertaining early poem by the comic novelist Graves (best known for The Spiritual Quixote, 1772), member of the Bath circle. This mock encomium of the 'love of order' as a principle of virtue and taste ranges from the serious to the burlesque. The second Canto addresses taste in gardening with references to Mason ('Promiscuous blends his sylvan Shades') and the modern affectation of irregularity in garden design. The reviewer of the Westminster Magazine approved of this point : 'The satire is well-tim'd and necessary.' The Monthly Review called it a 'spirited little poem.' It is playfully dedicated to a child, one William James of Denford, Berks. There are several authorial manuscript corrections to the text on pp. 22, 24, 25 and 28. 4to (262 × 196 mm), pp. 36, including half-title; title with engraved vignette by Collyer; modern quarter morocco. Lower right corners on the last 3 leaves in volume 1 with a mild foxing. First edition. Fleurieu took part in a one-year sea campaign to test Berthoud's first marine chronometer, in an attempt to beat Britain in the race to find a reliable way to calculate longitude. The chronometers he thus refined with Ferdinand Berthoud for their later experiments were the object of major struggles with the king's horologer, Pierre Le Roy. Finally Claret de Fleurieu and Berthoud were entrusted with the task, setting out on the testing expedition from autumn 1768 to 11 October 1769 on the frigate Isis under Fleurieu's command. The chronometers almost invariably indicated the hour as accurately after the ship had left port, as if they were still on land. Knowing the actual local time at each present location by astronomy, they could easily determine the ship's exact position and longitude on a chart. The results of their observations was published in 1773 under the title Voyage fait par ordre du roi, pour éprouver les horloges marines ("Voyage made by order of the king, to test marine chronometers").Sabin, 24750.
