Paris: Saillant & Nyon, 1772. Octavo, blind-stamped ex-libris to half title; contemporary French marbled calf, flat spine gilt in compartments, red morocco label. A fine copy of the first French account of Cook's Endeavour voyage, and the first French book on the east coast of Australia. Fréville translates the text now considered to be by Magra, which - published in English in 1771 - was the unauthorised and earliest account of the progress of the Endeavour voyage. This is one of two probably simultaneous issues, this one having the "Supplément" title-page; in this form the publishers intended the book to complement the octavo edition of Bougainville's voyage. The work also includes two interesting additions that did not appear in the original London edition. The 'Lettre de M. de Commerson' is by the famed naturalist from Bougainville's circumnavigation, who remained behind at Mauritius to continue his research. Continuing the parade of famous explorers included in this short work, the letter itself is said to have been conveyed to France by none other than Kerguelen, promoter of the "Terre Australe".The second supplement is equally important: the 'Lettre de M. le B. de G.' is a learned treatise on the possibility of a northwest passage, written at Königsberg (modern Kaliningrad), and quoting from experts on the region such as Gmelin, Muller, and Engel. Although the identity of this scholar remains hazy, it is surprising that such an interesting - and relatively early - report on the northwest passage has been largely ignored.Rolf du Rietz in the Kroepelien catalogue further notes that a letter from Sir Joseph Banks to the Académie des Sciences is also quoted in the introduction, said to have first been published in the Journal des Savans. Despite his best efforts to distance himself from Magra's work (including having the false dedication in the London edition removed), it appears that his unwilling association with the work continued on the continent. Indeed, one of the attractive aspects of this copy is not only the fine contemporary French binding, but the spine label which reads 'Voyage de Solander': it was not unusual for Banks to be given top-billing in the excitement of the return of the Endeavour, but there cannot be too many examples that plump for Solander. Very slight rubbing to joints but a fine tall copy with good margin.

Paris: Houbaut; Lyon: Castaud ? 1772 - engraved throughout (both music and text), pp. [ii], 169, folio, contemporary green boards, upper board with gilt title, both boards with gilt arms of the Duc de Brancas, hinges cracked, backstrip slightly soiled, edges rubbed, a few smudges on rear board, good. Grétry was one of the leading proponents of early French opéra comique, and, following Voltaire's suggestion, he established himself in Paris in 1767. Here, he wrote more than 60 works for the stage to great acclaim. The pension which he was eventually granted by the King was cancelled during the Revolution, but, finding favour with the new regime, doubled by Napoleon who also granted him the Légion d'honneur. In L'Ami de la Maison, a re-telling of Marmontel's Le connaisseur, Grétry uses a number of techniques which anticipate Mozart's Figaro, notably his use of stylistic parody and alternation between the comic style and the 'high' style, thus creating an effect of complex sensibility.

Vetenskaps-Academien, vid præsisii nedläggande, den 31 Octob. 1778.Stockholm, Johan Georg Lange, 1778. 8vo. Bound as sewn.

Du Rietz, Polynesiana 1217; Stafleu & Cowan V, p. 774; Waller 11011; not in Beddie; Hill. First (and only early) edition of Sparrman's lecture to the Swedish Royal Academy of Science on the need for further scientific research in the South Pacific, especially concerning its natural history. Based on his own observations as naturalist on Cook's second voyage, 1772-1775, it discusses people, geography and natural history, especially in New Zealand, with comments on particular botanical species (the author was already growing two in Sweden). Sparrman (1748-1820), a botanist and physician who studied under Linnaeus, notes the importance of the still largely uncharted New Holland (Australia), but concentrates on New Zealand. He gives an account of the current state of research and his own vision of the region's future. The talents of the New Zealanders impressed him, so he thought Europeans could "civilize" them. This was his first publication about Cook's voyage. A reply by the Academy's secretary, Pehr Wilhelm Wargentin, appears on pp. 36-39.Some marginal dampstain, but otherwise a good copy and wholly untrimmed, with all bolts still unopened. Some copies have an engraved vignette pasted on the title-page, not in the present issue.

Sommer Potsdam 1772 - Folio (37.5 x 24.5 cm). Engraved portrait frontispiece by Daniel Berger, title with engraved vignette, [3] with head-piece engraved by Berger after Michel Gerin,111 each with engraved medals, [3] ll. errata and table; browning to some pages. Contemporary vellum, red morocco gilt label to spine; some minor spotting, label chipped. Serge Lifar's fine example, with very wide margins, of the uncommon first edition of this Russian chronicle depicting more than 100 medals issued during the first century of "modern Russia", that is from the birth of Peter the Great in 1672 up to 1770. Such medals were traditionally minted to mark an event of historic significance, such as a military victory, the coronation of a new Tsar/Tsarina, the establishment of a cultural institution etc. Ricaud chose here to reproduce in engraving both sides of each medal, accompanied by the corresponding Imperial decree in French, mentioning however the Russian words meant to be engraved on the medal. We find celebrated all great events of 18th-century Russia, such as the accessions to the throne of Peter the Great, Catherine I, Anna Ioanovna, Elisabeth I and Catherine II, the establishment of the Black sea and Baltic sea navies, victories of the Russian army during the Great Northern War, as well as wars with Sweden and Turkey, the opening of the Russian Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg. Ricaud de Tiregale (ca. 1725 - 1772) was a French architect and engineer, whose main achievement was the construction of the large baroque Potocki Palace in Warsaw. As a lieutenant-colonel on His Majesty's King of Prussia Frederick II service, the author spent most of his life in Poland, which at that time was divided between the Russian and Prussian Empires. Greatly admiring Catherine the Great, Ricaud de Tiregale dedicated his main work to her. Brunet IV-1274. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Fully manuscript commission document, signed, appointing Enoch Page a "Captain of the Tenth Company, of the Fourth Regiment of Militia in... Province of New Hampshire".

Nottingham, NH: Twelth day of August, , 1772. Half sheet of laid paper with indistinct watermark of the Royal Arms within garter, surmounted by a crown (79 x 304 mm), papered seal intact, text in a neat clerical hand, signed by Cilley with a flourish. Paper with light browning overall, creases from old vertical median, and trifold horizontal folding, associated splitting neatly repaired some time ago with translucent paper adhesive tape, a few minor edge-splits, but very good. Exemplary pre-Revolutionary War military document, linking two men with extensive service during the period. Joseph Cilley (1734-99) was born in Nottingham, New Hampshire, son of Captain Joseph Cilley of the Isle of Shoals. Cilley served as an officer in the American Revolution and earlier, in 1758 seeing action in the French and Indian Wars as a sergeant on attachment with Rogers' Rangers. Men from the New Hampshire Militia - which was founded in 1680, and had been present at the capture of Louisbourg in 1745 - fought at the Battle of Lake George, the Siege of Fort William Henry, the Siege of Louisbourg (1758), the Battle of Carillon and the fall of Fort Carillon (later Ticonderoga) in 1759, the Battle of the Plains of Abraham and the Battle of Sainte-Foy near Quebec, and at the final capitulation of New France at Montreal. Cilley began his Revolutionary War service at the Battle of Lexington. In 1777 he was appointed lieutenant-colonel in the 1st New Hampshire Regiment which, under his command, fought in numerous significant engagements including Trenton, Princeton, Monmouth, and Stony Point, and through the Saratoga Campaign. In 1779 Cilley was with Clinton-Sullivan Campaign against the Six Nations in the western New York, in the same year being voted a pair of pistols by the New Hampshire Assembly "as a token of this State's good intention to reward merit in a brave officer". Following the war, in 1786 he was appointed major general of the 1st Division New Hampshire Militia, commanding the troops that put down the Paper Money Riot in Essex, NH, later that year. Cilley was elected to the New Hamshire senate, and was one of the founders of the Society of the Cincinnati in New Hampshire, serving variously as treasurer, vice-president, and president. The recipient Enoch Page (1742-1832), was Cilley's brother-in-law, being married to his sister Alice. During the Revolutionary War he was a first lieutenant in Captain Ballard's Company of Colonel Frye's Regiment, Cambridge, 14 July - 6 October, 1775, and subsequently a captain commanding a company in Col. Senter's Regment at Rhode Island, August-December, 1777. A highly attractive piece, we have been unable to trace any other documentary material from Cilley on the market.

With titlevignette, vignette, 24 copperplates, genealogical table and 1 large folding map. XLVII + [3] + 431 + [1] pp. Well-preserved copy with wide margin and yellow edges bound in contemporary halfleather with coloured label and golddecorations on spine. Binding weakly marked of use. * Carsten Niebuhr was a student at the University of Göttingen. Professor J.H. Michaëlis, employed there, recommended Niebuhr to J.H.E. Bernstorff who in cooporation with the Danish government was planning an expedition to Arabia. Michaëlis regarded Niebuhr as very qualified for the task of participating as astronomer and natural historian. On the 7th of January 1761 the members of the expedition took off. They included Niebuhr, the philologist F.V. von Haven, the Swedish natural scientist Peter Forskål, the doctor C.C. Kramer and the engraver Baurenfeind. The first stop was Istanbul where they stayed for a long while before sailing to Alexandria where they stayed for nearly one year. During the stay in Egypt they made important archeologic, geographic and natural historic investigations there and on Sinai. On the 29th December 1762 they arrived in Djedda. In May 1763 F.V. von Haven and Peter Forskål died from exhaustion caused by travel complications and the unfamiliar climate. Niebuhr became leader of the expedition. During the following eight months Niebuhr traveled through Yemen, being the first European in that area. In order to survive and to protect the collected items, the party had to leave Mekka and move on to Bombay. Baurenfeind died on the way and Kramer soon after. After 14 months in Bombay Niebuhr started his journey back. On the way he visited the ruined town Persepolis where he made drawings of the most important relics and copied cuneiforms. In November he finally reached Denmark, being the only surviving member of the Arabic expedition. His copied cuneiforms were studied by Rasmus Rask and other philologists when deciphering the cuneiform alphabet.

Religious Fresco - Moses Descends from Mount Sinai

Rome 1772 - This impressive large folio, copper-plate engraving comes from Logge di Rafaele nel Vaticano, published in Rome between 1772 and 1777. Plates from this work are after the elaborate paintings found in the Vatican by Raphael (Rafaello) Sanzio d’Urbino, one of the most inspiring of Italian High Renaissance artists. During the early 1500s, Urbino spent his days in the Vatican decorating the pilasters found on the main floor of the interior apartments. Logge was one of the earliest works to show the interior design of the Vatican. Each plate was engraved by Giovanni Ottoviani after Gaetano Savorelli (painter), Ludovico Teseo (draughtsman), and Pietro Camporesi (architect). This plate has recently-applied professional opaque coloring, painted in a manner similar to the style of the late 1700s. Vibrant, strong colors were used making this engraving an astonishing work of art. Logge, as it was originally published, contained 28 plates with the intention of them being integrated into 14 larger plates. The resulting combination is being offered here. --- Please review the image carefully for condition and contact us with any questions. The work is in very good to excellent condition overall. Some minor imperfections due to age are to be expected, and most imperfections (if present) can be noted in the picture. There is generally some very light foxing or smudging in the margins which does not affect the overall quality. The engravings are quite large and our current photography set up didn't allow for all of the edges in some of the pictures.
