        Disegno della Prima Machina rappresentante un luogo dedicato alla Cinese Filosofia

      1772 - Acquaforte e bulino, 1772. Da un soggetto di Paolo Posi. Bella prova, impressa su carta vergata coeva, con margini. Il foglio era applicato su tela ed in cornice; dopo un sapiente lavoro di restauro è stato riportato alla condizione originale. Restauri integrativi agli angoli, lievi ossidazioni, per il resti in buone condizioni. Le macchine del fuoco per la festa della Chinea Chinea in senso letterale, era la mula bianca (o il cavallo ambiatore delle Asturie) che i Re di Spagna presentavano annualmente al papa in forma solenne per il pagamento del censo per il Regno di Napoli. Il cavallo, convenientemente ammaestrato, s'inginocchiava davanti al pontefice e gli offriva la somma di danaro contenuta in un vaso d'argento fissato alla sella. L'offerta era preceduta da una solenne cavalcata della durata di due ore e mezza, lungo un itinerario preciso. Per rendere più solenne la cerimonia, con decreto del 12 maggio 1691 di Carlo II, si obbligavano i "grandi" di Spagna a partecipare al solenne corteo, al quale seguivano per due sere spari di macchine pirotecniche accompagnati da esecuzioni musicali, balli e rinfreschi. La chinea, per la sua regolarità, non era soltanto la festa estiva per eccellenza, ma il migliore biglietto da visita della monarchia spagnola (poi di quella napoletana) nella città eterna, l'arma propagandistica più convincente per guadagnare un consenso universale e l'appoggio politico delle altre potenze. Le celebrazioni erano fastosissime, malgrado i problemi politici della nazione, ed il consueto ritardo nell'invio del danaro per il loro svolgimento. In occasione della festa, palazzo di Spagna e, successivamente, palazzo Colonna e palazzo Farnese, diventavano per due mesi all'anno l'atelier di inventori, pittori, disegnatori e architetti di macchine, nonché il momento di aggregazione di artificieri, fuocaroli, musicisti, fornitori e cuochi. Questi palazzi, inoltre, diventavano, per due giorni all'anno, sede dell'ambasciata straordinaria, luogo dal quale partiva la cavalcata e davanti al quale si innalzavano le « stupefacenti » macchine per i fuochi d'artificio, dove si disponevano le luminarie tenute accese le sere della vigilia e il giorno della festività dei santi Pietro e Paolo. Risale agli inizi del Settecento la consuetudine di allestire, il 28 e 29 giugno, due sontuose macchine in piazza santissimi Apostoli (più raramente in piazza Farnese), di cui conosciamo le caratteristiche grazie alle minuziose incisioni, accompagnate da esaurienti didascalie, che vennero stampate annualmente dal 1723. Monopolizzarono la costruzione e progettazione delle macchine di questo periodo Paolo Posi, architetto camerale della Repubblica di Venezia e di casa Colonna, in collaborazione con il suo allievo, l'architetto camerale Giuseppe Palazzi, e con l'incisore Giuseppe Vasi. Posi, ultimo epigono del barocco, celebrava Ferdinando negli apparati come appassionato archeologo, e come l'entusiasta monarca favorevole al trasporto in piazza di elementi popolari sulla platea d'un sontuoso edificio destinato al divertimento pubblico. Più che mai per tali apparati, ove l'incisore lavorò su disegni altrui, come d'altronde per spettacolari cortei o cavalcate cittadine, il Vasi è prezioso testimone ed interprete del suo tempo. Chinea literally means white female mule, the one the Kings of Spain offered every year to the Pope as a solemn payment of the income of the Kingdome of Naples. The horse, duly trained, knelt in front of the Pope and to offer him a silver vase with money inside, that was fastened to its saddle.         Lettre sur l'homme et ses rapports.

      Paris 1772 - In-12 de 242, pp., veau brun glacé, dos lisse orné, pièce de titre en maroquin rouge (reliure de l'époque). Edition originale rare. François Hemsterhuis (1721-1790), "le Platon hollandais", s'occupa principalement d'esthétique et de philosophie morale ; attaché au Conseil d?État des Provinces-Unies à La Haye de 1755 à 1780, il se lia à la même époque à la famille Galitzin et sollicita Diderot à propos de sa Lettre sur l'Homme et ses rapports, publiée en 1772 - dont le commentaire n'apparaîtra que deux siècles plus tard. « Hemsterhuis voulait, selon ses propres termes, démontrer que "la raison seule (?) ne saurait jamais nous mener aux systèmes de matérialisme et de libertinage". Apparemment, bien qu'il ne le dît pas explicitement, il tentait de réfuter le Système de la Nature de d'Holbach. La Lettre sur l'Homme et ses rapports était un livre petit, mais très ambitieux. Il était également réactionnaire en ce sens qu'il déplorait dès le début que la liberté de la presse portât préjudice à la morale. Bref, dans un texte lapidaire, Hemsterhuis mettait en question tout ce à quoi Diderot tenait le plus et aimait le plus profondément, si bien que sa réaction est d'une importance capitale pour parvenir à comprendre sa philosophie. Se fondant au départ sur le postulat d'une philosophie idéaliste, Hemsterhuis soulevait vivement mais maladroitement toutes les questions métaphysiques et éthiques qui avaient assailli l'humanité depuis Platon. Pour faire des observations sur ces problèmes, Diderot dut naturellement répliquer sur un front très vaste, et donc le commentaire sur Hemsterhuis nous donne l'occasion d'embrasser d'un seul regard l'ensemble de la philosophie de Diderot » (Wilson). Le carrozze Con la prima tavola siamo nell'officina di un carrozziere con operai che sgrossano, segano, forano parti di vetture. Nella parte inferiore, veduta laterale di una berlina a quattro posti. Seconda tavola. Berlina alla francese, nelle parti anteriore e posteriore, e in spaccati trasversali davanti e dietro. Uno spaccato longitudinale della stessa berlina, le piante dell'imperiale e del pavimento, e altri dettagli, nella terza tavola. Elementi che compongono questa vettura anche nella tavola finale. L'arte del carradore arriva a un grado di estrema raffinatezza nel mondo romano. Lo sviluppo della rete viaria esercita su questa attività artigiana un influsso molto positivo. Compaiono nel tardo impero anche carri coperti, anticipazioni per molti versi della carrozza. Dopo la parentesi medievale, durante la quale il carro vive nelle forme più rozze, con impiego limitato al trasporto e con attenzione esclusiva alla sua solidità, un risveglio si ha nel Duecento: compaiono carrette eleganti, riservate alle castellane (anzi sono promulgati severi editti per vietarne l'uso alla borghesia arricchita). Piano piano l'uso della carrozza si estende: la moglie di Galeazzo Maria Sforza ne ha dodici, eleganti, fornite di piumini e di materassi, con ricchi finimenti. Nasce a Ferrara nel 1534 la prima officina per la fabbricazione delle carrozze. Nel Cinquecento le famiglie nobili italiane ne fanno largo uso. All'estero la diffusione invece è lenta. I proprietari di carrozze fanno a gara ad averne di lussuose. Il popolo non le vede di buon occhio: sono ingombranti, rumorose, pericolose. Tavole di dettagli della berlina alla francese, una diligenza all'inglese, vista di fronte, lateralmente e in spaccato, una vettura a due posti, i cui occupanti siedono uno di fronte all'altro. Una vettura molto angusta, e vi può trovar posto una sola persona. Si chiama désobligeante perché, appunto, è tale da scoraggiare o mettere a disagio eventuali altri occupanti. Un calesse. È una vettura a quattro ruote, per solito scoperta, tirata da due o quattro cavalli, molto elegante. Il termine indica qualche volta anche una sorta di carrozza leggera con mantice, per passeggiare nei parchi. Il cabriolet è una vettura leggera a due ruote, usata anche per servizio di piazza. Una carrozza a quattro posti: prospetto, sezione e pianta. Una carrozzella a un posto per passeggiare nei parchi. Una portantina e particolari della stessa. Arnesi del carrozziere, soprattutto pialle di svariati tipi. È nel 1600 che fanno la loro comparsa a Parigi le prime carrozze pubbliche chiamate fiacres (da Saint-Fiacre). Il primo regolamento, in Francia, per le vetture di piazzo. è del 1657, i primi omnibus sono del 1662. I progressi della tecnica costruttiva sono stati notevoli: le carrozze hanno vetri (fabbricati in Italia), buone molle d'acciaio per assorbire gli urti (fabbricate in Inghilterra). Se ne servono non solo i ricchi ma i borghesi dotati di mezzi. Ce ne sono sempre di ornatissime, ma in genere la decorazione diminuisce a vantaggio della leggerezza e della velocità. Quelle dei ricchi hanno cocchiere, battistrada, magari una scorta armata per difendersi dai briganti. Nel Settecento la carrozza ha ormai larghissimo impiego e le epoche di Luigi XV e di Luigi XVI sono quelle del suo massimo splendore: grazia ed eleganza si accoppiano a funzionalità. La viabilità migliora, si stabiliscono regolari servizi di trasporto fra i vari centri, vengono emanati regolamenti per la marcia negli abitati, si moltiplicano i modelli per tutti gli usi. Expertly bound to style in half 18th century russia over period marbled paper covered boards, spine with raised bands in six compartments, morocco lettering piece in the second comartments, the others with an overall repeat decoration in gilt The best contemporary account of the French and Indian War, justly celebrated for its cartography and textual content, and one of the great rarities of colonial Americana: complete with all maps and the elusive errata leaf. Virtually all of Mante's account relates to the war in North America, with detailed narratives of Braddock's campaign and the other frontier and Canadian campaigns of the conflict. The work is particularly desirable for its contemporary descriptions of Pontiac's War, a campaign in which the author participated as Major of Brigade to Colonel Dudley Bradstreet. In addition, the introduction includes an interesting account of young George Washington's escape in 1753 from assassination by an Indian who acted as his interpreter and guide. Mante evidently took great care to gather information that was both historically and cartographically accurate for the present work. The maps are praised by all bibliographers as being by far the best relating to the war, and include several seminal maps which are the most accurate produced to that time. Leaves 24; 22; pp. (2), vi, pp. 60, with 106 (of 108) spendidly handcoloured engraved plates. Recent red morocco, richly gilt ornamented spine with green gilt lettered label, sides with gilt borders. The most splendid illustrated publication on German birds published in the 18th century and an extremely rare book. Since the middle of the last century only 2 copies, including the present one, have been offered for sale. One copy offered for sale by Hauswedell & Nolte in 1980 (auction 233 no. 234) lacking likewise 2 plates and the present copy, Sotheby's 7th June 1982 no. 25a, lacking 3 plates (1 plate has been supplied in the mean time). The famous ornithological library of Bradley Martin, for example, only had a copy with 62 plates./In the 18th century Nuremberg became the centre for producing superbly illustrated natural history books. This was principally due to the stimulus of Dr. Trew, a wealthy Nuremberg physician who assembled a number of young artists and scientists around him. Sibylla Merian lived in Nürnberg from 1670-1682 as well as Dürer who lived and worked in Nürnberg. Johann Israel Dietzsch and his children were well known artists of which Barbara Regina is best known./"… sondern auch so bekannte Künstler wie Barbara Dietzsch, deren Blumenstücke und Tierbilder in aller Welt Liebhaber fanden. "In the Royal Zoological Society's Museum in Amsterdam there is a copy of this book with 100 plates in 4 volumes. The text, however, is only for the first 50 plates. No other such copy is known and it is likely that this is unique… A copy with 50 plates, must, from a collectors point of view be considered complete". The comment in 'Fine Bird Books' is incorrect. The first text part was published in 1772 with 48 pages and the second part was published in 1777 with 44 pages. The first part describes plates 1-25 and the second one plates 26-50. The French text published in 1782 describes plates 1-25. This is all the text published. The almost always lacking plates 51-108 were separately published without text by Johannes Mätthaus Bechstein around 1800. Ripley and Scribner 'Ornithological Books in the Yale University Library' page 78, describe a complete copy. /Heidrun Ludwig in her 'Nürnberger naturgeschichtliche Malerei im 17. Und 18. Jahrhundert' pages 45-46 says the following about Dietzsch "Die Stärke dieser Vogelbilder liegt vor allem in der meisterhaften, haptischen Wiedergabe der Gefieder, die Dietzsch so überzeugend imitierte, dass ihre Stücke einen Vergleich mit den grossen Jagtstilleben von Jan Baptiste Weenix oder Willem van Aelst nicht zu scheuen brauchen… Die Schönheit der Vogelbilder Barbara Regina Dietzsch und ihre getreue Nachahmung natürlichen Vogelgefieders wurden von den zeitgenössischen Betrachtern bewundert"./The present copy which was sold in 1982 at Sotheby's, and which Antiquariaat Junk underbid at the time, lacked 3 plates, 41, 42 and 47. Two documents five years apart concerning the needed educational reform in Portugal at the Collegio de Nobres. The first document concerns rules to tighten up the procedures of the College of Nobles instituted by Sebastiăo José de Carvalho e Melo, Marquęs de Pombal just a year earlier to strengthen scientific education and the second with further reforms to educate the sons of the nobility with useful and practical knowledge, shortly before the school's failure. Pombal's attempt "was not a successful enterprise: among the main causes for its failures were financial difficulties, the attitude of the Portuguese nobility who antagonized such an educational programme, disciplinary questions, and the inappropriateness of the course to students who were too young to profit from them. Scientific teaching lasted for 5 years (1766-1772) " (In The Sciences in the European Periphery During the Enlightenment, p. 11). It would be the reforms of the University of Coimbra, to which the focus was transferred, that would finally succeed. OCLC locates a copy of the first document at the BN Espana.       Roma 1772 - - PRIMO STATO DI QUATTRO - Acquaforte e bulino, 1772, firmata in lastra . Esemplare della contemporanea tiratura romana. Magnifica prova, impressa su carta vergata coeva con filigrana "doppio cerchio e giglio con letter CB", con pieni margini, in perfetto stato di conservazione. Della serie Vedute di Roma. L’opera consiste in 135 lastre prodotte individualmente dal Piranesi per almeno 30 anni, da circa il 1745, fino alla data della sua morte. All’opera sono aggiunte poi 2 vedute realizzate dal figlio Francesco. Per la prima volta furono edite dall’editore Giovanni Bouchard nel 1751 (34 lastre), successivamente dallo stesso Piranesi editore a Palazzo Tomati in Roma (scritta che appare su molte tavole), fino alla stesura definitiva composta da 137 lastre. Successivamente alla morte dell’autore le lastre furono ereditate dal figlio Francesco, che ne curò la pubblicazione prima nella capitale, e successivamente a Parigi. Le lastre furono poi acquisite dalla Calcografia Camerale, oggi Calcografia Nazionale, dove sono tuttora conservate. Le opere che proponiamo fanno parte di un album nella stesura definitiva, stampato a Roma tra il 1770 ed il 1780. - THE FIRST STATE OF FOUR - Etching with engraving, 1772, signed on plate. Taken from Vedute di Roma; the whole work consists of 135 plates which have been individually produced by Piranesi along 30 years, from 1745 circa until his death. Two more works have been subsequently added, two plates by his son Francesco. They have been printed for the first time in 1751 (34 plates) by the editor Giovanni Bouchard, afterwards by Piranesi himself, publisher in Palazzo Tomati in Rome (as it is written on m,any plates), until the final edition of 137 plates. After Piranesi's death, his son Francesco inherited the plates, editing them first in Rome and then in Paris. Formaat elk ca. 107,3 x 40,6 cmRafael Sanzio da Urbino (1483 - 1520), in het Nederlands beter bekend als Rafa?l, vertrok vanuit Florence naar Rome vermoedelijk omdat hem ter ore was gekomen dat er in het Vaticaan, destijds onder Paus Julius II, priv?-vertrekken waren die opnieuw gedecoreerd moesten worden. In 1509 kreeg hij de opdracht voor ??n van de vertrekken. Met succes, al heel snel gold hij in het Vaticaan, op Michelangelo na, als de belangrijkste kunstenaar. Hij zou er de rest van zijn korte leven blijven. Rafa?l en zijn assistenten maakten de wand- en plafondschilderingen in de Loggia van het Vaticaan in 1518-1519.De prenten tonen de decoratie van de Loggia op de belangrijkste verdieping van het appartementen gebouw van het Vaticaan.De prenten zijn veelal een combinatie van Rafa?litsche design elementen omdat de originele fresco?s niet altijd zichtbaar meer waren. Ernesti studierte seit 1726 in Wittenberg und Leipzig Philologie, Philosophie, Theologie und Mathematik. 1730 wurde er Magister, 1731 Konrektor der Thomasschule zu Leipzig (und damit Vorgesetzter von Johann Sebastian Bach) und 1734 als Nachfolger von Johann Matthias Gesner deren Rektor, dem das vorliegenden Werk gewidmet ist. Zugleich seit 1742 a. o.Prof. der klassischen Literatur an der Universität, wurde Ernesti 1756 o.Prof. der Beredsamkeit und 1759 auch der Theologie. 1762 legte er das Rektorenamt nieder. Mit Gesner gilt Ernesti als Reformator der humanistischen Bildung, wobei ihm ein auf die Inhalte gerichtetes Studium der lateinischen Literatur als Bildungsziel vorschwebte er erwarb sich den Ehrennamen "Germanorum Cicero".       Paris 1772 - Map. Engraving with original outline coloring. Two sheets joined. Image measures 22 5/8 x 17 inches. Nice early edition of Bonne's Eastern part of North America, with the name Canada prominently featured in the center of the Great Lakes. Two separate maps have been professionally joined and line up well to show the region in detail during the beginnings of the American Revolution. Some foxing near the scale but otherwise a good example. Rigobert Bonne (1727-1795) was one of the most important cartographers of the late 18th century. He served as Hydrographer to France, and during his term, he produced a numbered of detailed and useful maps, particularly of coastal regions. His work is often devoid of decorative cartouches and compasses roses and marks a turn in European mapmaking away from decoration toward technical mapping.

      Robert Sayer, London 1772 - Map. Copper plate engraving with original outline hand coloring. Image measures 18 3/4 x 51" This large scale map of the Russian Empire covers the European as well as the Asian portions of Russia. Extends from the Black Sea and the Baltic Sea east to include an unusual mapping of Kamchatka, and beyond to the speculatively mapped Alaskan Peninsula of North America. Includes Novaya Zemlya in the Arctic. Includes parts of neighboring China, Poland and parts of Scandinavia. Intricately detailed, notes numerous town, with topography beautifully rendered in profile. Based on d'Anville's map, perhaps the most interesting feature is the mapping of the largely unexplored northeast portion of Asia. The mysterious Company's Land or "Land of the Company according to the Dutch" and "Land seen by Jean de Gama" as well as the Strait of Vries are identified. Company's Land and Gamma Land were considered to be the early mappings of the Kurin Islands discovered by Maerten de Vries and Cornelis Jansz Coen in 1643. They believed that these islands were part of America, which was separated from Asia by the Strait of Vries. In 1729, Bering finally debunked their myth, but the islands appeared in maps for another 50 years. Bering's Island is identified, where the great Arctic explorer ultimately died in 1741. The conjectural mapping of North America includes the note "Some pretend that this Land may be seen from Bering's Island. The "Present War between the Turks and the Russians" mentioned in the title refers to the Russo-Turkish wars fought between the 16th and 20th century, the longest series of conflicts in the history of Europe. Printed on two sheets, joined together (as issued). In very good condition with minor foxing. Some wear and toning along folds. Edge wear. Robert Sayer (1725-1794) was an important English publisher of maps, portraits, and nautical engravings. Partnering with John Bennett around the 1760s, the two published the works of well-known cartographers such as Kitchen, Jefferys, Belling, d'Anville and others. This beautiful, large-scale map is an impressive example of his work.

John Lugar (1772/3-1855), architect, was the son of a Colchester carpenter. He established himself in London ca. 1799, and exhibited at the Royal Academy from that date on in due course he developed a very widespread practice as a country-house architect, which extended to Scotland and Wales as well as throughout much of England. His first book of designs, which helped bring his name to public attention, was his 1805 Architectural sketches for cottages, rural dwelling, and villas. Lugar was a practitioner of the Picturesque after the manner of John Nash and Humphry Repton, working in a wide variety of architectural styles including the 'Grecian', the Tudor Gothic, and that of the cottage ornée as well as the castellated. He also served as county surveyor for Essex from 1812 to 1816, and became a freeman of Colchester in 1812. (Thanks for information to Mr. John Dury, Essex).

      'Writing Royal' 4to., pp. [ii], 200, 221-372 (as usual). Occasional scatterings of very light foxing, but generally clean. Red calf, contemporary boards with later but sympathetic gilt spine; both boards heavily gilt in the herringbone style with borders and diamond-shaped centrepieces, suggesting a Scottish binding. Marbled endpapers, cloth hinges. In rebacking the binder has employed a French joint, seemingly to correct the original structure and give a better square at the foredge; the look is a little unusual, with a deep groove at the joint, but the work is neatly and skillfully done. Some slight splits to tail-cap, a few small scrapes to upper board, corners repaired but a very good, attractive copy.A2 is a cancel, H3 a cancelland; misnumeration and other errors as usual. Also available in 12mo., this 4to. version was priced on publication at a guinea, though copies were advertised for sale at 18s. on 9th July 1773; 780 copies remained in stock in 1775. Dibdin describes this edition, based on Coustelier's 1743 production, as 'very beautiful', though 'not esteemed for accuracy'.
