A VOYAGE ROUND THE WORLD. PERFORMED BY ORDER OF HIS MOST CHRISTIAN MAJESTY, IN THE YEARS 1766, 1767, 1768, AND 1769

London: Printed for J. Nourse and T. Davies, 1772.. xxviii,476pp. plus engraved folding plate and five engraved folding maps. Quarto. Contemporary calf, gilt spine with raised bands, red morocco label. Neat repairs at head and toe of spine and to lower front joint, else very good. Provenance: Samuel Reynolds Solly (armorial bookplate). First edition in English. Bougainville first undertook, at his own expense, an expedition to the Falkland Islands and Patagonia to secure them for French colonization. To avoid potential conflict due to Spain's envy of the acquisition, France gave up the territory to her. The narrative of that expedition was related in THE HISTORY OF A VOYAGE TO THE MALOUINE ISLANDS... (Paris, 1770). After delivering the Falklands to Spain, Bougainville was ordered across the Pacific to the East Indies, and from there to return home. The narrative of this part of the voyage comprises the text of the present volume. The completion of the three-year voyage marked the first official French circumnavigation and drew a good deal of French interest in the Pacific islands. The party collected much natural history information concerning the regions visited, with a chapter on that of the Falklands, as well as a history of their settlement. They stopped at many South Sea islands, among them Tahiti, and a long section on that island is included, as well as a vocabulary of the natives. Bougainville was in Buenos Aires when the order arrived for the expulsion of the Jesuits from Paraguay, which he describes in detail. "According to the title, this translation of Bougainville's VOYAGE AUTOUR DU MONDE... was made by Johann Reinhold Forster; it seems, however, that the actual translator was Georg Forster, while his father Johann contributed the preface, dedication and the numerous footnotes" - Hill. COX I, p.55. SABIN 6869. HILL 165. O'REILLY & REITMAN 285. BORBA DE MORAES, p.115.

From the Bishop of Concepcion, charged of the Jesuit Missions and the founding of important Chilean Institutions. 1772. Lima. Imprenta de los Huérfanos. In 8vo (184 mm x 132 mm). 1 ff. + 50. Contemporary limp vellum, recently bound, spine lettered in ink, slightly soiled. A fine copy, fresh and clean, upper and lower margin of title trimmed away from text. First edition and an attractive example of Limenian printing in the 18th century. Espiñeira (1727 ? 1778) was a Franciscan Priest, Bishop of Concepción de Chile from 1761 ?although not effective until 1764- until death found him; he first went to Chile with the commission of founding and directing the Colegio de Propaganda de Fide in Chillan, which purpose was the instruction of the natives. It is owed to him the organization of the Pehuenche territory. Following the Jesuit expulsion from South America in 1767, Espiñeira took over the administration of the Jesuit Missions in his Dioceses and in 1777 was responsible for the foundation of the Seminary San Carlos de Borromeo. Very rare, we find no copies sold since 1981. Medina, Lima, 1339.

He added to his income by travelling as an agent for seeds and farming implements."-ODNB. Fine set and quite scarce.         The Works of Shakespeare (12 Volumes)

London: R. Crowder, C. Ware, and T. Payne, 1772. As. Leather. Very Good. 12 Volume Set. Subtitle, "Collated With the Oldest Copies, and Corrected: with Notes, Explanatory and Critical: by Mr. Theobald." Spines have five raised bands with blind-stamped gilt rules and a pasted-on, crimson leather title block with blind-stamped gilt lettering and rules. The gilt is somewhat worn and faded and the title blocks have darkened. All volumes are aged, soiled and shelf-worn. Spine ends and corners are worn, chipped, cracked and/or frayed to the boards to varying degrees. Hinges are cracked and/or split to varying degrees. Vol. I, front cover is detached and a small section (about the size of a dime) is worn to the boards. Front paste-down paper is missing. Beginning with Vol. II, all volumes have a bookplate with a coat of arms and "H. Holland Edwards, Pennant Ereithlyn, North Wales" on front paste-downs. Presumably, these volumes were part of the library of the Rev. Howell Holland Edwards, Rector of the Second Portion of Waddesdon from 1794-1798 or '99. Another volume from his library (a bound volume of The Old Bailey Reports, previously belonging to Narcissus Luttrell) has found its way into the Harvard Law Library. The bookplate has ghosted onto the ffep in all volumes where it is present. Rear cover has a small section (about the size of a dime) worn to the boards. Vol. VII front cover is lose, rear cover is detached. Laid paper interiors are somewhat aged, but only very occasionally foxed. This is an extremely old and very rare set!

Saffroy I, 14146.

Paris: 1772 - One of the first studies in comparative cartography, here are two maps of the west coast of the United States from the Strait of Anian (modern day Alaska) to the tip of Baja California, one inset on the other, and with intriguingly different interpretations of the same area. These are extracts based on maps by Vischer of 1612 and 1641, and appeared in the Supplement to Denis Diderot's Encyclopedie. Both maps showing the fictitious Strait of Anian at the top; it was part of the legendary Northwest Passage, the long hoped for link of the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, whose existence many explorers attempted to prove, and which James Cook challenged in his third voyage of 1778. The smaller inset map shows much more of the Strait, along with an open sea, making a suggestion of a Northwest Passage. The coastlines vary in both maps, with the smaller one listing important place names such as C. de San Francisco and los Farilones; while the larger shows the Bay of San Miguel (current day San Diego). The larger map showing a section of coast where the Sierra Nevada are drawn called "Nova Albion", which was explored and claimed for England by Sir Francis Drake; the smaller map showing the entire west coast area as "Mexicana". Image sie: 12 3/4 x 12". Paper size: 18 1/2 x 15 1/4". Pedley #473; Wagner #632; Wheat # 159.

Travels into North America; Containing its Natural History, and a Circumstantial Account of its Plantations and Agriculture in General, with the Civil Ecclesiastical and Commercial State of the Country, the Manners of the Inhabitants, and Several Curious

London: T. Lowndes, 1772. 2 volumes. 8vo., (8 2/8 x 5 inches). Large engraved folding map and 6 plates (some minor offsetting, one or two pale marginal stains). Modern diced calf antique. Provenance: Bookplates of Ruthven Deane (1851-1934), "heart ornithologist" (Theodore Roosevelt), on each front paste-down and manuscript bibliographical notes tipped in before the first blank in volume one. "One of the most important and reliable eighteenth-century accounts of American natural history, social organization and political situation" (Streeter sale II, 823). Second English edition. First published in Sweden in three volumes in 1753, 1756, and 1761. Before journeying to North America Kalm had travelled extensively not only in Sweden, but also in Russia and the Ukraine. "...These volumes contain the most trustworthy description of Swedish settlements in...Delaware, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. The voyage was undertaken at the instigation of Linnaeus, for the purpose of discovering whether any North American plants could be successfully introduced into Sweden" (Lande 482). "A work of high character, especially for its natural history, for which the author was immortalized by Linnaeus" (Sabin) who named the "Mountain-Laurel" Kalmia latifolia, the state flower of both Pennsylvania and Connecticut, for him. Sabin 36989. Oblong 8vo., (5 4/8 x 8 4/8 inches). 86 fine chromolithographed plates and 29 half-tones with additional colour, of varieties of fruit including apples, pears, peaches, plums, grapes, currants, gooseberries, raspberries, blackberries, rhubarb, asparagus, strawberries, and even dewberries, trees, shrubs and flowering plants. Contemporary black cloth. Provenance: with the ink stamp of W.T. Mitchell and Son, Nurserymen of Beverly in Ohio on the endpapers, and their ink stamps with pricing information on some plates throughout. A fine album of extraordinarily colourful plates of plants of all varieties available from the Mitchells of Ohio, printed by a variety of printers local to Rochester in New York. Each plate is accompanied by a short caption describing the plant: this of the Wragg cherry "Origin somewhat uncertain: supposed to be Russian. Tree very hardy, enduring extreme cold, and succeeding generally. Quality fine." "As Rochester's gardening flourished a local bookseller with an interest in the subject, D.M. Dewey, began to collect and publish coloured plates of fruit, flowers, shrubs, and fruit-bearing or purely ornamental trees. Selections of these plates sold by Dewey and others from the 1850s to the last decade of the century were usually bound into pocket-sized books about ten by six inches with stout leather covers, often stamped with the name of the nursery or the salesman offering the plants portrayed within. Dewey also recognised the wider appeal of the coloured plates described by Charles van Ravenswaay as 'an innovation in American popular art' ("A Nineteenth-Century Garden", 1977, page 20...). Their polychromic attractions were extended to a larger audience in small selections from a larger-sized series presented in decorative bindings, ... the earliest plates were simple watercolours, but later, as the demand grew, the technique of theorem paintings coloured with the help of stencils was used to multiply the number of copies as quickly and as cheaply as possible. Later still engraved or lithographed outlines were coloured by hand, and finally chromolithographs printed in colour began to replace more laborious procedures, though some of these were finished by hand too. Most of these processes involved the labour of teams of artists and colourists, one or two of whom went on to establish themselves as rivals to Dewey, though none achieved the same success" (Oak Spring Pomona 64). &c. &c

Paris: J P Costard, 1772 6 volumes: viii+485 pages; 500 pages; 501 pages; 479 pages; viii+456 pages; 466 pages. Duodecimo (7 1/4" 4 1/2") issued in original vellum with labels to spine. 1st French edition translated from the second English edition. Richard Pococke was an English prelate and anthropologist. Spelling in the French [Peckocke]. He was Protestant Bishop of Ossory (1756-65) and Meath (1765), both dioceses of the Church of Ireland. However, he is best known for his travel writings and diaries. Pococke was born in Southampton and educated at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, receiving a Bachelor of Law degree. His father was Rev. Richard Pococke and his mother was Elizabeth Milles, the daughter of Rev. Isaac Milles. His parents were married on 26 April 1698. Pococke's uncle, Thomas Milles, was a Professor of Greek. He was also distantly related to Edward Pococke, the English Orientalist and biblical scholar. His family connections meant he advanced rapidly in the church, becoming vicar-general of the diocese of Waterford and Lismore. He seems to have spent far more time traveling than attending to his duties as a churchman and spent 1733-36 undertaking a series of tours in Europe. From 1737-42 he visited the Near East,[3] visiting Egypt, Jerusalem, Palestine and Greece. These travels were later published in his 'Description of the East' of 1743 and 1745, works which were praised by Edmund Gibbon. During the years 1747-60, Pococke made a number of tours around various parts of Ireland. The longest of these tours occurred in 1752, when he traveled to just over half of Ireland's counties. He kept a record of this tour, but did not publish it. It ended up in the library of Trinity College, Dublin. Eventually, in 1891, an edited edition of Pococke's 1752 tour was published by George Thomas Stokes. He was made bishop successively of Ossory, Elphin and of Meath in 1765. He spent many of his later years in travel throughout Britain and Ireland, publishing accounts of many of his journeys. He died during a visitation at Charleville Castle, near Tullamore, County Offaly, Ireland, in 1765. On his death, many of his manuscripts were given to the British Library. He was buried at Ardbraccan, County Meath, Ireland. Condition: 6 of 7 volumes. Volume 7 was published in 1773, a year later, and is usually not found with the six volumes published in 1772. Bound in the original velum, which has stiffened with age and chipped away at spine ends and on some volumes of the spine. This was first published in English in three part, bound in two, in 1743 and volume 2 in 1745 in folio format. Internally a very good copy. . First French Edition. Original Velum. Very Good. Duodecimo.

The Lion and the Boar. From the Original Picture, Painted by Snyders, in the Collection of His Grace the Duke of Newcastle

London: John Boydell, 1 January 1772. Mezzotint, printed in colours and finished by hand, by Richard Earlom. 15 3/4 x 19 3/4 inches. 20 1/4 x 24 1/4 inches. A fine and rare coloured print by one of the most skilful of all mezzotinters after Snyders original A stirring and powerful illustration of the forces of nature at a climactic moment. Frans Snyders was born in Antwerp in 1579. He studied under Peter Breughel from 1593 and perhaps Hinorck Van Balen. He completed his apprenticeship in 1602 and went to Italy in 1608-1609. On his return to Antwerp he began by painting flower and fruit pieces and idyllic scenes and only later turned to scenes from the hunt and wild animals. A friend of Rubens, Snyders came to be held in high regard and he is still recognised as an early master of the genre. Richard Earlom (1743-1822) studied under Cipriani, "and in 1765 became known to Alderman Boydell, who entertained so high an opinion of the young artist that he employed him to make drawings from the celebrated collection of pictures at Houghton, and now at St. Petersburg, for the engravers to work from. In 1757 he was awarded a premium by the Society of Arts. In the art of mezzotint engraving Earlom was his own instructor. His plates show great technical skill... and are highly valued by the connoisseurs... Earlom was not less successful in his engravings in the chalk manner. A fine example in this way may be seen in his figure of Alope after Romney. He also engraved a series of prints after the original drawings of Claude Lorraine, in the possession of the Duke of Devonshire... He died 9 Oct. 1822, in Exmouth Street, Clerkenwell... He engraved over sixty plates in mezzotint, among which are The Royal Academy, after Zoffany; Samuel Barrington, after Reynolds; Richard, viscount Fitzwilliam, after Howard; William Henry, duke of Gloucester, after Hamilton; Horatio, lord Nelson, after Beechey; William Pitt, after Dupont; the set of six plates of the Marriage à la Mode, after Hogarth; two flower pieces, after Huysum; Blacksmith's Shop, and the Forge, after Wright."         Nieuwe en Nauwkeurige Kaart van een gedeelte van Noord Amerika, Behelzende Nieuw Engeland, New York, Pensylvania, New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island, een Stuk van Virginia, Kanada en Halifax

Utrecht: J. v. Schoonhoven, 1772. Copper-engraved folding map, engraved by Carel Jacob de Huyser, full period hand-colouring. 22 1/2 x 31 1/2 inches. Large and detailed map from a rare edition of Kalm's Travels. This map was published within the rare first Dutch edition of Kalm's Travels, the "most trustworthy description of Swedish settlement in 18th century Delaware, New Jersey and Pennsylvania" (Howes). Between 1748 and 1749, Peter Kalm, a noted Swedish naturalist and student of Linnaeus, traveled throughout the northeast of America, specifically in Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, and Canada, surveying the countryside, and recording notes on the inhabitants, the fauna, and the flora of the region. Returning to his native Stockholm, Kalm there published the first edition of his observations between 1753 and 1761, with Dutch and English editions soon to follow. The Dutch edition was the first edition to contain a map. The map principally depicts the region in which Kalm travelled, as far south as the Chesapeake and as far north as Quebec. However, the map extends quite a bit westward than would be expected, showing the Ohio River extending into present-day Kentucky. Interestingly, the map is among the earliest maps to identify petroleum in Pennsylvania, close to the location where oil was first discovered in Titusville in the mid-19th century.         A Voyage to the Cape of Good Hope Towards the Anarctic Polar Circle and Round the World but Chiefly Into the Country of the Hottentots and Caffres, From the Year 1772, to 1776

Andrew Sparrman was a Swedish physician and naturalist.  He arrived in South Africa on 10 January 1772.  He joined Captain Cook on the Resolution on 22 November 1772.  Returning in 1775, he undertook further exploration that lasted until April 1776, taking him as far as Kaffraria - what is today the southeast part of Eastern Cape of South Africa.  Sparrman's account of Cook's voyage, as well as his exploration in Africa, are described in this book. Included is a brief glossary of Hottentot language and full page plates of indigenous animals, as well as the original errata and instructions to the bookbinder. Two volumes, in a recent fine half leather binding over marbled paper boards with leather corners, raised and gilt spine bands, gilt rules, and red spine labels.  The binding is nearly as-new.  The contents are exceptionally clean and well-preserved, with only trivial scattered hints of spotting.  The pages are bright and clean, with immaculate illustrated plates, including the striking Volume I frontispiece plate "Prospect of the Country at the Cape of Good Hope".  The large folding map at the end of Volume I is also clean and intact with no tears.  Sparrman's work was one of the earliest on Southern Africa and the Southern Oceans.

NACHRICHTEN VON DER AMERIKANISCHEN HALBINSEL CALIFORNIEN: MIT EINEM ZWEYFACHEN ANHANG FALSCHER NACHRICHTEN

Mannheim: Churfurstl. Hof-und Academie-Buchdruckerey, 1772.. [16],358,[1]pp. plus two engraved plates (on one sheet) and folding map. Small octavo. Modern half vellum and marbled boards, spine gilt. A bit of light tanning and an occasional light fox mark. Three small purple ink spots in lower portion of map. Near fine. First printing of this rare and important account of Lower California by the German Jesuit, Jacob Baegert. Baegert lived in Baja California for a period of seventeen years (1751-68) and spent most of his time at the Mission of San Luis Gonzaga, leaving after the expulsion of the Jesuits in 1767. He provides some important details on the culture of the Indians of Baja California, including the Pericues, Guiacuras, and Cochiemes. Part one is an overview of California, is climate and products; part two describes the inhabitants; and the third part contains an account of the introduction of Christianity to California. Wagner states that the German Jesuits were especially dissatisfied toward the end of the Jesuit regime in California, and Baegert's bitterness is evident in his book: "...it was a land full of ferocious beasts and even more ferocious Indians, the soil was poor, the water undrinkable and there was no fuel to be had." The fine and important map was made by the fellow Jesuit, Ferdinand Consak, and is described by Streeter as "most helpful in giving the location of the many Jesuit missions in Lower California. It also shows the route along the west coast of Mexico followed by Baegert in going to California in 1751 and his route out in 1768, after the expulsion of the Jesuits." The top right corner of the territory (present day Arizona) is labeled, rather ominously, "Los Apaches Barbari." The excellent plates, which were apparently not issued with all copies, depict male and female California Indians. A prime early account of Baja California, with an important map and plates of the region. HOWES B29, "b." HILL 46. COWAN, p.27. SABIN 4363. BELL B5.?? STREETER SALE 2442. BARRETT 129.
