TRAVELS THROUGH THAT PART OF NORTH AMERICA FORMERLY CALLED LOUISIANA...ILLUSTRATED WITH NOTES CHIEFLY TO NATURAL HISTORY. TO WHICH IS ADDED BY THE TRANSLATOR A SYSTEMATIC CATALOGUE OF ALL THE KNOWN PLANTS OF ENGLISH NORTH AMERICA

London. 1771.. Two volumes. viii,407; [4],432pp. Half titles in each volume. Contemporary calf, spines gilt. Extremities rubbed. Contemporary bookplate on front pastedowns, modern bookplate on rear pastedowns. Some light foxing and toning. Very good plus. Bossu went to Louisiana in 1750 as a captain of the Marines. This narrative is comprised of a series of twenty-one letters to the Marquis de L'Estrade describing Bossu's life and travels in the vast Louisiana country from 1751 to 1762. Bossu's ventures ranged from Fort Chartres, in present-day Illinois, to Mobile, and along the Mississippi. His visit to New Orleans took place only thirty years after its founding, and he was able to gather considerable information from the memories of locals. "Bossu wrote well and his letters not only give an interesting picture of life in the Mississippi Valley and the Mobile Country to the east at the beginning of the second half of the eighteenth century, but incorporated also are many sketches of events in preceding years" - Streeter. This is the first English edition, to which Howes assigns the same "b" rating as the suppressed first edition of 1768. "The first volume is almost entirely filled with historical and personal sketches of the Southern Indian Tribes of the present United States" - Field. Almost all of the second volume of this edition is given over to the catalogue of plants, making it an important piece of American natural history. The catalogue, which does not appear in the first edition, was compiled by Johann Reinhold Forster, the well known German explorer and botanist, based on specimens of North American plants he saw in England, and on his translation of the work of Swedish botanist Pehr Lofling describing the plants he collected in northern South America in 1754-56. A handsome copy. CLARK II:5. SABIN 6465. SERVIES I, p.32. STREETER SALE 1518 (ref). HOWES B626, "b." MEISEL III, p.349. TAXONOMIC LITERATURE 1825, 4921. FIELD 157.

        LS ("Joseph Core[gent]").

Vienna, 3. III. 1771. - 4to (224 × 175 mm). 1 p. on a single bifolium. Addressed to Nicolaus Esterházy nicknamed "the Splendid", in German. - The later emperor Joseph II, famous for his enlightened and anti-clerical reforms, writes to Nikolaus Esterházy, the Hungarian prince and main patron of the composer Joseph Haydn, about another Hungarian noble, the count Christoph Erdödy, whose lavish lifestyle had forced him to borrow immense sums of money. Joseph complains that Erdödy’s "confused legal disputes" ("seine verwirrten Rechtshändel") seem to drag his own name into these affairs. He asks Esterházy to investigate Erdödy’s conduct and give him the warning that Joseph might be very displeased. Later in the 1770s Erdödy had to sell some of his land and estates. - Light browning, slight flaw to verso from opening of the seal (of which some remnants survive), but otherwise in fine and fresh condition. Provenance: Alfred Bovet (1831-91), his sale Charavay, 1887, lot 97.

Mantissa Plantarum altera generum editionis VI. & specierum editionis II.

Holmiae, L. Salvii, 1771. pp. (6), 143-588. Contemporary half calf, gilt ornamented spine with gilt lettered label. A fine copy of the second 'Mantissa' which was published separately, in a much too small edition. It is an indispensable supplement to the 'Species Plantarum'. It also contains tucked away a zoological appendix, in fact the second appendix 'Regni animalis appendix' (pp. 521-552). W. Junk in 1935 made a reprint of these two appendices 'Linné Systema Naturae: Appendices Zoologicae. Holmiae 1768-1771. together with a commentary. "Der II. Nachtrag enthält auf 32 Seiten 123 Tiere (34 Vertebrata, 49 Insekten... und 40 Vermes, die allerdings grössenteils Mollusken sind" (Junk p. 8).//The second 'Mantissa' is a very rare item. Already in 1916 Dr. W. Junk stated: 'Jetzt fast unauffindbar' and in his '5o Jahre Antiquar' he calls it a 'Rarissimum'./"Linnaeus should be granted the last word on his taxonomic method. The preface to the second part of his 'Mantissa', dated 1 September 1771, contains this summary, composed in 'the twilight of his life'. It is given here in Svenson's translation (1945): 'Some botanists talk loudly about the 'Natural Orders' in place of a method, but so long as there is no essential character of an order, by which the genera can be combined or distinguished from those of different orders, these orders remain as a bell without a clapper. However, their use in other respects may be of the greatest importance' (Stafleu, Linnaeus and the Linnaeans p. 139). Small piece of paper cut away and replaced at the lower margin of the title-page not affecting the text.//Provenance: Stamp of Joh. Eustach von Görtz, Prussian diplomat (1737-1821) on title-page.//Hunt 596; Hulth 25; Sandberg, A catalogue of the works of Linnaeus no. 114; Stafleu & Cowan 4831.

LIST OF MONIES OWED TO REPRESENTATIVES OF THE UPPER HOUSE OF THE CONNECTICUT GENERAL ASSEMBLY FOR THE OCTOBER 1771 SESSION, SIGNED BY ROGER SHERMAN, OLIVER WOLCOTT AND OTHERS].

[Np, but likely New Haven]. November 1771. - [1]p. plus integral docketing leaf. Folio. Backed with tissue. Faint old fold lines. A few small edge tears at folds, repaired. Minor soiling. Very good. In a red half morocco and cloth clamshell case, spine gilt. List of monies paid to twelve members of the House of Assistants of the Connecticut General Assembly, signed by several of them, including two future Signers of the Declaration of Independence, Roger Sherman and Oliver Wolcott. Sherman is notable as the only person to sign all four of the major foundational documents of United States - the Continental Association, the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, and the U.S. Constitution. He also served on the Committee of Five that drafted the Declaration of Independence, and later drafted the Connecticut Compromise for the U.S. Constitution, which proposed a bicameral representative government and guaranteed equal representation in the Senate for every state, no matter its size. Wolcott signed not only the Declaration, but also the Articles of Confederation, and later served as Connecticut's fourth governor. This document was likely written up at New Haven, which served as the joint capital of Connecticut with Hartford until 1776, hosting the October legislative sessions. In addition to Sherman and Wolcott, it is signed by representatives William Pitkin, Robert Walker, Abraham Davenport, William Samuel Johnson, Joseph Spencer. The remaining members are noted as having been "paid by receipt." It is docketed on the verso and signed by Joseph Trumbull, deputy to the Assembly. For his time in the House of Assistants (later the Connecticut Senate), Sherman was paid £6/18/0; Wolcott, £5/15/4. A nice document, signed by two future Signers of the Declaration of Independence.

Traité de la circulation et du crédit

Amsterdam: Marc Michel Rey,, 1771. Octavo (198 x 118 mm). Contemporary mottled calf, spine decorated gilt in compartments, red morocco label. With the additional 8-page note on the state of English finances in 1770 (interim half-sheet H*) and the errata leaf inserted after p. 128. A little surface wear to rear board, one leaf with small portion of blank upper margin missing. An excellent copy in a superb contemporary binding. First edition of this "sound and ingenious" (McCulloch) work on revenue and stock exchange transactions. The main premise of Pinto's argument is that the national debt, instead of being a burden, has been the principal source of the wealth and power of England. The work excited much controversy on publication: it was translated into English by Rev. S. Baggs, and published with notes, in 1774. Pinto (1715–1787) was born in Amsterdam. He was descended from a Portuguese family and lived for some time at Bordeaux. "He then settled in Holland, where he soon made a large fortune and an equally great reputation. The Stathouder William IV (1747–51) had a very high opinion of his advice, both on administration and finance. He was as tolerant as he was high-minded, and his benevolence won him popularity" (Palgrave).

Extract uit de notulen van weth[ouders] en raad der stad Vere.[Veere?], [18 July 1772-19 June 1773, 7 April 1787]. (5) Reglement voor die van de haven der stad Vere ter vis-vangst vaaren.Middelburg, Adriaan de Vin, [1 June 1774].With a woodcut Veere coat of arms on the title-page of each of the 4 printed ordinances (3 different blocks). 5 items in 1 volume. 4to. Contemporary marbled wrapper backed with plain paper.

Cf. Het Utrechts Archief 53 (De Beaufort family archive), item 242 (similar printed ordinance of 1771); NCC & STCN (2 copies of a 1770 ordinance by the Stadholder); for fishing and the fish tade in Veere: Kees Leeman, De geschiedenis van de Veerse visserij 1250-1961, 2nd ed., 1997. Contemporary collection of 4 extremely rare printed ordinances and regulations concerning fishery and the fish trade at Veere, near Middelburg in Zeeland, none recorded in NCC or STCN, plus 7 manuscript extracts from minutes of the meetings of the Veere city council on the same subject. The city had been a leading fish market place since the Middle Ages, held a privilege for the inspection and taxation of fish caught in the region and authorized the auctioneers. To avoid taxes some people transported fish out of the city before it was sold. The first three ordinances attempted to reassert control over the fish trade, though the fact that the authorities found it necessary to issue new ordinances every few years suggests they were not very successful. Each ordinance refers to the previous one, showing that the Council issued none between these three. The fourth printed item gives guild regulations for fishermen using the city harbour, who are required to register their crew members, keep them orderly and make payments to the guild. The manuscript begins on the final integral blank of the 1771 ordinance. From differences in the handwriting it appears that these extracts of minutes were written over the years as the issues came up in the Council. Amusingly, the family name of the printer and publisher of the 1774 regulations is "De Vin" (The Fin). In very good condition. Spine faded and tattered. A remarkable contemporary collection of unique items concerning fishery and the fish trade in Veere.
