Complementing the three folding engraved maps are several plans and coastal profiles and four fine plates depicting the indigenous peoples of the Arctic regions. Kerguelen-Trémarec's later expeditions included a voyage to the South Seas, where he discovered the Kerguelen and Desolation islands in the Antarctic in 1772. SABIN 37616. JCB 1493-1800, III:1806.

A Journal of a Voyage round the World in His Majesty's Ship Endeavor, in the Years 1768, 1769, 1770, and 1771. [-] To which is added a Concise Vocabulary of the Language of Otahitee.

London, Printed for T. Becket and P. A. De Hondt, in the Strand. 1771 - First edition, second issue, without the dedication leaf. The first printed account of Cook's First Voyage, and discovery of the eastern coast of Australia. Quarto, size of the binding: 8 1/2 inches x 10 3/4 in., title-page; 130 pp. + [4]pp. (three are printed pages of the Vocabulary). Approx. page size: 8 1/4 in. x 10 5/8 in. Old diced calf sides and corner-pieces, with most of the leather now chipped from the spine (some of the gilt titling is present), and marbled paper over boards, early, inner cloth hinges. This copy bears the engraved heraldic bookplate of English novelist, Anthony Trollope (1815-82), printed on blue-gray paper and initialed in ink: R.B. [Rare Book?, possibly written in by Trollope], and the bookplate of Cleveland, Ohio book collector, William G. Mather (1857-1951) and two mounted early catalogue entries, and a mounted, typed letter from Cleveland, Ohio based booksellers, Burrows Brothers, describing this copy. The early binding shows wear to the spine, cover corners & edges, and to the marbled paper, small ink stains, spots to the title-page. A rare book. From the Burrows Brothers letter to another book collector: "Oct. 28, 1915. With a lot of books recently received from a library of a Massachusetts Collector, is an exceedingly valuable book, probably as scarce as we have ever had. It is a copy of the rare first edition of Cook's 'Journal of a Voyage Round the World.' London, 1771. This edition is apparently almost unknown. The only other copies we find any record of being one in the Bodleian Library, and the other described in one of Magg's Lists some time ago, clipping from the latter being mounted in this volume. We feel sure that our copy is as fine and prefect as they catalogue, and in addition it has an extra value, as it carries the Book Plate of Anthony Trollope. We would like to have you see this volume as we think you would like to become its owner. We have looked through all our sales and auction records, biographies and bibliographies, and find no notice of this book, or that a copy has ever been offered for sale, except as above. This Journal was published anonymously, and it is the first publication containing the Narrative of Cook's First Voyage. It was surreptitiously published two years before Hawkesworth's eagerly awaited accounts. It was wrongly attributed to Banks and Solander, but was probably the journal of one of the civilians who died at Batavia. [signed]: Wm. Van Sittert." [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

MEDITAZIONI SULLA ECONOMIA POLITICA. Prima edizione napoletana.

Fresco esemplare marginoso, ben conservato.

Chronicon de Gestis Principum Vicecomitum ab anno MDDL usque ad Annum MCCCLXX. Accedit Opusculum ejusdem Authoris De Bello Canepiciano. Quae omnia ex Manuscripto Codice Bibliothecae Ambrosianae ediderat Ludovicus Antonius Muratorius.

apud Federicum Agnellum,, Mediolani, 1771 - In-4° (235x185mm), pp. (2), LX, 393, (1) di errata, legatura coeva m. pelle con filetti in oro e titolo in oro su tassello verde. 2 testatine, 2 capilettera e 3 finaletti. Manno, IV, 14714. Cat. Hoepli, 497. Predari, 119. Cocconato, Piemontesi illustri, IV, 223. Brunet, Table, 25377. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The Natural History of the Human Teeth.

      J. Johnson, London 1771 - An exceptionally fine copy of "the first scientific study of the teeth and the basic to all modern dentistry" (Heirs of Hippocrates).?Norman 1116; Lilly, Notable Medical Books 131; Heirs of Hippocrates 968; Garrison-Morton 3675. "Hunter’s work on the structure and diseases of the teeth began a new era for dentistry in England, placing what had been an empirical art upon a basis of careful scientific observation, and providing a foundation for further research. In the Natural history, Hunter gave detailed accounts of the anatomy and physiology of the oral cavity and jaw, introduced the modern scientific nomenclature for the teeth, established the tooth’s construction of bone, pulp and enamel, and examined the processes of tooth development in fetuses and children" (Norman). "John Hunter (1728-1793) was brought from Scotland to London as a rough, uncouth twenty year-old to learn dissection at his brother William’s school of anatomy. John showed such a striking aptitude for the new activity that, within a year, he was demonstrating the art of dissection. Although he never had a traditional medical education, he began to study surgery at the age of twenty-three under William Cheselden (q.v.). John Hunter’s superb background in comparative anatomy and pathology and his ability to relate structure to function made him one of England’s greatest surgeons and perhaps the founder of experimental surgery. Among his innovations was a technique for treating aneurysms without amputation by use of a single ligature to tie off the artery in the healthy tissue. He is said to have elevated surgery from an art to a science by showing that the proper route to the operating room led through the laboratory. In a busy life devoted to research, teaching, and the practice of surgery, Hunter found time to study the structure, development, and diseases of the teeth and to collect and arrange a series of dental specimens. Hunter’s two treatises on the teeth rank him as one of the founders of modern scientific dentistry. In the first book (1771), Hunter classified the teeth in the system still used today and was the first to state definitely that the human teeth ‘are never more than thirty-two.’ He traced their development in the fetus and the child and established their structure of pulp, bone, and enamel. At the end of the book are descriptions of devices to correct malocclusion and even suggestions for a method of transplantation. The second volume (1778) dealt with pathology. Hunter discussed the diseases of the teeth, the alveolar processes, and the gums; abscesses; and nerve pains in the jaws. He concluded that tooth decay starts on the surface of the tooth and not in the interior. Like his brother William, John founded a famous museum. Housing more than 13,000 specimens demonstrating comparative anatomy and the physiologic processes in animals and man, it was also a menagerie that contained numerous live mammals. After his death, the great Hunterian Museum became the property of the Royal College of Surgeons. It was partially destroyed by Nazi bombs in 1941. John Hunter was a student of Percivall Pott, a teacher of Edward Jenner, and, with William Heberden, a consultant on an illness of Benjamin Franklin. Originally buried in St. Martin’s-in-the Fields, his body was moved to Westminster Abbey sixty-six years after his death." (Lilly). 4to (262 x 208 mm), beutiful and untouched contemporary English polished calf, edges blind tooled and gilt, raised bands, red title label to spine, upper part of front hinge cracked, but sewings still very strong, engraved book plate of William Constable, Esq. (1721-1791) English antiquary, collector and patron, pp. [8], [1] 2-128 [16] and 16 engraved plates. An exceptionally fine and fresh copy in its untouched contemporary binding. Voyage autour du Monde, par la frégate du roi La Boudeuse, et la flûte l'Etoile; en 1766, 1767, 1768 & 1769

Paris: chez Saillant & Nyon, 1771. Quarto, with 20 engraved charts, mostly folding, and three plates of boats; a few stains to endpapers and half-title but an excellent copy in handsome contemporary French cat's paw mottled calf, spine gilt with raised bands; contemporary armorial bookplate. Bougainville in the South Seas. First edition of Bougainville's narrative of his important voyage, the first French circumnavigation. Bougainville's description of his travels in the Pacific created enormous interest in Europe and was largely responsible for building up the romantic vision of a South Sea paradise where Rousseau's noble savage lived in a state of blissful innocence.Bougainville's expedition passed through the Strait of Magellan in January 1768. After some time looking for the mythical "Davis Land", said to be off the Chilean coast, they started on a direct route across the Pacific. They discovered the Tuamotus, sighted Tahiti in April, then visited Samoa, sailed through Melanesia, sighted the Great Barrier Reef, and passed through the Solomons and New Britain, to Batavia.Bougainville, not knowing of Wallis's stop there a year earlier, thought that he had discovered Tahiti, and his lengthy account of the island group is an interesting counterpart to Wallis's account. The vocabulary of three hundred words that he prints is the first such vocabulary of any Polynesian language to appear. 'It was only the Great Barrier Reef that prevented Bougainville landing on Australian soil. He had specifically set out to reach "New Holland" by running west from Quiros's "Espiritu Santo", but turned away from the obvious barrier presented by the reef. Had he made it, 'he would have come to the Australian coast near Cooktown, and would, likely enough, have been wrecked where Cook was wrecked two years later...' (Wood). The book was not a huge commercial success in its first edition, though its influence was immense: it has been estimated that only 1000 copies or less were published at the time, quite a small run for a voyage book at the time, but through its many subsequent editions and versions, translations and abridgements, it stayed permanently in print for at least a century. It was also the catalyst for intense discussion and philosophical argument - see for example the famous "supplement" by Diderot rejecting the notions of the "noble savage" and Taitbout's speculations on the fundamental differences between the "homme sauvage" and the "homme civilizé"

A Voyage to China and the East Indies, Together with a Voyage to Suratte [Toreen], and an Account of the Chinese Husbandry [Eckeberg], to which are added a Faunula and a Flora sinensis

London: Benjamin White, 1771., 1771. First English Translation. Two vols. Octavo. Bound in mottled brown calf, gilt ruled panneling to boards, with raised bands and gilt titles to spine; all edges red speckled. Illustrated with thirteen plates. With bookplate. Binding is worn, edges and corners worn, joints starting, several gouges to front board of volume one and one sizeable gouge to the rear of volume two, volume two has additonal paper label to spine. Internally clean with worm damage to rear of volume one and start of volume two. These three travel narratives give a comprehensive survey of contemporary knowledge about Asia. Osbeck's observations on Canton and Java take up the first volume and the first quarter of the second. Toreen's journey to Dutch Suratte, a trading post run by the Dutch East India Company, touches on visits to other Asian countries, including China. Eckeberg's Husbandry gives a full account of Chinese farming practices from a Western perspective, which expresses admiration for their skill and industry. Finally the sixty-nine page list of flora and fauna is a fascinating record of known species. John Reinhold Forster sailed with James Cook on his second voyage to find terra australis as a botanist. His work significantly influenced the development of ethnology and anthropology, and expressed concerns that European expansionism was damaging local environments. Armorial bookplate "Francis Freeling", Secretary of the Post Office, who oversaw numerous changes to the postal service, including the introduction of the penny post for most towns and the integration of steam trains and ships in place of carriages. Partie Occidentale De L' Empire de Russie?

Paris: 1771. Engraved map, two sheets joined together, 27" x 20", hand colored in outline, title cartouche in center of map. Ample margins, some minor aging, fold slightly visible; otherwise very good plus to near fine. Impression is bright and clean. Rigobert Boone (1727-1795) succeeded Bellin as the Royal Cartographer of France. He produced highly respected maps during his day, and was know for his accurate detail. This is an attractive and detailed large map of Russia. Sometimes this map is presented in two separate pages with a middle border, but this one is joined together, and actually looks better than the other version. The map itself covers Russia from the Baltic Sea to Siberia, and the Bering Straits. The map also covers European Russia, and its sub divisions, and a large title cartouche is in the center of the map in the upper section. Norwich. legends.mapsofworld.com

Le Guide du Traducteur. Or, The Entertaining and Instructive Exercises Rendered into French.

London: Printed for B. Law. 1771 - FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. 12mo, 163 x 98 mms., pp. [iv], 210 [211 - 212 adverts], contemporary sheepskin (very worn); lacks end-papers, edge of title-page chipped, lower corners of first few leaves chewed, lower corners of last three leaves also chewed, with slight loss of text. Not the most wonderful copy, but uncommon. Jean-Baptiste Perrin (fl. 1767 - 1798) was born in France and later emigrated to Dublin. He began publishing books about learning French, and his earliest work seems to have been Essai sur l'origine et l'antiquité des langues, which was published anonymously in 1767. His Entertaining and Instructive Exercises, alluded to in the title, was first published in the early 1770s, and at least another ten editions appeared during the 18th century. ESTC N2408 locates only the copy at Princeton.

THE GENTLEMAN AND CITIZEN'S POCKET-ALMANAC, BY WILLIAM EVITT, PRINTER. FOR THE YEAR 1772. FITTED TO THE USE OF PENNSYLVANIA AND THE NEIGHBORING PROVINCES. CONTAINING A MUCH GREATER VARIETY OF CURIOUS AND USEFUL LISTS, TABLES, &c. &c. THAN ANY OTHER ALMANACK, PRINTED ON THE CONTINENT OF AMERICA.

Philadelphia: William Evitt, [1771]. - [48]pp. plus fourteen unprinted leaves. 24mo. Contemporary marbled wrappers. Wrappers lightly worn. One contemporary manuscript inscription on one unprinted leaf, a few manuscript annotations in margins of printed pages. Light age-toning, offsetting on blank leaves. A near fine copy. An extremely rare colonial-era Pennsylvania almanac compiled and published by William Evitt. Drake records copies at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania and the American Antiquarian Society, but the AAS does not list this edition in their online catalogue. AAS/NAIP records the ten previous annual issues of this almanac, but not this edition, perhaps the last published with this title. However, AAS does hold a copy lacking the last leaf. This copy is in contemporary wrappers and has fourteen additional blank leaves, only one of which has a single inscription ("Thursday 10th [December] came Nancy"). A few contemporary annotations, however, are found in the margins of the printed text. In addition to the calendar, the almanac provides an extensive list of the "representatives, sheriffs, coroners, commissioners, and assessors throughout the province of Pennsylvania." Information on court sessions in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Maryland, and Virginia is also included. A rare surviving copy of perhaps the last issue of this popular Pennsylvania almanac. Not in OCLC or NAIP; listed in Evans (the imperfect AAS copy). DRAKE 9958. EVANS 12039. HILDEBURN 2651.
