Printed with the approbation of the chevalier de Borda as a shipbuilding manual for the use of the Gardes de la Marine, essentially the students of a distributed Royal Naval College. It was produced in dictionary form, without plates, with the intention of forcing the students to learn by observation in the shipyards; "it is on the shipyard, and with the book in hand, that a young man should follow the printed description: if the text was accompanied by figures, the reader would be tempted to stay in his room" (p.xxix). Ownership inscription verso of first blank, and elegant engraved book label to front pastedown, of Devis Decrès, future minister of the navy under Napoleon. Decrès had a brilliant career, a midshipman in 1779, he took part in operations in the Caribbean from 1780 to 1783, promoted to ship's ensign in 1782 at the time that he took part in the Battle of the Saintes. His ownership inscription gives his rank as lieutenant, placing purchase of this volume between 1786 and 1793, when he became a captain. Arrested as a noble at the outbreak of the French Revolution, he was reinstated in 1795 and placed in command of the Formidable, and in her took part in the attempted invasion of Ireland in 1796. He was promoted to contre-amiral in 1798 and commanded a light squadron during the invasion of Egypt, covering the landing in Malta. He took part in the Battle of the Nile in the Diane, managing to avoid the slaughter, and escaping to Malta, raising his flag in the Guillaume Tell. He was captured trying to break the blockade, and eventually exchanged back to France in August 1800. Napoleon personally presented him an with an honour sabre, and appointed him maritime prefect at Lorient. From 3 October 1801 to the fall of the Empire in 1814, he served as Napoleon's Minister of the Navy., being made a duke in April 1813. During the Hundred Days Decrès briefly resumed his post as Minister of the Navy. He died in a house fire in 1820. Craig p.16; Polak 3036. [Attributes: First Edition]

Berlin, Carl Friedrich Rellstab, (1771).. Quart. Zeitgenössischer marmorierter Pappband (etwas lichtrandig, Kapitale berieben). 20 Bll., 151 (+1) S., mit 1 gestochenen Karte und 52 teils ausfaltbaren Kupfertafeln. Sehr gutes Exemplar. Erste Ausgabe.

The book describes the geography, biology and anthropology of Argentina (then a Spanish colony), Patagonia, Tahiti and Indonesia (then a Dutch colony). The book was a sensation, especially the description of Tahitian society. Bougainville described it as an earthly paradise where men and women lived in blissful innocence, far from the corruption of civilisation.Bougainville's descriptions powerfully expressed the concept of the noble savage, influencing the utopian thoughts of philosophers such as Jean-Jacques Rousseau before the advent of the French Revolution. Denis Diderot's book Supplément au voyage de Bougainville retells the story of Bougainville's landing on Tahiti, narrated by an anonymous reader to one of his friends. Diderot used his fictional approach, including a description of the Tahitians as noble savages, to criticise Western ways of living and thinking.Sabin, 6864.

Fantastic Pre-Revolutionary letter regarding funding for Harvard and Native Americans: "But as Harvard College will receive for the future … in extending this good work of Civilizing and Gospellizing the Indians"

Hackney, April 29, 1771. 7.25" x 9.5". "Letter Signed, ""Jasper Maudit,"" as treasurer of the New England Company, 2 pages, 7.25"" x 9.5"", Hackney, April 29, 1771, to Andrew Oliver, agent for the company who had just been recently installed as Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts. Clean fold separations, small loss at bottom left corner affecting text, else very good condition. Maudit, treasurer of The New England Company, a missionary organization charged with the Christian conversion and education of Native Americans, writes to Oliver concerning monies destined for a new missionary (""Mr. Kirkland""), funds directed toward Harvard for the same purpose as well as Oliver's resignation as secretary of the organization, thanking him for remaining in the post for an additional year to allow the company to seek a replacement. Maudit writes, in large part: ""… The Genl Court expressed their satisfaction at the way opening for the spreading the Gospel amongst the Indians and conciliating their minds to the English Interest. Mr. Kirkland's Character is very pleasing and we hope he will continue an useful Missionary. Dr. Wheelock's misapplication of the Money Collected here was resented in the Genl Court, and must have a very bad effect on any future Collections for America. The Company have ordered £750 to be remitted for the Curr[en]t Service on Account of your advance to Mr. Kirkland tho' our Income doth not exceed £700 pr Ann. — But as Harvard College will receive for the future, by the Increase of the Rent from Dr. Williams's Estate a clear £150. p[e]r Ann[um]. Sterling, they will have sufficient to bear the whole Expence [sic] of Mr. Kirkland's Mission, (and we moreover hope That they and our Commissioners will prevail with the Scotch Society to join them in extending this good work of Civilizing and Gospellizing the Indians,) especially as the College have £1000 in hand of the Doctor's donation unapplied. The latter part of your Letter intimating your intent to resign, was received with no small concern by the Genl. Court, we cannot part with the Services of one who has so zealously attended to, and forwarded the great business of our appointment with such general satisfaction, but with regrett [sic] — I am glad to find you have agreed to continue another Year, and I wish you would add one more; but if this cannot be complied with, I hope you will continue untill [sic] some others fit and willing to act in this important business, shall be recommended to the Company to make choice of one of them for their Treasurer …"" Andrew Oliver had been appointed Lieutenant Governor in 1770 (his commission was dated October 19, 1770 and he was sworn in on March 14, 1771.) Thomas Hutchinson was sworn in as Governor the same day: ""Harvard congratulated them, and the students gathered in Holden Chapel and sang appropriately: 'Thus saith the Lord: From henceforth, behold! All nations shall call thee blessed; for thy rulers shall be of they own kindred, your nobles shall be of yourselves, and thy governors shall proceed form the midst of thee.' Of all the rulers of Massachusetts whom Harvard has contributed there have been no better and more able, yet more unfortunate men than this pair."" (Sibley's Harvard Graduates, vol. 7, p. 407) Jasper Maudit (1696-1771) was a London merchant and religious ""dissenter"" who served as the agent for Massachusetts Bay from 1762 to 1765. He also served as treasurer of the New England Company. (See Jasper Maudit Agent in London for the Province of the Massachusetts Bay 1762-1765, 1918; Craig Yirush, Settlers, Liberty, and Empire: The Roots of Early American Political Theory… 2011, p. 1; Philip F. Gura, Jonathan Edwards: America's Evangelical, 2006, p. 175) Oliver Cromwell commissioned the New England Company in 1649 and was granted a Royal Charter after the restoration of the monarchy by Charles II in 1662. The company's charter provided for the promotion and propagation of 'the Gospel of Christ unto and amongst the heathen natives in or near New England and parts adjacent in America."" To this end the company sent missionaries not only to New England but to New York and Virginia as well. Until the outbreak of the Revolutionary War in 1775, the North American administration was run by the Governor of Massachusetts. Following American independence, the company refocused its activities on the remaining North American British colonies in Canada and the West Indies: a mission it continues to fulfil to the present day (see http:///www.newenglandcompany.org for more information)."

An Essay on the First Principles of Government, And on the Nature...

1771. 2nd ed. London, 1771. Priestley's First Substantial Political Work, An Influence on the Constitutional Thought of the American Founding Fathers Priestley, Joseph [1733-1804]. An Essay on the First Principles of Government, And on the Nature of Political, Civil, And Religious Liberty. London: Printed for J. Johnson, No. 72, In St. Paul's Church Yard, 1771. xvi, 300, [4] pp. Includes two-page publisher advertisement. Octavo (8-1/4" x 5"). Later quarter speckled calf over speckled-paper boards, lettering piece and gilt fillets to spine, endpapers renewed. Very light soiling to boards, a few tiny gouges to board edges, some chipping to spine ends, corners bumped and lightly worn, hinges partially cracked. Moderate toning to text, light foxing in a few places, internally clean. $500. * Second (stated) edition, one of two issues from 1772, and the third edition overall if one includes the Dublin reissue of the first edition (1768). First published in London in 1768, Priestley's Essay was his first substantial political work, one that influenced several American founding fathers, such as John Adams and Thomas Jefferson. It expands the humanitarian beliefs in his Essay on a Course of Liberal Education (1765), which took issue with the authoritarian educational philosophy favored by John "Estimate" Brown in his Thoughts on Civil Liberty. Priestley argues for a liberal political philosophy as a matter of morality and a prerequisite for social progress. Adams and Jefferson owned copies of this book. A note in Sowerby says Jefferson often recommended it to others and cites a letter from 1802 in which he says it expressed the principles of the U.S. Constitution and their practical development in many of its articles. Sowerby, Catalogue of the Library of Thomas Jefferson 2332 (listing the second edition, London, 1771). www.johnadamslibrary.org/book/?book=241467Adams291.1 (listing the second edition). Piatti marezzati.

1771 - Manuscript ledger registering the marriages of Mexican Indians near Mexico City, with a beautifully illustrated title page, and in its colonial wallet binding. 1771-1815. Mexico. Folio. Attractive contemporary Mexican wallet binding: front board with hand-written paper label, ties fragmentary, overall in excellent condition. Manuscript on paper, edges tinted, marginal wormholes at gutter to a few leaves and away from text, very clean and fresh. 7,000 $ This volume is a truly remarkable finding: the binding is colonial artisanal production, preserved in its absolutely original condition; the title is naively illustrated with natural history scenes (different types of birds, fishes, and a rabbit), and is done with a very accomplished calligraphy. It records the marriages happened during the last years of the 18th century and beginnings of the 19th, from the towns of Asumpcion Aculco y Sa Maria Magdalena Atlosolpan, the church of Santa Cruz de Acatlan (Naucalpan), including the temples in Indian districts of San Juan Bautista (San Juan o San Juanico Nextipac), Nuestra Señora de la Asunción (Aculco, Iztapalapa) and Santa Maria Magdalena Atlasolpa (Magdalena Atlasolpa, Iztapalapa). The ledger is mostly about the marriages occurred in Iztapalapa and Naucalpan. The Nahuatl town of Naucalpan was an Aztec founded village in the outside northwest of Tenochtitlan. During the Spanish colony, Naucalpan was one of the most important evangelization sites. Now is a city and municipality located northwest of Mexico City in the adjoining State of Mexico. The Indian town of Iztapalapa was a Pre-Hispanic village in the shores of the Texcoco Lake nearby Mexico City that would become a “corregimiento” (colonial country subdivisions for administrative purposes) headed by Mexicaltzingo and later an Alcaldia Mayor.         Archive of Documents and Correspondence of Antoine Guerry Duclaud, native of La Rochefoucauld, French Officer, Deserter, Slave Trader and Plantation Owner in Surinam, beginning with his arrival in Surinam in 1771, to 1775

Archive of manuscript documents, correspondence, etc., 46 items, 162 pages, text in French and Dutch, from Surinam 1771-1775. Archive of manuscript materials which document the life of Antoine Guerry Duclaud, a French officer, who had destered, and travalled to Surinam via Guinea, with 12 slaves to set up as a planter in that colony. He settled in the coastal city of Paramaribo. Surinam was a center of the slave trade. Duclaud arrived in Surinam at a time of great distress occasioned by an increase in raids upon the plantations of the colony by an "army" of some "three to four thousand escaped slaves", called Maroons or "Djukas", some three to four thousand, who swept down upon the planters to seize goods, and who killed every white person who fell into their hands, in what Duclaud describes as "very imaginative ways." Surinam had some 200 plantations the work on which was performed by some 13,000 slaves. The plantations produced, sugar, coffee, cocoa and cotton. Conditions for the slaves were by every measure horrific, life expectancy for slaves in South America was extremely short. Climate, working and living conditions, and disease were especially deadly. Duclaud describes the tense situation in detail, each household was required to be armed and to help patrol the colony. Duclaud does not become a planter, but instead goes into business renting the slaves he brought with him from Guinea. The economic conditions of the colony worsen as the violence increases. Duclaud becomes depressed as the prospects worsen in his new home, he jumps at the chance to return to Europe, when his sisters inform him of the possibility of a pardon for deserting. Duclaud sells his property, house, furniture and slaves and returns to France in 1775. The archive presents a rare look at slavery and conditions in 18th century colonial Surinam. Duclaud's Residence and Plantation in Surinam 7 manuscript documents, Paramaribo, Surinam 1772-1774, in French, folio, 23 pages. Details the expenses incurred for my house including furniture and other commodities. Rare and interesting documents which detail the materials used to build the house, and the purchase of its furnishings. And a similar document in Dutch, folio, 9 pages. Contract made with "sieur Dupuy" a gentleman, before returning to Europe, yielding his effects, and the lease of his home and shop. But as Mr. Dupuy could not honor his purchase, the entirety was finally sold to Mr. Pujol. The document bears the signatures of the interested parties as well as witnesses. Folio, 4 pages. 3 documents, in Dutch, wills and powers of attorney. Folio, 10 pages. Transport of Slaves Autograph Document signed by Captain Ary van den Pot, Paramaribo, 20 December, 1771, one sheet oblong octavo, in Dutch. Captain Pot's receipt of 300 florins for the transport of slaves. This was the price paid by Guerry Duclaud to bring his twelve slaves from Guinea to Surinam, although two of them died during the voyage. SurinamLong detailed Autograph letter signed from Guerry Duclaud, Paramaribo, October 20, 1772, to his sisters in La Rochefoucauld, folio, 3 ½ closely written pages. Duclaud recounts in great detail his adventure thus far: "Mes tres cheres Seurs, … Duclaud writes at length about his family, his acquaintances, his desire to be married, to repay the money he owes to certain traders, and the costs and difficulties of his financial affairs. Especially the maintenance of his 10 slaves, several of whom he rents: "… je n'ay à la maison que 6 nègres, 4 filles et 2 hommes, j'en ay 2 qui sont loués a un capitaine de navire qui gagne chacun 24 sols par jour, 2 qui sont chez un maître charpentier pour 2 ans sans en retirer un sol bien au contraire, je paye 100 florins par tete pour chaque …" Duclaud, Guerry, Autograph Letter Signed, Paramaribo, April 1773, to his sisters in La Rochefoucauld, quarto, 3 pages. Not having received a reply to his previous letter, Duclaud writes another, six months later, which describes the events recounted in his earlier letter, but with les detail, his departure from Guinea with several slaves he had purchased, his arrival in Surinam and the revolt of the slaves, his wish to return to Europe, when he would no longer be considered a deserter, news of his family and of hs new "petite entreprise" - renting slaves: "… Duclaud, Guerry, Autograph Letter Signed, Paramaribo, March 18, 1774 to his sisters in La Rochefoucauld, folio, two pages A year later, Duclaud received news from his family, of his return to grace which makes him wild with joy. He then decided to sell everything and return to France. He paints a dark picture of the state of the colony in Surinam: "… The letter continues as Duclaud envisages his new life in his native country. Slave Rental Manuscript Document, signed by Guerry Duclaud, one sheet oblong small quarto, dated Paramribo, December 6, 1774. Having decided to return to Europe, the contract for the rental of two slaves is broken. "G. Duclaud made inquiries with the Compagnie des Indes about arranging to pay his invoices, with the ambassador to obtain his pardon papers, pointed out difficulties in recovering his money and his ardent desire to return to his family and relations. He is happy to return to La Rochefoucauld after an absence of 16 years, and he feels that it has changed for the better.         Partie Occidentale De L' Empire de Russie…

Paris: 1771 - Engraved map, two sheets joined together, 27" x 20", hand colored in outline, title cartouche in center of map. Ample margins, some minor aging, fold slightly visible; otherwise very good plus to near fine. Impression is bright and clean. Rigobert Boone (1727-1795) succeeded Bellin as the Royal Cartographer of France. He produced highly respected maps during his day, and was know for his accurate detail. This is an attractive and detailed large map of Russia. Sometimes this map is presented in two separate pages with a middle border, but this one is joined together, and actually looks better than the other version. The map itself covers Russia from the Baltic Sea to Siberia, and the Bering Straits. The map also covers European Russia, and its sub divisions, and a large title cartouche is in the center of the map in the upper section.

Jahrhunderts, darunter Gerard ter Borch, Pieter Breughel, Anthonis van Dyck, Jean-Baptiste Greuze, Louis Le Nain, Claude Lorrain, Gabriel Metsu, Adriaen van Ostade, Paulus Potter, Rembrandt van Rijn, Hubert Robert, Peter Paul Rubens, Jacob Ruisdael, David Teniers, Tizian Vecellio, Philips Wouwerman und vielen mehr. Graesse I, 306. Erste Ausgabe [Attributes: First Edition]
