Arte de Sombrerero [L'art de faire les chapeaux, in Spanish] Traducido al castellano, de orden de la Real Junta General de Comercio, Moneda, y Minas por D. Miguel Geronymo Suarez y Nu?ez.

Andres Ramirez, [ 1771.], Madrid - First edition in Spanish of L'art de faire les chapeaux, the first systematic and scientific study of the ancient process of hat-making, which Jean-Antoine Nollet had written for the Encyclopédie (1765). It deals with the raw materials, their preparation, manufacturing process and the dyes as well as the styles of hats. The plates, re-engraved for this Spanish edition are detailed depictions of the hatter's craft with excellent workshop scenes.Like his French counterpart Nollet, Suárez y Nu?ez was an enlightened polymath dedicated to the scientific exposition of crafts and industry. His magnum opus was the multi-volume Memorias instructivas, y curiosas: sobre agricultura, comercio, industria, economia, chyimica, botanica, historia natural, &c (1778-1791) translated from pioneering works published across Europe. Small 8vo (146 × 94 mm), pp. [xx], 345, [7], 6 folding engraved plates. Very minor marginal spotting to a few pages, folding plates slightly creased in places with slight soiling at extreme upper margin of one or two. Contemporary limp vellum, title in neat contemporary manuscript to spine. Early inscription "Esteban del Castillo" to front free endpaper and "Valladolid" to verso of final plate, later bookplate of Armando Cotarelo Valledor. A very nice copy indeed in contemporary state. Tagebuch einer zween monatlichen Reise: welche in der Absicht die Religion bey den Grenzeinvohnern von Pensilvanien zu befördern, und das Christenthum bey den Indianern

Frankfurt and Leipzig: J. G. Fleischers Buchhandlung, 1771. 8vo. (7 1/2 x 4 1/2 inches). 157pp. Uncut. Contemporary paper boards, early paper label on spine titled in manuscript. Rare edition of Beatty's journal of his travels among the Delaware Indians: "the first account of Indian towns in southeast Ohio" (Howes). The author was an Irish-born Presbyterian missionary who preached widely in both America and Europe. Beatty was sent to the American frontier in 1766 to report on the condition of the Indian tribes. "The tour of this zealous and intelligent observer to the Indian towns in Pennsylvania and Ohio, lying far beyond the frontiers, was made at a period of great interest in their history. The warriors of the Delaware and Shawnese had ravaged them with the tomahawk and firebrand for twenty years, and the Journal of the missionary is filled with notes of their awful massacres. It is very full and minute in its details of interviews with Indian chiefs, and the various phases of aboriginal life which attracted his attention" (Field). This German edition, i.e. the second edition overall following the 1768 first edition published in London, was unknown to Thomson or Field. We find no record of this edition appearing at auction in the last quarter century. Howes B28; Vail 608; Sabin 4150; Field 102 (London edition); Pilling, Proof Sheets 324 (London edition).

A Code of Laws for the Island of Jersey

1771. [Jersey]. [Channel Islands]. A Code of Laws for the Island of Jersey. [St. Helier, s.n.]: 1771. vi, 336, [53] pp. Fold-out table. Octavo (4-1/2" x 7"). Recent period-style calf, raised bands and lettering piece to spine, endpapers renewed, marbled edges. Early owner inscription to front free endpaper (R.G. Mourant/ May, 1943). Toning, light foxing in a few places, interior otherwise fresh. * Only edition. With index. Main text in French. Uncommon copy of the first printed code of laws established for the island of Jersey. The contents are digested by topic. Located between the northern coast of France and the southern coast of England, Jersey was originally part of Brittany. The island was eventually annexed to the Duchy of Normandy. When William the Conqueror conquered England in 1066, the Duchy and the kingdom of England were united. It was originally governed by customary law recorded in manuscript compilations. Under the direction of the Committee of Council for the Affairs of Jersey and Guernsey these laws were codified in 1771. OCLC locates 15 copies worldwide. A second edition of this code was issued in 1860. Sweet & Maxwell, A Legal Bibliography of the British Commonwealth 1:586 (5).

Two volumes, octavo: 1 leaf, a4, B-Z8, Aa-Kk8; Gg4 incorrectly signed G4), portrait front.; 1 leaf, B-Z8, Aa-Cc8, Dd2, a-b8, c6), Errata; 20.5 cm. Title continues: Relative to Painting, Sculpture And Architecture; And A History of His Own Time. Written By Himself In The Tuscan Language, And Translated From The Original By Thomas Nugent, L.L.D. F.S.A. In Two Volumes. First edition of this translation. First published in Italian in 1728. "Not less characteristic of its splendidly gifted and barbarically untameable author are the two autobiographical memoirs which he composed, beginning them in France in 1558,-- a production of the utmost energy, directness and racy animation, setting forth one of the most singular careers in all the annals of fine art. His amours and hatreds, his passions and delights, his love of the sumptuous and the exquisite in art, his self-applause and self-assertion, running now and again into extravagances which it is impossible to credit, and difficult to set down as strictly conscious falsehoods, make this one of the most singular and fascinating books in existence' -- EB 11th.
