Bahama Finch [Pl. 42, Vol. I]

London: printed for Benjamin White, 1771 [Third edition]. Hand-coloured copper engraving, on fine laid paper. Very good condition. Browning in extreme right margin well outside the platemark. 14 x 10 3/8 inches. 20 1/8 x 14 1/8 inches. A fine image from Catesby's 'The Natural History of Carolina, Florida, and the Bahama Islands', "the most famous colour-plate book of American plant and animal life...a fundamental and original work for the study of American species" (Hunt). A native of the Greater Antilles and Bahama Islands, the Bahama Finch or stripe-headed tanager is pictured in this stunning print among the leaves, flowers, and fruit of a broad leafed buiacium or boxwood tree, which is also indigenous to the Bahama Islands. This remarkable bird inhabits gardens and thick bushes and has a distinct appearance of a black head adorned with white stripes and a yellowish orange underside. Trained as a botanist, Catesby travelled to Virginia in 1712 and remained there for seven years, sending back to England collections of plants and seeds. With the encouragement of Sir Hans Sloane and others, Catesby returned to America in 1722 to seek materials for his 'Natural History'; he travelled extensively in Carolina, Georgia, Florida, and the Bahamas, sending back further specimens. His preface provides a lengthy account of the development of this work, including his decision to study with Joseph Goupy in order to learn to etch his plates himself to ensure accuracy and economy. A lovely and important work, embodying the most impressive record made during the colonial period of the natural history of an American colony. The most significant work of American natural history before Audubon's Birds of America. Cf. Anker 95; cf. Clark I:55; cf. Dunthorne 72; cf. Fine Bird Books (1990), p. 86; cf.       London: Printed for T. Becket and P.A. De Hondt, in the Strand, 1771.. [2],ii,130,[3]pp. Quarto. Modern half calf and marbled boards. Expert paper repair at bottom of titlepage, slight scattered foxing. Very good, with the suppressed dedication leaf. The first published account of Cook's first voyage, and thus the first appearance of any narrative of this epochal voyage. It was issued two years before the official account by Hawkesworth. As it was printed anonymously shortly after the return of the Endeavor and without authorization, the question of authorship has plagued bibliographers for some time. Sabin is adamant in declaring that the author was not Sir Joseph Banks, nor Capt. Cook, nor Hawkesworth. Beaglehole and other Cook authorities seem to agree that the author was American sailor James Magra. Others insist on attributing the work to Richard Orton and William Parry, or to Solander and Banks. "It is the first work chronologically in a bibliography of Cook..." - Hill. "The importance of this work cannot be overstated as it is not only the first published account of the voyage but it is also an interesting narrative of the expedition...[The first issue] is of the greatest rarity, and copies of the book containing the dedication are far more valuable than those without it" - Davidson. "Magra is the best voyage book" - Derek McDonnell. The dedication leaf to the Lords of the Admiralty which appears in this copy seems to indicate that the publication was officially sanctioned, which it was not. The second issue lacks the dedication leaf. An exceedingly important travel account, and extremely rare in its unsuppressed state. HILL 1066. SABIN 16242. HOLMES 3. BEDDIE 693.         A Journal of a Voyage round the World in His Majesty's Ship Endeavour

London,: Becket & De Hondt, 1771.. Quarto, with the 2 pp. dedication to Banks and Solander; an excellent copy in old half brown morocco, marbled sides and endpapers. First edition of the earliest published account of Cook's first voyage to the Pacific: the rare first issue, with the leaf of dedication to 'The Right Honourable Lords of the Admiralty, and to Mr. Banks and Dr. Solander' inserted by the publisher to add authenticity, although it didn't succeed in winning either gentleman's favour. This was the first of a series of so-called "surreptitious accounts" of Cook's various voyages to appear in print: the Admiralty found it practically impossible to enforce their ruling that no unofficial publications should pre-empt the official and lengthier accounts of the voyages, naturally much slower in the press. In this case, however, legal action was taken against the publisher for using an unauthorised dedication, forcing removal of the leaf during publication. 'It is accordingly of the greatest rarity, and copies of the book containing the dedication are far more valuable than those without it...' (Davidson).Published anonymously some two months after their return, and nearly two years before Hawkesworth's official account, the American sailor James Magra (now more commonly "Matra") is the most likely author (Beaglehole, Journals, I, pp. cclvi-cclxiv). If Magra was indeed the author, his illicit sale of his journal to the publishers might well have confirmed Cook's opinion of him: 'one of those gentlemen, frequently found on board Kings Ships, that can very well be spared, or to speake more planer good for nothing...'. He was a New Yorker and a loyalist.Whatever his skipper and the authorities may have thought of him, it was Magra who got the first description of the voyage into print - and incidentally the earliest printed account of the east coast of Australia, published even before acceptance of the name Botany Bay, here called Sting-ray Bay as Cook originally christened it.The publication of the book has a further claim on our attention for, as Alan Frost has argued, Magra used his experiences on the east coast of Australia to draft his 1783 proposal for a penal colony at Botany Bay (never shy in self-promotion, Magra even announced his hope of being made Governor). His plan, like Sir Joseph Banks' before and George Young's after him, was shelved, but does appear to have been in the back of the minds of the planners of the First Fleet. Magra was even called as an expert witness to the committee in charge of solving the question of transportation (Alan Frost, James Mario Matra, pp. 113-122).This copy has an interesting provenance. An early owner has left pencil and ink notes throughout, while the title-page has the stamp of the "Northern Protector of Aboriginals"; it is likely therefore that this copy belonged to the influential ethnographer and notable collector who held that office, Walter E. Roth. His administration of the post from 1898 to 1906 was marked for its sympathetic advocacy of Aboriginal rights. In this context the pencil notes which remark on various aspects of native behaviours, including New Zealand cannibalism, are especially interesting.Beddie, 693; Davidson, 'A Book Collector's Notes', pp. 53-4; Hill, 1066 (second issue); Hocken, p. 9; Holmes, 3; New Zealand National Bibliography, 3324; O'Reilly-Reitman, 362.

        Manuscript logbook of two voyages

At sea,: 1771 and, 1773.. Folio, 320 x 205 mm., laid paper with "Neptune" watermark surrounded by the legend "Pro Patria pro Pege", 46 pp. in total, neatly ruled and written throughout, log of "Marquis Rockingham" on first 28 pp., followed by 16 pp. 1773 log of "Bridge" William Rogerson master; excellent condition in the original marbled paper wrappers, a little worn along spine and fore-edge. Original manuscript logbook of two voyages between England and the West Indies in the 1770s. This is a fine example of an eighteenth-century log, rather fuller than many of the period. George Law, the West Indies merchant who kept the two records, was the owner of both ships, and he goes well beyond the normal bald record of wind and sea with some narrative passages, including an interesting report of his visit to Montserrat in 1773.1. Journal of a Passage from Jamaica in the ship Marquis Rockingham John Barrow Master, for Liverpool. 18 June to 3 September 1771. 28 pp. of closely written log.2. Journal of a Passage from Liverpool in the ship Bridge William Rogerson Master for Kingston Jamaica. 24 April to 13 June 1773. 16 pp. log with 3 pp. loosely inserted. The Marquis of Rockingham, a three-masted ship apparently involved in the sugar trade between the West Indies and Liverpool, was one of several ships of the period named for Rockingham. A leading figure in British politics at mid-century, he held a number of senior positions in the Government, and served two terms as Prime Minister. The 1780 issue of Lloyd's Register lists three ships of the same name, two of them involved in the West Indies trade. Both ships, the Marquis of Rockingham and the Bridge, were owned by the Jamaican resident George Law, a merchant, in the second half of the 18th century. Law's name appears at the foot of the first (title-) page. The inserted leaves in the second log contain a very interesting first-hand description of Plymouth Town in Montserrat (one of the Leeward Isles of the West Indies) made by Law during a visit to the port in June of 1773. He was entranced by "the most wholesome of the Caribee Islands" and thought that despite the lack of seven hills Plymouth should really be called "New Rome". The town was ultimately abandoned after its destruction by volcanic activities in the 1990s. Law happened to be there on Muster day which "brought together a large concourse of People from the parts adjacent who are of all other Men that I have seen in any part of the World the tallest and bear the best proportions. The Women also are remarkably handsome. They are at the same time rather impolite and very willing to show their Importance ". This is followed by some details off trade matters. The log is well and legibly written and in excellent original condition in a simple marbled paper binding.

Folio (28.9 cm, 11.4"). [1] f., 217, [1] p. Only edition. This official declaration of the Order of the Immaculate Conception of the convent Jesus Maria of Mexico encompasses a historical synopsis of the foundation and progress of that monastery and ten chapters on the => the religious life of the sisters — their vow of poverty in history and practice; admission into the monastery; and the necessary approval of the Royal Court to implement reforms, according to the rules set forth by Frai Payo Enriquez de Rivera, O.S.A. (1622–84, appointed Archbishop of Mexico in 1668). The document is addressed to the fourth provincial council, called by Archbishop Lorenzana, and is a plea on behalf of the nuns to not change how things are done and administered in the nunnery, to not introduce innovations. Guatemalan by birth, Guevara (d. 1804) studied civil and canonical jurisprudence at the Tridentine Seminary in Mexico, where he graduated from the university and became a lawyer at the royal court. One of the => leading lawyers in Mexico, he ascended quickly to high office, and was appointed governor in absence of the viceroy four times; according to Beristain, he was called the "American Ulpian" (after the Roman jurist) by at least one contemporary. Palau 129542; Medina, Mexico, 5451; Beristain, II, p. 61. Recent marbled paper over boards, title and author gilt on green leather spine label, new endpapers. Short, shallow instance of insect gnawing at fore-edge of first ten leaves and very limited, minor worming throughout along with mild to moderate mostly marginal speckles of foxing; light waterstaining at fore-edge of some pages and occasional inkstains or smudges; one corner of textblock bumped or "creased across" (with no tearing) and another corner just bumped. A copy not "fine" but definitely worth having.

Parma: Stamperia Stessa, 1771. Octavo. (iv), (58)pp. First edition. This is the first type specimen book issued by Bodoni. It contains an eleven-page introduction, 409 ornaments, and a scale of capitals, which, according to Brooks was "del Fournier che stava imitando." Several typefaces are included, from simple to rococo. This example of Bodoni's typographic work is transitional, drawing on elements of Fournier's type while hinting at his work to come. Each page of text is delicately framed with borders composed of Bodoni's ornaments. At the time that this book was published, Bodoni was the director of the Stamperia Reale, the Duke of Parma's press, and had just set up his own type foundry. This rare and charming work is bound in nineteenth century quarter calf and mottled boards, spine gilt in five compartments. There is just a bit of rubbing along outer hinge, else fine in felt-lined quarter morocco folding case.

Figures of the most beautiful, useful, and uncommon Plants described in the Gardeners Dictionary ... With the characters of their flowers and seed-vessels, drawn when they were in their greatest perfection. To which are added, their descriptions, and an account of the classes to which they belong, according to Ray's, Tournefort's, and Linnaeus's method of classing them.

London, printed for the author, 1771. 2 volumes. Folio (425 x 265mm). pp. vi, 1-100; (2), 101-200, (4), with 300 (2 folded) handcoloured engraved plates. Contemporary full calf, gilt ornamented spines (with some skilful repair), sides with gilt borders. A reissue of the first 1760 edition. Philip Miller, called by Linnaeus 'the greatest gardener of his time', was director of the Chelsea Gardens. The Chelsea gardens were for many decades the great centre of plant introduction and distribution in the British Isles, especially during Miller's long reign (1722-1770). The beautiful plates of this splendid and monumental work were all engraved after drawings by Ehret, Lancake, John Miller, and others. "In the execution of the work no expense has been spared to render it as perfect as possible. The drawings were taken from living plants, the engravings were most of them done under the author's inspection and the plates have been carefully coloured from the original drawings" (from the preface). According to W.T. Stearn Miller's 'Gardeners Dictionary' is the most important horticultural work of the eighteenth century. "Miller stressed the importance of accuracy in illustration; each plant had to be drawn from nature at its best stage of flowering, with the fruit and seeds to be added later on ripening... Miller provided a wealth of elegant ornamental plants in the 'Figures' for those appreciating beauty in botany and included many others on account of their usefulness or rarity. They remain botanically important because some were cited by Linnaeus and other botanists and because they graphically record plants in cultivation at that time" (Hazel le Rougetel, The Chelsea Gardener Philip Miller 1691-1771 pp. 110 & 114). Richard Pulteny, the British naturalist and historian of science wrote the following: "... England had not before produced any work, except the 'Hortus Elthamensis' or Catesby's 'Carolina', so superb and extensive...". Great Flower Books 68; Nissen BBI, 1378; Henrey 1098.

Chronicon de Gestis Principum Vicecomitum ab anno MDDL usque ad Annum MCCCLXX. Accedit Opusculum ejusdem Authoris De Bello Canepiciano. Quae omnia ex Manuscripto Codice Bibliothecae Ambrosianae ediderat Ludovicus Antonius Muratorius.

Mediolani, apud Federicum Agnellum, 1771. 1771 In-4° (235x185mm), pp. (2), LX, 393, (1) di errata, legatura coeva m. pelle con filetti in oro e titolo in oro su tassello verde. 2 testatine, 2 capilettera e 3 finaletti. Manno, IV, 14714. Cat. Hoepli, 497. Predari, 119. Cocconato, Piemontesi illustri, IV, 223. Brunet, Table, 25377.

The Vicar of Bray : A Tale.

London, printed for R. Baldwin 1771.. First Edition, 2 Vols, tall 12mo [binding c.17.5 x 11 cms], very smartly and handsomely bound in modern period-style polished tan calf, the spines ruled and numbered in gilt, and with red morocco labels. First and last leaf in both vols a little browned around the margin from contact with the turn-ins of the original binding, Vol 1 with tiny piece nipped from top corner of first two leaves, occasional light spotting of text. Overall an exceptional copy, very bright and attractive. <> Extremely rare 18th century Libertine novel based on the life and times of the legendary Vicar of Bray, who supposedly contorted his religious affiliations to suit the changing times - from a supporter of Divine Right under Charles II, a papist under James II, moderate under William, tory under Anne, whig under George and lusty protestant under succeeding Hanovers. The final leaf of Vol 2 prints the text of the famous satirical Ballad of the Vicar of Bray<> The novel presents the Vicar as an anti-hero, ultimately disgraced, who, together with his aristocratic friends and patrons, not only tacks and gybes to the political weather, but also cuts a despicable swathe through the innocent women of town and country. The Vicar, who had 'an unconquerable aversion to the clerical character', is 'deep read in the mystery of politics' and 'does not scruple to become all things to all men'. Worse, he 'never saw a woman without forming designs upon her, nor never succeeded in his attempts without abandoning her to the complicated miseries of distress, poverty, guilt and disgrace'. <> Top corner of both title-pages neatly signed Horace O. Bayfield, LRCPE, Surgeon. Bayfield 1843 - 1917 was a Licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians, Edinburgh. He was born in Charlotte, Canada, the son of the distinguished British surveyor of the Canadian coast Admiral Henry Wolsey Bayfield. <> This novel is very rare : only two copies of this two-volume First Edition are held in British Libraries : and only three copies of the one-volume Irish Edition of 1771. A one-volume New Edition was issued in 1779, of which only one copy is held. <> The legendary story of The Vicar of Bray was the basis for an 1882 comic opera, and for a 1937 film starring Stanley Holloway.

The book was reprinted the next year so carelessly that the page-numbers in the Contents are those required for the first edition, all astray for the second. The book is a pretty comprehensive account of high and especially low life in London: "bloods, bucks, choice spirits, and fellows of high fun; motherly matrons, and their obliging daughters; jilts, mock milliners, pimps, panders, jugglers, parasites, mock patriots; shallow politicians, ministerial understrappers; French hair-dressers, parish beadles, reforming constables, decrepit watchmen, &c. &c. &c."

Frankfurt and Leipzig: J. G. Fleischers Buchhandlung, 1771. 8vo. (7 1/2 x 4 1/2 inches). 157pp. Uncut. Contemporary paper boards, early paper label on spine titled in manuscript. Rare edition of Beatty's journal of his travels among the Delaware Indians: "the first account of Indian towns in southeast Ohio" (Howes). The author was an Irish-born Presbyterian missionary who preached widely in both America and Europe. Beatty was sent to the American frontier in 1766 to report on the condition of the Indian tribes. "The tour of this zealous and intelligent observer to the Indian towns in Pennsylvania and Ohio, lying far beyond the frontiers, was made at a period of great interest in their history. The warriors of the Delaware and Shawnese had ravaged them with the tomahawk and firebrand for twenty years, and the Journal of the missionary is filled with notes of their awful massacres. It is very full and minute in its details of interviews with Indian chiefs, and the various phases of aboriginal life which attracted his attention" (Field). This German edition, i.e. the second edition overall following the 1768 first edition published in London, was unknown to Thomson or Field. We find no record of this edition appearing at auction in the last quarter century. Howes B28; Vail 608; Sabin 4150; Field 102 (London edition); Pilling, Proof Sheets 324 (London edition).

The History of the Reign of Charles the Fifth, Emperor of Germany, and all the Kingdoms and States in Europe, during his Age

Printed for the Subscribers Robert Bell America (Philadelphia): Printed for the Subscribers (Robert Bell), 1770; i.e., 1770-1771. First American edition. Hardcover. Near fine. Yes. First edition printed in America. Three volumes. 8vo. viii,(ii),360;(xvi),374;(xlii),351,(lvii)pp., but with several errors in pagination as noted by Evans. Contemporary full sheep; spines with simple gilt rules and volume number sin gilt; red leather lettering labels, gilt. A few notes by a former owner, including the beginning of his name on the title page of Volume 2 (Isaac Lew...) possibly a relative of Nathaniel Lewis and Mordecai Lewis who are listed on the List of Subscribers. This publication marks the substantial beginning of the introduction of European literature into America. Bell has published with it an address upon international copyright, the first on the subject. The long list of subscribers is a veritable who's who of early American history: John Adams, Jacob Giles, John Hancock (2 sets), Cecil Rodney, and so on: ''whose names posterity may respect because by these seasonable encouragements this American edition hath been accomplished at a price so moderate that the man of the woods as well as the man of the court may now solace himself with substantial delight." A two volume set was also printed that year. Evans, 11837; Sabin, 72003. Bell also brought out an edition of Blackstone in 1771. An exceedingly rare book.; if the list of subscribers is a guide, only a few hundred sets were issued. The owner's name was clipped in binding, and so will likely remain just out of reach.
