Chr. Fr. Himburg, Berlin 1771 - 4to. [10], 243, [1], 240 pp. With 8 engraved vignettes by J.W. Meil. Bound in contemporary German paste-paper covered boards. Preserved in a brown cloth protective case (Cloverleaf Studio) First and Only Edition of this extremely early and important study of ANATOMICAL ILLUSTRATIONS, perhaps the first scholarly work on the subject, containing also a CATALOGUE OF PORTRAITS OF PHYSICIANS. Choulant and Frank ("History and Bibliography of Anatomic Illustration") praise the work: "Contains very valuable reports on artistic anatomy and the history of anatomic illustrations. Very accurate and conscientious research work is characteristic of this book, as of all Moehsen's works. The volume is most useful for its bibliographic references to physicians portraits. There is also an excellent essay on the relationship of medicine to artistic anatomy - possible the best written to date." (p. 351). The first part of the work contains a long theoretical essay on the relationship between medicine and art; the history of anatomic illustration; and the use of different artistic media, including woodcuts and metal engraving; the second part contains a "List of portraits of famous physicians, in copperplate as well as woodcuts and drawings," "Works in which different portraits of famous doctors have notes that are useful for the history of the arts and artists," "Alphabetical list of those artists and illustrators, as well as copper engravers" and more. Moehsen (1722-1795) was Frederick the Great's personal physicians and one of the most learned and enlightened men of his time, the author of a number of notable works on the history of medicine, for which see: "Johann Moehsen, Kurt Sprengel, and the Problem of Origins in Collective Memory" by Hans-Uwe Lammel (in: Locating Medical History: The Stories and Their Meanings, edited by Frank Huisman & John Harley Warner, JHU Press, 2006). Two issues of the work both appeared in 1771 (priority indeterminate), distinguished only by the publisher's name on the imprint. The present copy belongs to the issue with "Himburg" as the publisher; other copies bear the name of "Birnstiel." This copy does not contain the half-title that was apparently tipped-in to some copies immediately before Part 2 (the text reads "II. Catalogus iconum potissime clarissimorum medicorum, et oerum, qui artem medicam, excolverunt"). The physical collation of this copy is complete (there are no odd leaves or missing leaves in the gathering) and collates as per other recorded copies. Early ownership inscriptions and private collection stamp on front end-papers. § Garrison-Morton 6604.90; Blake p. 307; Petzholdt p. 273 "in sorgfältiger und fur ihre Zeit musterhafter Redaktion"; Dorn 239-244 (Birnstiel issue); Rumann 757. SELECTED CONTENTS: PART ONE: "Usefulness of this work for art lovers;" "Improvements and additions from this directory, also Gersaint's Catalogue of the works of Rembrandt, as well as on the history of the arts in general;" "Of effigies of great artists, as well as very famous copper engravers;" "Of the difference of those impressions, and how to know from where a plate was taken;" "Of the rarity of the portraits in this collection;" "Of the value of this inventory in the biography, scholarly arts, and news of its establishment;" "Of Anatomy;" "Of Michelangelo Buonarotti and Raphael;" "Of the merits of Vesalius and Titian relating to anatomy, along with a detailed description of the works of Vesalius;" "Of the anatomical works of the great Bidloo, which Gerhard Lairesse has manufactured;" "Of Bidloo's and Lairesse's copperplates;" "Of the large anatomical works by Mr. Albinus, with Wandelaar's drawings and copper engravings;" "Of Gautier [d'Agoty]'s anatomical characters with color prints;" "Some messages from the first use of color-printed woodcuts for anatomical characters; unequal by Le Blond, predecessor of the Gautier [d'Agoty family];" "Of Ladmiral's anatomical characters in a very clean color prints;" "The list o [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

[Boston. 1771].. [24]pp., including three metal-cut engravings, possibly by Revere. 12mo. Dbd. Lightly foxed. Very good. A variation of the original Russell edition (which had two engravings by Revere), this is one of several editions published in New England, though this one lacks any imprint information. NAIP notes that this edition, with its advertisement on the last page for Daniel Jones, is almost certainly the edition printed and advertised by Edes & Gill. The nature of the engravings in this almanac becomes more puzzling due to a charge in Paul Revere's Day Book which reads, "Messrs Edes & Gill Dr / To Engraving 3 plates for Ames Almanack / 2-14-0," on December 21, just five days after his entry for two engravings for Russell's Ames almanac. It is unclear, then, whether this almanac should be considered a pirated edition with imitations of Revere's engravings, or whether there is sufficient evidence to believe that these engravings are genuine Revere engravings, albeit copies of his original engravings. The engraving on the titlepage is of a dwarf, Miss Emma Leach, who had recently traveled to Boston. Of the two engravings in the interior, the first depicts political writer Jonathan Dickinson, under his pseudonym of "The Patriotic American Farmer." The second shows Mrs. Catherine Macaulay, a famous British intellectual and author, and correspondent of many of the leading Boston patriots. Macaulay's book on English liberties was an important source for Otis, Adams, Dickinson, and other American leaders. This almanac is also notable for including an essay on a beekeeping technique used in Greece. Nathaniel Ames Jr. continued writing this almanac series after his father died in 1764 and until the beginning of the Revolutionary War. He was a successful doctor, ardent Anti-Federalist, and local politician. DRAKE 3205. EVANS 11961. NAIP w022505. BRIGHAM, PAUL REVERE'S ENGRAVINGS, pp.135-36.

INED 3938.       London. 1771. - Two volumes. viii,407; [4],432pp. Half titles in each volume. Contemporary calf, spines gilt. Extremities rubbed. Contemporary bookplate on front pastedowns, modern bookplate on rear pastedowns. Some light foxing and toning. Very good plus. Bossu went to Louisiana in 1750 as a captain of the Marines. This narrative is comprised of a series of twenty-one letters to the Marquis de L'Estrade describing Bossu's life and travels in the vast Louisiana country from 1751 to 1762. Bossu's ventures ranged from Fort Chartres, in present-day Illinois, to Mobile, and along the Mississippi. His visit to New Orleans took place only thirty years after its founding, and he was able to gather considerable information from the memories of locals. "Bossu wrote well and his letters not only give an interesting picture of life in the Mississippi Valley and the Mobile Country to the east at the beginning of the second half of the eighteenth century, but incorporated also are many sketches of events in preceding years" - Streeter. This is the first English edition, to which Howes assigns the same "b" rating as the suppressed first edition of 1768. "The first volume is almost entirely filled with historical and personal sketches of the Southern Indian Tribes of the present United States" - Field. Almost all of the second volume of this edition is given over to the catalogue of plants, making it an important piece of American natural history. The catalogue, which does not appear in the first edition, was compiled by Johann Reinhold Forster, the well known German explorer and botanist, based on specimens of North American plants he saw in England, and on his translation of the work of Swedish botanist Pehr Lofling describing the plants he collected in northern South America in 1754-56.         Flying Squirrel [Glaucomys volans]

London: printed for Benjamin White, 1771. A fine image from Catesby's 'The Natural History of Carolina, Florida, and the Bahama Islands', "the most famous colour-plate book of American plant and animal life...a fundamental and original work for the study of American species" (Hunt) The southern flying squirrel can commonly be found in the deciduous forests of eastern North America and occasionally in Mexico and parts of South America. They are small, agile animals that have a unique patagium or gliding membrane that connects the front and hind legs and enables them to glide long distances. Their large eyes, which are adapted for their nocturnal behavior, also distinguish them from the regular squirrel. Trained as a botanist, Catesby travelled to Virginia in 1712 and remained there for seven years, sending back to England collections of plants and seeds. With the encouragement of Sir Hans Sloane and others, Catesby returned to America in 1722 to seek materials for his 'Natural History'; he travelled extensively in Carolina, Georgia, Florida, and the Bahamas, sending back further specimens. His preface provides a lengthy account of the development of this work, including his decision to study with Joseph Goupy in order to learn to etch his plates himself to ensure accuracy and economy. A lovely and important work, embodying the most impressive record made during the colonial period of the natural history of an American colony. The most significant work of American natural history before Audubon's Birds of America . Cf. Anker 95; cf. Clark I:55; cf. Dunthorne 72; cf. Fine Bird Books (1990), p. 86; cf.         The Vicar of Bray : A Tale.

London, printed for R. Baldwin 1771. - First Edition, 2 Vols, tall 12mo [binding c.17.5 x 11 cms], very smartly and handsomely bound in modern period-style polished tan calf, the spines ruled and numbered in gilt, and with red morocco labels. First and last leaf in both vols a little browned around the margin from contact with the turn-ins of the original binding, Vol 1 with tiny piece nipped from top corner of first two leaves, occasional light spotting of text. Overall an exceptional copy, very bright and attractive. ** Extremely rare 18th century Libertine novel based on the life and times of the legendary Vicar of Bray, who supposedly contorted his religious affiliations to suit the changing times - from a supporter of Divine Right under Charles II, a papist under James II, moderate under William, tory under Anne, whig under George and lusty protestant under succeeding Hanovers. The final leaf of Vol 2 prints the text of the famous satirical Ballad of the Vicar of Bray. ** The novel presents the Vicar as an anti-hero, ultimately disgraced, who, together with his aristocratic friends and patrons, not only tacks and gybes to the political weather, but also cuts a despicable swathe through the innocent women of town and country. The Vicar, who had 'an unconquerable aversion to the clerical character', is 'deep read in the mystery of politics' and 'does not scruple to become all things to all men'. Worse, he 'never saw a woman without forming designs upon her, nor never succeeded in his attempts without abandoning her to the complicated miseries of distress, poverty, guilt and disgrace'. ** Top corner of both title-pages neatly signed Horace O. Bayfield, LRCPE, Surgeon. Bayfield 1843 - 1917 was a Licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians, Edinburgh. He was born in Charlotte, Canada, the son of the distinguished British surveyor of the Canadian coast Admiral Henry Wolsey Bayfield. ** This novel is very rare : only two copies of this two-volume First Edition are held in British Libraries : and only three copies of the one-volume Irish Edition of 1771. A one-volume New Edition was issued in 1779, of which only one copy is held. ** The legendary story of The Vicar of Bray was the basis for an 1882 comic opera, and for a 1937 film starring Stanley Holloway. **** To confirm availability before ordering, please click the link Ask Bookseller A Question.         Description d'un nouveau pont de pierre, construit sur la riviere d'Allier a Moulins.

Lottin, Paris 1771 - Folio [48 x 34 cm], (1) f., 47 pp. with 5 full-page and 11 folding copper engravings illustrating the topography, the different stages of the construction project, and the engineering machinery used. Bound in contemporary cartonnage, spine reinforced with old vellum. The usual uniform toning and very occasional light marginal foxing; worming in gutter margin of p. 13-14, not affecting printed surface. Very good, with sharp impressions of the plates, which are all in excellent condition. First and only edition of a landmark book on bridge engineering on rivers, important not only for its bold solution for a complex site but also for many novel machines used in the course of construction. ¿Since its appearance the present work has been recognized for its great utility to engineers charged with the construction of other similar bridges¿ (Roberts & Trent). The numerous full-page and folding plates illustrate the bridge at various stages of completion, as well as the machinery used¿dredges, pile drivers, hoists and winches, etc. A very handsome volume on the subject, with monumental and superb folding illustrations (including one 126 cm long) documenting step-by-step the works in progress. In the fifty years prior to publication, three bridges in stone¿one built by the famous Hardouin Mansard-- and a fourth constructed of wood had collapsed at Moulins, on the river Allier in France. Régemortes attributed their collapse to insufficient foundational support in the river¿s sandy bed, as the latter was subject to gradual erosion. By contrast, Régemortes placed his foundations on the river¿s banks, and gained additional structural support from a small island in the center, along with a complex system of embankments, levees and a canal. The construction of the Moulins bridge, which took 10 years, was a great success: the work gained instant recognition and became a classic in the field of civil engineering. * Roberts & Trent, Bibliotheca Mechanica, p. 274; NBG XLI. 837. La primera edición holandesa, que contiene el mismo número de láminas, vio la luz en 1758 y se reimprimió posteriormente en 1763 y 1790.       Amsterdam, Arckstée & Merkus, 1771 - 2 works in 1 vol., octavo (202 × 128 mm). Contemporary sprinkled calf, raised bands, spine gilt in compartments with panels of plain and broken lines, enclosing a floral device with bird on branch, double foliate roll at the tail, red morocco lettering piece, gilt edge-rolls, edges sprinkled in red. A superb copy, the spine just a touch sunned and slightly dry, very minor shelf-wear, internally beautifully fresh, the plates still resistant to unfolding. 3 folding engraved maps and plans to the first, 1 folding diagrammatic engraved plate to the second. First Edition. Uncommon: of the first named, COPAC has just Oxford and BL, OCLC has nine locations, and also a number of manuscript copies, including one made as late as 1812 held by Princeton. Of the second, COPAC lists just the BL, and OCLC locates six, and one copy bound together as here held by Princeton. Du Puget exercised considerable influence on Guibert who in turn was the basis for many of du Teil's formulations for the development of the rôle of field artillery which saw practical implementation under Napoleon. The Macclesfield copy, with Shirburn Castle bookplate to the front free endpaper and embossed stamp through the first few leaves, and the bookplate of Lieutenant-General George Lane Parker, younger son of the second earl, to the front pastedown. Parker served for more than twenty years in the 1st Foot Guards. In 1773 at rank of major-general he was appointed colonel of the 20th Foot and saw service in the War of Independence. One of his contributions to the Shirburn castle library was a remarkable collection of books detailing the professional interests of a soldier in the latter part of the 18th century.         Die Inoculation der Liebe. Ein Erzählung.

Leipzig, Weidmanns Erben und Reich 1771. - 8vo. (1) leaf, 70 pp. Frontispiece, title-vignette and cul-de lampe all engraved by Geyser after Oeser. Later boards (slightly rubbed), gilt spine label. First edition. The illustrations in this copy would appear to be in an early state, and not recorded by some authorities (cf. Deusch in: Philobiblon 10 (1966) H. 1. p. 7 and figs. 12 - 14 or Oehler in: Jahrbuch d. Sammlung Kippenberg 5 (1925). p. 88.). For example, the frontispiece lacks the foliage arrangement, and the loving couple are in mirror image, the face of the snake charmer on the title page is less heavily accentuated and the branches of the tree somewhat simpler, and in the final vignette parts of the scenery disappear into the tree foliage. Apparently it would seem that this copy was a proof copy, whose unsatisfactory illustrations led to corrections. Slightly browned throughout (frontispiece and title more intensively), first and last leaved browned at inner margins. Book-block slightly broken, last leaves with worm-track to inner margins. A good copy with very rare engravings. Goed. IV 1, 582, 3; Borst 231 (mentioning zwo different title vignettes); Brieger 1315; Rümann 1148; Lanck./Oehler II, S. 195; Wilp./G. 2; Hayn-G.         Il Libro del Cortegiano del conte Baldassar Castiglione

Vendramini Mosca, Vicenza 1771 - 4 books in 2 volumes: [8]+xvi+255 pages with frontispiece; 205 pages with index and errata. Octavo (8" x 5 3/4) bound in stiff wrappers with lables to spines and deckle edges. This edition not in Bibliotheca Van der Linde-Niemeijeriana; however, there are a number of listings for this title in the bibliography (4315 through 4330), listing 16 editions of various dates and publishers. First published in 1528. Baldassare Castiglione, count of Novilara was an Italian courtier, diplomat, soldier and a prominent Renaissance author. He was born into an illustrious Lombard family at Casatico, near Mantua. In 1494, at the age of sixteen, Castiglione began his humanist studies in Milan, which would eventually form his future writings. However, in 1499, after the death of his father, Castiglione left his studies and Milan to succeed his father as the head of their noble family. Soon his duties seem to have included representative offices for the Gonzaga court. For the Gonzaga he traveled quite often; during one of his missions to Rome, he met Guidobaldo da Montefeltro, duke of Urbino. Urbino was at that time the most refined and elegant among Italian courts, a meeting point of culture ably directed and managed by duchess Elisabetta Gonzaga and her sister-in-law Maria Emilia Pia. The most constant guests included: Pietro Bembo, Giuliano de' Medici, Cardinal Bibbiena, Ottaviano and Federigo Fregoso, and Cesare Gonzaga, a cousin of both Castiglione and the duke. The hosts and guests organized intellectual competitions which resulted in an interesting, stimulating cultural life producing brilliant literary activity. Castiglione wrote about his works and of those of other guests in letters to other princes, maintaining an activity very near to diplomacy, though in a literary form. In 1516, Castiglione was back in Mantua, where he married Ippolita Torelli, descendant of another ancient noble family; two passionate letters he wrote to her, expressing deep sentiment, have survived, but she unfortunately died only four years later. At that time Castiglione was in Rome again as an ambassador, this time for the Duke of Mantua. In 1521 Pope Leo X conceded to him the tonsura (first sacerdotal ceremony), and thereupon began Castiglione's second, ecclesiastical career. In 1528, the year before his death, the book by which he is most famous, The Book of the Courtier (Il Libro del Cortegiano), was published in Venice by the Aldine Press run by Andrea d'Asolo, father-in-law of Aldus Manutius. The book is based on a nostalgic recreation of Castiglione's experience at the court of Duke Guidobaldo da Montefeltro of Urbino at the turn of the sixteenth century. It describes the ideal court and courtier, going into great detail about the philosophical and cultured and lively conversations that occurred at Urbino, presided over by Elisabetta Gonzaga. Castiglione himself does not contribute to the discussion, the book is his tribute to his friendship with the participants of the discussion, all of whom went on to have important positions. The Book of the Courtier caught the "spirit of the times" and was soon translated into Spanish, German, French, and English. One hundred and eight editions were published between 1528 and 1616 alone. (Pietro Aretino's La cortigiana is a parody of this famous work.) Castiglione's depiction of how the ideal gentleman should be educated and behave remained, for better or for worse, the touchstone for all the upper classes of Europe for next five centuries. The work on chess is in the second book of this work. Condition: Old stamps to title of volume two and first un-numbered page of volume one, Spine ends chipped with loss to heal, corners bumped, wrappers rubbed else a good copy of scarce title.
