HOLBACH, Paul Henri Thiry, Baron d'
Amsterdam: Marc-Michel Rey. Holbach Systeme De La Nature, 1st Ed., 1770, Philosophy, PMM The So Called "Bible of Materialism" HOLBACH, Paul Henri Thiry, Baron d'. [MIRABAUD, Jean-Babtiste, pseud.]. Amsterdam: Marc-Michel Rey , 1770. First edition. Two volumes, octavo. [12], 370; [4], 412 pp. Contemporary full marbled calf, elaborately tooled in gilt compartments with a floral motif with red morocco labels lettered in gilt on spines with raised bands. Volume 1 chipped on headcap, tips bumped and bookplates on pastedowns of both volumes. Volume 1 has slight water staining to margin at first few pages and volume 2 has a tiny wormhole to first 10 pages. Otherwise, a handsome copy of the so-called 'Bible of Materialism'. Paul Heinrich Dietrich, Baron d'Holbach (1723-1789) first became known as a scientist, contributing some four hundred articles to the Encyclopédie of his friend and colleague Denis Diderot. Holbach later turned from science to more dangerous topics, writing and having published abroad, a number of books attacking religion in all aspects, which flooded illegally into France. Unable to publish safely under his own name, he had the ingenious idea of using the names of recently dead French authors. Thus, in 1770, his most famous book, "The System of Nature," appeared under the name of Jean-Baptiste Mirabaud. "In the Système Holbach rejected the Cartesian mind-body dualism and attemped to explain all phenomena, physical and mental, in terms of matter in motion. He derived the moral … [Click Below for Full Description]

Very good, no dj (as issued). Please see description and images for more comprehensive details. The Secrets of the Invisible World Laid Open (or) An Universal History of Apparitions Sacred and Profane Whether Angelical Diabolical or Departed Souls by Andrew Moreton (Daniel DeFoe) ©1770 D. Steel Presumed 2nd edition, 3rd impression. Full leather. Size: 6.5" tall x 4.25" wide x 1" deep 252 pages, with 6 original full copper-plate engravings, including frontispiece. Originally written under the pseudonym Andrew Moreton by the Dissenter Daniel DeFoe, just 2 years before his death (this edition 39 yrs after his death). In my research for this gem, I've determined this to most likely be a 2nd edition, 3rd printing/impression of this scarce pre-Revolution tome on the Supernatural. An Essay on the History and Reality Of Apparitions, etc. first published in 1727. Reissued 1728 (dated 1729) as The Secrets of the Invisible World Disclos'd: or An Universal History of Apparitions Sacred and Prophane. By Andrew Moreton, Esq. It is said that Daniel Defoe was a man who invented both modern journalism and the modern novel in his furious forty year career, having written over 500 books & pamphlets (including Robinson Crusoe). Description: Hand-trimmed pages, with a slice to pg 79/80 showing minor loss of text. Re-backed spine with newer leather and gilt label, corners re-inforced under original leather. Reinforcement as well done long ago. This is a solid very good copy, especially considering it's over 230 years old. HOLBACH, Baron Paul Henry Dietrich von]
London [but Amsterdam: M. M. Rey], 1770. 2 volumes, octavo (198 x 123 mm). Contemporary mottled calf, spines gilt to compartments with twin red morocco labels, endpapers blocked with coloured floral decoration, red edges. Very light wear around extremities, a couple of minute instances of insect damage to calf, worming to last few leaves of vol. II not affecting text. A lovely copy in an attractive, unrestored contemporary binding. With half-title and errata in vol. I as called for. First edition, first issue (with the errata leaves and textual errors; the errata were corrected and the leaves removed for the second issue), of Holbach's most famous work, "the bible of materialism" (PMM). Holbach, a man of vast humanistic and philosophical knowledge, was also familiar with various branches of science and technology. One of the most relevant contributors to Diderot's Encyclopédie, he wrote no less than 1100 articles for the "enlightened project", mostly anonymously, covering metallurgy and mineralogy, chemistry and geology. Published under a pseudonym ("M. Mirabaud"), this book immediately attracted the most violent hostility from the establishment, and was banned by the French parliament shortly after publication. Such vehement opposition of course ensured its broad fame and its various reprints. Voltaire himself was ill at ease with Holbach's daring materialism and atheism, so much so that he decided to write a reply in defence of religion. This "philippique against God", as he calls it, was going far beyond the questioning of the Church's worldly power. No room for any supe … [Click Below for Full Description]
