RISM BVI p. 532 (incorrectly dating this edition at ca. 1785 and locating only one copy in the U.S.).Malpied's treatise is something of a synthesis of Feuillet's and Rameau's groundbreaking methods of dance notation. It is considered to be the first treatise to deal with the five arm positions. In addition, some of the detailed explanations indicate a change in performance practice of specific dance steps, particularly those of the minuet. With the standardization of the five arm positions to match the five foot positions developed earlier, "the neoclassical demand to harmonise content and appearance had taken hold of the entire body." Weickmann: Choreography and narrative: the ballet d'action of the eighteenth century."... a marked advance on the work of Feuillet and Rameau in the simplification of the recording of dance steps." Fletcher. "A careful resumé of the basic elements of the Feuillet method... concluding with notes and stenochoreographic plates on the Menuet and Contredanse. Considerable attention is given to arm positions, and on page 83 are symbols for one couple of the arm enlacements in l'Allemande, which dance was in considerable favour at this time as attested by the publications of Dubois and Guillaume at this period, on the subject." Niles & Leslie. "The text contains a details description … [Click Below for Full Description]

PAUL REVERE
Boston, MA, 1770. Revere's print quickly became one of the most successful examples of political propaganda of all time. The depiction of the event, and a poem printed below, vilify the British Army and list the first casualties of the American Revolution: "Unhappy Boston! see thy Sons deplore, Thy hallow'd Walks besmear'd with guiltless Gore...The unhappy Sufferers were Mess[ieur]s Saml Gray, Saml Maverick, Jams Caldwell, Crispus Attucks & Pat[ric]K Carr Killed. Six wounded; two of them (Christr Monk & John Clark) Mortally..." PAUL REVERE
Boston, MA. Engraving. "The Bloody Massacre perpetrated in King-Street Boston on March 5th 1770 by a party of the 29th Reg." Printed by Edes & Gill, Boston, Mass., 1770. First edition, second state (clock showing 10:20), original hand coloring. 1 p., LVG watermark, 9⅝ x 12 in. Revere's print quickly became one of the most successful examples of political propaganda of all time. The depiction of the event, and a poem printed below, vilify the British Army and list the first casualties of the American Revolution: "Unhappy Boston! see thy Sons deplore, Thy hallow'd Walks besmear'd with guiltless Gore. The unhappy Sufferers were Mess[ieur]s Saml Gray, Saml Maverick, Jams Caldwell, Crispus Attucks & Pat[ric]K Carr Killed. Six wounded; two of them (Christr Monk & John Clark) Mortally." Rushed into print less than a month after the event, Revere's print helped unite the colonists and, in American minds, cast the British as aggressive oppressors- making rebellion easier to justify. By the spring of 1770, New England's metropolis had been smoldering with discontent. In 1765, Parliament had imposed the Stamp Act. Though repealed, it was soon replaced by Townshend's "Intolerable Acts," including new taxes. Then, the Crown's commissioners of customs, fearing (with good reason) for their safety, had requested military support. In 1768, several infantry regiments, accompanied by a small artillery train, were tasked with keeping order in the city. Nearly 2,000 soldiers lived amongst Boston's population of just 15,000. The quartering of the troops in private homes was seen as an addi … [Click Below for Full Description]

Oxonii: E Typographeo Clarendoniano, 1770. iv, 7, [1], [4], 6, 12, 77, [1], 1084 engravings on 439 plates (9 folding). Hardback. 2 parts in one, folio (376x240mm), sympathetically rebound in 20th century brown half morocco, raised bands to spine, gt title. Some offsetting, occasional spotting or browning, 2 plates lightly shaved, one fore-margin with two short tears (not affecting engravings). Ink stamp of 'Royal Institution of Great Britain' to endpaper. Second complete edition, edited by William Huddesford. Martin Lister (1639-1712) was a physician to Queen Anne, and generally considered as the founder of conchology in England. The complete first edition of this work was issued between 1685 and 1692. This edition had 490 pages, with 1062 engraved copper plates, showing 2000 figures of molluscs. The illustrations were the work of his daughters Anna and Susanna. Lister encouraged their drawing abilities, and they would have used the shells in his collection, or those sent by friends such as Sir Hans Sloane, from which to make their drawings. They were also assisted with the etching or engraving of the plates. The book was initially published in four parts. In 1712 Lister bequeathed the original copper plates to the Ashmolean Museum, and in 1770, the curator of the Museum, William Huddesford, published this edition of the book. He reprinted the illustrations from the original plates, and included additional notes from Lister's manuscript.Nissen ZBI, 2529; Keynes, Dr Martin Lister, 49. Two hundred years later, here they are, preserved for us to appreciate. Printed in German, they are a "contemporary" glimpse into our Revolutionary War era. Amsterdam & Leipzig: 1770. Condition: Very good for age. 284 year old set in the original bindings. All covers firmly attached, some splitting between covers and spine, many spine labels missing, gilt coat of arms on covers are all still visible and only lightly worn. Set of 39 ancient books in very good condition. Bound in the original full leather, decorated by hand-tooled gilt. Spines with five raised bands and two leather spine labels. Covers have large coat of arms deeply embossed on front and rear. Books dated 1770-1778, and numbered 1-38 & 40, giving the impression the set is missing the 39th volume; however 37 has a half title stating it contains both 37 & 38 and the 38th volume is marked on the title page 39. Possibly the numbering on the spines is a bookbinding error. Overall the set is in very good condition. Leather has visible wear on most volumes, chipping, rubbed areas and some with splitting between spines and covers, but since the bindings were sewn, all covers remain firmly attached. Illustrated with many folding maps. Each book has at least 1, while others can have as many as 10. Track Page Views With Auctiva's FREE Counter. [Attributes: First Edition]

First edition. A delicious 18th century scandal, the 'illustrious personage' being Henry Frederick, Duke of Cumberland (1745-1790), a younger brother of King George III: and the 'noble lady' being Henrietta, Lady Grosvenor, (d. 1828). In early 1769 the pair had begun a sexual relationship. They were often seen in public together and attracted speculation and the fury of Lord Grosvenor. 'A little before 2 a.m. on 22 December 1769 Grosvenor's servants discovered Cumberland and Lady Grosvenor in bed together at the White Hart inn, St Albans. Grosvenor pursued the matter in the courts and on 5 July 1770 Cumberland was tried for criminal conversation with Lady Grosvenor. Despite the best efforts of his counsel, John Dunning, to show that the testimony of Grosvenor's agents was doubtful and supporting evidence circumstantial, the court found against Cumberland and he was ordered to pay damages of £10,000 to Grosvenor. This damaged the duke's already precarious financial position and he borrowed £12,000 from a grudging king. A rash of books and pamphlets was published to exploit the affair, including a collection of the couple's correspondence which exposed Cumberland's adolescent expressions of emotion and his uncertain grammar to ridicule.' [Matthew Kilburn in ODNB]. The present pamphlet comprises transcriptions of the text of 30 letters and 12 cards purporting to have b … [Click Below for Full Description]

Baretti Giuseppe
A Journey from London to Genoa through England, Portugal, Spain and France (Mario Fubini in D.B.I., VI, 1964). Raccolta de' viaggi più interessanti eseguiti nelle varie parti del mondo, tanto per terra quanto per mare, dopo quelli del celebre Cook. Piccioni, n. 20 e sgg. Rimaneggiando le sue Lettere familiari e aggiungendovene quasi altre … [Click Below for Full Description]
