Lowell was a prominent politician and judge, from Newbury, Massachusetts, with a large legal practice in Boston, specialising in criminal law and what has been described as a lucrative trade in privateering cases. He was a member of Congress, a founding member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (1780), a member of the American Philosophical Society, the Society for Propagating the Gospel among the Indians, the Massachusetts Charitable Society, and the Massachusetts Society for Promoting Agriculture, deputy grand master of the Freemasons' Grand Lodge of Massachusetts, a fellow of the Corporation of Harvard College, a founder of the Massachusetts Bank, and a director of the Boston branch of the Bank of the United States. "In politics, Lowell was associated with the Essex Junto, which long dominated Federalist politics in eastern Massachusetts. In 1789 Lowell became a judge in the newly created federal court for the district of Massachusetts. In 1801 with the passage of the Judiciary Act he became chief justice of the First Circuit, which included Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island, as one of the "midnight judges." Anonymus [Schier, Xystus].
Wien / Vienna, Kaliwoda, o.j. (ca. 1770). 8°. 34 Seiten. Interimsbroschur des 19.Jahrhunderts. Sehr guter Zustand. Maria Komnene or Comnena (Porphyrogenita) (1152-1182) was the eldest daughter of the Emperor Manuel I Komnenos by his first wife, Bertha of Sulzbach. She was known as the Porphyrogenneta or Porphyrogenita because she had been „born in the Purple Chamber", i.e. born in the Palace at Constantinople to the consort of a reigning Emperor. Maria was probably born in March 1152. In 1163 she was engaged to the future King Béla III of Hungary; Manuel, no longer expecting to father a legitimate son, was at that time ready to designate Béla (whom he had given the new court dignity of despotes and had renamed „Alexios") as his eventual successor. This engagement was broken off in 1169, soon after Manuel's son Alexios was born. Maria was then engaged to King William II of Sicily, but this engagement, too, was broken off by her father. Finally, in 1179, Maria was married to Renier of Montferrat, who was renamed „John" and given the title of Caesar. After the death of the Emperor Manuel in 1180, Maria and Renier became involved in intrigues against Maria's stepmother, the Empress Maria (Xene), who was ruling as regent for her young son, now Emperor Alexios II. A riot broke out against the empress, encouraged by Maria and Renier, but their attempt to seize power failed. Both died soon afterwards, apparently by poison, soon after the seizure of the regency by Andronikos Komnenos, a paternal first cousin of Manuel. S … [Click Below for Full Description]

GLUCK, Christoph Willibald.]
Vienna, Johann Thomas von Trattner, 1770. Tall folio, pp. [xii] (title, dedication, tables and argomento), 196; full score in letterpress; a few early corrections in red crayon; occasional slight browning and a few isolated spots, but a very good, crisp copy in contemporary vellum; slightly rubbed, a few stains on lower cover, small loss of vellum at fore-edge of upper cover.First edition of Gluck's Paride ed Elena, which tells the story of events between the judgment of Paris and the flight of Paris and Helen to Troy. It was premiered at the Burgtheater in Vienna on 3 November 1770.Paride ed Elena was the third of Gluck's Italian reformist operas, following Orfeo ed Euridice (1762) and Alceste (1767); the poet and diplomat Ranieri de' Calzabigi provided the subjects and librettos for all three operas. Opera had previously followed the stylised conventions of the Baroque opera seria, acting as a vehicle to show off the beauty of the human voice, but Gluck and Calzabigi introduced elements of human interest, passion, and dramatic intensity to the operatic stage for the first time. Their reforms were highly controversial and met with great opposition, particularly after Gluck moved to Paris in 1773.The edition is a monument of early Viennese music printing, with type-set music, a process which was technically far ahead of music engraving in Austria at the same date. Johann Thomas von Trattner (1717–1798) was the leading music publisher and retailer in Vienna between 1770 and 1790, who became a wealthy society figure and an intimate friend of Mozart. He is particularly remembe … [Click Below for Full Description]

HOLBACH, Baron d';
[Click Below for Full Description]

DAUMONT.
Paris, 1770 circa. Incisione in rame all'acquaforte, colore d'epoca, cm 29,5 x 42 circa (il foglio).
