DALRYMPLE, Alexander.
London: for the Author, 1770-71. Quarto (261 x 208 mm). Contemporary brown calf, rebacked to style, titles to red morocco label to spine in gilt, raised bands tooled in gilt to spine, compartments elaborately tooled in gilt, double ruled frame to covers in gilt, board edges ruled in gilt. Slight wear to extremities, a couple of scratches and a little worming to boards, book block edges browned, a very good copy indeed. Folding map frontispiece and 3 other folding maps and charts, 12 engraved plates, 7 of them folding. First edition of this important collection of earlier accounts of Pacific voyages. Having made a series of voyages in the East Indies during the late 1750s and early 1760s, Dalrymple resigned his post with the East India Company in order to return to London to promote the establishment of a trading community at Balambangan, "where he had obtained for the Company a grant of land" (ODNB). Whilst in Britain he continued his research into the "counterpoise" theory of a great southern continent, publicizing it in the present work, which "provided James Cook with valuable knowledge for his successful navigation of Torres Strait. By circumnavigating New Zealand, Cook on his first voyage had imposed severe limitations on [the counterpoise] hypothesis, and on his second voyage in 1772-75, he completely disproved it; nevertheless Dalrymple's writings had done much to maintain official interest in Pacific exploration" (ANB). Dalrymple had been being adopted by the Royal Society as their candidate to lead the Transit of Venus expedition, but a misunderstanding between the … [Click Below for Full Description]

OGINO, Gengai (or Shigen or Taishiu)
1770. 12 woodcuts in the text. 29 folding leaves (lacking final leaf with colophon). 8vo, orig. wrappers, orig. block-printed title label on upper cover, new stitching. [Kyoto?]: Preface dated 1770. Second edition (1st ed.: 1763) of a very scarce and important book regarding Shiraku. Yoshi Kogyu (1724-1800), a high-ranking official interpreter attached to the Nagasaki Commissioner's office, became interested in Western medicine through his work at Dejima. He read many Dutch works on the subject and asked the Dutch doctors about the methods described in the works. Kogyu mastered many procedures, including bloodletting, and became a famous teacher, training more than 600 medical students. In the second half of the 18th century, Japanese doctors incorporated the Western technique of bloodletting with acupuncture - learned from the Chinese - to form a unique treatment called Shiraku. Ogino was a pioneer of Western bloodletting. "Gengai Ogino (1737-1806), one of the students of the interpreter Kogyu, published a book called Shiraku-hen in 1771 [sic]. It tells of Western bloodletting, cupping and leeching and the use of a ceramic bowl to collect blood in the manner of the barber-surgeons. Such bowls had been produced in the famous Arita porcelain for export to the West since late in the 17th century...[it] depicts the venous circulation occluded by a tourniquet on an arm that is supported by a stick reminiscent of the itinerant barber-surgeon's walking stick. The popliteal space and the scalp were also sites for bleeding... "Shiraku-hen also illustrated not … [Click Below for Full Description]

(GERMAIN, Elizabeth, Lady).
[London, 1770. pp. 12; a few early annotations in ink. A rare auction catalogue of the celebrated collection of Lady Elizabeth 'Betty' Germain, who was among the most notable collectors of the eighteenth century. Besides the 75 lots of pictures (including works by Durer, Hilliard, Holbein, Da Vinci, Rapahel and Titian) is found 'The DAGGER of HENRY VIIIth, designed by HOLBEIN, and most richly and magnificently ornamented with diamonds and rubies', to which an early annotator has added in the margin '[Bo]ught for 50 Guineas for Mr Horace Walpole.' The dagger was indeed Walpole's and was kept by him in the Tribune at Strawberry Hill. Its current whereabouts is unknown. Walpole, who was fascinated by Germain as a collector acquired other items included in the sale, including Hilliard miniatures (one of the Earl of Essex now in the Yale Center for British Art) and a Holbein portrait of Louis XII of France. ESTC lists extant copies of the catalogue at only Cambridge, King's College London, the Ashmolean, Yale and Getty, the BL copy having been destroyed in the Blitz. The manuscript notes added to an added blank leaf are by the later owner of the volume, Alfred Waterman of Bristol, and include a further anecdote of the sale, apparently drawn from one of Walpole's letters, concerning John Dee's obsidian scrying stone which was recognised as such by Walpole before the sale and given to him (it does not appear in the catalogue). Contemporary calf tinted in green, boards stamped in gilt with the arms of the King of Spain, Charles III, wide gilt fillet, flat spine also tooled in gilt; the blanks renewed, rubbed and scratched, some scuffing, partial restorations. Each of the full-page drawings shows a different stage in the treatment of tobacco within an eighteenth-century industrial complex, almost definitely then new Royal Tobacco Factory at Seville. It not only depicts how snuff was produced, from chopping the sheaves of tobacco through to the grinding, sifting, airing, cleaning, drying and storing processes but also the administrative infrastructure that became necessary when the Royal Tobacco Factory introduced the industrial production of tobacco in Spain. It thus also depicts the entrance hall and register room where the workers checked in and changed into their uniform, the storeroom and office where they were issued with their tools and the office for the chief accountant and the foreman who supervised the works. Each drawing shows not only the workers but their supervisors and administrative staff. It is a unique collection of which no other copies are known nor were any of the individual drawings … [Click Below for Full Description]

François Baron de Tott (1733-93) et al.
Various places, s, 1770. THE FRANÇOIS BARON DE TOTT ARCHIVE OF FRANCO-OTTOMAN TRADE, DIPLOMACY AND ESPIONAGE HISTORY (1760s-1780s).OTTOMAN EMPIRE / FRANCE / ESPIONAGE / ECONOMIC & DIPLOMATIC HISTORY / LEBANON: Presented here is a highly important archive of over 50 manuscript documents from the papers of François Baron de Tott (1733-93), the famous French-Hungarian diplomat, military engineer and bestselling author of ‘Me?moires du baron de Tott, sur les Turcs et les Tartares’ (Amsterdam, 1784). The majority of the archive relates to De Tott’s consequential role as the Inspector General of the ‘Échelles du Levant’ (French treaty ports in the Ottoman Empire), whereupon in 1777-8 he conducted an intelligence-gathering mission to the Near and Middle East at the behest of King Louis XVI and his ministers. It is important to note that Franco-Ottoman trade was then one of the cornerstones of the French economy and the lifeblood of Marseille, the country’ greatest commercial port. Featured here are many of De Tott’s manuscript drafts of the reports and memoranda he submitted to the King, including his grand "Compte-rendu détaillé de l’inspection du Baron de Tott des Echelles du Levant et de Barberie", a masterpiece of commercial espionage and social and political commentary, as well as an engaging work of travel literature. The recommendations De Tott advances in these treatises directly led to the complete overhaul of French diplomatic and trade policy towards the Ottoman Empire in the critical period leading up to the French Revolution; a new direction codified by the King’s ‘Or … [Click Below for Full Description]

Handel, George Frideric
Printed for William Randall c. 1770, London. First edition of the score of Handel's epic Biblical libretto first performed in 1739 with all subsequent printings substantially revised. Folio, bound in three quarters morocco over marbled boards with gilt tooling to the spine in six compartments within raised gilt bands, red morocco spine label lettered in gilt, engraved title page and frontispiece portrait of Handel by Houbraken. In near fine condition. Scarce. By the early 18th century, Handel had long been a resident of London where he had great success as a composer of Italian operas. In 1733, however, a rival opera company, The Opera of the Nobility, had split the audience for Italian opera in London. Handel thus began to find new audiences through presenting oratorio and other choral works in English, most notably his 1741 Messiah. In composing Israel in Egypt, in what was by then his common practice, Handel recycled music from his own previous compositions and also made extensive use of musical parody. The work premiered at London's King's Theatre in the Haymarket on April 4, 1739 with 'Elisabeth Duparc "la Francesina", William Savage, John Beard (tenor), Turner Robinson, Gustavus Waltz, and Thomas Reinhold. Nicolas Chorier]
ont> Not Stated : Not Stated, 1770 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A very scarce, duodecimo copy of this erotic novel by Nicolas Chorier. In the original Latin, this work is extremely scarce in any edition, due to its content. This novel is considered to be the first pornographic work written in Latin. It forms a collection of dialogues with Tullia, an Italian woman in her twenties, who is charged with teaching her young cousin Ottavia about sex and sexuality by Ottavia's mother. To do so, she seduces Ottavia and teaches her in a practical nature. In this writing Chorier defends tribadism, and explores female sexuality. Lacking the main title page, but retaining the half-titles to each section. Therefore, this copy is undated. In Latin. There are very few copies of this work in this pocket sized format. Two parts in one, as called for. This work has been published under many different titles, in several languages. The English title is the 'Dialogues of Luisa Siegea' or 'The School of Women, or the Seven Flirtatious Encounters of Aloisia'. Upon its initial publication, the work was circulated through the libertine community, under various imprints. All details of eighteenth editions of this work on Copac and Worldcat state that the imprints to title pages are false and that they were actually published in Paris. This work is lacking the original title page, so it is difficult to decipher exactly which Latin edition this is. One of the original titles of this work was 'Aloisiae Sigaeae, Toletanae, Satyra sotadica de arcanis Amoris et Veneris'. It was purported to have been writte … [Click Below for Full Description]
