PAUL REVERE
Boston, MA. Engraving. "The Bloody Massacre perpetrated in King-Street Boston on March 5th 1770 by a party of the 29th Reg." Printed by Edes & Gill, Boston, Mass., 1770. First edition, second state (clock showing 10:20), original hand coloring. 1 p., LVG watermark, 9⅝ x 12 in. Revere's print quickly became one of the most successful examples of political propaganda of all time. The depiction of the event, and a poem printed below, vilify the British Army and list the first casualties of the American Revolution: "Unhappy Boston! see thy Sons deplore, Thy hallow'd Walks besmear'd with guiltless Gore. The unhappy Sufferers were Mess[ieur]s Saml Gray, Saml Maverick, Jams Caldwell, Crispus Attucks & Pat[ric]K Carr Killed. Six wounded; two of them (Christr Monk & John Clark) Mortally." Rushed into print less than a month after the event, Revere's print helped unite the colonists and, in American minds, cast the British as aggressive oppressors- making rebellion easier to justify. By the spring of 1770, New England's metropolis had been smoldering with discontent. In 1765, Parliament had imposed the Stamp Act. Though repealed, it was soon replaced by Townshend's "Intolerable Acts," including new taxes. Then, the Crown's commissioners of customs, fearing (with good reason) for their safety, had requested military support. In 1768, several infantry regiments, accompanied by a small artillery train, were tasked with keeping order in the city. Nearly 2,000 soldiers lived amongst Boston's population of just 15,000. The quartering of the troops in private homes was seen as an addi … [Click Below for Full Description]

Lister, Martin
Oxonii: E Typographeo Clarendoniano, 1770. iv, 7, [1], [4], 6, 12, 77, [1], 1084 engravings on 439 plates (9 folding). Hardback. 2 parts in one, folio (376x240mm), sympathetically rebound in 20th century brown half morocco, raised bands to spine, gt title. Some offsetting, occasional spotting or browning, 2 plates lightly shaved, one fore-margin with two short tears (not affecting engravings). Ink stamp of 'Royal Institution of Great Britain' to endpaper. Second complete edition, edited by William Huddesford. Martin Lister (1639-1712) was a physician to Queen Anne, and generally considered as the founder of conchology in England. The complete first edition of this work was issued between 1685 and 1692. This edition had 490 pages, with 1062 engraved copper plates, showing 2000 figures of molluscs. The illustrations were the work of his daughters Anna and Susanna. Lister encouraged their drawing abilities, and they would have used the shells in his collection, or those sent by friends such as Sir Hans Sloane, from which to make their drawings. They were also assisted with the etching or engraving of the plates. The book was initially published in four parts. In 1712 Lister bequeathed the original copper plates to the Ashmolean Museum, and in 1770, the curator of the Museum, William Huddesford, published this edition of the book. He reprinted the illustrations from the original plates, and included additional notes from Lister's manuscript. Nissen ZBI, 2529; Keynes, Dr Martin Lister, 49. Philadelphia, 1770's. Easily, the most special book I've ever had....!One of our first successful German Americans in the Lancaster, PA area, Andreas Bausman, collected several current almanacs (1775-1783) and took them to a Philadelphia printer to have them bound for his farmstead library. Two hundred years later, here they are, preserved for us to appreciate. Printed in German, they are a "contemporary" glimpse into our Revolutionary War era. See Image #1 for a full description of all twelve issues and history. You'll never find another...

Amsterdam & Leipzig: 1770. Condition: Very good for age. 284 year old set in the original bindings. All covers firmly attached, some splitting between covers and spine, many spine labels missing, gilt coat of arms on covers are all still visible and only lightly worn. Set of 39 ancient books in very good condition. Bound in the original full leather, decorated by hand-tooled gilt. Spines with five raised bands and two leather spine labels. Covers have large coat of arms deeply embossed on front and rear. Books dated 1770-1778, and numbered 1-38 & 40, giving the impression the set is missing the 39th volume; however 37 has a half title stating it contains both 37 & 38 and the 38th volume is marked on the title page 39. Possibly the numbering on the spines is a bookbinding error. Overall the set is in very good condition. Leather has visible wear on most volumes, chipping, rubbed areas and some with splitting between spines and covers, but since the bindings were sewn, all covers remain firmly attached. Illustrated with many folding maps. Each book has at least 1, while others can have as many as 10. Track Page Views With Auctiva's FREE Counter. [Attributes: First Edition]

[BRASS FOUNDRY PATTERN BOOK, English 18th century]
1770. [Birmingham, England, late 18th century]. Oblong quarto. (7 1/2 x 11 inches). 113 engraved plates, on laid paper, priced throughout in manuscript. Later calf backed marbled paper covered boards, flat spine ruled and lettered in gilt. A rarely encountered pattern book or trade catalogue of 18th century English furniture hardware, including drawer pulls, keyholes, hinges, locks, castors, bolts and more. By 1770, over thirty different brass foundries operated in Birmingham, England, making it the epicenter of furniture hardware design in the last quarter of the 18th century. At roughly the same period, trade catalogues, like the present, began to be issued by both furniture and hardware makers alike. In all, over 500 designs are shown on the 113 consecutively numbered plates, from rather simple hinges to incredibly ornate pulls. Although no engravers' names are identified, it has been suggested that the foundries themselves produced such plates, utilizing the talents of their own craftsmen, who by their very occupation would have been highly skilled at etching on metal. Such pattern books "illustrate the beginning of what was then a new movement in the conditions of the crafts, namely, the growth of the organised factory as a means of production and distribution, as compared with the earlier limitation of these functions to the efforts of individuals" (Young). A Journey from London to Genoa through England, Portugal, Spain and France" (Mario Fubini in D.B.I., VI, 1964). Raccolta de' viaggi più interessanti eseguiti nelle varie parti del mondo, tanto per terra quanto per mare, dopo quelli del celebre Cook. Piccioni, n. 20 e sgg. A rare set of original hand-coloured etchings of a variety of British birds by and/or after William Hayes, from his 1770-75 work 'A Natural History of British Birds'. These lively and exuberant plates are also noteworthy as being amongst the earliest attempts to depict the birds life-size. The birds here are the fieldfare, the male sparrowhawk, the young cuckoo and white water-wagtail, the hen-harrier, male and female goatsuckers, a female sparrowhawk, male and female whin-chats, and male and female stone-smitches. Hayes 'was a good bird artist... and his impressive large portraits of British species... were used to make forty folio etched hand-coloured plates, including 47 bird figures, for... [the present work]... Hayes executed all but eight of the plates himself... At this stage he appears to have been learning how … [Click Below for Full Description]

Thomas H. Battle!
1770. Here is a hard to find edition of Crime and Punishment, published by Newbery in London in 1770, actually the third edition of the book. Bound in its original full leather binding, with gilt detailing and red leather title block on spine. You can see in the images that the binding is fairly worn, both at the hinges, pulling, chipping to the spine, staining and scuffs to covers. Contents appears fully intact and in good shape, with light foxing present. A neat thing - the original owner inscribed the outside front cover - hard to read - but I believe it says "James Porridger - his book" and then a few other lines about who might have presented it. On the inside of the front cover is the library label of Thomas Hall Battle (1860-1936), the banker, industrialist, attorney, and educator, who was born in Raleigh, NC, and was a descendant of a long line of jurists and educators. His father was Kemp P. Battle, president of The University of North Carolina. A cool item associated with an important North Carolina family. I could only find one copy of this book for sale online and it was over $1,000, most copies are located in important libraries around the world. Buyer to pay shipping, good luck!
