Bon exemplaire. [Beethoven, Ludwig Van. (1770-1827)] [Schickh, Johann]Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Literatur, Theater und Mode. Zweytes Quartal. - INCLUDING A CONTEMPORARY REVIEW OF BEETHOVEN'S SECOND ACADEMY CONCERT OF MAY 23, 1824 including THE NINTH SYMPHONY Vienna: Anton Strauss. 1824. Bound collection of the issues numbered 40 - 78, dated April 1 - June 29, 1824. 339 pp, paginated continuously beginning on page 337, with a complete table of contents. Page 579-580 (3. Juni 1824), features the report on "Zweyte musikalische Akademie des Herrn Ludwig van Beethoven" which includes details regarding the second ever performance of the Ninth Symphony. Following the legendary first performance of the 9th Symphony, Louis-Antoine Duport, the theater manager of Theater am Kärntnertor (where the first performance had taken place), scheduled a second one for the same venue. Duport convinced Beethoven to agree to a somewhat different program. Only one movement of the Missa Solemnis, the Kyrie, was performed, compared with the three movements which were performed at the Ninth's premiere. Moreover, the second concert had a decidedly Italianate tinge with the inc … [Click Below for Full Description]

Manuscript. [Ukraine, 1770s]. Date seen on the watermark '1764'. 23x17,5 cm. Full leather period binding. No clasps. Very good condition. Text is complete. Modern miniature on the first page. The manuscript version of one of the most important and in uential texts in Medieval Ukraine, the collection of the lives of saints that were celebrated in Kiev Pechersk Lavra from 11th century on. Written in XIIIth century, the earliest known manuscript is dates 1406. Written as the chronicle of life in the cave monastery, Paterik is an important documentation of Kiev Rus'. At the same time it could be regarded as one of the most important reading books for the educated people across Rus' and Russia. Paterik was created in the form used in Byzantine tradition but the content and the composition are different from such examples as Sinai Paterik, etc. The text was changing over time, the new lives of saints were being added. The most important alteration was made in 17th century, when the version of Iosif Trizna (1647-1656) was created. Iosif was preparing the rst printed edition that came out in 1661. Our text is tied with the same version. Trizna editing transformed Paterik from collection of biographies of important personalities of Lavra to something bigger: the events are regarded in context with Russian and even universal spiritual life. The existence of approximately 200 manuscript versions are known, mostly in Russian and Ukrainian State Collections. Our copy is signi cant because of the contemporary marginalia comments, like 'look what the blessed youth has done' that could have … [Click Below for Full Description]

TACHIBANA, Minko
Numerous fine woodcuts with stencilled color throughout. 20 folded leaves; 15 folded leaves. Two vols. Large 8vo, later silk covered wrappers, new stitching. Tokyo: 1770. First edition; a book of considerable beauty and rarity. This work depicts twenty-eight craftsmen, each at work in a different traditional profession; it is a famously beautiful book merging illustration with technology and poetry. Our copy comes from the celebrated library of Japanese books formed by Donald and Mary Hyde (her sale, Christie's New York, 7 October 1988, lot 123). Tachibana, while not as famous as Sharaku and Utamaro, was active as an illustrator in the second half of the 18th century, the period during which the ukiyo-e prints reached their zenith of their artistic and technical excellence. Tachibana, originally an embroiderer of decorative designs on fabrics in the Kansai area, felt he was better suited as an artist and began to make woodblock prints in the manner of Sukenobu, who had become famous for his Kansai-style ukiyo-e. After mastering this style, Minko moved to Tokyo and adopted the very different "beautiful women" style of Harunobu. Becoming well-known for his book illustrations, Tachibana issued a series of books between 1751 and 1771 which enjoyed considerable success. This beautifully illustrated book pictures twenty-eight crafts: hatter, mirror polisher, carpenter, swordsmith, armorer, cordmaker, maker of hairdress ties, weaver, papermaker, engraver, maker of bamboo blinds, quivermaker, basketmaker, ballmaker, glassblower, fanmaker, koto (Japanese harp) make … [Click Below for Full Description]

Ottimo esemplare. 2, pag. 71). Ciononostante l'opera conobbe parecchia diffusione in varie lingue. [Arabic epistolography].
1770. Small folio (ca 24 x 30 cm). Ca. 170 letters in Algerian Arabic, pasted to 100 numbered leaves. Contemporary papered boards (severely rubbed and bumped) with remnants of a green calfskin spine. A vast ensemble of handwritten letters in Arabic, assembled by the Franco-Algerian typesetter A. Duchâteau who used the collection both to perfect his command of practical Arabic in various local dialects and as a typographical style guide. Most of the letters were written by local dignitaries, including Beys, Kaïds, Sheikhs, provincial leaders and village chiefs. To obtain them, Duchâteau must have drawn upon various sources such as his own relations and other Algerian families, the French community, and the military. About a third of the letters include Duchâteau's French translations or at least notes about their origin, giving dates or details of their content or identifying the recipient. - Duchâteau worked as typesetter for the Algiers-based "Bastide" printing house in the early 1850s. Specializing in Arabic typography, he was especially close to Louis-Jacques Bresnier (1814-69), the first professor of Arabic in Algiers. It was Duchâteau who attended to the printing of the Arabic parts of Bresnier's chrestomathies and language guides, and it is apparent that the album also served as documentation for the professor's own publications, such as his "Chrestomathie arabe: lettres, actes, et pièces diverses" (1857). In the preface to his "Cours pratique et théorique de langue arabe", published by Bastide in 1855, Bresnier explains that his work could only be realized thanks to … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Harvey, William] van Bemmel, Willem (after the artist) / Houbraken, J. (engraver).
[Amsterdam], J. Houbraken, no year [c.1770]. Original copper engraving portrait of english physician William Harvey, ″ first known physician to describe completely and in detail the systemic circulation and properties of blood". The vintage engraving shows William Harvey, head-and-shoulders portrait, facing slightly left, in a medallion draped with cloth, also shows a drawing of the cardiovascular system, parts of a plant, and a snake entwined around a stick, suggesting a caduceus. Beautifully Framed. Size of frame with Harvey's portrait: 32 cm x 38 cm. Size of the actual portrait engraving: 9.5 cm x 15.5 cm. Excellent condition ! William Harvey (1 April 1578 - 3 June 1657) was an English physician who made seminal contributions in anatomy and physiology. He was the first known physician to describe completely and in detail the systemic circulation and properties of blood being pumped to the brain and body by the heart, though earlier writers, such as Realdo Colombo, Michael Servetus, and Jacques Dubois, had provided precursors of the theory. In 1973 the William Harvey Hospital was constructed in the town of Ashford, a few miles from his birthplace of Folkestone. William's father, Thomas Harvey, was a jurat of Folkestone where he served the office of mayor in 1600. Records and personal descriptions delineate him as an overall calm, diligent, and intelligent man whose „sons... revered, consulted and implicitly trusted in him... (they) made their father the treasurer of their wealth when they acquired great estates...(He) kept, employed, and improved their gainings to their g … [Click Below for Full Description]

BLACKSTONE, William.
London: At The Clarendon Press, 1770. FOURTH EDITION. 4 vols., square 4to., 10-7/8" x 8-5/8". Bound in contemporary full tan calf over cords, expertly rebacked, gilt lettered black morocco spine labels, with the 2 tables in volume 2 one folding, text clean and bright throughout. The most influential publication in the history of modern Anglo-American law. 'Since its first publication in 1765, Blackstone's Commentaries has exercised enormous influence over common law in England and elsewhere. 'Until the Commentaries, the ordinary Englishman had viewed the law as a vast, unintelligible and unfriendly machine. If the English constitution survived the troubles of the (nineteenth) century, it was because the law had gained a new popular respect, and this was due in part to the enormous success of Blackstone's work. He did for the English what the imperial publication of Roman law did for the people of Rome' (PMM). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

[HOLBACH, PAUL HENRY THIRY, BARON D']. MIRABAUD (Pseud.). - [THE BIBLE OF MATERIALISM WITH INTERESTING PROVENANCE - PMM 215]
London [recte: Amsterdam, M.M. Rey], 1770. Bound in 2 contemp. hcalf. with tome-and titlelabels on spine. Raised bands. Spines a bit rubbed. (12), 370; (4), 412 pp. Printed on good paper, internally clean and fine. This copy has belonged to the well known Swedish literary historian, bibliographer, and book-collector, Johan Hinric Lidén (1741-1793) and bears his name on inside of front covers together with his engraved superexlibris "Bibliothecae Lidenianae". From the dating and Lidén's note on the first half-title we can see, that he acquired the work in Paris the year it was published, 1770 - he was in Paris at this time - and he notes that it was prohibited when it was published "Förbuden strængeligen udi Paris, straxt then dær utkom". The work was condemned to burning by the Parisian parliament and confiscated, but Lidén managed to get the copy out of France. ¶ The rare first edition, first issue, of d'Holbach's main work, the main work of materialism, and one of the most important works of natural philosophy. D'Holbach (1723-1789), who was raised by a wealthy uncle, whom he inherited, together with his title of Baron, in 1753, maintained one of the most famous salons in Paris. This salon became the social and intellectual centre for the Encyclopédie, which was edited by Diderot and d'Alembert, whom he became closely connected with. D'Holbach himself also contributed decisively to the Encyclopédie, with at least 400 signed contributions, and probably as many unsigned, between 1752 and 1765. The "Côterie holbachique" or "the café of Europe", as the salon was known, attract … [Click Below for Full Description]

BLACKSTONE, WILLIAM. - THE POPULARAZATION OF THE ENGLISH LAW - PMM 212.
Oxford, Clarendon Press, 1770-69. Large 4to. Bound in 4 uniform contemp. full calf. Raised bands. Titlelabels gone. Wear to spine ends. Some wear to spines and edges of covers, some scratches to covers, corners bumped. Some hinges weakening. (2),II,(8),485;(8),520,(18);(8),455,XXVII;(8),436,VII,(38) pp., 2 engraved plates (in vol. 2), Appendic to vol. 4. Wide-margined, light browning to margins. A few brownspots. ¶ "Blackstone's great work on the laws of England is the extreme example of justification of an existing state of affairs by virtue of its history..... Until the Commentaries, the ordinary Englishman had viewed the law as a vast, unintelligible and unfriendly machine... Blackstone's great achievement was to popularize the law and the traditions which had influenced its formation... He takes a delight in describing and defending as the essence of the constitution the often anomalous complexities which had grown into the laws of England over the centuries. But he achieves the astonishing feat of communicating this delight, and this is due to a style which is itself always lucid and graceful" (PMM 212, the first edition 1765-69).

PRIESTLEY, Joseph
Printed for J. Johnson and J. Payne, London. [2], 3, iv-xv, [1], 132pp, [8]. With terminal advertisement leaf, 25 engraved plates, folding, two of which with moveable flaps. Contemporary half calf, marbled boards, gilt, contrasting morocco lettering-piece. Rubbed, with chips to foot of spine, rubbing to surfaces, bumping to corners. Presentation copy, inscribed 'The Gift of the author to B. Forster. 1770', with two further ink inscriptions 'B. Forster' and 'B.M. Forster 17807'. Joseph Priestley (1733-1804), English separatist theologian and natural philosopher credited with the discovery and isolation of Oxygen in a gaseous state. In the preface to this illustrated guide to artistic perspective, dedicated to Joshua Reynolds, Priestley outlines his confidence in the near perfectibility of perspective 'of all the imitative arts', 'because it is wholly within the sphere of mathematical science, a branch of knowledge which has been most diligently cultivated of late years'. Ever the scientist, with a particular interest in electricity, Priestley included two drawings of electrical apparatus within the examples of this volume. The recipient of this presentation copy was almost certainly the antiquary Rev. Benjamin Forster (1736-1805) of Wakefield, who is present amongst the list of subscribers to Priestley's History of the present state of discoveries relating to vision, light and colours (London, 1772). The later inscription 'B.M. Forster' would thus be that of Benjamin Meggot Forster (1764-1829), nephew of Rev. Benjamin, English botanist and mycologist responsible for several … [Click Below for Full Description]

Bel exemplaire. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

S.t., London, 1770. In-24 (90x50 mm.), pp. 78. Raffinata legatura in marocchino rosso foncé firmata "Lortic", dorso a nervi, titolo e data topica e cronica incisi in oro al dorso, tagli e ampia merlatura interna dorate, segnacolo serico tricolore. TAYLOR, Isaac & Josiah, TAYLOR, Josiah, PRIESTLEY & WEALE, and WEALE, John, Booksellers & Publishers
From 1770 to 1834 in High Holborn, London, the Taylor dynasty published and distributed the architectural and engraved design books which established for Great Britain the correct styles of building, furnishing, and decorating "rural retreats" and "noblemen's seats." The publishing house itself was established by the engraver Isaac Taylor (1730-1807), in 1770 at the former premises of A. and Henry Webley. Isaac retired from active association with the firm about 1787. His third son Josiah (1761-1834), took over the business and followed the directions established by his father. The business, which became known as the Architectural Library in 1787, established a virtual monopoly in this field. As the Industrial Revolution took hold, the firm added more titles on civil engineering, machinery, railroads, and the manufacture of cast iron. In 1819, a new competitor arrived on the scene: John Weale (1791-1862), who was taken into partnership by the widow of another publisher, George Priestley. Weale's interest in architecture led to a rapid expansion of the firm's activity in this area. Soon, Priestley and Weale became the other leading architectural publishers of the period. Following Josiah Taylor's death in 1834, Taylor's Architectural Library was purchased by Weale, who rapidly expanded the business, publishing extensively on all aspects of architecture and engineering. The firm was continued following Weale's death in 1862 by his second son, James Watt Weale (1843-77). This collection of catalogues was patiently formed over a 45-year period. All are rare. … [Click Below for Full Description]
