Thomas H. Battle!
Here is a hard to find edition of Crime and Punishment, published by Newbery in London in 1770, actually the third edition of the book. Bound in its original full leather binding, with gilt detailing and red leather title block on spine. You can see in the images that the binding is fairly worn, both at the hinges, pulling, chipping to the spine, staining and scuffs to covers. Contents appears fully intact and in good shape, with light foxing present. A neat thing - the original owner inscribed the outside front cover - hard to read - but I believe it says "James Porridger - his book" and then a few other lines about who might have presented it. On the inside of the front cover is the library label of Thomas Hall Battle (1860-1936), the banker, industrialist, attorney, and educator, who was born in Raleigh, NC, and was a descendant of a long line of jurists and educators. His father was Kemp P. Battle, president of The University of North Carolina. A cool item associated with an important North Carolina family. I could only find one copy of this book for sale online and it was over $1,000, most copies are located in important libraries around the world. Buyer to pay shipping, good luck!

Samuel Richardson
London: W Strahan, J and F Rivington. Clarissa (1774) is the Seventh edition, Pamela (1776) is the eleventh edition, Grandison (1770) is the sixth edition. With a frontispiece to all volumes of Clarissa. Illustrated frontispiece to volume I of Grandison. Frontispiece for volumes III and IV of Clarissa are bound in the incorrect volumes respectively. Folding plate to letter X of Clarissa volume I. Pamela tells the story of a beautiful 15 year old maidservant whose country landowner master makes unwanted advances toward her at the death of his mother. The History of Sir Charles Grandison was written in response to Henry Fielding's The History of Tom Jones which parodied morals in Richardson's previous novels. Grandison is a morally good man compared to the male characters of Richardson's previous novels. Clarissa tells the story of a heroine whose quest for virtue is thwarted by her family. It is also the largest novel in the English language. Richardson's epistolary novels brought him great fame as an author. He was already an established printer and publisher, the skill of his printing is revealed in 'paper x' of Clarissa which is one of her 'mad papers'. The text is printed at different angles on the page. CONDITION In uniform speckled calf bindings. Externally, generally smart with rubbing to the joints and extremities. Tidemark to front board of volume IV of Grandison. In full calf bindings with gilt stamping to spines. Repair to front board of volume VIII of Grandison. Externally, generally smart with rubbing to the extremities to the head and tail of spines. Small loss … [Click Below for Full Description]

Mirabaud, J-P. [Holbach, Paul-Henri Thiri]
Marc-Michel Rey, 1770. Condition: Collectible, Very Good. Londres [i.e. Amsterdam], 1770. First edition, first issue, with comma after Londres on title page. Half title on first volume only. Contemporary mottled calf, spines gilt, floral decorated spines, gilt spine labels. A beautiful complete set of Holbach's major work in an original binding. Joints dried, some very small cracks to heel of binding on tome 1, small chips to leather at corners, some light scattered foxing to contents. Remains in excellent, near fine condition overall. Holbach published the work under the name of Jean-Baptiste de Mirabaud, the secretary of the Academie Francaise who had died ten years previously. Denying the existence of a deity, and refusing to admit as evidence all a priori arguments, d'Holbach saw in the universe as nothing more than matter in motion, bound by inexorable natural laws of cause and effect. There is, he wrote "no necessity to have recourse to supernatural powers to account for the formation of things." "He was far too dogmatically atheistic for most of the "philosophes" who were 'skeptical' and vacillated between atheism and deism." - PMM 215; Kress 6737, Tchemerzine VI, page 243. HUME, David
1770. "Beauty is no quality in things themselves: It exists merely in the mind which contemplates them." - David Hume The famous History of England by David Hume; the most popular and best-selling account on the history of England. Beginning with the Roman invasion of Britain in the first century B.C., this history covers all aspects of English history though the Revolution of 1688 including the Norman Conquests, Crusades, William Wallace, Robert the Bruce, Tudor Dynasty, Seven Years' War, The English Civil War, and the Restoration of the English crown. Allibone notes that this work was considerably censored for the first publication however, it was still popular following the first edition. According to Drabble, "the work became immensely popular both in Britain and abroad and was extolled by both Gibbon and Voltaire" (Drabble, p.482). [Attributes: First Edition]

ANONIMO
Molto ben conservata. Tracce di stampa di inchiostro in controparte. Manca a Zacharakis "A catalogue of printed maps of Greece 1477-1800. Third edition"

KANT, Immanuel
1770. First edition of Karl Heinrich Ludwig Pölitz's publication, from manuscripts he had purchased, of notes from three courses on metaphysics taught by Kant in the 1770s and 1780s. 'In his foreword to that publication, Pölitz explains that these notes derive from two separate sources, thereafter named Metaphysik L1 and Metaphysik L2, respectively, where 'L' stands for "Leipzig." Pölitz considered the first source, Metaphysik L1, older, more thorough, and more instructive than the second source, Metaphysik L2. The first source included a prolegomena, an ontology, and a metaphysica specialis, comprised of cosmology, psychology, and theology. Pölitz thought that the second source, Metaphysik L2, was copied from another, unknown source, in 1788, only to have corrections and marginalia in someone else's handwriting added in 1789' (Julian Wuerth, 'Kant's Immediatism, Pre-Critique', Journal of the History of Philosophy, 44.4, 2006, 489-532). Adickes 114. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: 8vo, lxiv, 343, [1] pp., contemporary marbled boards, green label hand-lettered, rubbed at extremities, spine ends slightly worn, internally clean with no stamps or inscriptions, a very good copy.
