Grandison is a morally good man compared to the male characters of Richardson's previous novels. Clarissa tells the story of a heroine whose quest for virtue is thwarted by her family. It is also the largest novel in the English language. Richardson's epistolary novels brought him great fame as an author. He was already an established printer and publisher, the skill of his printing is revealed in 'paper x' of Clarissa which is one of her 'mad papers'. The text is printed at different angles on the page. CONDITION In uniform speckled calf bindings. Externally, generally smart with rubbing to the joints and extremities. Mirabaud, J-P. [Holbach, Paul-Henri Thiri]
Marc-Michel Rey, 1770. Condition: Collectible, Very Good. Londres [i.e. Amsterdam], 1770. First edition, first issue, with comma after Londres on title page. Half title on first volume only. Contemporary mottled calf, spines gilt, floral decorated spines, gilt spine labels. A beautiful complete set of Holbach's major work in an original binding. Joints dried, some very small cracks to heel of binding on tome 1, small chips to leather at corners, some light scattered foxing to contents. Remains in excellent, near fine condition overall. Holbach published the work under the name of Jean-Baptiste de Mirabaud, the secretary of the Academie Francaise who had died ten years previously. There is, he wrote "no necessity to have recourse to supernatural powers to account for the formation of things." HUME, David
1770. "Beauty is no quality in things themselves: It exists merely in the mind which contemplates them." - David Hume The famous History of England by David Hume; the most popular and best-selling account on the history of England. Beginning with the Roman invasion of Britain in the first century B.C., this history covers all aspects of English history though the Revolution of 1688 including the Norman Conquests, Crusades, William Wallace, Robert the Bruce, Tudor Dynasty, Seven Years' War, The English Civil War, and the Restoration of the English crown. Allibone notes that this work was considerably censored for the first publication however, it was still popular following the first edition. According to Drabble, "the work became immensely popular both in Britain and abroad and was extolled by both Gibbon and Voltaire" (Drabble, p.482). [Attributes: First Edition]

ANONIMO
Molto ben conservata. Tracce di stampa di inchiostro in controparte. Manca a Zacharakis "A catalogue of printed maps of Greece 1477-1800. Third edition"

KANT, Immanuel
1770. First edition of Karl Heinrich Ludwig Pölitz's publication, from manuscripts he had purchased, of notes from three courses on metaphysics taught by Kant in the 1770s and 1780s. 'In his foreword to that publication, Pölitz explains that these notes derive from two separate sources, thereafter named Metaphysik L1 and Metaphysik L2, respectively, where 'L' stands for "Leipzig." Pölitz considered the first source, Metaphysik L1, older, more thorough, and more instructive than the second source, Metaphysik L2. The first source included a prolegomena, an ontology, and a metaphysica specialis, comprised of cosmology, psychology, and theology. Pölitz thought that the second source, Metaphysik L2, was copied from another, unknown source, in 1788, only to have corrections and marginalia in someone else's handwriting added in 1789' (Julian Wuerth, 'Kant's Immediatism, Pre-Critique', Journal of the History of Philosophy, 44.4, 2006, 489-532). Adickes 114. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: 8vo, lxiv, 343, [1] pp., contemporary marbled boards, green label hand-lettered, rubbed at extremities, spine ends slightly worn, internally clean with no stamps or inscriptions, a very good copy. HUME, David
1770. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask.

It is also the largest novel in the English language. Richardson's epistolary novels brought him great fame as an author. He was already an established printer and publisher, the skill of his printing is revealed in 'paper x' of Clarissa which is one of her 'mad papers'. The text is printed at different angles on the page. In uniform speckled calf bindings. Externally, generally smart with rubbing to the joints and extremities. Beethoven, Ludwig Van. (1770-1827)Vier Arietten und ein Duett (italienisch und deutsch) mit Begleitung des Pianoforte...(Der unterlegte deutsche Text ist von Dr. Chr. Schreiber.) Op.82. Leipzig: Breitkopf & Härtel. [1811]. First edition. Typeset oblong folio, 16 pp. [PN] 1474, printed on pages 3, 5 and 7 only. Kinsky pp.220-22; Hoboken Vol.2, No.360. An attractive and untrimmed copy bound in simple blue paper wraps with an ink annotation in the lower right corner. Contained in a fine custom marbled box with brown leather corners and spine with gilt-impressed title. The autograph of the four airs is lost, which lends added importance to this rare first edition. Composed by Beethoven in 1809, the author of the first arietta text ("Dimmi, ben mio") is unknown and the remaining three ariettas and the duet were written by the renowned Italian librettist Pietro Metastasio. The duet, "Odi l'aura, che dolce sospira," for Soprano and Tenor, was probably sketched in part while Beethoven was studying with Antonio Salieri, circa 1800. The original Italian lyrics were here translated into German by Dr. Christian Schreiber (1781-1857), a distinguished theologian and an associate of publisher Härtel. "Like Op. 75, the five Italian songs published together as Op. 82 by Breitkopf & Härtel in July 1811 were published by Clementi [in London] singly and without opus number. They were all entered at Stationers Hall on February 1, 1811" (Tyson, 84). Beethoven, Ludwig Van. (1770-1827)Grande Fugue tantôt libre, tantôt recherchée pour 2 violons, alte & violoncelle....Oeuvre 133. Vienne: Chez Artaria. [1827]. First edition. Parts. Folio (32 x 25.5cms). Violin I: 10 p. Violin II, viola & cello: 9 p. each. Engraved throughout. [PN] 877. In fine condition, with a small red pencil "16" to the head of each part. Rare first edition of one of the central masterworks of Western Music. Hoboken 524; Kinsky p.405. The 'Grosse Fuge' , Op. 133, is a single-movement composition for string quartet, a massive double fugue, which originally served as the final movement of Beethoven's Quartet No. 13 in Bb major (Op. 130). He then replaced it with a new finale and published the Fugue separately in 1827 as Op. 133. Composed in 1825 when Beethoven was completely deaf, it was first performed in 1826, as the finale of the Bb quartet, by the Schuppanzigh Quartet. Now considered among Beethoven's greatest achievements, Igor Stravinsky called it "an absolutely contemporary piece of music that will be contemporary forever." 'Until the Commentaries, the ordinary Englishman had viewed the law as a vast, unintelligible and unfriendly machine. If the English constitution survived the troubles of the (nineteenth) century, it was because the law had gained a new popular respect, and this was due in part to the enormous success of Blackstone's work. As related by the owner, this book was discovered over thirty years ago inside a house in southern Florida that was being demolished the next day. The house had been abandoned for decades and hundreds of old books had been thrown in a pile on the floor. This book was found after eight hours of sifting through hundreds of books. It was singularly rescued by a book lover and collector who knew one of the demolition crew members. It has been carefully stored and held for thirty years with no conservator or restoration work. It remains today just, as it was found then, over thirty years ago. Our interest is in making a digital copy and finding someone who will conserve and/or restore this historical book. As such, offers to that end will be considered first. _____________________________________________ This book is a scarce and possibly important historical book by Alexander Dalrymple dated 1770.
