[Click Below for Full Description]

Young, Arthur, 1741-1820
London: For W. Strahan and W. Nicholl, 1770. First Edition. Octavo. 4 volume set. 28 engraved plates (many folding). With 27 engraved plates (14 folding) and six folding printed tables. Arthur Young (1741-1820) was the most important agricultural writer of the 18th Century. His careful detailed notes with exact statistical notes was considered by those with vast agricultural holdings as well as the new tools used in America. He traveled over 2500 miles to the northern boundary of the country collecting statistical data from farms of all sizes. Young includes statistics regarding crop rotations, the implements used, cost of labor and provisions, size of farms, number of men and oxen and horses employed. He does not, however, provide detailed analysis, allowing farmers to use the information for their own individual situations. "The best way of learning about farming was to go out into the countryside and see how it was done by the men who were doing it. A record of the different methods used in various parts of the country and of their practical results in yields, in cash, and in profit, could not but be helpful to any working farmer who would take the trouble to read about them and compare them with his own." An Edinburgh edition appeared in 1771 though it has the date 1770. Bound in contemporary calf, raised bands, red and black contrasting morocco spine labels gilt, compartments stamped in gilt, Ex-Library (Augsburg College), on endpaper with bookplate of William Lynn Smart.; generally a very good copy. First Edition, First Printing. Vercruysse 1770, A-6. This is the true first edition with the correct pagination and the comma after “Londres”. Also included here is the rarely seen 4-page “Errata” at the end of volume 1 -- which was added during the printing process when the mistakes were first discovered. Holbach contributed some four hundred articles to the Encyclopédie of his lifelong friend and colleague, Denis Diderot. Diderot, d'Alembert, Helvetius, Voltaire and others of the philosophes met frequently for dinner and philosophical discussion at the Baron's house, which became known as “the café of Europe” (among whose foreign visitors were Wilkes, Hume and Sterne). In the Systême Holbach rejected the Cartesian mind-body dualism and attempted to explain all phenomena, physical and mental, in terms of matter in motion. Holbach rejected religion because he saw it as a wholly harmful influence, and he tried to supply a desirable alternative. In fact, h … [Click Below for Full Description]

Wetsch, Ignaz Joseph (1737-1779).
Rudolph Graeffer, Vienna, 1770. Octavo (18 cm); xxxvi, [4], 268, [22] pages, and folding plate. Half-title present. Untrimmed and largely unopened copy. Bound in publisher's woodblock decorated paper (sometimes called Venetian paper). Light chipping to spine and joints; first twelve leaves with faded water-stain along lower corners. Bookplate of M.R. Heynsius ven den Berg (1882-1969). As issued. Preserved in custom-made black cloth folding case.References: Waller 10258; Blake 487 (Prague edition, published the same year). A product of the Old Vienna School under Gerhard van Swieten, who rejected religious censorship and demanded clinical research, Joseph Wetsch studied medicine at the cutting edge of the scientific method. In response to a popular "organic pulse theory" which held that individual organs had proprietary pulse activity, Wetsch researched and wrote this treatise on circulation, based on observation and clinical studies, arguing forcefully against the theory's French and Spanish advocates (chiefly Henri Fouquet, Franz Solano de Luques, and Theophile de Bordeu). In preparing the text, Wetsch even traveled to Montpellier and to Paris to observe the French experiments first-hand. In 1776, Wetch was appointed Professor Medicine at the University of Moscow, where he died in 1779. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Holbach Systeme De La Nature, 1st Ed., 1770, Philosophy, PMM The So Called "Bible of Materialism" HOLBACH, Paul Henri Thiry, Baron d'. [MIRABAUD, Jean-Babtiste, pseud.]. Systême de la nature. Ou Des loix du monde physique & du monde moral. Par M. Mirabaud. Amsterdam: Marc-Michel Rey , 1770. First edition. Two volumes, octavo. [12], 370; [4], 412 pp. Contemporary full marbled calf, elaborately tooled in gilt compartments with a floral motif with red morocco labels lettered in gilt on spines with raised bands. Volume 1 chipped on headcap, tips bumped and bookplates on pastedowns of both volumes. Volume 1 has slight water staining to margin at first few pages and volume 2 has a tiny wormhole to first 10 pages. Otherwise, a handsome copy of the so-called 'Bible of Materialism'. Paul Heinrich Dietrich, Baron d'Holbach (1723-1789) first became known as a scientist, contributing some four hundred articles to the Encyclopédie of his friend and colleague Denis Diderot. Holbach later turned from science to more dangerous topics, writing and having published abroad, a number of books attacking religion in all aspects, which flooded illegally into France. Unable to publish safely under his own name, he had the ingenious idea of using the names of recently dead French authors. Thus, in 1770, his most famous book, "The System of Nature," appeared under the name of Jean-Baptiste Mirabaud. "In the Système Holbach rejected the Cartesian mind-body dualism and attemped to explain all phenomena, physical and mental, in terms of matter in motion. Chapbook.) WARD (Anne, supposed author)
Printed and sold in Aldermary Church-Yard Bow Lane ?, 1770. with a woodcut of an armillary sphere on the title, a woodcut portrait of the author, and a vignette of a schoolroom (all old cuts, and somewhat indistinct), lower outer corner of last 2 leaves (?oil) stained, pp. 8, 8vo, uncut, 'sewn' ingeniously with a contemporary pin, good. Mrs. Ann Ward is, as the continuation of the title tells us, 'a beautiful young Lady of Five Hundred Pounds a Year; who vows never to Marry any Man but him who resolves the following Questions'. We learn from the text that she is 16 years old. The text begins with her remonstrance to 'an Oxford scholar' who had opined that men would be better off if 'silly, untractable, perverse, useless, imperious' woman had never been created. The questions, ironical, and showing a good grasp both of Scripture and Natural Philosophy, are such as to perplex even the most learned suitor. There were three other printings of this at approximately the same date (2 of them printed in Worcester), all of the utmost rarity. (ESTC T100728, BL and Folger only)

Second copy located of the first and only edition of "Confessions of a libertine", an 18th-century Dutch picaresque, erotic novel in which the principal narrator Karel tells his fiancée Charlotte about his promiscuous past. The story starts with how his father met his mother, Julia, in the monastery where he grew up in. Julia was the 17/18-year-old daughter of the abbot, who was "taught" all about sexuality by her father at an early age. The abbot passed away soon after Karel's father left for the army, and was replaced by a 45-year old Franciscan monk who took turns with both mother and daughter. The situation became unsustainable because of the mother's jealousy of her daughter, causing Julia to flee to her lover; Karel was conceived the following night. The life of Karel's parents gives a glimpse of the story that follows, often taking place in a religious environment. The novel does not only detail the sexual encounters however, but also provides arguments for free morals, for instance pointing out that our ancestors just followed their nature, without being obstructed by any morals. Novels like this have been neglected for about two hundred years and only in the last decennia interest has been revived. With bookplate and owner's inscription. The plate facing page 43 loosely inserted, but otherwise in very good condition. Spine slightly rubbed and colour of the paper sides faded, but still firm and otherwise good.

FIRST EDITION by Warton. 2 volumes. 4to, 288 x 224 mms., pp. [iv], lx [lxi - lxii], 236 [237 - 316 indexes]; [iv], 412 [413 - 416 index, addenda, and corrections], [v] - vii [viii blank], 45 [46 blank, 47 - 48 Index], 5H1 in volume 2 in uncancelled state, later (early 19th century( fine polished calf, gilt border on covers, all edges gilt, with the armorial crest of Frederick, Earl of Cawdor in gilt on each cover; spine sun-darkened and very slightly chipped, but a sumptuous copy, from the library of John Campbell, first Earl of Cawdor (1790 - 1860). Let is suffice to add, that while writers of real abilities are engaged in illustrating the original poets of ancient Greece, we may venture to promise ourselves the revival of true taste, genuine criticism, and Grecian literature." The Monthly Review for July, 1770, chimed in its approval: "It is with particular pleasure that we find that the … [Click Below for Full Description]
