BREDA, NAAR JAN VAN
"Village proche Harlem"? (afbeelding) 26,7 x 36,1 cm. [Click Below for Full Description]

The signature of "Lottin jeune" (Antoine-Prosper Lottin, 1733-1812), the publisher, on the verso of the title-page is a means of ensuring that the book is genuine and not a piracy; several other books (i.a., Barcelona Athenæum [Ateneu Barcelonès] GOd 1011, viewable on-line) bears the signature of Lottin in the same place. It does not seem that this was done to all copies; perhaps a portion of the books was signed, or it could be requested on-demand, as it were. HOLBACH, Paul Henri Thiry, Baron d'
Holbach Systeme De La Nature, 1st Ed., 1770, Philosophy, PMM The So Called "Bible of Materialism" HOLBACH, Paul Henri Thiry, Baron d'. [MIRABAUD, Jean-Babtiste, pseud.]. Amsterdam: Marc-Michel Rey , 1770. First edition. Two volumes, octavo. [12], 370; [4], 412 pp. Contemporary full marbled calf, elaborately tooled in gilt compartments with a floral motif with red morocco labels lettered in gilt on spines with raised bands. Volume 1 chipped on headcap, tips bumped and bookplates on pastedowns of both volumes. Volume 1 has slight water staining to margin at first few pages and volume 2 has a tiny wormhole to first 10 pages. Otherwise, a handsome copy of the so-called 'Bible of Materialism'. Paul Heinrich Dietrich, Baron d'Holbach (1723-1789) first became known as a scientist, contributing some four hundred articles to the Encyclopédie of his friend and colleague Denis Diderot. Holbach later turned from science to more dangerous topics, writing and having published abroad, a number of books attacking religion in all aspects, which flooded illegally into France. Unable to publish safely under his own name, he had the ingenious idea of using the names of recently dead French authors. Thus, in 1770, his most famous book, "The System of Nature," appeared under the name of Jean-Baptiste Mirabaud. "In the Système Holbach rejected the Cartesian mind-body dualism and attemped to explain all phenomena, physical and mental, in terms of matter in motion. He derived the moral and intellectual faculties … [Click Below for Full Description]

Nozeman, C., M. Houttuyn and J. C. Sepp
Amsterdam, Jan Christiaan Sepp, 1770. Single sheet, large folio (52.5 x 34.9 cm). Printed surface 42.0 x 27.0 cm. Hand-coloured copper-engraved plate of the head, claw and one feather of Falco leucocephalus hornotinus. This plate shows the white-tailed eagle, one of the largest eagle species in the world and a close relative of the bald eagle. It is an uncommon bird in the Netherlands. Cornelius or Cornelis Nozeman (1720-1786) was a Dutch Remonstrant churchman and naturalist. "It was in Rotterdam that he began preparations for his great work on Nederlandsche Vogelen (Birds of the Netherlands) that was published in installments by Christiaan Sepp starting in 1770. This work, finished well after both men had died in 1829, was the first 'encyclopedic' book of the birds of the Netherlands" (Wikipedia). A few short tears, skilfully repaired, in the outer margins; the right margin a bit narrow, otherwise a very good, clean plate. Rare. Anker, 369; Nissen IVB, 684; Sitwell, Fine Bird Books, p. 129; Zimmer, p. 469.

Barrow John ( 1770 - 1850 )
Artist: Barrow John ( - 1850 ) ; issued in: London; date: ca 1806, 1770. - technic: Copper print- Aquatinta; colorit: original colored; - condition: Tear on the right side perfectly restored; - size (in cm): 43,5 x 55,5; - description : View of the Cape Coast at the Gold Coast of Ghana in Africa, with decorative offshore ships. Cape Coast Castle is one of about forty ;slave castles;, or large commercial forts, built on the Gold Coast of West Africa (now Ghana) by European traders. It was originally built by the Swedes for trade in timber and gold, but later used in the trans-Atlantic slave trade. Other Ghanaian slave castles include Elmina Castle and Fort Christiansborg. They were used to hold slaves before they were loaded onto ships and sold in the Americas, especially the Caribbean. This ìgate of no returnî was the last stop before crossing the Atlantic Ocean. The Gold Coast was a British colony on the Gulf of Guinea in west Africa that became the independent nation of Ghana in 1957.The first Europeans to arrive at the coast were the Portuguese in 1471. They encountered a variety of African kingdoms, some of which controlled substantial deposits of gold in the soil. In 1482, the Portuguese built the Castle of Elmina, the first European settlement on the Gold Coast. From here they traded slaves, gold, knives, beads, mirrors, rum and guns. News of the successful trading spread quickly, and eventually British, Dutch, Danish, Prussian and Swedish traders arrived as well. The European traders built several forts along the coastline. The Gold Coast had long been a name for the … [Click Below for Full Description]

BAUER, Johann Jacob
1770. Four vols. & three supplement vols. 8vo, cont. marbled boards (extremities a little worn), orange vellum lettering pieces on spines. Nuremberg: M.J. Bauer, 1770-71-71-72-74-74-91.First edition of this bibliographical catalogue of rare books, compiled by Bauer (1706-72), a bookseller in Nuremberg. It has many of the characteristics of the other such German compilations of the 18th century: it is arranged alphabetically with a prefatory discussion on the nature and causes of rarity in books and lists primarily Protestant theology, the Greek and Latin classics, a good selection of historical and geographical writings, and, except for books in Italian, a rather small proportion of belles-lettres.Petzholdt (p. 114), as always, has a complaint: in this book the author uses "rarus, rarissimus, albo corvo rarior, infrequentissimus, paucissimis incognitus" too frequently. As a fellow bookseller, I forgive our author (and the odds are he knew what he was talking about). Approximately 20,000 titles are described.Very good set. Gift bookplate of Robert Mason to Queen's College, Oxford with their release stamp.❧ Besterman 909. Taylor, Catalogues of Rare Books, p. 53.

Cristoforo Dall'Acqua
Acquaforte e bulino, 1770 circa, firmata in basso a destra "Cristoforo Dall’Acqua Vicentino Disegnò, e Incise". [Click Below for Full Description]

ANFRAY (Jean-François).
Rennes, Ollivault, [circa 1770].
