Anno 1760

In Lisbona: Nella Stamperia Reale 4to (20.5 cm; 8"). xix, [1], 167, [1] pp.. 1770 Translation of "Parte primera: El reyno jesuitico del Paraguay," originally published in vol. IV of the Coleccion general de documentos (Madrid: Imprenta real de la Gaceta, 1768–70).It is a vitriolic anti-Jesuit diatribe by a man who had been expelled from the Society of Jesus, not once, but twice! A definite "other side of the coin" from Father Lozano's account of the Jesuits in Paraguay, and originally written in Spanish, Ibanez's work proved popular and by 1774 had appeared in German, French, and this Italian translation. Of course, at that time the Jesuits were hot news, having been expelled in 1767 from the Spanish empire and made to find refuge in Italy and elsewhere. Some copies have a frontispiece but not this one. Of the nine copies we trace to U.S. libraries, we know that at least two lack the frontispiece, but others may also. We have checked the OPAC records for the other seven but because all seven are clearly copy cataloguing we have to wonder about their accuracy.Binding: 20th-century half dark green crushed morocco with marbled paper sides in a swirl pattern and top edge gilt, signed "Alfred Farez" who was active 1909 to ca. 1930. Unidentified owner's gilt monogram at base of spine. Binding signed "Alfred Farez" who was active 1909 to ca. 1930. Bound as above with old "wall paper" wrappers bound in. Title-page with a very little light soiling and one other leaf with a single spot likewise light; text notably clean and with good margins. A very good copy.

Typis Johannis Baskerville (John Baskerville), Birminghamiae (Birmingham) 1770, in-4 (22x29cm), (1p. tit) 344pp., relié. - Edition illustrated with a frontispiece engraved by Henriquez, a title label engraved by Le Grand and four figures Plover, engraved by Laine, Leveau, Le Vasseur and Godfrey; absent Cohen. Contemporary binding in full red morocco, back with five nerves richly decorated with gilded finials and nets, as part of Havana morocco, triple net gilded framing dishes, double net gilded on the cuts, golden lace coaching contreplats All edges gilt. Bookplates in the form of an acrostic on the back of the first guard. Some very tiny friction on bookbinding and some spots on the edges like the other best, if not beautiful book.

n.p., circa 1770 - Duodecimo, 72 pp., drop-title only, as published with no separate title-page and no colophon; very good, in modern boards, morocco label. A very good copy of this uncommon title by the fiery Comte de Lauraguais, best known for his association with Sir Joseph Banks, and particularly for his abortive attempt to publish a narrative by Banks of the Endeavour voyage. The pamphlet dates from the period just before Lauraguais fled to sanctuary in London, where he would pursue his acquaintance with Banks and ultimately attempt to publish his friend's letter on the Cook voyage.Lauraguais (1733-1824) had published his Mémoire sur la Compagnie des Indes in 1770, and it had been the subject of some strong attacks by figures such as the economist Morellet. Here, the Dupont of the title is actually one of Morellet's closest allies, Pierre Samuel du Pont de Nemours, the French economist whose children established the famous chemical company Dupont in the United States. Dupont was himself the protégé of François Quesnay, and formed part of a group dedicated to economic and cultural reforms. The Compagnie des Indes (or French East India Company) had been disbanded amid great controversy in 1769, and naturally became the subject of strong polemics by many influential French writers, especially after Louis XVI decreed that the properties and assets of the Company should be transferred to the state. Both Dupont and Lauraguais had already published strongly-worded essays on the subject, and as this pamphlet confirms, they didn't see eye-to-eye on the subject. As a result, this pamphlet is a violent attack against Dupont de Nemours: indeed, Lauraguais's outbursts on the Compagnie des Indes at this time were one of the main reasons he went into self-imposed exile in England in 1771.Lauraguais was notoriously quick to print, but despite his rather voluminous output, all of his pamphlets and books are quite scarce. This pamphlet is certainly very rare, and although noted in Barbier's bibliography it is not widely known. Copies are scarce in international collections, although the works collates identically with a copy in the Bibliothèque National de France. Barbier, 1187. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Tabulae Motuum Solis et Lunae novae et correctae auctore Tobia Mayer: quibis accredit methodus longitudinum promota, eodem auctore

London: William and John Richardson for Nourse, Mount and Page, 1770. Quarto, two separately paginated parts bound together with the errata leaves and two engraved folding plates; title-page a little toned, some offsetting affects one of the plates, a few old stamps (see below); very good in recent quarter mottled calf with gilt lettering, accompanied by an old manuscript leaf of calculations. The first complete and accurate publication of lunar and solar positions, a milestone in the history of the longitude problem. This book is the work of German cartographer Tobias Mayer, who in the process of reconciling land maps experienced similar challenges to a mariner in calculating accurate longitude. 'Mayer had to rely on the moon for fixed positions in time and space, just as a sailor would. And in the course of meeting his own needs for predicting the lunar position, he grasped an advance that applied directly to the longitude problem; he created the first set of lunar tables for the moon's location at twelve hour intervals' (Sobel, Longitude, p.97). Mayer's great contribution lay in his skilful use and co-ordination of pre-existing data, rather than novel thinking or deployment of advanced astronomical equipment. Accurate and comprehensive, Mayer's results appealed to those who used the lunar method to reckon the longitude (most significantly the Astronomer Royal Nevil Maskelyne). Unfortunately his untimely decease in 1762 prevented Mayer claiming the enormous longitude prize promised by Parliament in 1713. Nonetheless his widow was awarded £3000 the following year and Mayer's tables were distributed by the Admiralty for use at sea. Maskelyne championed Mayer's case, having used his tables during the experimental voyage to St. Helena in 1761, and assiduously prepared them for publication in this book.Mayer's tables formed the basis for the lunar and solar ephemerides published in early editions of the Nautical Almanac, although by 1780 they were effectively superseded by more accurate measurements collected at the Greenwich Royal Observatory. This copy has a prestigious provenance, the title page bearing nineteenth-century blind and ink stamps of the Princeton University observatory library. It was later in the collection of Frank Streeter, with his bookplate. Norman 1468; Sotheran I, 2934-5.

Histoire critique de Jésus-Christ, ou, Analyse raisonnée des Evangiles (A Critical History of Jesus Christ, or, an Analysis by Reason of the Evangelists).

No Publisher [Marc-Michel Rey] No Date [1770], No City [Amsterdam] - TP + III-VIII = Epître a Uranie + [I]-XXXII = Preface + [1]-[400], small Octavo. First Edition (Vercruysse 1770, A-4).Holbach's All-Out Assault on the Christian GospelsThis is the last of five works listed by the Encyclopedia of Philosophy as being important to Holbach's "second phase" of writing activity which consisted of a relentless militancy against organized religion in general and the Catholic Church in particular. "The theme recurring throughout these books represented a vehement restatement of almost all the arguments for unbelief current in eighteenth-century France. The most characteristic are the following: The idea and cult of God sprang from the ignorant terror of primitive man seeking to placate the destructive powers of nature, and they have survived ever since through superstition; religious history is a catalogue of senseless disputes, intolerance, prejudice, persecution and crime; the clergy is ordinarily engaged in exploiting the gullibility of the people for its own profit; religions have invariably support tyrannical governments to further their own ambitions of domination; Scriptural 'proofs' of Christianity are worthless as objective historical evidence; theological dogmas are a maze of delusion and mystification on which no rational, just of useful social institution can be built." (Encyclopedia of Philosophy, vol. IV, pp.49-50) an old, multi-colored paper cover with a floral design. The paper has the pattern and impression showing through on the back side and it looks very much like a piece of wallpaper. The title page is browned along the right edge suggesting that the book at one time had another cover. There is a small part of title page missing along the upper, inside gutter (no loss of text). Someone has written in pencil in a European hand "1872" at the very bottom of the title page. Completely uncut. Despite the rather garish wraps, this is a very nice copy of this revolutionary Enlightenment work. ADDITIONAL PHOTOS AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST. [Attributes: First Edition]

[Marc Michel Rey], Londres [Amsterdam] 1770, 2 tomes en 2 Vol. in 8 (11,5x19,5cm), (12) 366pp. et (6) 408pp., relié. - Rare first edition second issue, either with the corrected mistakes, and therefore without the errata sheets. This edition is described by Tchemerzine. Full brown calf marbled time. A little lack of Volume I. head head cover of Volume II threadbare. Split bits in head and tail tome II. A dull corner in Volume II. Speckles on the title page of Volume I. Traces of dry old foxing, and sometimes humidity (low margin area) in two volumes, with no gravity. Good general appearance. The most famous work of the author (who is finally assigned to his death), bible materialism, and certainly one of the most iconic works of the Enlightenment. Ideas of Baron d'Holbach are not new, and draws its material cheerfully Hobbes, La Mettrie, Diderot and Helvetius, but he built a new conceptual: to become free, man must overcome prejudices and based on empiricism and materialism, ie the same nature, and therefore reject any religious thought. It is this open and assertive atheism and anti-clericalism which earned the publication of the book the sentence be slashed and burned demonstration. We now know that Diderot was associated with the project and wrote the last chapter of the abstract code of nature. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. Contact us for any information!

      I. De origine Ungrorum II. De origine Tatarorum III. De diversis Shinarum imperatoris nominibus titulisque IV. De Hyperboreis. Edidit Aug. Ludovicus Schloezer. Göttingen & Gotha, impensis Dieterichianis, 1770. 8:o. (8),119 s. Häftad i samtida gråpappersomslag.

William Emerson (14 May 1701 - 20 May 1782), English mathematician, was born at Hurworth, near Darlington, where his father, Dudley Emerson, also a mathematician, taught a school. Unsuccessful as a teacher, he devoted himself entirely to studious retirement, and published many works which are singularly free from errata. In mechanics he never advanced a proposition which he had not previously tested in practice, nor published an invention without first proving its effects by a model. He was skilled in the science of music, the theory of sounds, and the ancient and modern scales; but he never attained any excellence as a performer. He died on 20 May 1782 at his native village.

1770 - A striking colonial manuscript chart of Maracaibo, signed by Emasabel. c.1770. [Maracaibo]. Manuscript chart executed in pen, ink and coloured washes. Backed on linen, old folds now strengthened, captioning, index and title clearly legible and the colouring still very fresh, a few pieces missing at folds, but overall fine. It is, nonetheless, a handsome map. 498 mm x 395 mm. A rare 18th century chart of northern Venezuela focused on the Maracaibo Lake. The cartographer signs the map as “Delineado por D. Xavier de Emasabel. Piloto de Altura año de 1770.” The map depicts the bay of Maracaibo in northwest Venezuela just to the north of Lake Maracaibo. It notes the cities of Maracaibo, and Altagracia. The cartouche includes an extensive numbered key to the most significant geographical points in the region (26 numbers). The key allows us a glimpse of what Maracaibo looked like, and its presumable -for the considerable detail and information it presents-, that the author was allowed and made use of the most up-to-date sources of information and geographical exploration of the region. We have been unable to find much information on Emasabel, however, at the Woodbury Lowery collection (Library of Congress, Geography and Map Division) there is a map, also by him, entitled “Carta Ydrografica que contiene desde el cabo de Nazao y Rio Elquibo en la costa de Surinam hasta el cabo de Carlos en Virginia. Yncluiendo en ella las Yslas de Barlovento, de sotavento, las Lucayas y demas aderentes, a todas las costas, sus trabesias y Yslas de Puerto Rico, Santo Domingo, la de Cuba y Jamayca” and it is signed by Francisco Xavier de Emasabel, declaring himself “Piloto maior del Comercio de Cadiz”. In the “Extractos de las juntas generales celebradas por la Real Sociedad Bascongada de los Amigos del Pais en la villa de Bilbao por Julio de 1787” there is reference to a Francisco Emasabel “Capitan del puerto de Deva ofreció tres mapas marítimas que trabajó á instancia de los Pilotos del comercio de Cádiz”. Surviving colonial manuscript charts of South America are only seldom found in the market.

A compilation of very rare editions of 18th-century libretti and "airs," including Rousseau's influential Le Devin du Village. "RousseauÂ’s first operatic success came in October 1752, with Le devin du village, first performed at Fontainebleau before the court and taken up again soon afterwards by the Académie Royale de Musique (March 1753). It is a relatively short work, with only three characters: Colin, Colette and the Soothsayer (‘Le devinÂ’), and though based on the Italian intermezzo, it merits the designation opera from the fact that it is entirely sung, with recitative over a continuo bass and songs accompanied by the violin, flute and oboe. It achieved instant success and stayed in the OpéraÂ’s repertory for 60 years." Catherine Kintzler in Grove Music Online.

Veduta degli Avanzi del Castro Pretorio nella Villa Adriana a Tivoli. (View of the Remains of the Praetorian Fort [the Poecile], Hadrian's Villa, Tivoli).

. Copperprint. Rome 1770. 65x37 cm. Printed on strong paper with the watermark fleur - des - lis. * When Piranesi arrived in Rome in the year 1740 he was instantly impressed by the splendour of the antique ruins in the ancient city. For almost a year he was an apprentice in the studio of Guiseppe Vasi, his later colleague and rival, where he learned the art of engraving copper plates. He began his extremely successful career depicting Rome's architectural gems (antique and contemporary) on extra large-scale single sheets: the famous "Vedute di Roma" (Views of Rome). Piranesi was an obsessed artist. Relentlessly he added plates, sometimes variations of former ones, to the collection, until, at the end of his life, there was a total of 135 views showing the majesty and the splendour of the once powerful capital of the Roman empire.
