Edited by William Moore, the Whisperer was a radical anti-goverment periodical that at times verged on republicanism. In no. V, ?The cries of liberty for a redress of grievances? Moore writes: ?The K[ing] a tool of state, The government arrbitrary, The c[row]n insolvent - Elective.? With his virulent attacks on George III and the House of Hanover, Moore was also accused of Jacobite sympathies; Charles Edward Stuart, it was said, was a regular reader. But as Monod writes, Moore was less of a Republican or Jacobite and more of a renegade radical who sought a just government for the people. ?Oppression has succeeded oppression, . it is despotism in the P[eopl]e; and a perseverance in this resolution . may perhaps oblige the brave and much injured people of this island to seek that redress with their own hands which their ungrateful monarch has denied them.?         [View in Wales]

1770. Hand-coloured engraving. Trimmed as usual and mounted on washline background. Mounting sheet is watermarked laid paper. Image size: 14 1/8 x 20 1/8 inches. A wonderful romantic view in the grand tradition of the picturesque English landscape. Towards the middle of the eighteenth century a trend developed amongst English artists and printmakers, which sought to visually record the natural beauties of England and Wales. Sparked by a sense of national confidence and patriotism, English printmakers began to publish topographical prints of the important sights in the British Isles. In addition to being a visual record of the countryside, they were meant to encourage public recognition of the beauty and history of England. They were aimed at English and foreign tourists who desired a memento of their travels, or at those vicarious tourists who collected topographical prints instead of traveling. This is a wonderful example of a picturesque eighteenth century landscape print. By trimming the image within the platemark and mounting it on a decorative washline background the print has the effect of a landscape painting. The likeness is heightened by the addition of added body colour in the image and the use of a heavy painterly technique of engraving. This practice was common amongst engravers and printsellers who wished to capitalize on this trend for picturesque landscapes of the English countryside. This print is from the famed Oettingen-Wallerstein collection, which was compiled over two centuries by various members of the royal household. The collection is known for its stunning impressions and the immaculate condition of its prints. Clayton, The English Print 1688-1802 p. 155; Lugt, Les Marques de Collections , (Supplement) 2715a.

[Working Proof of a Country Cottage]

1770. Etching and engraving. Unfinished working proof. In fair condition with the exception of being trimmed within the platemark. Laid onto contemporary backing card. Tear along middle of image which has been expertly repaired. Some creases in image. A rare working proof by John Browne, the celebrated English landscape engraver. One of the most esteemed English landscape engravers, John Browne was born in Finchfield Essex, in 1741. In 1756 he was apprenticed to the engraver John Tinney, but then went to work for the influential landscape engraver William Woollett. It is believed that many of Woollett's most admired plates were in fact engraved by Browne. He devoted himself entirely to engraving landscape and genre scenes in particular after works by the French and Dutch masters. In 1770 he was elected an associate engraver of the Royal Academy, exhibiting thirteen plates between 1767 and 1801. This stunning genre scene is a wonderful example of his skilled hand and a rare working proof. This intriguing print shows a unique step in the printmaking process before an image is ready for publication. Before the image is completed, the engraver has printed a trial impression to view this stage of the engraved plate. It is incredibly rare to find prints in this unfinished experimental stage; impressions which were pulled as working proofs are unique and were almost never duplicated.         Commentaries on the Laws of England

Oxford: Printed at the Clarendon Press, 1770. 4 volumes, quarto. (10 1/2 x 8 inches). Final blank in vol.I. 2 engraved plates (1 folding). (Light worming to fore-edge margin of the first half of vol.II, and the first and last few leaves of vol.III). Contemporary calf, covers simply tooled in blind, red morocco lettering-pieces to spines lettered in gilt Provenance: Richard Cope Hopton (Canon Frome Court, Ledbury, Hereford, early armorial bookplate). Fourth edition: a fine unsophisticated set of this early edition of the single most important work on English law. A work which had an undeniable influence on the course of jurisprudence in the United States. "Blackstone's great work on the laws of England [first published in 1765-1769] is the extreme example of justification of an existing state of affairs by virtue of its history....Until the Commentaries , the ordinary Englishman had viewed the law as a vast, unintelligible and unfriendly machine; nothing but trouble, even danger, was to be expected from contact with it. Blackstone's great achievement was to popularize the law and the traditions which had influenced its formation....If the English constitution survived the troubles of the next century, it was because the law had gained a new popular respect, and this was due in part to the enormous success of Blackstone's work" ( Printing and the Mind of Man ). A measure of this success can be gained from the fact that the Commentaries were reprinted a dozen times in England over the ensuing two decades, and translated into French, German, Italian, and Russian. Robert Bell produced the first American edition in Philadelphia in 1771-1772. Cf. Grolier Club English 52; cf. Printing and the Mind of Man 212; cf. Rothschild 407.

Trinity Harbour / Carboniere and Harbour Grace / St. John's Harbour / Cape Broyle Harbour ...[published in: The North-American Pilot for Newfoundland, Labradore, the Gulf and River St.Laurence: being a collection of sixty accurate charts and plans, drawn from original surveys: taken by James Cook and Michael Lane, Surveyors, and Joseph Gilbert, and other officers in the King's service]

London: Robert Sayer & John Bennett, 1770. Copper engraving with four maps on one single-page sheet (plate area: 15 x 11 1/2 inches). Good condition, old horizontal fold. A spectacular chart from the survey which laid the foundation upon which Captain Cook's reputation as a surveyor and navigator rested. At the conclusion of the French and Indian War, the British needed accurate charts of the territories that had been awarded to them in the Treaty of Paris. The areas that were of particular interest to the Admiralty included Labrador and Newfoundland. "On 19 April 1763 James Cook, Master R.N.. was ordered by the Admiralty to proceed to Newfoundland 'in order to your taking a survey of the Parts of the Coasts and Harbours of that Island'" (Tooley & Skelton, in Tooley's The Mapping of America p.177). His appointment would have been based, in no small part, on the glowing endorsment of his commanding officer, who had written to the Admiralty in December 1762 "that from my experience of Mr. Cook's genius and capacity, I think him well fitted for the work he has undertaken, and for greater undertakings of the same kind". "The charting of Newfoundland and southern Labrador by Cook... and by his successor Michael Lane ... was unequalled, for thoroughness and method, by any previous hydrographic work by Englishmen [and also allowed Cook to master the art of practical surveying and navigation, in a way that brought him to the attention of the Admiralty and Royal Society at a crucial moment. More immediately.] it produced the first charts of this extensive and difficult coastline that could (in the words of a later hydrographer) 'with any degree of safety be trusted by the seaman'" (Tooley & Skelton op. cit.). Cook started by surveying the northwest stretch of coastline in 1763 and 1764, then in 1765 and 1766 the south coast between Cape Ray and the Burin Peninsula, and in 1767 the west coast. His work was interrupted by what was to prove to be the first of his three great voyages to the Pacific, and the work on Newfoundland and southern Labrador was finished by Michael Lane between 1768 and 1773. Thomas Jefferys used the charts by Cook and others to form the "Collection of Charts of 1769-70, a prototype ... for the celebrated North-American Pilot which was to be published in five English editions from 1775 to 1806" (Tooley & Skelton op,cit.). The present example is from Sayer and Bennett's 1775 edition (Tooley & Skelton's # 13). Skelton & Tooley, "The Marine Surveys of James Cook in North America" 13.IV in Tooley, The Mapping of America.

[Jacob's Ladder] Vidit Jacob in somnis scalam stantem super terram, et cacumen illius tangens Coelum: Angelos ascendentes et descendentes: et Dnum innixum scalæ

Rome, 1770. Copper engraving, on two joined sheets, by Ottaviani after drawings by Savorelli and Camporesi, printed in light brown coloured ink with contemporary hand-colouring. Neat marginal restoration. A stunning plate from "Logge di Rafaele nel Vaticano": with contemporary colouring of the highest quality from the golden age of the hand-coloured print. The main panel shows Jacob at Luza having a vision of the angels ascending and descending by a ladder which reached from earth to heaven. A very fine image from the second part of a work titled "Loggie di Rafaele nel Vaticano" depicting the decorative work executed by Raphael and his assistants between 1518-1519 in the Vatican. They were drawn by Gaetano Savorelli, a Roman painter and draughtsman best known for his Raphael drawings, and Pietro Camporesi, a Roman architect, who worked for Pope Clemens XIII and Pius VI on rooms for the Vatican Museum. The first to illustrate the famous frescoes, these beautiful plates were probably planned as early as 1760, but were not executed until 1772 to 1776. The plate is remarkable not only as the first important visual record of Raphael's work, but also for the quality of the hand-colouring - the work on this image is, in our opinion, some of the greatest to be produced in Europe during the whole of the eighteenth century: the golden age of the hand-coloured print. They were remarkable not just for their size and magnificent colouring, but also because of the influence they had on contemporary taste. The decision was made to "borrow" elements from Raphael's Vatican tapestries and insert them where the original frescoes were in too poor a state to be legible. The finished plates therefore represented an amalgam of design elements presented with a crisp freshness of colour that held enormous appeal and did much to stimulate the taste for the "grotesque" in the Neo-classical period. A year after the death of his principal patron Julius II, Raphael succeeded Donato Bramante in 1514 as the official Vatican architect. Having previously adorned the "Stanze" or chambers of Julius on the second floor of the papal apartments in the Vatican palace, he was commissioned by Leo X in 1517 to decorate the adjacent Logge. He designed an elaborate cycle of ornamental frescoes for the room's ceiling vaults, doors and auxiliary pillars, which were executed by his assistants Giulio Romano and Giovanni da Udine. Twelve of the quadrilateral ceiling vaults were adorned with murals of familiar Old Testament scenes and one with a scene from the New Testament, while the more decorative frescoes painted on the pilasters by Udine were covered with imaginative compositions of 'grotesque' motifs like foliage, fruit, and chimerical beasts.         AUSTRALIA – EAST COAST – NEW SOUTH WALES / QUEENSLAND: CARTE DE LA NLE. GALLES MERID. OU DE LA COTE ORIENTALE DE LA NLE. HOLLANDE DECOUVERTE ET VISITEE PAR LE LIEUTENANT J. COOK COMMANDANT DE L'ENDEAVOUR, VAISSEAU DE SA MAJESTE EN 1770.

      - The first French edition of the first published map of the East Coast of Australia, by Captain James Cook. - This fascinating sea chart is the first French edition of the first map of the East Coast of Australia (New South Wales and Queensland), issued in 1774, only a year after the first (British) edition of the map. It captures almost the entire eastern seaboard of Australia, from Point Hicks (Victoria), in the south, all the way up north to Cape York (Queensland), bordering the Torres Strait. The chart follows the observations made by Captain James Cook during the epic first-ever European navigation of the East Coast of Australia in 1770, taken during his First Voyage to the Pacific (1768-71). Most major bays and headlands are depicted, along with suggested anchorages and hazards, while some major onshore landmarks are featured on shore. The track of Cook’s ship, the HMS Endeavour, which sailed south to north along the coast from April to August 1770, is delineated. Key points are marked, some with explanatory annotations, along the way, including: Cape Howe (marking the modern Victoria-New South Wales boundary); Botany Bay (an important harbour, just south of modern Sydney); Port Jackson (Sydney Harbour); ‘Baye Morton’ (Moreton Bay, the entrance to Brisbane harbor); Cape Tribulation, near where the HMS Endeavour was almost destroyed on the Great Barrier Reef (N.B.: the gap in the mapping beyond, between Cape Flattery and Cape Weymouth, is due to the fact that Cook sailed further out to sea to avoid the reefs, so forsaking coastal observations); and Cape York (the nothernmost mainland point of Queensland). Cook and his colleagues’ encounter with the East Coast of Australia brought the region to European consciousness for the first time, and led the foundation of the first European colony in Australia, at Port Jackson (Sydney), on January 26, 1788 (Australia’s Nation Day!). The present chart was issued within the first French edition of the official account of Cook’s voyages, John Hawkesorth’s (ed.) Relation des Voyages Entrepris pas Ordre de Sa Majesté Britannique (Paris: Saillant, Nyon & Panckouke, 1774). The French edition is entirely faithful to the first edition which was printed under the title A Chart of New South Wales or the East Coast of New Holland, Discovered and Explored by Lieutenant J.Cook, Commander of his Majesty's Bark Endeavour, in the Year MDCCLXX, and was included with the first edition of the official account of Cook’s voyage, John Hawkesworth’s (ed.), An Account of the Voyages for making Discoveries in the Southern Hemisphere (London: Strahan & Cadell, 1773). Cook’s original manuscript charts of the East Coast of Australia are today preserved at the National Archives U.K. (having been recently transferred from the U.K. Hydrographic Office in Taunton). Cook’s chart is a foundational map of any collection of Australian cartography. References: Tooley, The Mapping of Australia, no. 342.

An Arabian belonging to John Warde Esq'.

Publish'd as the Act directs Nov. 24 by W.W. Ryland in Cornhiil 1770. 253 x 357. LENNOX-BOYD 'George Stubbs the Complete Engraved Work' 22. SILTZER 'British Sporting Prints' 1929. p.270. LANE. British Racing Prints 1700-1940. p.169 UNRECORDED STATE - Mezzotint, tipped onto backing sheet by corners, The discovery of this hitherto unknown state clears up much confusion and speculation on when the print was first printed. It has traditionally been grouped with three other prints of stallions published in 1771 by William Wynne Ryland (Lennox Boyd Nos. 19, 20 & 21). The previously earliest known impression of 'An Arabian belonging to John Warde' was published by Sayer & Bennett in 1777. Lennox Boyd, postulated by comparison with the other Ryland prints, that there were likely to have been two earlier states. including one published in February 1771. It is now clear that there was an even earlier edition published by Ryland in 1770. Although the state offered here has a publisher's imprint, later states evidently had much further work done by the engraver, providing more detail to the sky, the trees in the background, the plants and tree in the foreground and to the horse itself. The painting on which this print was based was commissioned by John Warde [1721-1775] of Squerryes Court near Westerham, Kent, and is still with the family. The horse was imported from Alexandretta in Turkey in 1762. Stubbs produced an etching himself of this painting (Lennox Boyd 17).

RUSSO-TURKISH WARS: BATTLE OF CHESMA, TURKEY (1770): Beschreibung welche die attaque der Russischen mit der Türkischen Flotte vom 24. Jun.: 1770 bey Cismin vorstellet / Vue de la Bataille Navale des flottes Russes et Turques prés de Cismin de 24. Juin: 17.

      - This rare and highly attractive separately-issued map depicts the action of the Battle of Chesma (1770), a momentous victory by the Russian Navy over the maritime forces of the Ottoman Empire. The battle marked a turning point in that it hailed the fall of Turkish maritime hegemony over the Aegean and the Black seas and the rise of the Russia as an international naval power. The battle was one of the two greatest events of the Russo-Turkish War of 1768 – 1774, a critical conflict that gave Russia control of the Crimea and parts of the Caucuses. The Battle of Chesma was fought off of the Turkish port of Çe?me (Chesme or Chesma, in the upper right of the map), which is located along the far western shores of Anatolia, opposite the island of Chios (located in the lower part of the map). On June 24 1770, a Russian fleet under Admiral Count Alexei Grigoryevich Orlov, consisting of 9 ships of the line and several support vessels, closed in on a Turkish fleet, commanded by Mandalzade Husamaddin Pasha, consisting of 16 ships of the line and several support craft. The 9 Russian ships are identified in the map’s explanation, as is noted the Ottoman flagship (the Real Mustafa with 84 guns), as well as the Turkish shore batteries. As shown on the map, the Russian fleet first formed a line that prevented the larger but unprepared Turkish fleet from fleeing the scene. While eyewitnesses later clamed that the Russian lines where in reality not that well disciplined, they held the advantage of the wind. The Ottomans opened fire first and vicious dogfights ensued. The Russian ship Sv. Evstafii faced the Real Mustafa and was blown up in the process. By July 6, the wary Ottoman fleet retreated to the supposed safely of the Bay of Chesma. This proved to be a mistake, as the port’s defenses were not adequate to stave off a Russian assault, leaving the Turkish vessels as sitting ducks. The Russian fleet moved in for the kill and began bombarding the Ottoman fleet and the town. The Russians cleverly used fire ships, unmanned boats rigged with explosives, to destroy the sedentary Turkish vessels. Before long most of the Ottoman fleet was on fire or had exploded, leaving the remaining vessels to be captured. The battle was a complete route for the Ottomans, and it proved to be their worst naval defeat since the Battle of Lepanto in 1571. Curiously, the tactics employed by the Russians prefigured Admiral Lord Nelson’s moves used during his stunning victory over the French at the Battle of the Nile (1798), fought near Alexandria, Egypt. The Battle of Chesma occurred within the context of the Russo-Turkish War of 1768 - 1774. The war was the latest in a series of conflicts between the Ottoman Empire and Russia, which revolved around control of what is now the Ukraine. The last major contest between the Ottomans and Russia was the indecisive Russo-Turkish War of 1736-9, during which the Russians captured much of the Crimea and southern Ukraine, but inevitably failed to hold the territory due to inadequate supply lines. The present war was seen as something of a rematch of this earlier conflict. When Turkey and Russia went to war in 1768, on paper the Turkish side seemed to be the stronger party. Russia had been drained by its unsuccessful role in the Seven Years’ War (1756-63) and her ruler, Catherine the Great (reigned 1762-1796), was considered to be untested in major foreign conflicts. Russia’s Navy was small and poorly equipped and it would seem that Russia was destined to suffer the same sort of logistical breakdown that doomed her earlier campaigns against the Turks. On the other side, Turkey had much larger land and naval forces, all of which very much in tact since the Ottomans had not fought a major foreign war since 1747. However, the Russians had recently recruited Dutch and British veteran officers to advise her navy, including Captain Jan Hendrik van Kinsbergen (who in 1773 conducted the first scientific mapping of the Crimea) and Admiral Joh

Anas Cygnus (Wild Swan) Nederlandsche Vogelen.

Amsterdam:: J.C. Sepp,, 1770-1829.. First edition. Archivally Framed. Fine with original hand-coloring/ . An elegant and original hand-colored copperplate engraving by Jan Christiaan Sepp, in fine condition with fine contemporary (period) hand coloring. Laid paper watermarked J. Honig & Zoon. Folio. 37.5 x 54 cm, 14.75 x 21.25 inches. PM: 35.86 x 50.16 cm, 14 1/8 x 19 3/4 inches. Cornelis Nozeman, (1721-1786) a Dutch clergyman passionately interested in ornithology, created what has become recognized as the finest and most comprehensive ornithological work of eighteenth century Netherlands: Nederlandsche Vogelen. This lavish and costly production was the first to document the avifauna of the Netherlands- territory which at the time included Belgium. Gloriously illustrated with 250 elegantly hand-colored copperplate engravings by Jan Christiaan Sepp (1739-1811), the 5 volume work was completed in parts and published by naturalists Martinus Houttuyn, and subsequently C.J. Temminck after the deaths of Nozeman and Sepp. Notwithstanding the absence of high realism, the merit of this work lies in the understated elegance of the compositions. As stated by Sacheverell Sitwell in his Fine Bird Books: "It is a work of "Confucian" Holland when the Dutch, like flies in amber, lived in a provincial vacuum and were left over from another age." Elegant, ornamental and refined, a fabulous composition from the definitive work on the avifauna of eighteenth century Holland. Nissen IVB 684; Anker 369; Ayer/Zimmer, p. 469; Fine Bird Books 98

[Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

TO THE PUBLIC. FEW ARE IGNORANT, THAT THE ASSEMBLYMEN OF THIS COLONY, WHERE ANCIENTLY INDUCED TO CONSENT TO TAX THE FOUR COUNTIES...[caption title]. [with, printed on verso:] AN ACT TO EXEMPT THE INHABITANTS OF THE COUNTIES OF WEST-CHESTER, NEW-YORK, QUEEN'S AND RICHMOND, FROM ANY TAXATIONS FOR THE SUPPORT OF THE MINISTERS OF CHURCHES TO WHICH THEY DO NOT BELONG [caption title]

[New York, 1770. Broadsheet, 16 x 10 inches. Old folds, with some separation and minor loss; repaired with tissue on verso at one fold. Minor soiling. Good. One of the hot-button issues of the period just prior to the Revolution was the movement to establish the Anglican Church in America, as it was in Ireland. This was proposed and seriously debated in Virginia, but most heatedly in New York, where it was a bigger issue than any stamp or excise taxes. This broadsheet, printed by Revolutionary printer John Holt, relates the circumstances of a bill under discussion in the provincial legislature which would exempt residents of four counties in New York from paying taxes to support the Anglican clergy, and discusses the back door transactions surrounding it. The first side explains the progress of the bill through the legislature, while the verso gives a "true copy" of the act. Only four copies in ESTC, at the American Antiquarian Society, John Carter Brown Library, New-York Historical, and the New York Public Library.

FALKLAND ISLANDS: BOWLES’S NEW ONE-SHEET DRAUGHT OF FALKLAND’S ISLANDS IN THE LATITUDE OF 51° 22' SOUTH, LONGITUDE 64° 30' WEST; FROM LONDON.

      - This excellent folio-sized map represents the first accurate geographical conception of the Falkland Islands, which have since the 1760s been a lightening rod for political intrigue and dramatic action. While not all aspects of the island’s incredibly intricate and rocky coastlines are precisely delineated, the map grants an impressively accurate impression, with many bays, inlets and headlands labeled. The islands’ two settlements as they stood circa 1770 are depicted: Port Egmont (British), located on Saunders’s Island, in the northwest; and Port Louis (French), located on the east coast of East Falkland. Most interestingly, the tracks of the two ships under the command of Captain James MacBride, R.N., the surveyor responsible for the present map are delineated. As shown, in 1766, the HMS Jason circumnavigated the Falklands, while the HMS Carcass made a detailed reconnaissance of the islands’ northern and central coasts. The map is beautifully embellished with 9 coastal approach views. Historical Context While remote and windswept, the Falkland Islands have had an outsized role in global politics since the 1760s. It is unclear which European first spotted the hitherto uninhabited islands, located 480 kilometres off of the coast of Patagonia. However, an Englishman, Captain John Strong, is the first to have been confirmed to have landed on the islands, in 1690, naming them for the Viscount of Falkland, the Treasurer of the Royal Navy. In 1764, the famed French explorer Louis-Antoine de Bougainville founded the first settlement, Port Louis, populated by colonists from St. Malo, Brittany, giving the islands the name French Îles Malouines (which led to the Spanish name for the islands, Las Malvinas). In 1765, the British officer Captain John ‘Foul Weather Jack’ Byron arrived and clamed the islands for Britain, not knowing of the existence of Port Louis. In 1766, The British dispatched Captain John MacBride (c. 1735 -1800), aboard the HMS Jason, accompanied by the HMS Carcass, to found a settlement in the Falklands, so to anchor Britannia’s claim. MacBride successfully established Port Egmont that year and oversaw the first proper survey of the islands. MacBride made a manuscript chart, on which Carington Bowles I based the present map, and additionally published an account of his mission to the islands, A Journal of the Winds and Weather.at Falkland Islands from 1 February 1766 to 19 January 1767 (London, n.d., but 1767-70). Meanwhile, in 1766, France sold its stake in the Falklands to its old ally Spain. Spain renamed Port Louis as Puerto Soledad, and embarked upon an aggressive policy towards British interests on the islands. In 1770, the regional Spanish commander rashly dispatched a naval force that successfully destroyed Port Egmont. This enraged London, and for some months in 1770 and 1771, Spain and Britain were on the verge of war. While war was narrowly avoided, and Port Egmont restored to its founders, Britain decided to abandon their settlement in 1776, due to cost-saving measures owing to the American Revolution. The Spanish settlement remained until 1811, but was itself abandoned due to the advent of the Argentine War of Independence. The British were the first to reestablish a permanent settlement on the Falklands in 1833. The complex history of settlements and legal claims has ensured that the Falklands remained hotly contested real estate between Argentina and Britain ever since, tensions that climaxed during the 1982 Falklands War. The present edition of the map is the third edition of the work, and, while undated, is though to have been issued around 1800 by the partnership of (Henry) Carington Bowles II (1763 - c. 1830; son of Carington Bowles I) and Samuel Carver, which operated from 1793 to 1832 out of the established Bowles family premises at no. 69 St Paul's Churchyard, London. It employs the same plate as used by Carrington Bowles I to printed the first edition of the map, under the title A Draught of Fal

Nova mappa geographica Sueciae ac Gothiae regna ut et Finlandiae Ducatum ac Lapponiam

Augsburg, 1770. unbound. Map. Engraving with hand coloring. Image measures 19.5 x 22.5". This finely rendered map of Scandinavia includes Sweden, Finland, and Lapland. The vivid hand-coloring highlights, in reverse, the bodies of water that give the region its distinctive shape. The numerous coastal islands within these bodies of water are meticulously labeled, as are provinces, cities, and rivers on the mainland. The around around Stockholm, "the Venice of the North," is particularly detailed with all of its constituent islands. Two compass roses, one at the top and one at the bottom of the map, point in slightly different directions as to indicate the curvature of the Earth at this high latitude. The map is in good condition with slight chips to the upper and lower margins, not affecting the image. Otherwise a vibrant copy. Tobias Conrad Lotter was a German mapmaker based in Augsburg. His work dates to the revival of mapmaking in 18th century Germany that was spurred in large part by the work of Matthäus Seutter. Lotter, who married Seutter's daughter, worked on behalf of the Seutter firm as a master engraver and took over half of the printing house upon Seutter's death. His individual work, combined with his republication of Seutter's maps under his own imprint, allowed Lotter to match, if not surpass, his predecessor's reputation as one of the most prominent German cartographers of the period.

Fort George, N.Y., 1770. on folded letter sheet, docketed on verso, with integral blank leaf. Old folds, bit tanned. Small stain on first page. Overall quite good. Addressed to Sir William Johnson, superintendent of Indian Affairs. This letter concerns trade with the Indians and a July 10 meeting with commissioners from Canada as well as from the Colonies. After addressing some political and business matters, Colden writes in a postscript to Johnson: "The 10th of July is approved for the Commissioners of the several Colonies to meet at this place to construct a plan for regulating the Trade with the Indians, perhaps you may think it proper to be here at that time." Colden, scientist and philosopher, was one of the most brilliant leaders of colonial New York. His book, THE HISTORY OF THE FIVE NATIONS... (1727), is a classic account of American Indians during the colonial period.

A NEW UNIVERSAL COLLECTION OF AUTHENTIC AND ENTERTAINING VOYAGES AND TRAVELS, FROM THE EARLIEST ACCOUNTS TO THE PRESENT TIME. JUDICIOUSLY SELECTED FROM THE BEST WRITERS IN THE ENGLISH, FRENCH, SPANISH, ITALIAN, DUTCH, GERMAN, DANISH, AND OTHER LANGUAGES

London, 1770. Folio. Modern three-quarter calf and marbled boards, spine gilt, leather label. Light scattered foxing and soiling. Occasional offsetting. Closed tear repaired at edge of folding world map. Very good. "A collection of voyages and relations of experiences by travelers from the time of the Portuguese navigators to the middle of the eighteenth century, including those of Magellan, Drake, Cavendish, Olivier van Noort, William Dampier, Woodes Rogers, John Clipperton, George Anson, and Lionel Wafer" - Hill. This is the supposed third edition, after editions of 1768 and 1769, but the identical collation and variation in 1770 titlepages suggests that there is one printing of text with variant title leaves. ESTC lists two 1770 editions, the first with the titlepage in red and black, and the other printed in all black. This is the latter, of which the ESTC locates only one copy, in the Staatsbibliothek in Berlin.
