PROEFNEMINGEN EN MONSTER-BLADEN, OM PAPIER TE MAAKEN

Jan Christian Sepp, Amsterdam 1770 - 188 x 145 mm. (7 1/2 x 5 3/4"). [iv], 56, [2]; viii, 32 pp. Contemporary half calf over speckled tan paper boards, raised bands, compartments with gilt lettering and flower motifs. With frontispiece printed in blue, 33 leaves of paper specimens, and four hand-colored plates. Front free endpaper with a pencilled ownership inscription. Hunter, "Papermaking Through Eighteen Centuries," pp. 53-68. Significant general wear to the insubstantial original binding, but the book quite firm and still appealing because unrestored. Lower hinge separating, the occasional negligible chip or tear to the specimens (one of the hemp specimens with more noticeable open tears), faint offsetting to the front endpapers (from a laid-in piece of paper), but overall A SURPRISINGLY NICE COPY of a book one would expect to find in terrible shape, the contents very clean and the specimens remarkably well preserved, given the materials involved. This is an extremely rare and highly inventive treatise on papermaking, with original paper samples illustrating the appearance of an array of experimental materials used in the process. Each specimen leaf has a distinct natural color and texture (bleach was not discovered until after the date of publication), and each contains a brief printed description of the material used in its creation. The goal, according to the author, was not to create a high quality product, but rather to showcase and experiment with the bounty of different materials provided by nature. Among the more interesting ingredients used here are wasps' nests, sawdust, moss, cattail, and hemp; several species of trees are also experimented with, including beechwood and the wool of the poplar. Jacob Christian Schäffer (1718-90) had first suggested the possibility of using wood products in papermaking in an ambitious six-volume work published in Regensburg in 1765-71. Dard Hunter, writing about papermaking in 1925, called the present book "the rarest work on the specific subject of paper that has ever been published" and praised the author as an innovator "who did more than any of his predecessors in the quest for papermaking." In discussing this item (of which he had apparently seen only the second part), Hunter notes that it is "almost rarer than the Regensburg edition." We could find only four copies of this work in the auction records, three of which were lacking plates and/or specimens.         Carta nuova geografica del teatro marittimo della guerra presente tra la russia e la porta ottomana tratta da una recente pubblicata a Parigi.

Molto ben conservata. Tracce di stampa di inchiostro in controparte. Manca a Zacharakis "A catalogue of printed maps of Greece 1477-1800. Third edition"

Dialogues Sur Le Commerce Des Bleds

Londres [Paris, Merlin] 1770 - Octavo. [4], 314, [1] p. Quarter leather over marbled boards. Raised bands, brown leather spine label, marbled endpapers. Rubbing, library labels to spine. Institutional stamps on title pages. Notation to first blank, marginalia in colored pencil. Last 4 pages have chipping at top margin, does not affect text. First edition of a controversial critique of the 1764 French royal edict liberalizing grain exports, arguing against the free trade policy advocated by the Physiocrats. Ferdinando Galiani was an Italian economist, a leading Italian figure of the Enlightenment. His economic reputation was made by Dialogues sur le commerce des bles, "Dialogues on the commerce in wheat". This work, by its light and pleasing style, and its vivacious wit, delighted Voltaire, who described it as a cross between Plato and Moliere. The author, says Giuseppe Pecchio, treated his arid subject as Fontenelle did the vortices of Descartes, or Algarotti the Newtonian system of the world. The question at issue was that of the freedom of the corn trade, then much agitated, and, in particular, the policy of the royal edict of 1764, which permitted the exportation of grain so long as the price had not arrived at a certain height. The general principle he maintains is that the best system in regard to this trade is to have no system - countries of different circumstances requiring, according to him, different modes of treatment. He fell, however, into some of the most serious errors of the mercantilists - holding, as indeed did also Voltaire and even Pietro Verri, that one country cannot gain without another losing, and in his earlier treatise going so far as to defend the action of governments in debasing the currency. Hutchinson, Before Adam Smith, pp. 255-256 and p. 269). Kress S.4633; Goldsmiths 10642; Einaudi 4026; Mattioli 2483; INED 3314; Leblanc, De Thomas More Chaptal, 120; Higgs 4942; Conlon 70:1235.         Persicaria Nientales Nicotianae Folio [Eastern Arsesmart with a Tobacco Leaf]

[London 1770 - Hand-coloured engraving. Very good condition. A beautifully designed image from Edwards "British Herbal", a superb and rare work in which Edwards sought the essence of his subjects, producing graceful flower portraits. Edwards lived in London until about 1778, at which time he moved to Surrey, and exhibited at both the Society of Artists, of which he was a member, and the Royal Academy. In addition to the fine arts, he also provided designs for textiles, particularly cotton calico. Between 1769 and 1770 he published Edwards British Herbal in monthly parts, with text garnered from the works of contemporary botanists and 100 fine hand-coloured engraved plates from his own designs. The plates show that his interests lay not so much in the accurate depiction of botanical specimens as the design possibilities of beautiful flowers. Cf. Dunthorne 105; cf. Great Flower Books (1990) p 93; cf. Henrey III 673; cf. Nissen BBI 579; cf. Oak Spring Flora p 64.

ATTACTA

      A. V. (Augsburg): Franz Xavier Endres, 1770. Folio broadsheet (348 x 272 mm). Hand-colored and varnished engraving, trimmed almost to platemark and mounted on contemporary stiff card paper, the contemporary coloring in maroon, reddish orange, green, and pale pink, on a yellow ground; some creasing, a few small tears, patch-repaired on verso, one 1-inch open tear touching image, small border losses, upper edge rubbed. *** An unusual hand-colored and varnished engraving, commemorating a pilgrimage to the church of Our Lady of Maria Steinbach, in Legau, Bavaria. The image shows the crowned Virgin on a pedestal with a dagger piercing her breast (a reference to the prophecy of Simeon, Luke 2,35, describing a metaphorical sword piercing Mary's soul), emanating rays and surrounded by 14 winged angels' heads, within a rococo frame; the title is on a cartouche below her feet. The word Attacta (feminine perfect passive participle of attingere) which concludes the title was used, apparently only in the 18th and 19th centuries, to indicate that a devotional image of a pilgrimage icon had touched the holy painting or statue itself and was therefore blessed. In other words, through a magical process, the print itself was openly acknowledged to have become an object of worship, charged with special sanctitude. This astonishing break with Catholic doctrine is especially ironic in the present context: The pilgrimage to the church of Maria Steinbach had originated relatively recently, in 1730, with a rumor that the eyes of a statue of the Virgin within the church were moving, and that its face was flushed as if with weeping. The statue rapidly became the object of a popular pilgrimage, as stories of its miracle-working powers spread. At first church officials in Constance tried to suppress the movement, but, as often in such cases of spontaneous Marian fervor, it was decided that a wiser move would be to accept it by attempting to co-opt it. A commission was formed to take the testimony of witnesses to the miracles under oath, all of which was carefully recorded, and the Bishop of Constance gave his blessing to the new shrine in 1733, demonstrating "the power of the laity over the nature of Catholic devotion" (Forster). A new church, with lavish Rococo decoration, was built on the site, in which scenes of 8 miracles, taken from miracle books of 1738 and 1746, were painted on the ceiling by Franz Georg Hermann. In their presentation these miracles were delicately subsumed into a theological context, the clergy being wary of accusations by Protestants from the surrounding area that they were promoting idolatry. Nonetheless, as always, a parallel practice of religiosity continued, outside the doctrinal boundaries of the Church. People prayed at the shrine, and also continued to practice less orthodox forms of religious "Andacht" (devotion). "The statue was even available outside Steinbach": already, in his testimony to the commission, one witness had stated that "he prayed to a picture of the Gnadenbild in his house" (Forster). The present engraving testifies to the continuation of this practice a full generation later. The yellow tone and application of lacquer or varnish may have been intended to imitate yellow silk: a few devotional engravings from Maria Steinbach printed on silk are known. The woodcutter, engraver, stencil-maker (Patronist) and publisher Franz Xavier Endres or Endress had begun his career as a miniature painter, and was admitted (somewhat controversially) to the ranks of Patronisten, or stencil designers (perhaps also designers of woodcut and engraved images) in 1744. From about 1753 to 1780 he managed a successful business publishing devotional imagery and ephemera, of "illustrated prayer cards, blessings for the house and stable, broadsides, indulgences, and so on" (Gebetszettel, Haus- und Stallsegen, Bilderbogen, Ablassblattern, usw.: Spamer, p. 233).         An Essay on the Nature and Immutability of Truth; in opposition to Sophistry and Scepticism. Edinburgh, A. Kincaid & J. Bell, London, E. & C. Dilly, 1770.

      - First edition. 'In 1770 Beattie first published the work for which he is best known, An Essay on Truth, an abrasive attack on 'modern scepticism' in general, and on David Hume in particular. The Essay was a great success, earning its author an honorary degree from Oxford and an audience with George III. Samuel Johnson declared in 1772 that 'We all love Beattie'. Hume, on the other hand, described the Essay as 'a horrible large lie in octavo', and dismissed its author as that 'bigotted silly Fellow'. Although Beattie was no match for Hume as a philosopher, the success of the Essay suggests that, unlike Hume, Beattie voiced the characteristic assumptions and anxieties of his age' (James Beattie: Selected Philosophical Writings, edited by James Harris, 2004). PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: 8vo, viii, 503 pp., contemporary plain boards, stained and with wear at edges, spine label renewed, old annotation on the second of two front free endpapers, otherwise internally clean and unbrowned, a good sound copy with wide margins and edges uncut.

Rara seconda edizione accresciuta. Cfr. Iccu; Melzi, Dizionario opere anonime, II, p. 444; Edizioni giuridiche antiche in lingua italiana, II,2, p. 750, ove si menziona come reale luogo di stampa Coira, Società tipografica.         Ricerche intorno alla natura dello stile. In Milano, appresso Giuseppe Galeazzi Reg. Stampatore, 1770.

In Milano, appresso Giuseppe Galeazzi Reg. Stampatore 1770 - Cm. 20, pp. 164 (2, correzioni). Legatura coeva in mezza pelle con titoli su tassello in marocchino rosso e fregi in oro al dorso. Qualche sporadica e trascurabile macchietta. Esemplare ben conservato. Cfr. Firpo II, p. 512; Gamba, 2147; Parenti, Prime edizioni italiane, p. 67; Iccu. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
