An Essay on the Nature and Immutability of Truth; in opposition to Sophistry and Scepticism. Edinburgh, A. Kincaid & J. Bell, London, E. & C. Dilly, 1770.

      - First edition. 'In 1770 Beattie first published the work for which he is best known, An Essay on Truth, an abrasive attack on 'modern scepticism' in general, and on David Hume in particular. The Essay was a great success, earning its author an honorary degree from Oxford and an audience with George III. Samuel Johnson declared in 1772 that 'We all love Beattie'. Hume, on the other hand, described the Essay as 'a horrible large lie in octavo', and dismissed its author as that 'bigotted silly Fellow'. Although Beattie was no match for Hume as a philosopher, the success of the Essay suggests that, unlike Hume, Beattie voiced the characteristic assumptions and anxieties of his age' (James Beattie: Selected Philosophical Writings, edited by James Harris, 2004). PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: 8vo, viii, 503 pp., contemporary plain boards, stained and with wear at edges, spine label renewed, old annotation on the second of two front free endpapers, otherwise internally clean and unbrowned, a good sound copy with wide margins and edges uncut.

Rara seconda edizione accresciuta. Cfr. Iccu; Melzi, Dizionario opere anonime, II, p. 444; Edizioni giuridiche antiche in lingua italiana, II,2, p. 750, ove si menziona come reale luogo di stampa Coira, Società tipografica.         Ricerche intorno alla natura dello stile. In Milano, appresso Giuseppe Galeazzi Reg. Stampatore, 1770.

In Milano, appresso Giuseppe Galeazzi Reg. Stampatore 1770 - Cm. 20, pp. 164 (2, correzioni). Legatura coeva in mezza pelle con titoli su tassello in marocchino rosso e fregi in oro al dorso. Qualche sporadica e trascurabile macchietta. Esemplare ben conservato.

Cape Coast Castle, a British Settlement on the Gold Coast Africa.

Artist: Barrow John ( - 1850) ; issued in: London; date: ca 1806 1770 - - technic: Copper print- Aquatinta; - colorit: original colored; - condition: Tear on the right side perfectly restored; - size (in cm): 43,5 x 55,5; - description: View of the Cape Coast at the Gold Coast of Ghana in Africa, with decorative offshore ships. Cape Coast Castle is one of about forty ;slave castles;, or large commercial forts, built on the Gold Coast of West Africa (now Ghana) by European traders. It was originally built by the Swedes for trade in timber and gold, but later used in the trans-Atlantic slave trade. Other Ghanaian slave castles include Elmina Castle and Fort Christiansborg. They were used to hold slaves before they were loaded onto ships and sold in the Americas, especially the Caribbean. This ?gate of no return? was the last stop before crossing the Atlantic Ocean. The Gold Coast was a British colony on the Gulf of Guinea in west Africa that became the independent nation of Ghana in 1957.The first Europeans to arrive at the coast were the Portuguese in 1471. They encountered a variety of African kingdoms, some of which controlled substantial deposits of gold in the soil. In 1482, the Portuguese built the Castle of Elmina, the first European settlement on the Gold Coast. From here they traded slaves, gold, knives, beads, mirrors, rum and guns. News of the successful trading spread quickly, and eventually British, Dutch, Danish, Prussian and Swedish traders arrived as well. The European traders built several forts along the coastline. The Gold Coast had long been a name for the region used by Europeans because of the large gold resources found in the area. The slave trade was the principal exchange for many years. The British Gold Coast was formed in 1867 after the British government abolished the African Company of Merchants in 1821 and seized privately held lands along the coast

V., etw. fleckig, stockfleckig, Gbrsp.

(25.3 x 19 cm). 4 engraved plates. Contemporary quarter calf over mottled boards, smooth spine gilt, green morocco lettering piece. An excellent example. First edition of the Shu-Jing in French, and the First European language translation of Chou-King, one of the five classical and sacred texts of Chinese culture. It is a collection of rhetorical prose attributed to figures of ancient China, and served as the foundation of Chinese political philosophy for over 2,000 years. According to a later tradition, the Book of Documents was compiled by Confucius (551–479 BC) as a selection from a much larger group of documents, with some of the remainder being included in the Yizhoushu. However, the early history of both texts is obscure. Beginning with Confucius, writers increasingly drew on the Documents to illustrate general principles, though it seems that several different versions were in use. The work is translated by Antoine Gaubil (1689-1759), and edited by the famous orientalist Joseph de Guignes (1721-1800). Brunet II, 222. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Il Disertore a new Comic Opera as acted at the King?s Theatre in the Hay Market. Written by Mr. BADINI. The Music entirely new, By Signor GUGLIELMI.

      - London, printed by T. Baldwin, N. 42, Fleet Street, 1770. (Price one Shilling). In 8vo (cm. 18,2); mezza pelle coeva; sguardie colorate; pp. VIII, 2 nn. a 95, (1). Testo in inglese ed italiano. Con l?elenco degli Interlocutori; Inventore de? Balli il Signor Galeotti; primo Ballo, Divertimenti dell?armata; Secondo Ballo, Feste di Contado; Elenco dei ballerini principali; Pittore macchinista il Signor Bigari. RARISSIMO.

An autograph letter signed ('Le Bn de Humboldt') to an unidentified 'Monsieur le Duc'; it is a letter of introduction for the geologist [Alexandre] Brongniart. Paris, 27 March 1820; small quarto, 2 pages, with a conjugate blank leaf; thin strip of tissue-paper on the outside rear page, and minimal loss to this blank leaf near the centre of the hinge (both as a result of having been mounted in, then removed from, an album); light creases where folded in four for posting; in excellent condition

Humboldt remembers with gratitude the assistance rendered by le Duc to himself and his friends and collaborators, [Louis Joseph] Gay-Lussac and [Christian Leopold von] Buch. He hopes that M. Brongniart, 'l'homme célèbre', who wishes to visit Vesuvius and the lava flows of Ischia [a volcanic island near Naples], will be afforded similar kindnesses. Alexandre Brongniart (1770-1847) was a French chemist, mineralogist, and zoologist, who collaborated with Georges Cuvier on a study of the geology of the region around Paris. In 1800 he was appointed director of the porcelain manufactory at Sèvres, a position he held until his death 47 years later. Alexander von Humboldt (in full, Friedrich Wilhelm Heinrich Alexander, Freiherr [Baron] von Humboldt) was a major figure in the classical period of physical geography and biogeography. His book 'Kosmos' (1845) made a valuable contribution to the popularization of science. Numerous species and geographical features have been named after him, not least the Humboldt Current off the west coast of South America (biographical details courtesy of Encyclopaedia Britannica and Wikipedia, both online).

Hayward 184 (for one of the duodecimos once thought to be privately printed trial issues, but which Todd ("The private issues of The deserted village," Studies in Bibliography, 6:25-44 1954 ) has now identified as unauthorized later printings). Sterling 405 (Exhibition in the Yale University Library of the Works of Oliver Goldsmith in Connection with the Bicentenary of His Birth). Tinker 1122. Courtney (Johnson), p. 113 ("The last four lines in Goldsmith's Deserted Village were by Johnson."). Temple Scott, pp. 238-252 (A "poem without which we should be poor indeed. . . . Such a demand for a poem [citing four authorized edition published within the first 30 days of first publication] passed all anticipations; it was never heard of in those days."). ESTC T146768. "Completed at some time in 1769, [and,] after at least six months of further revisions, The Deserted Village was finally published in 16 May 1770, as a quarto pamphlet, and six more editions appeared that same year. Nearly all the first reviews were favourable . . . Despite widespread resistance to its mourning the disruptive effects of enclosure [laws], The Deserted Village none the less gave fresh expression to the traditional form of elegy. Early readers admired the nostalgic descriptions of a vanished village life, with its vivid portraits of the preacher, the blacksmith, the schoolmaster, and the widow." (ODNB) "Goldsmith's The Deserted Village is not the greatest of the English elegies, but in its successful adjustment of serious Tory thought with gracious charm and in its successful redefinition of the pastoral elegy in terms of contemporary experience, Goldsmith's excellent and indispensable poetry may be said to deserve our admiration as well as our affection."       Imp. Akad. Nauk Skt. Peterburg 1770 - Quarto (26.3 x 20.5 cm). Title pages in Russian, Latin, German and French, 403 pp. with 4 allegorical head- and tailpieces engraved by Christopher Melhior Roth after Jacob Shtelin; just a couple of leaves with light spotting. Contemporary full Russian calf, spine with raised bands stamped in bling, label lettered in Russian, handprinted endpapers, red edges; fully covered with clear adhesive film, dampstain to back cover. "The best and most luxurious edition" of Catherine's famous 'Great Instructions', such described by Count M.A. Korf, then director of the Imperial Library. First published and "signé de la propre main de Sa Majesté Impériale" in 1768; this edition however is the only in several languages and illustrated. These instructions were "largely compiled and adapted by Catherine personally from the texts of Montesquieu and Beccaria. Although the project was never brought to fruition, the impulse behind it stands as one of the nobler concepts of Catherine's reign" (Fekula 2013, for a later edition). A major document of the Enlightenment, it condemned torture and capital punishment and endorsed such principles as the equality of all before the law. The illustration consists of two detailed symbolic engravings, each repeated once, by Roth (d. 1798), an engraver from Nuremberg who mostly worked in Russia. "The most magnificent and desirable of the more than 40 editions of the Nakaz" (Widener) of "one of the most remarkable political treatises ever compiled and published by a reigning sovereign in modern times" (I. de Madariaga, Russia in the Age of Catherine the Great (1981), p. 151). Some great scholarly publications have taken place among these numerous editions, especially published in St. Petersburg in 1893 (using the French text from this edition) and 1907, as well as the more recent The Nakaz of Catherine the Great: Collected Texts (2010), with a bibliography of the 43 editions, edited by Butler and Tomsinov. Drage 208; Fekula 2013; Sopikov 6456 ('best edition'); SK 2151; Widener M., Yale Law School, Lillian Goldman Law Library, on their copy, exhibited in 2012. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Patent of nobility, donated by Roman Empress Maria Theresia of Austria (1717-1780) to the brothers Franz Karl, Ignaz Victor, Johann Adalbert and Gottlieb Xaver Geramb.

Holy Roman Empire, Vienna, d.d. 4 July 1770. Folio, full red velvet with damaged yellow silk ribbons, bound with yellow wire. 36 x 29cm. (18) pages on vellum. Manuscript, calligraphic text, with printed decorative margins. One hand painted coat-of-arms in colour and gold and the signature of Empress Maria Theresia. Imperial red wax seal attached in disc shaped decorated wooden box, intact. It is attached to the book by the yellow wire of the binding. All in good condition. This patent of nobility was issued to four brothers who were entitled to call themselves Von (Edle von) Geramb thereafter. The Von Geramb family, reputedly from Hungarian origins, lived in what we now know as Austria and served the holy roman empire for several generations as is stated in the patent of nobility. Franz Karl served as aide-de-camps in the Kalnofischen Husar Regiment and was among other things active in the campaign in the Netherlands. Later on he became inspector in Nagybanien (also known in German as Frauenbach, currently in Romania). Ignaz Victor was a military man as well and served in the Graf Serbellonischen Cuirassier Regiment. Johann Adalbert served as Oberleutnant and distinguished himself in the Prussian War. The last brother mentioned, Gottlieb Xaver(ius) seems to have been active as Oberhuttenverwalter. H136

Collection de Vases Inventés, et Dessinés

Paris: [1770]. Folio (500 x 327 mm). Engraved title and dedication, 27 full-page plates of urns and vases, with 20 shown in outline on opposite pages, engraved by Niodot after Fontainieu, Charles-Nicolas Cochin II and Simon Charles Miger. Contemporary French mottled calf gilt. Front hinge cracked, some light wear to extremities. Provenance: Jean Baptiste L'Ecuy (1740-1834), Abbot-General of the Premonstratensian Order (armorial bookplate, and his inscription to:) Pierre de Launay; purchased from Marlborough Rare Books, 1986. FIRST EDITION. Fontanieu was keeper of King Louis XVI's furniture, and this series of designs for turners, casters and chasers was highly influential in inspiring many important vases produced by the Sévres Factory. The style reflects the move away from the rococo towards neoclassicism, and the plates show both the outline of the forms, and the forms fully decorated. The final seven plates show vases in situ on plinths. A fine association copy from the library of Jean Baptise L'Ecuy, Abbot-General of the Premonstratensian Order and a notable collector of books and scientific instruments. He has written a lengthy presentation inscription in Latin giving the book to his friend and neighbor, Pierre de Launay, Director of the Royal Glass-works at St. Gobain. Berlin Kat. 1089; Cohen-de Ricci 407; Guilmard I, p. 233. From the Collection of Arthur & Charlotte Vershbow.

A Collection of the Most Approved Entertaining Stories, Calculated for the Instructions and Amusement of all the little Masters and Misses in the vast Empire. By Solomon Winlove, Esq. A New Edition. London, Printed for E. Newbery, by J. Cundee, n.d. [1780].

Paper covered boards with a delicate flower pattern. Slight damage at the lower part of the spine. The contents are in good shape. 7,5 x 11,5 cm, [6] 1-121 [3, cat. of little books published by E. Newbery] pp. Engraved title page of the story 'The Knights' and six woodcuts throughout the text. This rare 'new' edition contains seventeen stories that differ from fables to fairy tales. The first and second edition of this book were published in 1770. The stories are rewritten and brought together by Solomon Winlove. It is thought that Winlove is a pseudonym used by the Irish scholar and author Oliver Goldsmith (1730-1774). Goldsmith is better known as the writer of the novel The Vicar of Wakefield (1766) and the poem The Deserted Village (1771). As Winlove, the author mainly focussed on moral and instructional stories, for example in his version of the Holy Bible for children (1772) or The pleasing moralist (1798) . The 'new' edition of this beautifully written and composed book is very rare. B2363

Tephilloth, Containing The Forms of Prayers Which are Publicly Read in The Synagogues, and Used in All Families.

London W. Tooke for The Translators 1770 - First edition. Octavo (17.5 x 11 cm); [1], 213, [16] pp. Text in Hebrew and English. Worm marks and small marginal tears to a few pages, contemporary brown calf, light wear, edges rubbed. A very good copy. First Hebrew-English Prayer Book Printed in England. In 1770, Alexander Alexander, pioneer of the Hebrew press in London, produced this liturgy according to the Ashkenazic rite in partnership with Benedict Meyers (Jost) of Halberstadt. The first English translation of the daily prayer-book, it was printed on a subscription basis and interestingly, the list of subscribers included many non-Jews. The translators Alexander and Meyers took note in their preface, that despite the cultural and religious significance of the Hebrew language, "being imperfectly understood by many, by some not at all, it has become necessary to translate our prayers into the language of the country wherein it has pleased Divine Providence to appoint our lot. They also belittled the earlier attempt at an English translation of a Hebrew prayer-book, which was published in London in 1738 by the apostate Abraham Mears under the pseudonym Gamaliel Ben Pedahzur, titled 'The Book of Religion, Ceremonies, and Prayers '. Vinograd, London 60; Roth B8:10. [Attributes: First Edition]
