        Contes et Nouvelles en Vers

NP ND (ca 1770), Londres - 12mo. XVIII, [19]-122, [10], 118, [2], [4], V, [3], [7]-129, [9], 132, [2]pp. Original spotted calf with gold lettering on spines. Two engraved frontispiece portraits of La Fontaine. Decorative head- and tailpieces. Remarkable edition of La Fontaine's "Contes," lively stories in verse, grazing and sometimes transgressing the bounds of contemporary moral standards. They are magnificently illustrated with 84 engravings by Martinet after the illustrations of Charles Dominique Eisen (1720-1778), Louis XV's Court painter, and drawing master to Madame de Pompadour. The substantial group of plates here, is the liveliest and the most adroit that Eisen ever drew. Thoroughly at home with the varied action of these lusty stories--their love passages, their intrigues, their practical jokes--he is also expert in choosing the moment in each that will best serve his purpose as an illustrator. This copy is a smaller size of the famous Fermiers généraux edition originaly published in Amsterdam in 1762. Moderate rubbing along edges. Closed tear along front joint of second volume, but front board holding firmly. Minor age-toning along paper margin. Text in French. Bindings in overall good- to good, interior in good+ to very good condition. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Dell'architettura. Dialogi [sic].

Cicognara, 611.         Les Baisers, Précédés Du Mois De Mai, Poëme

et se trouve à Paris, chez Lambert, et Delalain,, A La Haye 1770 - Additional engraved title-page by Ponce, one plate by de Longueil, title-page vignette by Aliamet, 44 head and tailpieces by Aliamet, Baquoy, Binet, De Launay, Lingée, de Longueil, Masquelier, Massard, Née, and Ponce, after Eissen and Marillier. The title-page in black and red and with headings in red. 8vo. [207 x 132 x 16 mm]. 119pp. Bound c.1900 by Lortic (signed in gilt at the foot of the spine) in red goatskin, the covers with a gilt triple fillet border. Smooth spine divided into six panels with gilt compartments, lettered in the second and third, the others with a flower and sprigs, the edges of the boards tooled with a gilt double fillet, the turn-ins with gilt rolls, marbled endleaves, edges gilt over marbled. A few trivial spots but a very good copy of the first issue of the first edition on Holland paper with the title-page and headings in red and errors in pagination. All of the illustrations are after Eissen, except for two after Marillier. Acclaimed by both Portalis and Cohen as "the masterpiece of the eighteenth century" and by Salomons as "one of the most gracefully and beautifully illustrated books ever produced". "At first glance Les baisers seems to be one more "trifle light as air". Complaining of the price of a louis with Dorat demanded for "this magnificent pamphlet", Grimm maintained that there was no "girl at the opera who sells her kisses so dearly". But closer examination provides a different perspective. The twenty-two headpieces and twenty tailpieces with which Eissen adorned Dorat's hundred odd pages of text turn the book into a veritable paean to voluptuousness. And far from being a handicap, the small scale of the illustrations intensifies their appeal. It made Eissen, the Goncourts remarked, "the man of the infinitely small feminine nude, of the duodecimo nude". This triumph of miniature art is the apotheosis of the vignette". "Les baisers needs to be seen in its first issue on Holland paper with ample margins and early impressions of the vignettes. Such copies may be readily identified by their title-pages in black and red and several errors of pagination in "Les mois de mai" - Ray, The Art of the French Illustrated Book 1700 to 1914, 31.         Studienblatt mit Köpfen und Figuren.

Jahrhunderts nachlebt.

A Journey into Siberia, made by Order of the King of France … containing an Account of the Manners and Customs of the Russians …

London & Gloucester: T. Jeffreys,, 1770 & 1764. [together with;] The History of Kamtschatka, and the Kurilski Islands, with the Countries adjacent … 2 volumes bound in 1, quarto (254 × 200 mm). Modern half calf, marbled boards, black morocco labels to the spine, low bands framed by single gilt fillets, single fillets in blind to the spine and corner edges, edges sprinkled brown. The first-named with folding map frontispiece with hand-colour, 9 plates, one of them folding; the second with folding map frontispiece and one other folding map, 5 plates, 2 of them folding. Light browning, else a very good copy in a clean and neat recent binding. First English editions of d'Auteroche and Krasheninnikov's important travels in Siberia, first published in French in 1768, and in Russian in 1755 respectively, the publisher recommending Krasheninnikov as a "proper Supplement" to d'Auteroche, describing it as "just published" verso of the last leaf of the contents. A colleague of Maraldi, Cassini de Thury and Lalande at the Paris Observatory, the French priest and astronomer abbé Jean-Baptiste Chappe d'Auteroche travelled to Siberia in 1761 to observe the transit of Venus, and his account of that trip describes the meteorology, climate, fauna and minerals of the region, and also gives a sociological commentary. As Hill comments, these "forthright and sometimes provocative descriptions of Russian manners and character … inspired the publication of an indignant rebuttal, sometimes attributed to Catherine the Great". As the second volume of his account d'Auteroche included his own translation of Krasheninnikov's description of Kamchatka, Opisanie zemli Kamchatki (St Petersburg, 1755), the first scientific account of the region, and "still regarded as one of the landmarks of scientific travel literature" (Howgego). Krasheninnikov "participated in the Russian Academy of Sciences' second Kamchatka expedition (1733–43), under Bering, which attempted to prove the feasibility of a north-east passage between Asia and America", here it is offered in James Grieve's "judicious abridgement [which] resulted in a more balanced product that proved of enduring interest" (ODNB). Grieve had practised medicine in Russia, as doctor to the Kazan and Siberian factories' directorate; at the St Petersburg land hospital and a guards division based in the city; and at the courts of the Empress Elizabeth, and perhaps, briefly, that of Catherine the Great.

        SystÍme de la nature

Ã¬The Bible of Materialismî[HOLBACH, Paul Henri Thiry, baron dí]. Londres [i.e., Amsterdam: Marc-Michel Rey], 1770.First edition. Two volumes, octavo. [12], 370; [4], 412 pp.Contemporary speckled calf with covers ruled in blind. Elaborately gilt spine with burgundy morocco label, gilt board edges, marbled endpapers, edges stained red. Joints and extremities rubbed. Occasional light foxing and browning, primarily to first and last few leaves of each volume. Generally, a very good, crisp copy. In a quarter morocco clamshell case.Paul Heinrich Dietrich, Baron díHolbach (1723-1789) first became known as a scientist, contributing some four hundred articles to the EncyclopÃ?die of his friend and colleague Denis Diderot. Holbach later turned from science to more dangerous topics, writing and having published abroad, a number of books attacking religion in all aspects, which flooded illegally into France. Unable to publish safely under his own name, he had the ingenious idea of using the names of recently dead French authors. Thus, in 1770, his most famous book, ìThe System of Nature,î appeared under the name of Jean-Baptiste Mirabaud.ìIn the SystÃ?me Holbach rejected the Cartesian mind-body dualism and attemped to explain all phenomena, physical and mental, in terms of matter in motion. He derived the moral and intellectual faculties from manís sensibility to impressions made by the external world, and saw human actions as entirely determined by pleasure and pain. He continued his direct attack on religion by attempting to show that it derived entirely from habit and custom. But the SystÃ?me was not a negative or desctructive book: Holbach rejected religion because he saw it as a wholly harmful influence, and he tried to supply a more desirable alternative. In fact, he outlined a whole ethical and political philosophy, which he expanded in his later worksî (Printing and the Mind of Man).Goldsmithsí Library 10607. Kress 6737.       1770. Radierung, 1770, auf Bütten. 16:19,1 cm. Nr. 31, I (von II). Sehr selten!.

Robert Sayer, London 1770 - Mezzotint (margins expertly extended) on laid paper. A fine early mezzotint after an equestrian portrait by the mid-18th century master Francis Sartorius Robert Sayer issued four mezzotint portraits of well-known racehorses after Sartorius, each with details of their successes, and dated 10 January 1770. The present print is probably somewhat later. Francis Sartorius was born in Nuremburg and came to London with his father, John, in the mid-18th century. "Francis exhibited paintings of racehorses, hunters and hacks in London between 1773 and 1791, including twelve pictures in the Royal Academy. His work bridges the gap between the 'primitive' work of James Seymour and the realism of George Stubbs." (Lane, p.157). Charles Lane , British Racing Prints p.159.

Mexico Joseph Antonio de Hogel 1770 - "A Highly Esteemed Work"-Sabin CORTÉS, Hernan. LORENZANA, Francisco Antonio. First edition of one of the seminal works on the early civilization of Mexico and its conquest. Folio (10 11/16 x 7 3/4 inches; 271 x 196 mm.). [20], xvi, 400, [18, index] pp. With frontispiece engraved by Navarro, folding map of new Spain engraved in 1769, large folding plate of the great temple of Mexico, thirty-one plates of Mexican hieroglyphics, folding map of California (by the pilot Domingo del Castillo in 1541), and a full page engraving of the ancient Mayan calendar. With errata. Contemporary vellum with brown morocco spine label, lettered in gilt. Some minor staining to vellum. Spine label a bit chipped. A small professional repair to first folding map. Inner hinges cracked but firm. Some light spotting and a bit of worming throughout. Overall, a very good copy; exceptionally clean, well-margined and in a contemporary binding. An extremely important work containing valuable documents of the history of the conquest of Mexico. In this book Lorenzana (who was the Archbishop of Mexico from 1766 to 1772) reprints three of the Hernando Cortés letters to Charles V, with copious annotations, along with two highly important maps: Alzate’s map of New Spain and Castillo’s map of the Pacific Coast. The Historia de Nueva-Espana also includes a reproduction of an Aztec codex (engraved on thirty-one sheets), the Matrícula de Tributos, the first native book to be published in Europe. This work is particularly important in that it reveals the economics of the Aztec Empire, which had existed for only a little over a century before the Spanish conquest. The Aztecs first pacified foreign territories through commercial trade, and after their submission, exacted tribute in merchandise and raw materials desired by the Aztec elite in the central highlands of Mexico. This codex illustrates the precise tributes and the quantities of each, extracted on a regular basis like taxes, from the new provinces. "The notes by Lorenzana are of value, being chiefly on local question. This collection led to the appearance of several translations" (Sabin). Medina V, 5380. Palau 63204. Sabin 16938.         The History of Hindostan . Translated from the Persian; Translated from the Persian

London: T. Becket and P.A. De Hondt, 1770-, 1772. Three volumes, quarto, folding map and eight plates (including frontispieces), a fine set in handsome contemporary gilt decorated calf, spine in raised bands with red and green morocco labels, joints with some wear. A beautifully bound set of Dow's history of Bengal, illustrated with remarkable engraved plates mimicking Mughal imperial art and a folding plate illustrating the Sanskrit language. Alexander Dow (1736-1779) was a Scottish infantry officer in the employ of the East India Company. Born in Perthshire, Dow left Scotland in 1757 under a cloud, possibly fleeing the repercussions of a duel. He served for a few years as a midshipman before landing in Bengal in 1760 where he signed on as a cadet in the East India Company. Both intelligent and ambitious, he rose quickly within the ranks and as lieutenant was assigned with raising a battalion of native troops in 1763. Despite promotion to captain in the following year, Dow's fiery temperament and outspoken nature eventually caused a rift with the army elite when he complained over wages, a move that left him relegated to Britain by 1768. Here he published a translation of old Persian tales and the first two volumes of this history of India derived from the works of the Persian scholar Ferishtam. Dow eventually returned to Bengal to continue his career, but further unpleasantness with the Company administration left him back in England by 1772 where he published the third volume of this history, appending a biting attack on the governance of Bengal. Dow's was critical of entrenched corruption, cronyism and self-interest within the East India Company that stifled the possibility of wealth for generations of merchants. His essay is critical of monopoly licenses, property law, the injustices of the resident princes and appalling poverty of the peasant classes. Dow proposed a thorough revision of the status quo, including the introduction of new banking systems to provide credit and the circulation of paper money to alleviate the shortage of minted currency. Dow's History of Hindostan remains a crucial source of information on the region. In addition to his essay on the East India Company, the work contains a treatise of over 80 pages on the Hindu gods, festivals and myths that includes a fine engraved plate of the alphabet in Sanskrit. Second revised and enlarged edition of the first two volumes, first edition of volume 3.

Collection of Twenty Original Drawings of Mills.

Flanders ca 1770 - Twenty paper sheets of various sizes and forms (possibly of 22), ink drawings with watercolour and ink captions in French; very occasional tears repaired. All mounted, ten framed and glazed. Provenance: Count of Turckheim (by reputation). BEAUTIFUL GROUP OF UNUSUALLY LARGE TECHNICAL PLANS AND DRAWINGS OF FOUR FLEMISH MILLS BUILT IN THE LATE 18TH CENTURY - ALL HANDCOLOURED AND IN VERY FRESH CONDITION. AN EXCEPTIONAL GROUP OF TECHNICAL DRAWINGS WITH ARTISTIC MERITS. Using all resources of the colour palette as well as paper overlays on the main drawing, these twenty sheets show, in horizontal and vertical sections, the mechanism and structure of wind-, water- and saw mills. The great detail demonstrates the technical advancement of the famous northern-european mills; at the same time figures of workers adorn the drawings and, enable us to determine the date when these drawings were produced. Several drawings show sections of the architectural structures, which are utilitarian buildings, designed to withstand the the immense physical forces working in mill buildings. Connections of beams had to be re-inforced by wrought iron sheets and bars and the rotating transmission of power was firmly anchored in the thick walls. The large format of the drawings, the attention to detail and the quality of the production suggest that the group was made for presentation purposes, probably by an architect-engineer to advertise his skills. The draughtsman used the shadow of the structures to further explain the views in an additional dimension; every nail in the floorboards is depicted, as well as fish in the water. The French captions and explanations to the verso of the sheets indicate the mill type, the number of sheets for one mill and the place where each mill was actually built. They break down as follows: 1- A sawmill with circular horse-gin in Anvers (6 leaves) 2- A sawmill in Melle, near Ghent (3 leaves) 3- A saw- and oilmill in Enghien (7 leaves) 4- A watermill in the Abbaye du Parc (leaves 3-6).         Copy of a letter to J. Ellis, Esq. , of Gray's-inn, from Dr. Solander... [in], The Annual Register, or a View of the History, Politicks, and Literature for the Year 1769

London: Printed for J. Dodsley, 1770. Two volumes in one, octavo; contemporary ms. ownership and shelf marks on front pastedown; an excellent copy in contemporary calf. Early news from the Endeavour. OA little-known first voyage publication, in fact one of the first accounts of the voyage to be printed: a letter from Solander to John Ellis written from Rio de Janeiro, dated 1 December 1768. Solander writes of his and Joseph Banks's frustration at being refused permission by the viceroy to go ashore to study the abundant plant life but how, by 'fair means and foul', they had managed to acquire some 300 specimens, and identify a number of new species. Although only a few pages long, the letter bristles with scientific comment on the flora and fauna they had managed to examine, and simultaneously shows Solander's eagerness for the voyage, commenting on how he has enlisted some of the brighter sailors to help identify and catalogue new species. He also recommends that visitors to Madeira seek out the assistance of one Dr Heberden who, Solander notes, contributed to their scientific study by procuring Banks and himself 'access to a nunnery' - given the ribald jokes later made at Banks' expense on the subject of his amorous adventures during the voyage, one wonders at the wisdom of this aside. Solander, who trained with Linnaeus, moved to England in 1759 for what was meant to be a brief visit, but it became his permanent home. With introductions from his former tutor, he became firm friends with John Ellis, and made substantial contributions to many of his most important works, including the Natural History of Zoophytes. However, it is the patronage of Sir Joseph Banks which was the turning point in Solander's career, and which led to his joining Cook's first voyage. On their return, Solander became Banks' secretary and librarian, a portmanteau position that also meant that he was, in effect, the curator of the natural history collection. Like Banks, Solander was very shy of taking credit for his work, and although he worked on some of the most important natural history projects of his generation, very few pieces were actually signed, and have only been attributed to him by later scholarship. Despite his many travels, Solander never returned to Sweden, and died at Soho Square in 1782. Not recorded by Beddie.

A Londra, 1770. Octavo, xvi, 104 pp.; a fine uncut copy in original soft boards, rather worn and stained but nonetheless attractive, owner's inscription 'Girolamo Gherardini' on title. Very rare Italian translation of Bricaire de la Dixmerie's fictional account of Autourou, published in Paris in the same year; one of the earliest works on Tahiti. The book is not recorded by the National Union Catalog, nor by the standard bibliography of Tahiti (O'Reilly and Reitman's Bibliographie de Tahiti). Rolf Du Rietz comments in the Kroepelien catalogue that the printing is so rare that he has been able to locate only two copies of the work and no reference to it in any bibliography or catalogue. This important work relating to Tahiti takes the form of a letter allegedly written by Aotourou, the Tahitian who returned to Paris with Bougainville. There was much criticism of Bougainville on this point - Diderot particularly upbraided him for having 'torn' the native from his environment - but Autourou was a sensation, and apparently fascinated by the French capital. Bougainville himself paid to kit out a ship when Autourou expressed a wish to return home, but the Tahitian was killed en voyage by an outbreak of small pox. La Dixmerie was personally involved with Aotourou, and helped introduce him to Parisian high society. Despite this personal contact, la Dixmerie remained virulently opposed to the popular notion of the noble savage, just as he sided with Diderot in arguing that it was a violence to have brought Autourou back to France. In this fictional letter, Aotourou satirically compares the mores of Paris society with that of Nouvelle-Cythère. The description of Tahiti is based on the Lettre de Monsieur de Commerson, the naturalist on the voyage, which was first published in 1769. Published the next year, la Dixmerie's imaginative work is, as du Rietz comments, 'one of the earliest books relating to Tahiti.' Not until the 1779 publication of Taitbout's Essai sur l'Isle d'Otahiti would there be any serious separate work on Tahiti.
