All leaves except the final one with red vertical rules creating margins about 3.6 cm. from inner and outer edges. Written in ink, in the same large, very legible hand throughout. (1), 190, (1 blank) ll. After the title page, only the following leaves have text: 2-11; 21-6; 41-5; 61-3. Folio (36 x 25 cm.), contemporary mottled sheep (some wear, but still sound), spine richly gilt with raised bands in seven compartments, crimson leather lettering-piece in second compartment from head, text-block edges rouged. Very good condition. Fine to very fine internally. Early or contemporary foliation. Oblong printed paper ticket (blue-gray on white) of "Bernardino Ribeiro de Carvalho // Biblioteca" 2.3 x 6.3 cm. at upper outer corner of front pastedown endleaf. ---- The Casa dos Vinte e Quatro was an organ of the municipal government of Lisbon created in 1384 by the Mestre de Avis, D. João I. Consisting of 24 officials representing the twelve mechanical offices, it was a deliberative body, requiring a majority vote before putting into practice any measures. Members of the house, who had to be 40 years old, were elected by a vote of two-thirds of the masters of their respective guilds. Later this institution spread to other municipalities in Portugal, and even to some overseas cities in the Portuguese Empire. In smaller municipalities within Portugal, similar councils consisted of 12 officials, and were known as Casas dos Doze. With the implementation of the liberal regime in Portugal, the Casas dos Vinte e Quatro became extinct by virtue of a decree of 7 May 1834. The present manuscript provides a snapshot of the Lisbon Casa dos Vinte e Quatro just prior to new regulations instituted under the Marquês de Pombal in 1771. Perhaps it was even prepared to assist in drafting the new regulations.@Provenance: Bernardino Ribeiro de Carvalho (1846-1910), born in the freguesia de Cabaços, concelho de Alvaiázere, came to Lisbon, was brought into the business of his uncle / father?in?law, and acquired a great fortune importing exotic lumber. He was a passionate book collector, frequenting auctions and bookshops from the 1860s until shortly prior to his death. Among the sales he attended and purchased at were those of Sir Gubián (1867), the Visconde de Juromenha (1887), José da Silva Mendes and Jorge César de Figanière (1889), the Condes de Linhares (1895), and José Maria Nepomuceno (1887).---- See Franz-Paul de Almeida Langhans, @As Antigas Corporações dos Ofícios Mecânicos e a Câmara de Lisboa, Lisbon: Câmara Municipal de Lisboa, 1947. Handbound Anthology of Poetry from the 1700s

FONT>Existence of God 1770 - A Collection of Poetry from 1770 and 1771, bound together as one volume. Bound in half leather and marbled paper-covered boards, with gilt lettering and spine decoration. Ekins's Loves of Medea and Jason is a first edition. W. H. Roberts's are two first editions and a second edition. Armine and Elviraand The Hermit of Warkworth aresecond editions. Fables of Flora is a third edition. William Hayward Roberts, d. 1791, was a poet and Church of England clergyman. He was educated at Eton, and King's College, Cambridge. He returned to Eton as an assistant, then fellow. He became provost in 1781. Roberts combined his work at Eton with the position of rector. From 1772 until his death, Roberts was one of the king's chaplains. Amongst Roberts's works, A Poetical Essay, on the Existence of God rehearses arguments from order and design to refute the teachings of Aristotle and Epicurus. It rewrites Lucretius's apostrophe to Venus as an address to conscience, and ends by illustrating the providence of God through a brief, polemical, and strongly anti-Catholic history of the English church in the sixteenth century. (DNB)Oliver Goldsmith, 1728 1774, was an Anglo-Irish writer, poet, and physician known for his novel The Vicar of Wakefield, his pastoral poem The Deserted Village, written in memory of his brother, and his plays. Edmund Cartwright, 1743 1823, was an English clergyman, poet, and inventor of the power loom. In 1770 he published Armine and Elviraa Legendary Poem, which rapidly went through a series of editions, and was later thought highly of by Sir Walter Scott. (DNB)John Langhorne, 1735 - 1779, was an English poet and clergyman. He was first a tutor, and later an Usher at Wakefield free school. In Wakefield, he took orders, being ordained deacon. He is chiefly remembered as being the translator, jointly with his brother, Rev. William Langhorne, of Plutarch's Lives, but in his day he had some reputation as a poet, his chief works in poetry being Studley Park and Fables of Flora. Thomas Percy, 1729 1811, was Bishop of Dromore. Before being made bishop, he was chaplain to George III. Percy's work continues to attract the attention of scholars around the world. Percy not only travelled from grocer's warehouse to bishop's palace but in a parallel literary career produced at least one book, the Reliques, long recognized as a seminal work of English Romanticism (Groom, 1. 1) and considered a landmark in European literature. (DNB)Jeffrey Ekins, 1731 - 1791, was the dean of Carlisle. Educated atEton and King's College, Cambridge, Ekinslater taught atEton, before accepting therectory of Quainton. He became dean of Carlisle in 1782. He wrote poetry throughout his life. Condition: The binding is generally tight and firm. The front board and free-endpaper, and blank, aredetached. The rear board is attached by the cords only, and could possibly detach in the post, even after careful packaging. There is wear to the extremities, including bumping and rubbing. Internally the pages are generallybright with scattered spotting and the occasional handling or ink mark. Overall the condition is very good, excepting the detached front board and endpapers. MANUSCRIPT MAP OF NORTHWEST PENNSYLVANIA].

[Np, but likely northwest Pennsylvania. ca. ]. 1770 - Manuscript map on two joined pieces of paper, measuring 15 x 15 1/2 inches total. Old folds. Three very small separations at the folds with no real loss, some wrinkling, else near fine. An intriguing, detailed, and very rare manuscript map of northwestern Pennsylvania, created by noted surveyor and soldier Robert Lettis Hooper, Jr. The map encompasses the present-day Pennsylvania counties of Erie, Crawford, Venango, Armstrong, Jefferson, and Clarion, a district that would later become famous due to its oil and gas deposits. In fact, "Oil Spring" and "Oil C[reek]" are shown in the northeast corner of the map. The scale of the map is fifteen miles to an inch, and covers the area from Presque Isle on Lake Erie (site of the present-day city of Erie) in the northwest to the region just to the north and east of Pittsburgh (which is not shown) in the southwest. The western branch of the Susquehanna is drawn in the southeast, and the area that is now encompassed by the Allegheny National Forest is in the northeast. The dominant feature of the map is the "Allegany River," shown snaking its way north and east to its headwaters. More than a dozen tributaries, rivers, and creeks branching off the Allegheny are shown and identified, as is the Buffalo Swamp and Fort "Wenango" (sic, actually Venango). Two roads are indicated on the map in dotted lines, one showing the "road from Fort Pitt to Wenango," and the other, in the far northeast, marking the "Indian Path to Cayuga." Hooper notes that the fort at Presque Isle has been demolished, and identifies the ruins of another French fort. Along the run of the Allegheny where it branches northeast at Fort Wenango, Hooper notes that "the current of this river is moderate and the canoeing is good to the mouth of Oil C." In the area just northwest of present-day Erie, Hooper writes that "when you have passed those short broken hills that confines the Allegany [sic] River, the country is level, the soil thin and a whitish clay, through which the water does not readily penetrate." In the south-central portion of the map Hooper has drawn a line connecting the Allegheny and Susquehanna rivers and has written a note reading "purchased in 1768," likely referring to an early land speculation in which he engaged. Hooper has signed his name on the map in the right margin. Robert Lettis Hooper, Jr. (ca. 1730-97) was born in New Jersey, the son of Robert Lettis Hooper, who was Chief Justice of the colony of New Jersey. Early in his life Hooper was involved in the milling business and as a merchant in Philadelphia. In the 1760s he made trips west to Fort Pitt, and was contracted for making land surveys and engaged in other projects throughout the region for the colonial government for several years. During the Revolution he served as Deputy Quartermaster General in the Continental Army, and was responsible for the area covering Northampton, Bucks, Berks, and Philadelphia counties in Pennsylvania, as well as Sussex County in New Jersey. After the war he became involved in the iron business in New Jersey, operating the Durham Ironworks and the Ringwood Ironworks, and continued working as a surveyor, laying out the towns of Mine Hill and Bloomsbury in New Jersey. Hooper served in the New Jersey legislature in the 1780s, and was involved in land sales in Pennsylvania in the 1780s as well. A great colonial manuscript map of northwestern Pennsylvania.

"A collection of voyages and relations of experiences by travelers from the time of the Portuguese navigators to the middle of the eighteenth century, including those of Magellan, Drake, Cavendish, Olivier van Noort, William Dampier, Woodes Rogers, John Clipperton, George Anson, and Lionel Wafer" - Hill. This is the supposed third edition, after editions of 1768 and 1769, but the identical collation and variation in 1770 titlepages suggests that there is one printing of text with variant title leaves.

Twelve Months of Flowers (set of 12 engravings)

Robert Sayer and John King 1770 - Robert Furber (c. 1674-1756, publisher) Twelve Months of Flowers (set of 12 engravings) Set of 12 Hand-colored copperplate engravings by R. Sheppard London, Robert Sayer and John King, c. 1770 15 ½” x 20” framed, each Originally published as a catalog of plants and flowers for sale out of his Kensington nursery, Robert Furber envisioned this project as a complete departure from the modest pamphlets usually produced by floriculturists of the day. The twelve lavishly illustrated plates represent nearly 400 different species of flowers grouped according to the month in which they bloom. The compositions reflect the grand style of the Baroque period, with the flowers arranged in perfected bouquets, set in decorative and stylized urns resting on a plinth. Each flower is numbered to correspond with the legend printed at the bottom of the plate flanking either side of the cartouche identifying the month of the year. Visualized as a flower catalogue, the scale of the endeavor quickly grew as Furber collaborated with renowned Dutch artist Pieter Casteels (1684-1749) to do the illustrations. Casteels had emigrated from Antwerp to England, where he gained great acclaim as a painter of birds and flowers. It is uncertain whether the Twelve Months of Flowers actually bolstered the sales of seeds and flowers at Furber's nursery, but the popularity of these gorgeous prints was so great that the catalogue was reprinted numerous times and in various sizes throughout the Eighteenth century. As a result, the original intention for these plates was eclipsed as they are primarily admired for their beautiful, decorative quality. Published by Sayer, this is a very rare later version of the set of twelve months, re-engraved yet again, but to a size that is mid-way between the folio and the quarto issue.

Venice: Apud Nicolaum Pezzana, 1770 - A truly magnificent and well-preserved example of this genre of liturgical printing, which, in design and format, carried on with the manuscript tradition, but which, by the late 18th century, had already become impractical. An Inquiry into the Principles of Political Oeconomy

Dublin: James Williams and Richard Moncrieffe, 1770 Three volumes, octavo, contemporary pale Irish calf, contemporary dark red labels lettered and numbered gilt, slight wear to head and tails of volume II, pp. (4) + (8) + iii-xii + (6) + 426 + (2)adverts; (32) + 424; (8) + 431 + folding table of coins + (20), a fine and attractive copy.Kress 6760. Goldsmith 10611. Higgs 4854. Blaug, Great Economists before Keynes, pp.241-242. Schumpeter, History of Economic Analysis, p.176.First Dublin edition. The first important English work on political economy. James Steuart (1712-1780) is represented as someone who produced a systematic treatment of economics, but in pre-Physiocratic form. Although his book was first published in 1767, the main elements of the argument were established in isolation in Germany in the late 1750?s. The Principles is dominated by a concern with a socio-economic system in a situation where different national economies have different growth rates. Both perspectives ensured that the book was largely concerned with matters of economic policy, and have given the misleading claim that Steuart was a mercantilist. Steuart was particularly worried about population growth and his views bear an uncanny resemblance to the later views of Malthus.David Hume is reported as being critical of the ?form and style? of the work but ?exceedingly pleased? with it as an ?ingenious performance? when he looked it over in manuscript in 1766. Whilst Steuart?s interventionist economic principles provoked Adam Smith to refute them in The Wealth of Nations, recent commentary has emphasized the continuity in Scottish economic thought from David Hume to James Steuart to Adam Smith.Marx noticed him and he gradually enjoyed some attention from the members of the German Historical School in the 19th Century who appreciated his historical bent and his belief that economic development must be consciously managed by the state. More recently he has been hailed as a forerunner of the ?economics of control? and the concept of development planning. This three volume Irish printing is rarely seen for sale.

Genuine Copies of all the Love Letters and Cards which passed between an Illustrious Personage and a Noble Lady, during the course of a Late Amour. Published by a proctor of Doctors Commons.

Printed for L. Browning ? 1770 - pp. [i], 35, 8vo, disbound, good A juicy scandal. ‘Cumberland had been intended by his brother for a sober career as a naval officer but it was becoming clear that he was to be remembered for less reputable exploits. In early 1769 he began a sexual relationship with Harriet, née Vernon (d. 1828), wife of Richard, first Baron Grosvenor. They were often seen in public together and attracted speculation and the fury of Lord Grosvenor. A little before 2 a.m. on 22 December 1769 Grosvenor’s servants discovered Cumberland and Lady Grosvenor in bed together at the White Hart inn, St Albans. Grosvenor pursued the matter in the courts and on 5 July 1770 Cumberland was tried for criminal conversation with Lady Grosvenor. Despite the best efforts of his counsel, John Dunning, to show that the testimony of Grosvenor’s agents was doubtful and supporting evidence circumstantial, the court found against Cumberland and he was ordered to pay damages of £10,000 to Grosvenor. This damaged the duke’s already precarious financial position and he borrowed £12,000 from a grudging king. A rash of books and pamphlets was published to exploit the affair, including a collection of the couple’s correspondence which exposed Cumberland’s adolescent expressions of emotion and his uncertain grammar to ridicule’ (ODNB). 3 copies only located in ESTC: BL, Huntington and Texas; also a single copy only of the version with T. Browne’s imprint, UPenn. (ESTC T110817)

AT THE END OF THE NINTH YEAR, MDCCLXVIII .

Oxford, Cambridge & London: Sold by Mr. Fletcher & Prince . [et al], 1770 - 1761. - Nine volumes bound in one. 206,[2-(blank)]; 16;19,[1];17,[7];[16];[20];[20];[20];18pp. Octavo. Modern pedestrian half- calf and cloth, gilt label. First work somewhat foxed, with small ink shelf numbers on first three leaves; latter works crisp and clean, with interesting mss annotations in each (see below). Bookseller's annotation (in ink!) on rear pastedown. First editions. Kennicott (1718-1783), an able biblical scholar and linguist, began in 1751 a methodical examination of the manuscript and printed sources for the Hebrew text of the Old Testament. After earning the sponsorship of Thomas Secker, the scope of the undertaking expanded, and included a 1760 'Proposal' for the publication by subscription of a revised text based on his findings. Eventually, he collated 615 manuscript versions and 52 printed editions, reporting to his subscribers and recording new subscriptions in the form of the annual fascicles bound here at the end (wanting the reports for the 2nd and 10th years). The undertaking culminated in the publication of his VETUS TESTAMENTUM HEBRAICUM (2 vols, Oxford 1776 - 80), to both praise and controversy. An early hand has tabulated the total value of the subscriptions in each of the eight annual reports; it is possible that this was the work of one "Rev. M. Turner," one of the subscribers, as affixed to the front pastedown is a preserved original binder's blank bearing a presentation inscription: "D. Turner gives This Book to the Library of the Academy at Bristol under the care of the Revd, Mr. Evans." Darlow & Moule note these annual reports under their entry for the published text, and record that subscriptions finally totaled nearly 10,000. While the main work is not uncommon, the annual reports appear to be so, at least in North American institutions, where ESTC locates three copies of the first, one of the third and fourth, none of the fifth or sixth, two of the seventh and four of the eighth. Histoire de poissons contenant la déscription anatomique de leurs parties externes et internes, & le caractere des divers genres rangés pas classe et par ordres.

Amand Konig,, Strasbourg: 1770 - 4to. [vi], xviii, [iii], 252, [3] pp. With 4 folding engraved plates. Contemporary paper-covered boards, rebacked; a fine copy. First edition of this very interesting work on the anatomy of fishes, in Latin and French on opposite pages. Gouan's history basically consists of full anatomical descriptions, with engravings by Weiss from Gouan's illustrations. Of particular interest are his remarkable observations on muscular movement. The descriptive classification of fish were probably intended as an introduction to a true general natural history of ichthyology. The book was quite popular both in France and following its translation into German.Goüan (1733-1821), a physician and professor of botany at Montpellier, was one of the first proponents in France of Linnaeus' methods and nomenclature. As a strict follower of the Linnaean school he only paid attention to exterior characters. According to Pietsch, it should be noted that the anatomy he gives includes a myology rather new for the time. [Attributes: First Edition]
