Cobbleriana. Consisting of Essays, Letters, &c. Moral, Political and Humerous, In Prose and Verse. With a stroke at some Eminent Characters of the Present Times. By a Cobbler of Drury Lane.

C.D. Piguenit, London 1769 - Two volumes. London: C.D. Piguenit, 1769. 12mo. [xxii],xxxii,252; [xii],261,[1]pp. Engraved frontispiece. Volume one consists of an epistolary novel, written in a facetious style; volume two of essays, poems, and letters. The similarly titled (but differently spelled) "Cobleriana; Or, The Cobler's medley. Being a choice collection of the Miscellaneous Pieces, in Prose and Verse, Serious and Comic, of Johnson the Cobler, of Drury Lane" - two volumes, London: J. Wilkie, 1768 - has twelve ESTC locations. The work offered (not in ESTC), apparently a piracy of Cobleriana with the title misspelled, has a single OCLC location (Berkeley). Neatly bound in contemporary half-calf, crimson lettering-pieces, gilt lettering and decoration, raised bands, marbled boards. Touch of rubbing to extremities. Occasional slight foxing. A very good copy. (**This book will require special carriage arrangements* - to order this book PLEASE CONTACT US for a prior shipping quote & further information). Very light, mild foxing throughout. Both Tables are in excellent condition. VERY GOOD. "Blackstone's great work on the laws of England is the extreme example of justification of an existing state of affairs by virtue of its history. Until the Commentaries, the ordinary Englishman had viewed the law as a vast, unintelligible and unfriendly machine. Blackstone's great achievement was to popularize the law and the traditions which had influenced its formation. He takes a delight in describing and defending as the essence of the constitution the often anomalous complexities which had grown into the laws of England over the centuries. But he achieves the astonishing feat of communicating this delight, and this is due to a style which is itself always lucid and graceful.". 4to - over 9" - 12" tall

Paris, Saillant & Nyon/ Desaint, 1769-1782. 4 volumes bound in 12. Folio (445 x 290mm). With 250 folding engraved plates. Later half calf, gilt ornamented spines with blue label. First edition. A rare complete copy of 'one of the finest works on fishing and fisheries in any language' (Westwood p. 82). This superbly illustrated work with large folding plates shows marine- as well as freshwater fishing, all kinds of fishing equipment, different types of fishing boats, as well as fishermen and their dresses of the various French regions. About half the plates show marine or freshwater fishes. Most of the plates have scenic backgrounds. Henri Louis Duhamel (1700-1782) was an exponent of the French enlightenment and wrote quite a number of books of scientific as well of economic interest. In 1732 he was appointed 'inspecteur généneral de la marine'. This large monument on fishes and fishing shows the enormous economic importance of this branch of industry. The publication was an integral part of the 'Descriptions des Arts et Métiers' and was often sold separately. "The scientific interests of Duhamel were broad. While he was concerned with the descriptions of the handicrafts of candle-making and the refining of sugar of those or the locksmith, the slater, and the maker of playing cards, and although we are likely impressed by the extensive treatise on fishes and commercial fishing which forms a part of the 'Descriptions', his fame rests perhaps largely upon his studies in agriculture and the allied field of forestry... Duhamel du Monceau presents a figure of the benign scientist such as one encounters all too rarely in cultural history" (Cole & Watts,'The handicrafts of France as recorded in the Descriptions des Arts et Métiers 1761-1788', pp. 12-13). Complete copies should have 250 plates. Our copy has one plate double and 2 variant plates, these are not included in the total count of 250 plates. Nissen quotes 248 in error. Nissen, 'Schöne Fischbücher' 52; Dean 338; Cole & Watts pp. 28-29.

The Holy Bible, Containing the Old Testament and the New; with the Apocrypha: Translated out of the Original Tongues, with Annotations.

Birmingham; printed by John Baskerville, 1769-1772. Folio. 43x27,5 cm. Frontispiece, 572 leaves + 9 plates. Tan cloth on boards backed with dark red morocco with six raised bands; according to pencil notation the volume was rebound by John Cuthbert at Guildhall Library in 1980. The frontispiece and the title have neatly repaired corners; the latter is a trifle soiled. An early owner's pen notations on verso of the third plate. A minimal hole in the text on leaf 10E. A short tear in lower margin of leaf 11T has been sewn together with thread. A tissue paper has been mounted on the verso of leaf 13K as reinforcement. There are recurring dampstains in top and outer margins, cornerfolds, light stains in margins, and a few short tears. The text and plates are generally clean and bright. With the variant title leaf dated 1772, and the N. T. title leaf dated 1771. ''The book was issued in parts, starting in January 1769, the earlier state of the title-page being issued in the first part; it was probably reprinted in 1772 for use when the book was sold complete.'' (Gaskell). The copperplates are signed by the artists J. M. Moreau le jeune, F. Hayman, C. Vanloo and J. Jouvenet; and by the engravers Westwood, I. Taylor, Le Grand, J. Caldwell, and Hicks. Second edition of Baskerville's Folio Bible, the first edition published in 1763. ''Always regarded as Baskerville's magnum opus, and his most magnificent as well as his most characteristic specimen'' (Reed, A History of the Old English Letter Foundries, pp. 279, referring to the 1763 edition). The copy has apparently been used as a family bible; bound in at rear is a torn leaf showing that the bible has been handed down in the Bird family. One of the earliest entries, not dated, says ''James Bird married to Sarah Roberts Angus'', and the next ''Ann Bird born June 8 1779 at seven o'clock / in the morning died...'' Several entries contain news on children who have died shortly after their birth, until the mentioning of ''Hannah Bird born September 23 1783 at six o'clock in the morning / Christened at Whitechapel Church in October''. Her signature, on contemporary paper, has been mounted on the front paste-down, together with an old spine label (presumably from the previous binding of this book). According to several genealogical websites consulted, Hannah Birds date of death is unknown, but it is stated that she married a James Waering in St. Anne Soho in the year 1800. The further provenance of this book is unknown to us. Gaskell, John Baskerville. A Bibliography 35

        Of Bandages in General.

1769.. 12mo, (ii [Title]), 6, 9-106, (5) pp, pages numbers written to top corners with some error, one leaf (pp7/8) lacking, a few small diagrams in the text, some light marks and browning, modern booklabel of Melvin Edward Jahn on paste down, contemporary quarter calf, sides worn. A well preserved pocket book containing a knowledgeable essay on bandages. Starting with a chapter on the basics - their uses, composition and advantages in aiding recovery - it continues with short accounts of how to apply them to all parts of the body from the "Uniting Bandage of the Forehead" and "The Simple Ocular Band" to bandages for "A Luxation of the Elbow" and "The Sandal, or Pastoral Lacques" (for the ankle). In all 56 examples are discussed. Written throughout in a clear hand with larger bold titles, this would seem to be the work of an anonymous but skilled practitioner.

Mezzotint portrait by Johann Jacob Haid

1769. Trew, Christoph Jacob (1695-1769). Mezzotint portrait by Johann Jacob Haid (1704-67). N.p. [Nuremberg], 1769 or after. 531 x 356 mm. (image measures 406 x 268 mm.). Margins a little frayed (not affecting image), a few small marginal tears repaired, but very good.Excellent mezzotint portrait of German physician and botanist Christoph Jacob Trew, after whom the East Indian plant genus Trewia is named. Trew was the author of the lavishly illustrated Hortus nitidissimis omnem per annum superbiens floribus (1750-86) and Plantae selectae quarum imagines ad exemplaria naturalia Londini, in hortis curiosorum nutrita (1750-73), both with plates engraved after drawings by the noted 18th century botanical artist Georg Dionysius Ehret; the latter work has been described as "one of the great botanical iconographies" (Lazarus and Pardoe, p. 43). The present portrait appeared as a frontispiece to the Plantae selectae. Trew founded the periodical Commercium litterarium ad rei et medicinae scientiae naturalis, one of the first general medical journals, and from 1743 served as director of the Kaiserlich-Leopoldinisch-Carolingischen Akademie der Naturforscher. Trew's scientific correspondence, numbering over 19,000 letters, is the largest such collection known; his natural history library of 34,000 volumes is now at the University of Erlangen.

Original wrappers, glassine. Uncut, xiv, 777 p., and table. Illustrated with 17 hand-colored engraved plates by Follet of characters in the plays of Picard, and a portrait of Picard himself as frontispiece; all full-length. Small tear on cover, l.l., but overall a fine copy. Louis Baptiste Picard (1769-1828) was one of the few successful dramatists of France under Napoleon. After studying law, he became an actor, author and manager. Napoleon found in him an "unquenchable gaiety." Picard excelled in depicting bourgeois and provincial interiors. His play La Petite Ville (1801) went on to England as The Merry Widow. He was founder of the Odéon, second only to the comédie-Française in importance. His many comedies show an indebtedness to Beaumarchais, yet stay free from a deeper satire. In 1897 he qualified for the Légion d'Honneur and the French Academy.

Genova, 1769. Incisione in rame all'acquaforte, b/n, cm 50,5 x 75 (il foglio). L'Autore (Genova, 1721).

Institutes of Moral Philosophy. For the use of students in the College of Edinburgh

Edinburgh: A. Kincaid & J. Bell, 1769 First edition. Contemporary calf, rubbed. Twelvemo. Corners worn, rebacked in recent calf, with contrasting lettering and dating labels, hinges strengthened. Signature of Rev. John Brown (1784-1858) of the United Presbyterian College, with the institution's later bookplate. Small wormholes to title and short tear to half-title repaired, else very clean and crisp. In 1764, Ferguson took up the Chair of Ethics and Pneumatical Philosophy at the University of Edinburgh, having previously held the Chair of Natural Philosophy (from 1759). A short conspectus of his lectures was published in 1761, and Institutes of Moral Philosophy in 1769. The lectures were very popular not only with students but with members of the Edinburgh intelligentsia, and they became a standard university text in Russia and Germany. Institutes was also one of about a dozen books by Scottish authors (of a total of 550) that James Madison selected for importation into America in 1782 for the library of the U.S. Congress. It also elucidates suggestions and innovations in Ferguson's Essay on the History of Civil Society, published two years previously, in 1767.
