A Collection of Original Papers Relative to the History of the Colony of Massachusets-Bay. [Massachusetts]

Boston, New-England: Thomas and John Fleet, 1769. First Edition. Full-Leather. Very Good/No Jacket. First edition. Ebenezer Hazard's copy, and later his son Erskine's, with both of their names in ink on the title page. Ebenezer's name shows more oxidation, indicating that his son's name was written later, likely at the time the book was passed down to him. Boards rubbed with tiny chip from spine head, discolored patch on front board, tiny ink stamp on rear endpaper. 1769 Full-Leather. ii, 576 pp. 8vo. A^2, B^8-2O^8. Original full calf, gilt titles & rules. An important copy of a work preserving documents the originals of which are largely lost (see below). This copy belonged to Ebenezer Hazard, who compiled and published the first printed collection of American state papers in a two-volume work released in 1792. He likely used it as a primary reference, as the originals of works reproduced her would no longer have been available at the time he was compiling his work. Sabin 34069: "This collection of papers was published by Lieut.- Gov. Hutchinson, 'to support and elucidate the principal facts related in the first part of the of the History of Massachusetts Bay, and may serve as an appendix to it.' 'The author of that History was possessed of many other ancient and very curious original papers, which are irrecoverably lost by an unfortunate event sufficiently known.' (This alludes to the destruction of his papers by a mob, at the time of the Riots in Boston on account of the Stamp Act, in 1765.)' - Rich. It is sometimes erroneously bound up and lettered as Vol. III. of the 'History.' It is a necessary adjunct to Hutchinson's 'History of Massachusetts Bay'". Howes H-853. Evans 11300. "Ebenezer Hazard (1744-1817, APS 1781) was a publisher, businessman, an editor of historical documents and Postmaster-General of the United States. His two-volume work Historical Collections: Consisting of State Papers and Other Authentic Documents: Intended As Materials for An History of the United States of America (Philadelphia, 1792-1794) was the first published collection of American state papers and historical documents. His duties as surveyor-general of the post office (1777-1782) entailed extensive travel, and he took advantage of the opportunity to collect the documentary evidence and source-materials of early American history. In response to his petition to the Continental Congress on July 11, 1778, he was given permission to copy documents in the Continental archives, as well as a grant of one thousand dollars for expenses. He collected most of these materials before 1782, when he became Postmaster-General. The first two volumes entitled Historical Collections were published in Philadelphia from 1792-1794." - American Philosophical Society

The great painter Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792) and the dashing soldier, dramatist and politician John Burgoyne (1722-1792) were immortally linked in 1766 when Reynolds painted the vigorous and romantic portrait of 'Gentleman Johnny' in the scarlet uniform of the 16th Light Dragoons that now hangs in the Frick Collection in New York. By 1791 Burgoyne was far past his military and political activities and was enjoying great success as a playwright. Dublin-born Peter Mequignon (1769-1826) was a student at the School of Painting at the Royal Academy from 1788 to the mid 1790s. He painted portraits and dramatic subjects in London and Dublin but left no mark on the history of art.

[Attributes: Hard Cover]

Octavo, (110 x 163mm). 6 pamphlets (dated 1746,1747,1748 1748,1747,1769) and 18 pages of manuscript notes, pp. [xvi]blank, 94, 8, 3-45, [2]blank, 3-12, 3-13, 3-28, [18], [16]blank. Each pamphlet has its own title pagewith engraved royal arms , and apart from introductory paragraphs and marginal notes, the text are printed in black letter. The window tax - introducd in 1696 was an unpopular tax on windows and arguably a precursor to income tax - the richer the person, the bigger the house, the more windows, the more tax they pay- a way of taxing according to income without intruding into personal finances. Some hold it to be the origin of the phrase ' Daylight robbery' . This book contains several mid18th Century parliamentary acts concerning the Window Tax and a few leaves of manuscript notes about the rates and means of collecting the tax, and appeal procedures (possibly written by someone with the onerous task of visiting houses to count their windows and assess them).

Theatre de L. B. Picard, de l'Academie Francaise

(Picard, Louis Baptiste, 1769-1828). Fournier, Edouard. Original wrappers, glassine. Uncut, xiv, 777pp., and table. Illustrated with 17 hand-colored engraved plates by Follet of characters in the plays of Picard, and a portrait of Picard himself as frontispiece; all full-length. Small tear on cover, l.l., but overall a fine copy. Louis Baptiste Picard (1769-1828) was one of the few successful dramatists of France under Napoleon. After studying law, he became an actor, author and manager. Napoleon found in him an "unquenchable gaiety." Picard excelled in depicting bourgeois and provincial interiors. His play La Petite Ville (1801) went on to England as The Merry Widow. He was founder of the Odeon, second only to the comedie-Francaise in importance. His many comedies show an indebtedness to Beaumarchais, yet stay free from a deeper satire. In 1897 he qualified for the Legion d'Honneur and the French Academy.

        The Pleasures of Imagination

London - J. Dodsley, 1769. London - J. Dodsley, 1769 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Leatherbound volume with marble paper covered boards. Mark Akenside (November 9, 1721 June 23, 1770), was an English poet and physician. During a visit to Morpeth in 1738, he had the idea for his didactic poem, 'The Pleasures of Imagination', which was well received, and was subsequently translated into more than one foreign language. He had already acquired a considerable literary reputation when he came to Londonnear the end of 1743 and offered the work to Robert Dodsley for 120. Dodsley thought the price exorbitant, and only accepted the terms after submitting the manuscript to Alexander Pope, who assured him that this was no everyday writer. The three books of this poem appeared in January 1744. His aim, Akenside tells us in the preface, was not so much to give formal precepts, or enter into the way of direct argumentation, as, by exhibiting the most engaging prospects of nature, to enlarge and harmonize the imagination, and by that means insensibly dispose the minds of men to a similar taste and habit of thinking in religion, morals and civil life. Condition: The binding is tight and firm with both covers and all pages attached although the front hinge is strained and the leather is cracked. There is some wear to the extremities including rubbing to the boards and some peeling to the leather on the spine. The spine label is beginning to peel away. Internally the pages are generally clean and bright with the occasional handling mark and isolated spot. Overall the volume is in very good condition..

Miscellaneous Works in Verse and Prose, of the Late Right Honourable Joseph AddisonIn Four Volumes

Edinburgh - J. Robertson, 1769. Edinburgh - J. Robertson, 1769 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A scarce set ofuniformly bound anthologies containing the works of poet and playwright Joseph Addison. Including an account of the life and writings of the author by Mr Tickell. Bound to volume three isThree sets of Medals, Illustrated by the Ancient Poets which includes thirty plates, one of which is folding. Collation presumed complete. As well as The Present State of the War and the Necessity of an Augmentation Considered. Joseph Addison was an English essayist, poet, playwright and politician. He was a man of letters, eldest son of Lancelot Addison. His name is usually remembered alongside that of his long-standing friend, Richard Steele, with whom he founded The Spectator magazine. Volume two contains Addison's most famous work of fiction Cato, a Tragedy. The play was a success throughout Britain and its possessions in the New World, as well as Ireland. It continued to grow in popularity, especially in the American colonies, for several generations. Indeed, it was almost certainly a literary inspiration for the American Revolution, being well known to many of the Founding Fathers. In fact, George Washington had it performed for the Continental Army while they were encamped at Valley Forge. Among the founders, according to John J. Miller, no single work of literature may have been more important than Cato. Complete in four volumes. Condition: In vellum bindings with gilt numbering to the spines. Externally, all are a trifle rubbed with shelfwear to the head and tail of spines. Volume two has a different works spine label. Joints to volume two are starting, with the front hinges of volumes one and three being slightly strained but firm. Internally, all are firmly bound, pages have some marginal age toning, with intermittently clean pages, and the occasional spot. Overall: GOOD..
