His account of this journey which occupies both parts of the first volume describes the meteorology, climate, fauna and minerals of the region, and also gives a sociological commentary. Though the publication received a warm welcome in France, it is said to have angered the Empress Catherine the Great for its unflattering description of Russian mores. COOK, James; J. C. Beaglehoe, editor.
Cambridge, Hakluyt Society, C.U.P., 1967, 1968, 1969,1974, 1768. 4 volumes in 5, royal 8vo, 1 volume portfolio atlas, with 2 addenda and corigenda booklets, numerous maps and illustrations throughout, original blue cloth gilt, light soiling and chipping to wrappers, an excellent set. Hakluyt Society extra series 34a, 34b, 35, 36a, 36b, 37. This publication represents the first time that Cook's journals were comprehensively and accurately presented to the public, and to do so required enormous research since copies and fragments of the journals and related material were scattered in various archives in London, Australia and New Zealand. For his edition, Beaglehole sought out the various surviving holographs in Cook's own hand in preference to copies by his clerks on board ship, and others. As well as Cook's own journals Beaglehole also printed, either entire or in lengthy extracts, the journals of several of Cook's colleagues on the voyages. The introductions themselves, together with copious footnotes, reveal the breadth of his erudition. They cover many topics, ranging from the structure of Polynesian society to oceanography, navigation, cartography, and much else. Hill 86 (Life) & 367.

London: Printed for S. Bladon, , 1768. London: Printed for S. Bladon, 1768 First London edition. Three English language translations were printed in 1768, one in London, one in Dublin, and one in Glasglow. No priority has been established for any of the three. All have different collations and none name a translator. Contemporary brown calf with a gilt-lettered brown morocco spine label. Edges sprinkled red. . Octavo. Binding extremities lightly rubbed. Front hinge slightly cracked, but sound. Engraved armorial bookplate on front pastedown. A fine copy. Voltaire's (1694-1778) L'Ingénu is a satricial novella first published in 1767. It tells the story of a Huron, a Native American of the Wyandot people, who, after having crossed the Atlantic to England, travels to Brittany, France in the 1690s. Having lived his life outside of European culture, he perceives the world in a different way, which often leads to comic misinterpretations. The novella also criticizes the contemporary corruption of the French government. L'Ingénu blends several different genres; it shares characteristics with the "conte philosophique" and the novel. Thematically, Volatire's novella advocates deism and lambasts intolerance, fanaticism, superstition, sects, and the Catholic clergy.

MERLIN COCCAIE (Théophile Folengo, dit)
(1768) Brunet 1319.

PFEFFEL VON KRIEGELSTEIN (Christian Friedrich)
