London: D. Henry, 1768. One of the more extraordinary volumes from this noted series, packed with information pertaining to the stirrings in the American colonies that would soon erupt into revolution. Benjamin Franklin's Magic Square and Magic Circle are among the very fine plates; seems Franklin, dabbler of all dabblers, tried his hand at mathematics as well. Many pages devoted to the Stamp Act & other dramatic news from the colonies, the Boston Convention & News from Faneuil-Hall, John Hancock, Taxes, General Gage, Gen. Bernard, Virginia, Maryland, Hadley's Quadrant, Inoculation, Trade with America & other colonies, Indian Tribes, a Masquerade Party, Anatomy - Skulls, Fetus, American Armadillo, &c. All 20 engravings are present, the volume is complete, and most handsome with a gorgeous vellum spine over marbled boards. Boards show some wear and rubbing but all, inside and out, is steady, strong, clean and neat. One of the cleanest volumes from this series I have yet encountered, a real beauty, though a heavyweight as well, with astonishing po … [Click Below for Full Description]

BOSWELL, James
I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. "First edition of James Boswell's book supporting the Island of Corsica's defense of invasion and desire to be free form Genoese rule., and accounts of his befriending Pasquale Paoli" A rare first edition of James Boswell's "Account of Corsica". According to Lowndes, this printing is the "first and uncastrated edition". This book was the work that gained Boswell fame. He supported the Corsican government and took "childish pleasure in being the chief sponsor of this wild island struggling to become a nation" (Cox I, 138). According to Pierce, "Following the island's invasion by France, in 1768, Boswell attempted to raise public awareness and rally support for the Corsicans. He sent arms and money to the Corsican fighters, and made an arduous and dangerous journey to Corsica to meet General Pasquale Paoli, leader of the insurgents seeking the island's independence from the Genoese. Paoli at first suspected [Boswell] was a spy, but quickly came to like his improbable young visitor, saw an opportunity for promotion of the Corsican cause in Britain, and consented to a series of interviews..." The book includes his observations of government, religion, military arms, commerce, education, and Boswell's experiences while traveling through Corsica. This most-popular second state includes "very rare half-title" (Rothschild 442), a beautiful copper vignette on title, and a large folding copper map of the island of Corsica. This work was widely read and translated - 7000 copies, in two editions, w … [Click Below for Full Description]

This is the first of the important Hawkesworth editions, lacking Volume IX and the supplementary Volume XIV which were published in 1775 and 1779 respectively, the last of the volumes printed. Given the nearly 25-year span over which the printing took place it is remarkably difficult to find sets of this edition complete. Volumes I-VI (1755); VII (1763-4); VIII (1765); X-XI (1766); XII-XIII (1768); [lacking Volumes IX (1775) and XIV (1779)]. Full bound in contemporary mottled calf with morocco title and volume labels (through numbered I-XII) with some chipping and loss. 19th century rebacks to some volumes; more recently, damage to spines and boards have been repaired; though there is cracking and tenderness to some spines, they are now relatively stable. JEFFERYS, Thomas
London: Robert Sayer, 1768. unbound. very good. Map in two sheets. Engraving with hand colored outline. Each image measures 21" x 54.25". This large map of India shows the area during the period of growing British presence in the mid-18th century. It is dedicated to the East India Company, which had gained control over the Bengal region by 1765, only a few years prior to the maps publication. One of the largest English-language maps of India of the period, it was also the most detailed that had yet to been produced, with particular attention given to the wide road network developing at the time. However, there is also a large portion of the country that remains little known and in a manner independent--such that the map shows a fascinating visual contrast between known information and blank space. The map is in very good condition with minor overall toning and slight dampstaining. A few small tears to edges, expert reinforcements to original folds. Thomas Jefferys (c. 1719-1771), was an English cartographer who worked as Geographer to King George III. As a prominent map supplier of his day, he produced cartographic works in both official and commercial capacities. This map of India describes a pivotal moment in the regions history.

Illustrated with a New and Accurate Map of Corsica. Octavo (220 x 150 mm). Original boards, uncut. Housed in a black quarter pebble-grained morocco solander box. Large engraved folding map of Corsica (in the first state, without the imprint, and in an excellent, strong impression); engraved rococo title vignette incorporating the Moor's Head arms of Corsica. First edition of Boswell's first important publication; "with its reports of the gallant islanders and a Plutarchan depiction of [General Pascal] Paoli paralleled with several classical heroes, it was an immediate success. The work was widely read and translated, stimulated great interest in Paoli and the Corsican cause, brought its author wide fame in Britain and Europe, and found an interested readership among the Americans. It attracted the notice of the French government (which had a translation made), and though Boswell's ambition for British intervention was not to be fulfilled, he probably influenced Britain's decision to send secret supplies of arms to … [Click Below for Full Description]

Ethnological study on 19th century Brazil. Monumental first limited edition of the famous drawings on Brazil by the French artist Jean-Baptiste Debret (1768-1848). The work compiles previously unpublished drawings by the painter of the Portuguese Imperial court in Brazil, who became renowned for his depictions of the Brazilian people. Debret's picturesque paintings testify and document customs, costumes, daily life of the colonizers, slaves, Indians, scenes and social relations among the Brazilians. The original drawings belonged to the heirs of the painter. They were acquired in 1939 by the Brazilian magnate Raymundo Ottoni de Castro Maya with the assistance of the Parisian art dealer Roberto Heymann. The paintings were published under his patronage most for the first time in this edition. A luxurious elephant folio size publication including 140 drawings printed on Arche paper, totalling 100 plates beautifully coloured by hand by the pochoir process. Noteworthy also to mention that the text was composed by hand with types specially produced for the edition. The printing process initiated in 1953 took two years to complete. The present specimen is one of ten specially distributed out of commerce, lettered "C", printed and addressed individually to "Monsieur Alain Radiguer". Author: Debret, Jean-Baptiste. John Dickinson & Ben Franklin
J. Almon. Up for sale is a book (without a cover), "Letters From a Farmer in Pennsylvania to the Inhabitants of the British Colonies". The twelve essays or letters were written by John Dickinson, a Pennsylvania lawyer and legislator. The book was published/printed in 1768 in London, which is significant. The English edition of this book contains a preface "The British Editor to the Reader" which was written by Benjamin Franklin. The American edition did not carry this preface. (According to a type written short note tucked into this copy of the book). It's 118 pages long. The letters were Dickson's written objections to the Townshend Acts, an English law which required the Colonies to pay certain taxes. Incredibly rare piece of colonial history just prior to the Revolutionary War. As mentioned above the book has no cover. The pages are clean, slightly tan but very flexible due to the cotton content of the paper minor wear at the edges. US buyers only, $4.00 shipping. Payment is due at the time of the purchase. A music lover before being a philosopher, Rousseau was entrusted, by Diderot and Alembert in 1749, with articles from the Encyclopédie dealing with music; a key experience in the writing of this Dictionnaire that in 1754 was first thought of as a means to rectify the encyclopaedic entries that had been written in haste. The entries, developed according to Rousseau's encyclopaedic and philosophical concerns, are marked by the author's critical reflections and are embellished with engraved illustrations at the end of the volume, allowing a parallel reading of the definitions.
