        Tom Jones, A Comic Opera

Dublin: Printed for W. and W. Smith et al. Leather Bound. Good. 1768-1789. 5 items. 68, 82, 72, 40, 59 p. 17 cm. Full leather, spine label missing, corners bumped. Bookplate and signature on front endpapers. Like other self-educated men, Reed formed an unwarrantably high opinion of his own literary achievements. But he had a caustic wit, and wrote with much energy. Farquar is usually classed among the writers of English Restoration comedy, though he stands a little apart from them, both chronologically and in showing more variety of plot, depth of feeling, and, in his later and best plays, a more conscious effort to adapt the licentiousness of the early comedy of manners to the changing taste of the time. Cumberland turned to writing drama because he needed the money. Kelly wrote pieces which at the time eclipsed his literary rival, Goldsmith. -- "as it is Performed at the Theatre-Royal in Covent Garden; The Recruiting Officer. A Comedy; The Imposters: A Comedy Performed at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane; The Romance of a Hour, A Comedy in Two Acts, As it is performed with universal applause at Theatre-Royal, Covernt-Garden; Midas; an English Burletta.

Avignon, Veuve Girard & Francois Seguin, 1768. 8vo. Contemp. full mottled calf. Wear to top of spine. Richly gilt spine, titlelabel with gilt lettering. (2),XXXI,380 pp. and 8 folded engraved plates. On verso of title-page a stamped exlibris. On inside frontcover an engraved exlibris "John Cookney". Internally clean, printed on good paper.. This edition of the first treatise on the differential calculus, first published 1696, is the first with the commentaries by the famous French astronomer Nicolas-Louis De Lacaille, taken from his noted "Leçons élémentaires de mathématiques"."The Analyse des infiniment petits was the first textbook of the differential calculus. The existence of several commentaries on it - one by Varignon (1725) - attests to its popularity. The question of its intellectual ownership has been much debated. Jean Bernoulli, who is known to have instructed L'Hospital in the calculus about 1691, complained after L'Hospital's death that he (Bernoulli) had not been given enough credit for his contributions. L'Hospital himself, in the introduction to his books, freely acknowledges his indebtedness to Leibniz and to the Bernoulli brothers. On the other hand, he states that he regards the foundations provided by him as his own idea, although they also have been credited by some to Jean Bernoulli. However, these foundations can be found, less explicitly, also in Leibniz, although Leibniz made it clear that he did not accept L'Hospital's Platonistic views on the reality of infinitely small and infinitely large quantities."(DSB)

Jacob Johann Dillenius (1684-1747) was a British botanist of German birth, Sherardian professor of botany at Oxford. Third edition, the first was published in 1741. " 1741 he published his most important book, 'Historia muscorum', in which he introduced a new classification of the lower plants (some features of which system are still in use this day). In his desire to be definitive Dillenius put a prodigious amount of work into this book, which meets the high standards demanded by more modern taxonomy" (DSB)./"Les descriptions de Dillenius sont brèves mais l'illustration est bien plus précise que dans presque tous les ouvrages antérieurs, et de nombreux détails sont parfaitement identifiables (feuilles, opercules, coiffes, etc...).

Contemporary full calf, richly gilt decorated spines with 2 red gilt lettered labels, gilt edges. A fine copy of the first edition. The beautifull illustrations (after drawings by Aubriet, Basseporte, and Le Berriays) show an enormous variety of peaches, apples, prunes, stawberries, nuts, pears, vines, etc. in clear and strong impressions. Henri Louis Duhamel du Monceau (1700-1781), the famous French dendrologist, worked a.o. on animal and vegetable physiology. His botanical work may be regarded as the inception of forest botany. The above offered work was of great importance and is one of the finest and rarest books on fruits. According to this importance, a second and third edition appeared in 1782 and 1835; both with plain plates. The much augmented edition (by Poiteau & Turpin) with 422 coloured-printed plates was practically a new work.//"The outcome was 'Traité des arbres fruitiers....', Paris, 1768, in two quarto volumes with 180 engraved plates. Numerous cultivars of 16 fruit species are first characterized in Latin, then thoroughly described in French. Many illustrated in foliage, fruit, blossom, and seed. An engraved fruit-laden frontispiece carries the title 'Pomona gallica'... Du Hamel's dedication was admirable. In 1765, to describe just one cultivar, he rode 60 kilometers and back to view the original tree and fruit of the 'Bézi de Chaumontel' pear, which Merlet had seen and declared a novelty in 1675"(Janson, 'Pomona's Harvest' p. 290-293).//Nissen BBI, 550; Great Flower Books p. 55; Stafleu & Cowan 1546; Dunthorne 109;. Raphael, 'An Oak Spring Pomona' 28.

Gray (1716-71) English poet, "He excelled his contemporaries in meticulous workmanship and in ability to use new materials--medieval Welsh or Scandinavian--with dramatic imaginative power." Baugh. "His enthusiasm had been roused by the fragments of Gaelic poetry published by Macpherson in 1760. He did his best to believe in their authenticity and found himself in rather uncongenial alliance with Hume, whose skepticism was for once quenched by his patriotism. Gray's interest probably led him to his imitations from the Norse and Welsh. In 1767 Dodsley proposed to republish his poems in a cheap form. Foulis, a Glasgow publisher, made a similar proposal through Beattie at the same time. Dodsley's edition appeared in July 1768, and Foulis's in the following September. Both contained the same poems, including the Fatal Sisters, the Descent of Odin, and the Triumphs of Owen, then first published. Gray took no money, but accepted a present of books from Foulis." DNB.
