A view in Hudson's River of the Entrance of what is called the Topan Sea. Sketch'd on the SPOT by his Excellency Governor Pownal, Painted by Paul Sandby, Engraved by Peter Benazech

printed for John Bowles, Robert Sayer, Thos. Jefferys, Carington Bowles and Henry Parker, London 1768 - Copper engraving by Peter Benazech, after Pownall. This fine print from the famously rare Scenographia Americana series is after a drawing by Governor Pownall, colonial governor of Massachusetts. This idyllic scene depicts a portion of the Hudson known as the Tappan Zee, a long widening of the river that occurs about ten miles north of Manhattan. The artist, from a rather high elevation, looks north with the Palisades on his left and the rolling hills of Westchester on his right, where tiny farmhouses are just visible. The contrast between this place as it was and as it is now is, to say the least, astonishing. Published following the conclusion of the French and Indian War, and in a period of great public interest in the American colonies, the Scenographia Americana was the first book dedicated to a large-scale artistic depiction of the American landscape. From the Gulf of St. Lawrence to the West indies, the scenes include locations of battles, views of strategic provincial capitals, and newly secured areas of commercial importance. Just as clear is the celebration of nature's 'astonishingly great' expanse, to cite Pownall, great in width and in height. Here are harbors and rivers, cascades, forests and skies" (Hood). "The Scenographia Americana begins with views from Canada: Quebec City, the Montmorency Falls, Cape Rouge, the Gaspé, Rock Percé, the Miramichi Valley, Montreal, and Louisbourg . Then follow four views of cities in long-settled British North America: New York (twice), Boston, and Charleston. Next are four views of dramatic river landscapes in New York and New Jersey: the Jersey Palisades, the Catskills as seen from the Hudson, the Great Cohoes Falls on the Mohawk River, and the Passaic River Falls . The next two prints show the Moravian settlement at Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and an imaginary scene of an American farm . The rest of the series shifts to the Caribbean, with four views of the harbor and city of Havana, two street scenes of Havana, one view of the British attack on Roseau, Dominique, and three scenes around Guadeloupe (one of a battle and two of the British occupation forces) ." (Crowley). "The work is more than neatly done. All the prints are exceptionally well executed with respect to the original topographic projections as well as in the engraving of the plates. Five print publishers . were involved in promoting the series" (Deak). "These views are second in quantity only to those that appeared in the Atlantic Neptune . In quality they are second to none of the eighteenth century productions" (Fowble).

Treves: Imprimerie Electorale , 1768. Hardcover. Near Fine. Large 4to [25.5 x 19.5 cm]. (27) ff., pp. 1-132; 129-186, (5) folding plates, numerous woodcut illustrations in text, over 30 of them full-page. Bound in contemporary sprinkled calf, raised bands, gilt title label on spine, some scuffing to boards, upper board tender, edges sprinkled red, internally a very fresh copy with broad margins, excellent. Rare first and sole edition of this provincially published architectural treatise by an Alsatian architect seeking to promote his work in the wider cultural environment straddling the Franco-German language divide. The work was published in Trier five years after the completion of Antoine's most prestigious project to date, the hunting lodge Philippsfreude he built for the Palatine Elector Johann Philipp von Walderdorff (1761-63) in Wittlich, and which would be destroyed by French Revolutionary forces. The present work thus constitutes the principal, if not the only printed document for this building. Little information is available about Antoine, who identifies himself as chief architect and surveyor of the city of Metz. In the 1750s he worked on the abbey of St Vincent in that city which had been damaged by lightning, building two Gothic bays and a façade which incorporate elements of the three Greek orders. His design for a new Place Royale in the same city was however rejected. It was therefore something of a coup for Antoine to secure the contract for Philippsfreude, particularly since it meant ousting the official court architect of Trier, Johann Georg Seitz (1717-79). Antoine's Traité d'architecture is essentially a marketing ploy allowing him to present himself as an original architectural theorist, illustrating his arguments with the designs of his own projects, principally the façade of St. Vincent, his design for the Place Royale in Metz, and the castle in Wittlich, and exploiting the prestige of the French architectural tradition in a region which had yet to produce architecture of any distinction. The work also includes a 36-page index of architects from history and contemporary France with appropriate references to their theoretical writings, and a short treatise on the art of stone masonry, with illustrations of vaults, niches and so forth. Staircases receive a separate, detailed, treatment. Throughout, Antoine seizes every opportunity to emphasize the superiority of French architecture and take snipes at German building practices which he characterizes as heavy and inelegant. Antoine's obscurity today is partly due to the scarcity of remaining works of his: Philippsfreude was destroyed in 1793 in the context of the French Revolution, and all usable remains of the ruins were sold off under Napoleon. In some city records of Metz, the façade of St. Vincent is attributed to the architects Barlet and Louis, with no mention of Antoine's involvement. The work is not listed in OCLC, but we have located copies at the Getty and CCA. *BN record 04440090X; Getty record.

Printed document granting a "License to trade with the Nations or Tribes of Indians, with whom his Majesty is connected" signed by John Penn

Philadelphia, PA, October 28, 1768. 12" x 8". "Partly-printed Document Signed ""John Penn"" as Lieutenant-Governor, one page, oblong quarto (12"" x 8""), Philadelphia, October 28, 1768, countersigned by Joseph Shippen Jr. (1732-1810) Secretary to the Governor of Pennsylvania, granting a ""License to trade with the Nations or Tribes of Indians, with whom his Majesty is connected, and who live under his protection..."" unto Alexander Blaine of Carlisle, Pennsylvania. The license stipulated that Blaine was ""not to trade or traffick with; or vend, sell, or dispose, of any Goods, Wares or Merchandizes of any Kind whatever, to any Indian or Indians within the Country of any the Indian Nations aforesaid, beyond the Settlements of the Inhabitants, except at Fort Pitt & the Forts or Posts which are already, or shall hereafter by established by his Majesty, and garrisoned by his Troops..."" The license, valid for a year, was not likely renewed by Blaine. For an Indian trader, the terms were somewhat onerous -- essentially barring them from the entire trans-Appalachian West. The scant details we have concerning the life of Alexander Blaine indicate that we strayed well beyond the post at Fort Pitt. Like many others on the Appalachian frontier, he wanted to range much further into the interior. In 1774 he was spotted with partner Matthew Elliott (1739-1814) operating in the Ohio Valley, specifically on the Scotio River according to a deposition published in the appendix of Jefferson's Notes on the State of Virginia. John Penn (1729-1795) lieutenant governor of Pennsylvania (1763-1776) who negotiated the 1768 Treaty of Fort Stanwix which defined the boundaries of the Proclamation of 1763 between Pennsylvania, New York and the Six Nations. Moderate chipping at top with minor losses not affecting text. Partial fold separation at bottom of vertical creases, else fine."

A VIEW OF THE HARBOUR AND CITY OF THE HAVANA, TAKEN FROM JESU DEL MONTE

London: John Bowles [et al], [1768].. Engraved view (14 1/2 x 22 1/2 inches), matted (20 x 26 1/2 inches). Plate with mild age toning, but a generally very good, clean impression with slight instances of foxing at margins of sheet (not affecting image). A rare mid-18th-century view of Havana and the surrounding landscape and seascape, one of a set of six engraved views of Cuba from the famous SCENOGRAPHIA AMERICANA. All of these Cuban views were executed by Elias Durnford, an engineer with the British expedition which seized Havana from the Spanish in 1762. The British remained in control for over a year before returning the city to Spain in the Peace of 1763 in exchange for the Floridas. Durnford's views are some of the finest produced of any of the Caribbean islands in the 18th century. The present engraving provides a good view of Havana from the land side, with an expansive pastoral view of fields and palm trees extending to the harbor. Several ships are seen in the harbor itself, with additional lands and the sea beyond in the distance. The SCENOGRAPHIA AMERICANA was the brainchild of Thomas Pownall, who served as governor of several British provinces in North America and was himself a capable topographical artist. He commissioned, and in several cases personally drew, scenes in British North America from Quebec to the Caribbean. The views are generally found individually in the marketplace, and the set is best known for the famous Howdell views of New York and the Boston and Charleston panoramas. Originally issued in parts, followed by a single volume with twenty-eight plates, only a few complete sets of the SCENOGRAPHIA AMERICANA exist. The Cuba views, which are among the rarest, were originally issued in a fascicle of six. The present plate provides one of the finest 18th- century views of Havana. SABIN 77467. HOWES S140.         SENTIMENTAL JOURNEY THROUGH FRANCE AND ITALY

London for T. Becket and P. A. De Hondt 1768 - 2 volumes. Early printing, only the second. Small 8vo, contemporary polished calf gilt tooled with elaborate designs on the spines, two black morocco lettering pieces in gilt on each spine. xx, 203; (4), 208 pp. A nice set in pleasing original condition but for separation of two boards, now easily restored. RARE EARLY ISSUE OF THIS FAMOUS WORK BY LAURENCE STERNE. This printing was issued in the same year as the first issuance of the first printing. Sterne travelled through France and Italy as far south as Naples, and after returning determined to describe his travels from a sentimental point of view. The novel can be seen as an epilogue to the possibly unfinished work The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman, and also as an answer to Tobias Smollett's decidedly unsentimental Travels through France and Italy. Sterne had met Smollett during his travels in Europe, and strongly objected to his spleen, acerbity and quarrelsomeness. He modeled the character of Smelfungus on him. The novel was extremely popular and influential and helped establish travel writing as the dominant genre of the second half of the 18th century. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Soft cover. Very Good. 4to. [27.5 x 21.5 cm]. 40 numbered single-sided engraved plates. Bound in contemporary marbled paper. Very good overall. Only edition of this unusual volume surveying the wooded holdings of the Count of Eu, in Upper Normandy, a work comprised entirely of 40 fine, single-sided engravings, including a pictorial title page, 13 calligraphic plates of text, charts and tables, 5 botanical and industrial images, and 21 handsome, precise maps of the woods, copses and forests within the County of Pairie d'Eu. "This volume, evidently not intended for general sale, is a great rarity" (Thiébaud, 155). Produced in 1768 by Louis Estancelin, the region's "Lieutenant of Woods and Water", and engraved by Gobert-Denis Chambon, the Collection de Cartes is at once a lavish vanity project meant to flatter the aristocratic sensibilities of its dedicatee, the Comte d'Eu (at the time, Louis Charles de Bourbon), and a serious agrimensorial study, complete with meticulous references to the dimensions of individual parcels and to the ancient statutes appertaining to them. The volume is a painstaking analysis of the economic foundations of an estate, clothed in pre-Revolution finery. The Collection de Cartes concerns itself exclusively with "the woods of the County of Eu, which produce its principal revenue": although maps faithfully locate the city of Eu, its surroundings towns, villages, churches, and even individual farmhouses, these details appear as satellites to the forests. Nor are arable lands treated in detail, but instead individual tracts of woods are strikingly depicted in isolation, as if islands surrounded by an open sea. The more detailed maps indicate names of individual sub-parcels down to the size of a few acres and delineate the (rather formal) rectilinear alleys and carrefours that allowed one to traverse these woods. Estencelin adds to these designs extensive textual keys, tables calculating total holdings, and relevant statutes dating from the 1580s. Pictorial engravings supplement the volume's cartographic content, with one image depicting 37 different uses for wood (!). The renowned glassworks of Romesnil - situated within the forests of d'Eu and an industry requiring plentiful fuel - are given 3 plates, two of which depict glassblowers and their implements, the third delineating the façades of the five factory buildings: These technical depictions of industry share a spirit with the illustrations of Denis Diderot's Encyclopédie (1751-65) here localized to a specific place. A final engraving collects the Forest of Eu's 61 useful species of trees, shrubs, and bushes within an "Arbre Figuré", a single trunk sprouting 61 different leaves. Remarkably, the wooded regions of Eu, today known as the Forêt Domanial d'Eu, remain largely unchanged from the time they were depicted in this volume. * Manuel du Bibliographie Normand, pp. 435-36; Jules Thiébaud, Bibliographie des Ouvrages Français sur la Chasse, col. 155; OCLC (#54633671) lists American copies at Columbia, Harvard, Yale, and the Corning Museum of Glass.

Antoine¿s Traité d¿architecture is essentially a marketing ploy allowing him to present himself as an original architectural theorist, illustrating his arguments with the designs of his own projects, principally the façade of St. Antoine¿s obscurity today is partly due to the scarcity of remaining works of his: Philippsfreude was destroyed in 1793 in the context of the French Revolution, and all usable remains of the ruins were sold off under Napoleon. In some city records of Metz, the façade of St. Vincent is attributed to the architects Barlet and Louis, with no mention of Antoine¿s involvement. The work is not listed in OCLC, but we have located copies at the Getty and CCA. *BN record 04440090X; Getty record. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

A view in Hudson's River of the Entrance of what is called the Topan Sea. Sketch'd on the SPOT by his Excellency Governor Pownal, Painted by Paul Sandby, Engraved by Peter Benazech

London: printed for John Bowles, Robert Sayer, Thos. Jefferys, Carington Bowles and Henry Parker, 1768. Copper engraving by Peter Benazech, after Pownall. The contrast between this place as it was and as it is now is, to say the least, astonishing.Published following the conclusion of the French and Indian War, and in a period of great public interest in the American colonies, the Scenographia Americana was the first book dedicated to a large-scale artistic depiction of the American landscape. Here are harbors and rivers, cascades, forests and skies" (Hood)."The Scenographia Americana begins with views from Canada: Quebec City, the Montmorency Falls, Cape Rouge, the Gaspé, Rock Percé, the Miramichi Valley, Montreal, and Louisbourg ... Then follow four views of cities in long-settled British North America: New York (twice), Boston, and Charleston. Next are four views of dramatic river landscapes in New York and New Jersey: the Jersey Palisades, the Catskills as seen from the Hudson, the Great Cohoes Falls on the Mohawk River, and the Passaic River Falls ... The next two prints show the Moravian settlement at Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and an imaginary scene of an American farm ... The rest of the series shifts to the Caribbean, with four views of the harbor and city of Havana, two street scenes of Havana, one view of the British attack on Roseau, Dominique, and three scenes around Guadeloupe (one of a battle and two of the British occupation forces) ...." (Crowley)."The work is more than neatly done. All the prints are exceptionally well executed with respect to the original topographic projections as well as in the engraving of the plates. Five print publishers ... were involved in promoting the series" (Deak). "These views are second in quantity only to those that appeared in the Atlantic Neptune ... In quality they are second to none of the eighteenth century productions" (Fowble).

Erste deutsche Ausgabe. – Joseph de Guignes (1721 - 1800) succeeded Fourmont at the Royal Library as secretary interpreter of the Eastern languages. A "Memoire historique sur l`origine des Huns et des Turcs", published by de Guignes in 1748, obtained his admission to the Royal Society of London in 1752, and he became an associate of the French Academy of Inscriptions in 1754. Two years later he began to publish his learned and laborious "Histoire generale des Huns, des Mongoles, des Turcs et des autres Tartares occidentaux (1756-1758)"; and in 1757 he was appointed to the chair of Syriac at the College de France. He originated the proposal that the Huns who attacked the Roman Empire were the same people as the Xiongnu mentioned in Chinese records. This view was popularised by his contemporary, Edward Gibbon in Gibbon`s famous work "Decline And Fall Of The Roman Empire". This proposal has been strenuously debated by central Asianists including Maenchen-Helfen, Henning, Bailey, and de la Vaissière. The Histoire had been translated into German by Dähnert (1768 - 1771). De Guignes left a son, Christian Louis Joseph who, after learning Chinese from his father, went as consul to Canton, where he spent seventeen years. Jhdt.) in Dürnstein.

Mottled sheep c. 1768, a little rubbed, skillfully rebacked and recornered. Light foxing and browning, former owner's name on title crossed out. Booklabel (or bookseller's label?) of Gabriel Mullet on title. First Edition. Garrison-Morton 2154: "One of the most important works on military surgery during the 18th century." Ravaton wrote intelligently about the treatment of gunshot wounds, and was the first to adopt the double-flap method in amputation; he also introduced the method of suspending fractures in a hanging position by means of a tin boot hung from a wire and attached to a frame (this device is illustrated in plate IV). OCLC states that the author's Traite des plaies d'armes a feu (1750) represents an earlier version of the Chirurgie d'armee, a statement borne out by Ravaton's preface to the latter; however, the Chirurgie d'armee is over 200 pages longer and substantially revised, making it in essence a new work.

Venice: 1768. 8vo (63 x 113 mm). 30 pp. Woodcut title vignette, passe-partout initial, typographic headpiece and quarter-borders. Modern boards. Provenance: Luigi Vittorio Fossati Bellani, the noted bibliographer, with his bookplate. *** only edition. The nose itself and its Proustian talents, rather than a forgotten Cyrano, are the heroes of this poem in versi sciolti. This tribute to the sense of smell, reflecting a literary vogue for elevated verse parody in the Italian settecento, is dedicated "all'ordine chiarissimo di tutte quante le tabacchiere," but snuff and tobacco are mentioned only briefly. To the same author are attributed other satires, notably I Nei ("moles" or birthmarks, 1768, an imitation of Giuseppe Parini), and Il cavalier del dente (1767, from the same press of Antonio Graziosi). Not in Melzi or Passano. OCLC lists 3 copies (NYPL, Harvard, Trento, Bib. communale).

8vo. viii, 681 [i.e., 685] [1]pp. 7 engraved plates. Paris: P. Fr. Didot le jeune, 1768. 197 x 123 mm. Hirsch treats the two titles as separate entities, and our other surgical references discuss only the Chirurgie d'armÈe. Wangensteen & Wangensteen, pp. 30, 32, 35. Rutkow, Surgery: An Illustrated History, p. 250. Not in Peltier or Le Vay.
