A very good copy."The first edition was sold out within six weeks, and a new edition (also of 3500 copies) was advertised for 1 April 1768 This second edition supplied the public demand for a year. The third edition was advertised for 1 May 1769, with the announcement that ‘Mr. Boswell’s Account of Corsica has been so well received by the Public that two numerous Editions of 3500 Copies have been sold within the Space of a few Months; and the Book is so highly esteemed abroad that it has been translated into the French and Dutch languages, and printed at Amsterdam and Lausanne’ As Boswell proudly recorded later it was ‘translated into Dutch, German Italian, and twice into French’—all within a year of its publication. Besides this, there were, as listed above, at least three editions printed in Ireland. The Account of Corsica was a book of the hour. Many more copies of it were sold in Boswell’s lifetime than of either of his great works in the biography of Johnson, and it achieved abroad a much more remarkable success" (Pottle, p. 62).Points: Table of contents (b2) follows the Preface (a1-b1); D2 recto is in Rothschild’s first state, with the words "John Home" incorrectly placed following the first quotation on p. 51; E2 is a cancellans, with lines 11 and 12 on p. 69 reading: "enjoying the noble fief of/Istria" (not recorded by Rothschild); Z3 is a cancellans, with "Mariana" corrected to "Mariani" on p. 357. The map is in the second state, as per Rothschild, with the imprint, and is bound between the half-title and title. In addition, this copy has the following misprints recorded by Pottle: "141" for "241" in the table of contents (corrected in this copy by over-stamping); broken "E" in "Etruscans" on p. 70, line 17 (with the lower bar showing faintly); "feelirg" on p. 137, line 11; "tha the" on p. 172, line 9; "Montgomerÿ" on p. 184, line 4; "speculati-ions" on p. 327, lines 9-10.         Cook, J. - (Magra, J.?). Nachricht von den neuesten Entdeckungen

Magra (Matra) James - Cook, J. - (Magra, J.?). "This volume which is the earliest printed account of Cook's voyage is an extremely important work, published two months after the return of the navigator and nearly two years before Hawkesworth's eagerly awaited account (Cox zur engl. EA 1771). Breitenbauch stand u.a. mit Georg Forster in brieflichem Kontakt.

1768 - (Uppsala), J. Edman, 1768. 8:o. Engraved title,(16),440 pp. & 1 folded engraved plate. With an engraved title vignette on p. (1). Nice contemporary half calf, somewhat worn, with raised bands, richly gilt spine and tan glazed paper label. Red edges. Minimal wormhole at bottom of front joint, minor ink spotting on front cover and on front edge. Occasional stains in lower margin. Erased signature on front pastedown and numbering on front flyleaf and under these a newer MS gift verse. The same signature written upside down on the last plate. Bookplate. Published by C. A. Askergren. The nice vignette, engraved by J, Gillberg, is placed above the printed dedication to King Gustav III. First edition of Wallerius' lectures on metallurgy at Uppsala University. A German translation was published in 1770. Wallerius' description of the foundation of metallurgy differs from earlier books on the subject, for example Schlüter's extensive "Unterricht von Hüttewercken" and Swedenborg's works on iron and copper. While these were empirical-technical works, written for practicing mining engineers, Wallerius' book was an attempt to understand the chemical processes that took place in the grates and furnaces, which even today is one of the most difficult areas within the field of practical chemistry.         Every man his own brewer; or a compendium of the English brewery. Containing the best instructions for the choice of hops, malt, and water; and for the right management of the brewing utensils. Likewise, the most approved methods of brewing London porter and ale. Of brewing amber, Burton, western and oat ales. Of good table beer, and Marlborough, Dorchester, Nottingham, and Bristol beers. And of manufacturing pure malt wines. Of fermentations; casual distemperature in brewing, with the cause and remedy. The theory of British fruits, as applied to the improvement of malt liquors. Of air; its properties and effects on malt liquor. Of the thermometer, its use and application in brewery. Of fire, and its action on malt and vinous extracts. Together with a variety of maxims and observations deduced from theory and practice. And some useful hints to the distillery, and extracting a fine spirit from malt and other ingredients. The whole illustrated by several experiments. By a Gentleman, lately retired from the brew

London: printed for the author: and sold by J. Almon ..... and Mess. Robinson and Roberts. MDCCLXVIII [1768]. 12mo., (2) + vi + ix - xxviii + 29 - 256 + (4)pp., including the half-title and with the two final leaves of advertisements, contemporary plain sheep, spine gilt with raised bands and red label, joints and corners worn, upper cover coming loose else a good crisp copy. First edition: very scarce. Cagle 599. Maclean p.26. Both Cagle and Maclean assume wrongly that the author was Samuel Child but such an attribution is understandably not entertained by ESTC. The Compendium> by the 'gentleman lately retired from the brewing business' is a serious and substantial treatise on the subject. The tract undoubtedly by Child is but a slight essay of a mere 20pp. or so and was not published until the 1790s. The title phrase 'Every man his own .....>' was, after all, widely used by other authors for the do-it-yourself genre of books.

Dublin: W. G. Jones, for Thomas Ewing, 1768. Third Dublin Edition. A rather scarce and interesting octavo edition. From the Preface: "N.B. The Editors of this Dublin Edition have endeavored to render it more worthy of the public attention, by adding at full length, the Author's curious preface to the Folio Edition, his History of the English language, and by inserting in their proper places, above 500 Words from the Folio Edition, none of which are contained in the London Octavo: As to the Paper, Print and Correction, they will be found, on comparison, much superior, although the Book is given for near one half of the price of the London Edition." In full contemporary calf with morocco label; handmade leather cover with vellum flaps (presumably 19th century) is included and has done its job in preserving the binding quite well. A rather scarce and interesting octavo edition. (ESTC T147637).

- The first edition was published in 1763 at the same address under the title: The arretin, or debauchery of the mind makes sense. Full morocco lemon time. Smooth back decorated. Part of title in green morocco. Triple fillet border on covers. Gilt edges. Nice copy. Upper joint slightly rubbed. The arretin consists of 25 essays and stories as diverse as The Negro subjects, agriculture, chastity or celibacy, History Master Pierre, ect. These are all strong criticism, sometimes direct, sometimes satirical or allegorical, the teaching of the Bible, the church and its history. Father Du Laurens (1719-1793) is an anti-religious polemicist and writer whose works are all licentious libertines, but most profoundly anti-religious. The author does not hesitate to descend into the lower trivialities to support his criticism, but his comic inventions, often amazing, have earned him praise. Prosecuted for his books, he fled to Holland paper, and was imprisoned in Mainz in 1767, ending his days in 74 years in a convent. 'This book is a lively and sprightly enough criticism of the main stories of the Bible ... The wife of Suze is a critique of The New Heloise. The wise Pangloss is Solomon, the wisest of men, it is a original chapter, even by his singular biblical quotations. The story is that of Suzanne Suzon and two old history Dildo ... The origin of these instruments chamois or velvet become so common in religious houses. Finally, the convents of the Jesuits are an allegory of the story of Sodom. In a word, the entire volume is rather facetious criticism of the Bible and clerical institutions simply a book guy. Gay / Lemonnyer I, 263-264. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. Contact us for any information! Gay/Lemonnyer I, 263-264.

Della natura, e coltura de' fiori fisicamente esposta.

Palermo, Angelo Felicella, 1768 - 3 vols, 4to (224 x 171 mm), pp viii 440; viii 416; 167 [9], with engraved vignette on first title and 65 double-page engraved plates; some light browning or spotting to text, the plates bright and clean, a fine copy in contemporary Italian vellum, labelled in gilt on an orange ground on spines. £17,500First edition, second issue (see below) with the original copper plate for plate 9, and one of the last works in the 'florilegium' tradition. Its 65 highly decorative plates, by the author and his colleague Mario Cammerari, in oblong format, are reminiscent of florilegia more than a century earlier. The first volume is devoted to botany, particularly to the anatomy of the flower and its constituent parts. 'In fact, it contains a remarkably advanced dissertation on the sexual generation of plants, including the function of pollen and the importance of its transmission by insects, a discovery that has traditionally been attributed to the German botanist Joseph Gottlieb Koelreuter (1733-1806), director of the botanical garden in Karlsruhe.'The second volume deals with horticulture, in particular the cultivation of flowers. In the first sixty pages Arena describes in considerable detail how to set up a flower-garden.'Part Two contains a discussion of flowers and their cultivation. The first chapter in this section tells how to force semi-double and double blooms from the seed, and offers a genetic explanation of this phenomenon. He then describes the proper use of the seedbed, and explains when and how young plants should be transplanted. A catalogue of various "noble" species of flowers closes the second volume.' (Tongiorgi-Tomasi, An Oak Spring Flora pp 147-8). In fact this catalogue describes in detail each of the flowers illustrated in the plates. The first plate serves as a frontispiece, and depicts 'Flora, crowned with a garden of flowers, offering floral tributes to three figures - Botany (shown holding an alembic), Physics (who is looking through a magnifying glass) and Pomona (who holds a spade and basket of fruit'. The second plate illustrates gardener's tools, seed forms, and parts of flowers, while the third plate contains parterre designs. The remaining plates are of flowers, several to each plate. 'Arena noted that the illustrations . would be of use not only to the botanist, but to painters, sculptors, embroiderers and weavers as well' (ibid). Many of the individual flower images derive from Weinmann's Phytanthoza iconographia (1737-45), others are from Ferrari's Flora (1633). The arrangements of the flowers on each plate are however entirely Arena's compositions. The original copper plate for plate 9 which accompanies this set depicts asphodels, asters, and auriculas. Most copies of volume one are dated 1767, and the title is worded slightly differently. Some copies of the plate volume contain an additional letterpress title, but it is often not present (as in the Oak Spring copy).Nissen BBI 48; Bunyard, 'Some Early Italian Gardening Books', JRHS, 1923, pp 183-4; An Oak Spring Flora 38

        Architectura navalis mercatoria

Stockholm, 1768. Large folio, double-page letterpress table, engraved double-page title and dedication, and 62 double-page folding plates, all plates with generous margins and with good, clear impressions, some toning and scattered foxing, old repairs to plates XXVIII & XXIX; a strikingly handsome copy in contemporary French mottled calf, the French royal arms stamped in gilt on each cover, alternating anchor and fleur-de-lys devices in gilt on the spine between raised bands. A magnificent folio volume: the most important work of naval architecture of the eighteenth century, with detailed and attractive plans for many different kinds of naval vessels. Published in the very year of the sailing of Cook's Endeavour, and just two decades before the First Fleet, it provides an extraordinary summary of contemporary ship-building techniques. The Swede Fredric Henric af Chapman (1721-1808) was perhaps the greatest naval architect of the eighteenth century. He was promoted vice admiral in 1791, and was manager of the shipyard at Karlskrona, the important base of the Royal Swedish Navy, from 1782 to 1793. Under the direction of King Gustav III it was Chapman who drove the modernisation of the Swedish fleet, and his methods surpassed and perfected contemporary shipbuilding, and were rapidly adopted by all of the main naval nations. Not all of Chapman's plans were built, chiefly because of the imposing scale on which he worked: there are, for example, plans for a privateering frigate, designed as a deep-water commerce raider, 160 feet long, and displacing 750 tons. She was to be armed with forty guns and no fewer than four hundred men: around five times the size of the average privateer of his day, and twice the size of actual French privateers built during the French Revolutionary War (Konstam & McBride, Privateers & Pirates, 1730-1830, pp. 31-2).This has always been a scarce and desirable work: even in 1781, when Vial du Clairbois issued an annotated quarto edition of Chapman's work, he commented 'Il ne se trouve pas en France & coûte 180 livres en Hollande, en feuilles. As a result, despite being one of the foundations of modern naval architecture, this work is better known from later editions and facsimiles than, as here, in its full glory. Indeed, the scale of the work is significant, as it is now known chiefly from much smaller quarto-sized plates, not the grand folio double-page plates seen here.Handsomely bound in a contemporary French binding with the royal arms stamped in gilt to both boards, this copy is complete with the letterpress "Table générale des plans", a tri-lingual index (printed in French, English, and Swedish) that is missing in many copies. One of the reasons for the work's scarcity is plausibly said to be its actual practical use in shipyards of the period. We have seen another copy of the work almost devastated by hands-on use. The survival of this copy in such excellent condition suggests that it has always been in a library rather than a shipyard, and given its royal binding probably rather a good library.         A Sentimental Journey Through France and Italy by Mr. Yorick

London: T.Becket and P.A. De Hondt, 1768. First Edition, ordinary paper issue with 6" x 3.75" leaves. Full calf. Near fine. Two small octavo volumes. xx,203;[4],208pp. Rothchild's variant state 2 (vous) of line 12, p.150 of Vol I and state 2 (whho) of last line of p.133 of Vol II. With the half-title in each volume and the list of subscribers, but no advertisement of impending completion. In a custom mahogany leather/cloth box. Bound by Francis Bedford (1799-1883). "The work of Bedford is not excelled by that of any English bookbinder of his time. The number of volumes bound by him is very large, and for many years a continuous stream of beautiful bindings issued from his workshops, the great majority of which are now to be found on the shelves of the finest libraries of England and America. Bedford himself considered that an edition of Dante, which he bound in brown morocco and tooled with a Grolier pattern, was his chef d'oeuvre, and wished it placed in his coffin; but his request was not complied with, and it was sold at the sale of his books for 49l."

Fine. Saillant et Desaint, à Paris 1768, 2 tomes en 2 Vol. in-4 (25x33,5cm), (1f.) (2f. de faux-titre et titre) (1f. tit. fr.) (XXIXp.) (1p.) et (1f. priv.) 337 pp. et (1f.) (2f. de faux-titre et titre) 280pp., deux volumes reliés. - First edition illustrated by a frontispiece engraved by Seve Launay and 180 boards (with many figures) size and beautifully executed after drawings by Claude Aubriet, Madeleine-Françoise Basseporte and engraved by Catherine Haussard Charles Milsan, Herisset ... Full mottled calf blond at the time. Back with five nerves adorned with coffered and gilded finials, as well as parts of title and volume number of red and yellow morocco. Triple gilt coaching boards. Large golden lace in coaching contreplats. Double gilt on cuts. All slices browned. Discreet and clever level restores bits and headpieces head and tail. Some pages very lightly and evenly browned, otherwise very good copy with all margins of freshness. This remarkable book, and very famous, can be seen from two perspectives; the illustration, with great finesse of execution and that of the fundamental theoretical work Duhamel Du Monceau, which served as a reference manual, the author marking the difference between varieties of gardeners and naturalists classifications . In his Treatise of forests, Duhamel avaiet already used the methods applied to fruit trees (transplanting reboutage ...) to multiply the species and save the forests; methods he experimented at length in his family estate with his brother. The prints are exclusively fruit table, and many models of transplantation and size. Nearly 250 species of fruits are well described (pears, plums, apples, cherries, grapes ...). The work was done in collaboration with The Father Berriays who brought a little more than a third of drawings and a large part of the text. It will be recalled, for all practical purposes we consider Henri-Louis Duhamel de Monceau as the founder of modern agronomy, as he was the first to describe and theorize the development mode of trees. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate.

The juxtaposition of contemporary stories can address some understanding of the work of a people closely related to its sovereign. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. Contact us for any information! - [FRENCH VERSION FOLLOWS] Edition originale.

Utgiven på C. A. Askergrens förlag. Utkom i tysk översättning 1770.

      W. Nicoll, at the Paper-Mill, No. 51, in St. Paul's Church-Yard. London, 1768 - First Edition. 8vo, [2] + 284 pp; without the half-title and final blank leaf which are sometimes present, but the text is complete, with seven woodcut illustrations. Bound in quarter calf, spine with raised bands, and title label, over marbled boards. This work was the beginning of a most exhaustive inquiry into the state of British agriculture. It began almost by accident, with a simple recording of the crop rotations, the implements used, the cost of labour and provisions, the size of farms, and the horses or oxen employed on holdings of different sizes. Passing reference is also made to local industries, such as the manufacture of Witney blankets, and useful facts and figures about them are mentioned.
