A Sentimental Journey Through France and Italy by Mr. Yorick

London: T. Becket and P.A. De Hondt, 1768. Two small octavo volumes. (ii), xx, 203; (iv), 208 pp. First edition, first issue. Bound with the rare advertisement leaf promising completion of the work the following year and including a list of subscribers. Also, a frontispiece portrait of Jens Baggesen, an eighteenth century Danish writer who was greatly influenced by Sterne, has been inserted at the beginning of volume I. The portrait was probably inserted by the Danish collector whose library this book came from. The provenance further includes Lord Gray, whose bookplate appears on the inside front cover of volume I. A Sentimental Journey is Sterne's best-known work apart from Tristram Shandy. Bound in contemporary marbled boards with calf spines, gilt in six compartments with red morocco titles. A very nice copy, with virtually no foxing. Housed in a morocco-backed, marbled slipcase labeled Baggeseniana in gilt on the spine, with the title "Yorick's Labyrint," a combination of Sterne's original title and the title of Baggesen's similar work, "The Labyrinth." A delightfully calculated obfuscation -- Sterne and Baggesen would approve.

A Sentimental Journey through France and Germany by Mr. Yorick

London: Printed by T. Becket and P..A.. de Hondt in the Strand, 1768. First edition. Original full brown calf, raised bands, gilt rules and gilt ruled borders to sides.. Volume II lacks the advertisement leaf (rarely found) and the rear free endpaper is present but defective. Small brown mark on pp. 206/207 (blood? boot polish?).Faint water stain at foot of half title in Vol.II. Otherwise a few minor spots; generally internally clean, bindings tender and rather worn, but a good copy of an important first edition. Octavo (90 x 150mm), pp. xx + 203; [iv] +208. Speckled edges. Bookplate of 'William Sturge' on front pastedowns of both volumes. This copy has the correct spellings of vol. I, p. 150, l. 12 "vous"; and vol. II, p. 133, last line "who have". Walpole commented in a letter to G.Montagu as soon as the book was published, that Sterne's "two little volumes . . ..are very pleasing, though too much dilated, and infinitely preferable to his tiresome Tristram Shandy" which he thought much too long. "In these there is great good-nature, and strokes of delicacy."  Sterne himself thought it would "please the multitude, especially the women who will read this book in the parlour, and Tristram in the bed-chamber".

Mr William Shakespeare his Comedies, Histories, and Tragedies,

London: Printed by Dryden Leach, for J. and R. Tonson,, [1768]. set out by himself in quarto, or by the Players his Fellows in folio, and now faithfully republish'd from their Editions in ten Volumes octavo; with an Introduction: Whereunto will be added, in some other Volumes, Notes, critical and explanatory, and a Body of Various Readings entire. 10 volumes, octavo (181 × 118 mm). Contemporary red straight-grain morocco, smooth spines gilt-lettered direct, gilt dotted rolls to spine and covers, gilt decorative rules to turn-ins, marbled endpapers, gilt edges, pale blue silk bookmarks. Vignette portrait of Shakespeare at end of introduction. Bookplates. Spines a little faded and rubbed, minimal spotting to a couple of gatherings, overall an excellent set in contemporary red morocco. First edition of Capell's Shakespeare. "It was the first edition to be prepared from a complete transcript rather than a marked-up copy of the previous edition, and it marked a change of editorial policy in which the textus receptus was rejected in favour of an unusually meticulous collation of the early quartos [of which Capell had 55 in his own collection] and first folio. Pegge records that Lord Dacre wrote to Capell as the 'Restorer of Shakespeare', and that Capell wept on reading the letter. Capell was the first to drop Rowe's anecdotal account of Shakespeare's life; he set the agenda for the documentary research of Edmond Malone into Shakespearian chronology and biography" (ODNB). The edition is also distinguished by its attractive typography and wide margins. The "Notes" and "Various Readings" promised in the first title page (the titles of the later volumes are much briefer) were not published until after Capell's death, rather haphazardly collected in three quarto volumes, 1783.

Viaggio Intorno al Mondo Fatto Dalla Nave Inglese il Delfino Comandata dal Capo Squadra ByronÖ

Firenze,: Giuseppe Allegrini, 1768.. Square octavo, engraved frontispiece, 4, 152 pp., a few ink marks on the title-page but remarkably fresh throughout, untrimmed, in serviceable modern boards. Most uncommon contemporary Italian edition of the famous account of Byron's circumnavigation by Charles Clerke. As would be expected, the edition includes an excellent new version of the famous frontispiece of an English sailor offering a towering Patagonian couple a biscuit.First published in London in 1767, and quickly followed by a French translation, this Italian edition is very scarce. It would appear to be based on the first London edition (because it does not include a short appendix that was included in the second London edition, also of 1767). We have never seen another copy offered for sale. This famous unauthorised account of "Foul-Weather Jack" Byron's command of the Dolphin on the 1764-66 circumnavigation of the globe was published anonymously but is usually attributed to midshipman Charles Clerke who later sailed on all three of Cook's voyages. Byron's voyage to the Pacific was the first major English voyage in the region since Anson, and would become the first part of Hawkesworth's famous compendium of South Sea voyages. This account became the basis for a dozen or more European editions and translations over the next twenty years. Clerke later served with Captain Cook on all three of his voyages, succeeding him as commander of the third voyage but shortly after dying of tuberculosis at Petropavlovsk in August 1779.Byron's expedition was an important precursor of the voyages of Wallis, Carteret and Cook, but its immediate contemporary impact was the sensation created by rumours of Patagonian giants encountered by the expedition. These tall stories gained currency from a report sent in jest by Clerke to the Royal Society (and printed in the Philosophical Transactions for 1767), and from a similar account published in this book. Extraordinarily, the stories seem to have been encouraged by the British government to divert attention from Byron's taking possession of the Falklands (Malvinas), politically the most sensitive and controversial aspect of his voyage. The amusing affair of the Patagonian giants embroiled many great figures of the Enlightenment including Voltaire (see discussion by Helen Wallis in Byron's Journal, ed. Gallagher, appendix III, and by P.G. Adams, Travelers and Travel Liars, ch. II).O'Reilly-Reitman, 243.

Dublin: Printed for J. Milliken, 1768.. [2],253,[1]pp. Small octavo. Modern three quarter calf and marbled boards, raised bands, gilt labels. Illustrations of farming implements. Text block intermittently tanned, with occasional marginal smudges, modest soiling and discolorations, several old stamps of a defunct mercantile library. An ordinary copy, now preserved in a satisfying binding. First Dublin edition of one of Young&#39;s earliest major works, published in the same year as the London edition. This is an edition of some rarity - ESTC locates only five copies: two at Trinity College, and three in the U.S., at Columbia, the Library Company and the Univ. of Kansas. Based on his extensive tours of the British Isles and Ireland, Young amassed a significant body of first hand information and statistics that did much to help raise the standards of agriculture. In 1793, he was appointed the first Secretary of the Board of Agriculture, the predecessor of the Royal Agricultural Society. The immediate relevance of Young&#39;s observations to Irish readers is self- evident, and in 1780 Young published similar observations based on his travels there. The London editions are appropriately recorded in Kress, Higgs, Amery/Fussell and Goldsmiths, but this edition is not. PRINTING & THE MIND OF MAN 214. ESTC N23358.

Paris, 1768. FIRST EDITION. Hardcover. Classical Botanical Work in Original Decorative Calf,With More than 180 Finely Engraved Plates. 343 x 267 mm (13 1/2 x 10 1/2"). Two volumes. FIRST EDITION. VERY PLEASING CONTEMPORARY SMOOTH CALF, ATTRACTIVELY GILT, covers with French fillet border, raised bands, spine gilt in pretty floral compartments with tulip cornerpieces and a large floral spray at center surrounded by small tools, one burgundy and one brown morocco label, turn-ins with gilt foliate role, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. WITH 181 VERY FINE ENGRAVED BOTANICAL PLATES (including an engraved frontispiece depicting a man and woman picking pears) as called for, the plates illustrating the seeds, blooms, and edible products of fruit-bearing trees. Title pages with small early circular monogram stamp. Nissen 550; Dunthorne 100; Pritzel 2466; Raphael, "Pomona" 28; Brunet II, 871. Front cover of volume II with a (well-masked) six-inch abrasion, joints of first volume beginning to crack along first compartment at top and bottom on front and at bottom on back, a few tiny wormholes and small patches of lost patina from insect activity, but the handsome original bindings entirely solid, quite lustrous, and generally well preserved. A dozen gatherings with faint overall browning because of paper stock (though the plates almost entirely unaffected), isolated rust spots and other trivial imperfections, otherwise a fine copy internally, the text especially fresh and clean, the plates richly impressed, and the margins remarkably ample. With a fine contemporary binding that measures 343 x 267 mm., this is an extremely large as well as quite pleasing copy of a beautifully illustrated book by the man Raphael calls "one of the outstanding botanists of the 18th century" in the fields of plant physiology and agriculture. Henri Duhamel du Monceau (1700-82) was a justifiably celebrated Parisian polymath who gave up on formal university training to take lodgings near the Botanical Gardens, where he pursued his own plan of learning from the director and from other distinguished persons who gathered there. He cultivated trees on his own estates, authored a number of important books on topics as diverse as agronomy, marine architecture, and ichthyology, and was a member of all the important scientific academies. This treatise on fruit culture proved to be of considerable importance, and the plates (designed by Magdeleine-Francoise Basseporte, Aubriet, and others and engraved by Catherine Haussard, P. L. Cor, Henriquez Herisset fils, Menil, Charles Milsan, Poletnich, and others) were among the most beautiful botanical engravings of the period. The text begins by describing the appropriate methods for pruning and grafting fruit trees, and goes on to discuss the different varieties of individual fruits, including 58(!) types of pears. The engravings show uncommon consistency from beginning to end in how substantial and skillfully executed they are. The images are faithful to nature, thoughtfully designed, and so finely wrought as to appear luscious. The work is uncommonly seen in an attractive contemporary binding, and is rarer still in the kind of tall copy offered here.

A cornerstone Spanish Americana; the most celebrated 17th century Spanish voyage to Magellan. 1768. Cadiz. Don Manuel Espinosa. In 4to (195 mm x 138 mm). 9 ff. + 1 [blank] + 162 + 1 ff. + 1 [blank] + 41 + 1 ff. + folding map. Contemporary flexible vellum, ties present, spine lettered in ink, slightly bowed and soiled. A fine, clean and crisp copy, title and last page with small excised piece of paper far from text and restored. Second edition. The first edition was published in 1621 and is virtually unobtainable with the Texeira map. The voyage made by the Nodal´s was arguably amongst the most significant carried out by the Spanish crown in the 17th century; it´s also certainly an outstanding work of navigation, and one of the most important travel narratives of the 17th century. ?This expedition was organized by the Spanish Government to explore the extreme south of America where Le Maire and Schouten had just discovered a new passage to the Pacific. Two ships were built in Lisbon especially for this purpose. The crew consisted entirely of Portuguese taken out of prison... Among the navigators were some Dutchmen who had already been on the voyage with Le Maire. The expedition eached Rio in November, 1618... They circumnavigated Tierra del Fuego and renamed the strait of Le Maire ´Sao Vicente´... They returned to Spain after calling at Pernambuco in July, 1619?. The expedition passed through Tierra del Fuego and the Strait of Magellan in 1619. Remarkably, virtually no men enlisted for this journey, considered to be highly dangerous, so the crew consisted mostly of prisoners ?in fact, when making Port at Rio, the Nodal´s wanted the men to go directly to the local prison, in fear of an attempt to escape; apparently no one died.         Plate 71

Vienna became a center for botanical art illustration during the early 19th century. Francis I (1768-1835) of Austria, the last monarch to rule over the Holy Roman Empire, was obsessed with flowers and promoted the study of botanicals as well as the creation of gardens in Vienna. His Imperial Gardens, where he realized his passion for flowers, remain one of Vienna's most beloved treasures.Leopold Trattinnick, a wealthy Austrian botanist, was the first curator of the Botanical Court Cabinet, founded by Francis I. A member of a prosperous family, Trattinnick had the means to publish several sumptuously produced botanical works without regards to cost. Trattinnick's publications include Auswahl Vorzuglich Schoner (1821) and Neue Arten von Pelargonien Deutchen Ursprunges (1825-43). Thesaurus Botanicus is considered his most beautiful work. Thesaurus Botanicus consists of 80 illustrated plates by the Austrian artists Strenzel, Frister, Kneisech, J. Schmid, Reinelli, Malknect and Buchberger. The majority of the plates were illustrated by Ignaz Strenzel, a professor at the Vienna Academy, and by Franz Reinelli, a flower specialist at the Royal Vienna porcelain manufacture. This hand-colored engraving, "Plate 71" measures 16.25" x 10.5" and is in very good condition with small foxing marks. Expertly detailed and vibrantly colored, this engraving illustrates the different parts of this plants flowers and gives a fuller version of the plant on the stems. This engraving is colored with vibrant green stems and pink flowers with yellow centers. The cross sections of the different layers of the flowers brings a scientific edge to this beautiful engraving.

London: Printed, and Sold by J. Almon, 1768.. 82pp. plus frontispiece bound in after titlepage. Quarto. Modern three- quarter calf and marbled boards, spine gilt. Modern bookplate on front pastedown. Very minor foxing and soiling. Very good. The only edition of this scarce defense of American liberties and freedoms, issued in the wake of the Townshend Acts. William Bollan was born in England but educated in America, where he built a successful law career in Boston. He served as the Massachusetts colonial agent in London from 1745 to 1762, when he was removed as a result of clashing political factions in the colony. Accused by some in the Bay Colony of being too subservient to the imperial center at the expense of the colonial periphery, Bollan spent much of his time after 1762 producing pamphlets on the brewing political crisis between the Crown and the colonies, always striving for reconciliation between the two. Bollan sees the Townshend Acts, which imposed revenue duties on the colonies for reasons other than direct defense, as evidence of political corruption in the British government, but not as reason enough to sever the ties between England and her colonies. He harkens back to the history of the Roman Empire, drawing comparisons to the current situation. The lovely plate, engraved by Bartolozzi, represents a British "Lady Liberty," with an olive branch in hand but with a shield close at hand. Not in Cohen, though he lists several other works by Bollan. A very scarce work on the market. AMERICAN CONTROVERSY 68-2. HOWES B576, "aa." SABIN 6210. ESTC N1000.

The six copies of the 1768 edition listed in Copac (libraries in the UK), do not have this pamphlet. It is catalogued in the Sotheby&#39;s Library of the Earls of Macclesfield, Part 10, No. 3848. Colonel William Windham (1717-1761) came from an old Norfolk family. He travelled widely in Europe and for some time was an officer in one of Queen Maria Theresa&#39;s hussar regiments. Back in England he vigorously supported Pitt&#39;s scheme for a national militia in 1756, and then helped the Marquis Townshend to form the Norfolk militia regiment in 1757. His Plan of Discipline first published in 1760 came into general use in his own country and later became one of the principal drill manuals in use during the American Revolution.         Architectura navalis mercatoria

Stockholm,, 1768.. Large folio, double-page letterpress table, engraved double-page title and dedication, and 62 double-page folding plates, all plates with generous margins and with good, clear impressions, some toning and scattered foxing, old repairs to plates XXVIII & XXIX; a strikingly handsome copy in contemporary French mottled calf, the French royal arms stamped in gilt on each cover, alternating anchor and fleur-de-lys devices in gilt on the spine between raised bands. A magnificent folio volume: the most important work of naval architecture of the eighteenth century, with detailed and attractive plans for many different kinds of naval vessels. Published in the very year of the sailing of Cook's Endeavour, and just two decades before the First Fleet, it provides an extraordinary summary of contemporary ship-building techniques. The Swede Fredric Henric af Chapman (1721-1808) was perhaps the greatest naval architect of the eighteenth century. He was promoted vice admiral in 1791, and was manager of the shipyard at Karlskrona, the important base of the Royal Swedish Navy, from 1782 to 1793. Under the direction of King Gustav III it was Chapman who drove the modernisation of the Swedish fleet, and his methods surpassed and perfected contemporary shipbuilding, and were rapidly adopted by all of the main naval nations. Not all of Chapman's plans were built, chiefly because of the imposing scale on which he worked: there are, for example, plans for a privateering frigate, designed as a deep-water commerce raider, 160 feet long, and displacing 750 tons. She was to be armed with forty guns and no fewer than four hundred men: around five times the size of the average privateer of his day, and twice the size of actual French privateers built during the French Revolutionary War (Konstam & McBride, Privateers & Pirates, 1730-1830, pp. 31-2).This has always been a scarce and desirable work: even in 1781, when Vial du Clairbois issued an annotated quarto edition of Chapman's work, he commented 'Il ne se trouve pas en France & co?te 180 livres en Hollande, en feuilles. As a result, despite being one of the foundations of modern naval architecture, this work is better known from later editions and facsimiles than, as here, in its full glory. Indeed, the scale of the work is significant, as it is now known chiefly from much smaller quarto-sized plates, not the grand folio double-page plates seen here.Handsomely bound in a contemporary French binding with the royal arms stamped in gilt to both boards, this copy is complete with the letterpress "Table gÈnÈrale des plans", a tri-lingual index (printed in French, English, and Swedish) that is missing in many copies. One of the reasons for the work's scarcity is plausibly said to be its actual practical use in shipyards of the period. We have seen another copy of the work almost devastated by hands-on use. The survival of this copy in such excellent condition suggests that it has always been in a library rather than a shipyard, and given its royal binding probably rather a good library.Brunet, I, 1797; Polak, 1605.

- To fight against the powerful English fleet, king Louis XIV decided to endow his ships with nautical charts that could enable them to compete with the enemy. The Neptune Francais, in 1693, can be considered a first attempt, but it was only at the beginning of the Eighteenth century that a campaign of study of the Mediterranean coasts and sea was started, leading to the realization of maps, collected in the Dépot des Cartes et Planes de la Marine in 1720. Nevertheless, the real founder of French hydrography can be considered Jacques Nicolas Bellin (1703-1772), who served for more than fifty years the navy as engineer and cartographer, which win him first the title of "Hydrographer Engineer of the Navy" and then of "Royal Hydrographer". His first commitment was to study the French coasts fisrt, and then of the whole world. His production was massive and his nautical charts, due also to their quality, were published in many edition until the end of the XVIII century. This allowance led to the production and the selling of sea charts, at first based on those from Bellin, then developed by other navy engineers. The sea charts were sold separately, all bearing the stamp with the anchor and the crowns of the Depot Generale de la Marine. Collections of the same charts have been published under the name of Neptune Francois, a monumental work which has been reissued many times until the half of the following century. The following group of charts is taken from a volume entitled Neptune de la Méditerranée, about the Mediterranean sea. Where possible, there is the name of the cartographer, very often the captain of the ship, and the date of the chart. Map of Ligury, with part of Provence and Tuscany. Contemporay outline colour.       Torino, Stamp. Reale, 1768-1820.6 voll. In-4. Compl. Third greatly enlarged edition of Baldinucci?s scholarly survey of Italian artist (first edition: 1681-1728). All our bibliographies quote this edition as being complete in five volumes, except Gamba who correctly mentions six. Due to the long time employed for publication, complete copies are quite scarce: vol. II was printed in 1770, but the other four were only published between 1813 and 1820. With 6 engr. portraits and 3 folding genealogies. A good uncut and partly unopened copy bound in original boards (cartonatura rustica; vols. I & II covered with 18th c. decorative floral paper, slightly worn).

Vollständige Anleitung zur Algebra.St. Petersburg: Kaiserliche Academie der Wissenschaften, 1770.

First edition of Euler's great textbook of algebra in its language of composition, preceded only by an extremely rare Russian translation published in 1768-9 by two of his students. "Euler's Vollständige Anleitung zur Algebra is not only the most popular textbook on elementary algebra, with the exception of Euclid's Elements it is the most widely printed book on mathematics." (Truesdell). It "was translated into Russian (1768-9), Dutch (1773), French (1774), Latin (1790), English (1797, 1822) and Greek (1800). The popular German edition from Reclam Verlag sold no less than 108,000 copies between 1883 and 1943 (Reich, 1992). After 240 years this algebra textbook is still in print today, available in several languages and editions" (Heeffer). <br/><br/> "In 1770 Euler published his 'Vollständige Anleitung zur Algebra'... The first volume treats of determinate algebra. This contains one of the earliest attempts to place the fundamental processes on a scientific basis: the same subject had attracted D'Alembert's attention. This work also includes the proof of the binomial theorem for an unrestricted real index which is still known by Euler's name ... The second volume of the algebra treats of indeterminate or Diophantine algebra. This contains the solutions of some of the problems proposed by Fermat, and which had hitherto remained unsolved." (Ball). <br/><br/> "Euler proved the impossibility of solving x3+y3=z3 in which x, y, and z are integers, xyz ?0 (a particular case of Fermat's last theorem); his demonstration, based on the method of infinite descent and using complex numbers of the form a+b(-3)<½> , is thoroughly described in his Vollständige Anleitung zur Algebra, the second volume of which has a large section devoted to Diophantine analysis." (DSB). <br/><br/> Euler composed his famous 'Algebra' in German in 1765-6, soon after his return to St Petersburg from Berlin. He was by then partially blind, and dictated the work to a young valet. Publication of the original German version (as offered here) was, however, delayed until 1770 and thus came to be preceded by a Russian translation by his students Peter Inokhodtsev and Ivan Yudin which was issued in 1768-9. This Russian translation is practically unobtainable; OCLC locates just one copy worldwide. The offered original German edition is also very rare with just two copies being auctioned in the past fifty years (Norman 1998 & Honeyman 1979). <br/><br/> Norman 735; Honeyman 1075; Eneström 387 & 388; Truesdell, Leonard Euler: Supreme Geometer, 1972; Albrecht Heeffer, The Rhetoric of Problems in Algebra Textbooks from Pacioli to Euler, pp.4-5; Ball, A Short Account of the History of Mathematics, p.397.
