"The greater part of his numerous works was indeed compiled from the writings of others: an indiscriminate and often unauthorized procedure. L'Héritier established (not validly) a genus B u c h o z i a "to take revenge". The species inquestion, Lucium foetidum L.f., had a bad odor and was - according to L'Héitier - excellently suited for that particular purpose" (Stafleu/Cowan 1976). The bibliography of the Buchoz publications is difficult and complicated because of the rarity of many of the items. Paris: Chez Musier, Fils, & Fournier, 1768.. 8,316,[3]pp. Half title. Original plain wrappers, later manuscript paper label. Wrappers moderately worn. Very light occasional foxing. Else near fine. In a half morocco and cloth box. A rare account by the commander of the 1720 French scientific expedition to Louisiana, the French West Indies, and the Gulf of Mexico. Vallette Laudun led the first detailed survey made of Louisiana by the French government, three years after the founding of New Orleans and at the height of enthusiasm over John Law's Mississippi Company. "Vallette was the commander of the TOULOUSE, which sailed from Toulon in March, 1720, and reached Dauphin Island, on Mobile Bay, early in July" - Clark. The text consists of 132 letters to an unnamed French lady, which collectively provide a vivid picture of Vallette Laudun's voyage, the French dominions in Louisiana and the Mississippi Valley, and the things Vallette Laudun saw there. The same voyage is described in Laval's sumptuous work of 1728. Not in Servies, but should be, as the author led the survey described by Laval, which Servies does include. One of the rarest early publications about Louisiana. HOWES V12. CLARK I:164. BELL V14. SABIN 98393.

London. 1768.. Mezzotint engraving, 36 x 53 cm. A very good, clean impression. This handsome view of one of the most famous sights in colonial America was originally drawn by Governor Thomas Pownall, the enlightened British administrator who served in the American colonies in the 1750s and '60s. It was part of Pownall's larger project to create or commission a series of views in the British dominions in America from Quebec to the Caribbean, issued in parts in the 1760s and collectively in 1768 as SCENOGRAPHIA AMERICANA, with a total of twenty-eight plates. Only a few complete sets are known, and the plates generally appear singly, as here. This view was drawn by Pownall on one of his trips while governor of Pennsylvania and New York, probably about 1759. The Cohoes Falls on the Mohawk, now submerged beneath the water behind a dam, were a famous natural phenomenon in America, on the edge of what was then wilderness and before the more spectacular Niagara was reachable by anyone but fur traders. Pownall's view, taken from downstream looking up at the falls, captures the untamed wildness of the scene in a dramatic way. This, as are all of the SCENOGRAPHIA... views, is rare. DEÁK, PICTURING AMERICA 106 (for a list of the views in the SCENOGRAPHIA AMERICANA).

His work prompted the SPCK to publish 20,000 copies (8000 more than originally intended) of the Welsh Bible in 1769. See ODNB for a full Bio.

Exceedingly Rare and Important D.S. by the Original Residents of Texas

Mexico, 1768. unbound. CARLOS FRANCISCO de CROIX - (1699 - 1786) - Viceroy of New Spain [Mexico] who served during the period of Great Turbulence. The sole purpose of his five year administration (1766 - 1771) was absolute obedience to the king, whom he always referred to as "Mi amo" Exceedingly rare and historically important D.S., folio, 2pp., in Spanish (roughly translated), A Royal Proclamation: El Marquis de Croix, March 9, 1768, ordering the mine-owners to make concessions and increase wages, in small part: "....A decline in mining...the mines have the common enemy of water, which has flooded them...the excessive construction cost of which the Kingdom has no wealth. Is the relief moderation the price you ask as the best mines are completely uninhabited and desolate? Send my fatherly love to my vassals (subjects)....I'll strive by all means...that they are fruitful. I've visited the Council of the Indies. Faith issued...and the moderate price of quicksilver...which is distributed to the miners, a part of the quarto, has so far been given for relief to support the work" . "I command you, with consequences, that you publish and carefully observe that the above ceiling of a fourth part of the price at which would have been taken in given to the miners...ending the embargo. Also, by Royal Proclamation, inserted within, it is free of tax". Also signed by: MANUEL RODRIGUEZ - (1697 - 1772) %u2013 Military leader on the Coahuila-Texas frontier, esteemed explorer, and one of Texas greatest Indian fighters. After the departure of Jacinto de Barrios y Jaurequi in February of 1768 %u2013 he became brief interim Governor and military commandant of the Province. Rare signature as Commandant and Governor of the Province. *According to the Texas State Historical Association: "It was not until recently that archivists were aware that Rodriguez was a Governor...a fact scarcely noted by historians. Very good. In 1767 he expelled the Jesuits from the colony, removing them from their Monasteries and Colleges, allowing them to leave with scarcely the clothes on their backs. These measures provoked a rebellion in which the Viceroy dealt severely with the rebels, proclaiming censorship of literary and scientific publications (1768) and hanging the leaders of the uprising. No sooner had opposition been eliminated, de Croix turned his attention toward the war-seeking Apache and Comanche Indian tribes - financing and authorizing an expedition led by Captain de Galvez into Nueva Vizcaya, whereby the Indians were soundly defeated. In March 1768, following the slow-downs, boycotts and disturbances in the mines of Guanajuato and Pachuca over the low wages paid to the miners, de Croix stunned the Colony by siding with the miners and forcing the mine-owners to agree to an increase in wages. His actions were deemed "One of the most significant social reforms in the New World" at that time.

An Historical Dissertation Concerning the Antiquity of the English Constitution

London: A. Kincaid & J. Bell; and for W. Sanby, J. Dodsley, E. Dilly and T. Cadell, 1768. xii, 290pp, [2]. Bound in modern full calf, raised bands, spine in six panels, morocco title label to second panel, remaining panels with central fleuron in blind, covers bordered with double fillet with central panel and fleuron corners in blind. Externally very good indeed, internally lightly browned throughout, with previous owners to head of title and authors name in ms. beneath. Stuart, Gilbert (1743-1786), historian and political writer, "wrote An Historical Dissertation Concerning the Antiquity of the English Constitution. Published in 1768, the work summarizes the history of English liberty from the time of the first Britons to the Norman invasion. Implicit in this whiggish perspective was a challenge to David Hume, whose History of England had put a relativist historiographical agenda at the forefront of the debate on the nature of British liberty. In this ambitious attempt to synthesize the conjectural method of such writers as Kames and Adam Ferguson with the controversial approach of his relative Thomas Ruddiman, Stuart applied the legal scholarship of Montesquieu and John Dalrymple" (ODNB). This popular layman's guide by one of the most prolific legal writers of eighteenth-century England went through ten English editions between 1736 and 1788. The mention of "All Manner of Persons" in the subtitle is significant. Jacob, though certainly interested in boosting sales by attracting the widest audience possible, was an idealist who believed that widespread knowledge of the law would help create a more just society. This is also evident in his other publications, such as The Common Law Common-Placed (1726)

Historic Doubts on the Life and Reign of King Richard the Third

      J. Dodsley, London 1768 - Full contemporary calf over marbled boards, spine in six compartments separated by raised bands, gilt lettering on black label in one compartment. Illustrated with two full-page woodcuts, a frontispiece portrait of Richard III and one of Richard with his queen, Anne. Includes a one page "Addition" concerning the subsequent history of Catherine Gordon, the widow of Perkin Warbeck. The first edition, also published in 1768, but in a limited edition of 1,250 copies, sold out very quickly, and a second edition (of which this copy is one) was published in the same year. Walpole's goal was to rehabilitate the character of Richard the Third, whom Walpole felt had been unfairly vilified by earlier historians. Horatio Walpole, 4th Earl of Orford (1717-1797) was an English art historian, man of letters, antiquarian and Whig politician. He is now largely remembered for Strawberry Hill, the home he built in Twickenham, southwest London where he revived the Gothic style some decades before his Victorian successors, for his Historic Doubts on the Life and Reign of King Richard the Third; and for his Gothic novel, The Castle of Otranto. He was the son of Sir Robert Walpole, and cousin of Admiral Lord Nelson. In Historic Doubts on the Life and Reign of King Richard III (1768), Walpole defended Richard III against the common belief that he murdered the Princes in the Tower. In this he has been followed by other writers, such as Josephine Tey and Valerie Anand. Expertly refurbished, label and spine exceptionally fresh and clean, boards rubbed and worn, former owner's small printed bookplate on fep with brief pencil notations. VERY GOOD. Woodcuts. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. xv, [1], 134, [2] pp [Attributes: Hard Cover]

A Collection of Statutes Relating to the Admiralty

London,: Mark Baskett, 1768.. Thick quarto, with woodblock frontispiece ornament; sporadic moderate water-staining, touch of marginal worming affects the final gatherings; yet a very good copy overall in handsome contemporary speckled calf, spine with raised bands and original gilt lettered morocco labels. Magnificently bound compendium of naval and marine law covering a fascinating array of subjects including the longitude prize, mutiny, the South Sea Company, the North West passage and even details of fines and other punishments for foul mouthed and blasphemous sailors. Relatively compact editions such as this one were published for ready reference by officers at sea.Of particular interest are five Acts relating to the longitude prize totalling 33 pages. The first Act of 1753 renders the original prize offered by Queen Anne 'more effectual' and names John Harrison as the recipient of some £1,250 (indeed, Harrison's chronometer is the specific subject of three of the Acts in this book). The pivotal 1764 'Act for the Encouragement of John Harrison, to publish and make known his Invention of a Machine or Watch, for the Discovery of Longitude at Sea' is printed in full. It specifies further rewards paid to Harrison in due increments: 'the utility of the invention of the said John Harrison has been proved in a late voyage to Jamaica under the directions of the commissioners of longitude...did thereupon make an order for the payment of the sum of two thousand five hundred pounds ...' Of great significance is the protection awarded to the skilled horologist by this Act - it effectively freezes further payment of the longitude prize to any rival watchmaker until the merits of Harrison's chronometer be ascertained (within four years of the passing of the Act). The final longitude Act in this collection (Geo. III Cap. 20) regards the respective merits of competing methods, asserting the claim of Harrison to further prize monies alongside regulations for the publication of nautical almanacks and lunar ephemerides.Printed in the same year as Cooks departure on the Endeavour, this book provides astonishing insights into life at sea in both the navy and merchant marine. Subjects include piracy, insurance fraud, smugglers, the plague and quarantine of ships in port, press gangs, the Articles of War, generous rewards offered by the King for important geographical discoveries, and much more.

Dell' Azione del Cuore ne' Vasi Sanguigni. Nuove Osservazioni

1 p.l., 71, [1] pp. Small 4to, orig. semi-stiff boards, uncut. [Modena: 1768]. First edition and a lovely copy of one of the author's scarcer books. Spallanzani's Dell' azione del cuore ne' vasi sanguini, "outlined his findings on the action of the heart upon the blood vessels and was addressed to the great physiologist Albrecht von Haller... "Haller's microscopic observations of blood movements in his Deux mémoires sur le mouvement du sang (1756) had been made by refracted light on medium-sized vessels in the isolated mesentery of the frog. Spallanzani, using P. Lyonet's novel dissecting apparatus, conducted his observations mostly in a darkened room with reflected light from sunbeams impinging upon exposed parts of the aquatic salamander. He systematically noted how the cardiac systolic force motivated the blood circulation. The rhythmic inequality of blood flow in the aorta and large vessels disappeared in medium and small arteries, becoming regular and uniform. The velocity diminished in the smaller vessels, but sinuosities did not retard the flow. In the smallest vessels, individual red corpuscles negotiated acute angles and folds by elastically changing shape. The blood velocity in the venous system increased as the caliber of the vessels enlarged. Haller responded to the many amplifications and corrections of his work by securing Spallanzani's election to the Royal Society of Sciences of Göttingen."-D.S.B., XII, p. 556. Joannes Jacobus Haidius pictor et chalcographus

[Nuremberg]: 1768. Mezzotint, on laid paper. 15 1/2 x 10 3/8 inches. 20 1/2 x 14 1/2 inches. A striking mezzotint portrait of Johann Jakob Haid, by Haid's son and business partner, after the 1766 original portrait by Graff. Johann Jakob Haid came from a German family of artists and printmakers. Haid worked initially with the animal painter Johann Elias Ridinger, but he soon went on to found a well-known publishing house in Augsburg. This portrait is from a series which pictured those most closely involved in the publication of Trew's Plantae Selectae, and was originally bound into that great botanical work.

Anfangsgründe zür Zeichnungskünst vor Anfänger in XX Küpferrissen bestehend

Nuremberg: Christoph Riegels seele Wittib, 1768. Soft cover. Very Good. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. 4to. 20 ff. engraved plates. Bound in contemporary blind-ruled calf, damage to head and tail of spine, top corners of boards. Letters inked in lower margin of title-page, large ink stain on verso of pl. 6, some soiling and thumbing throughout. Generally good. Extremely rare first edition of this anonymous model-book for young drawing students, printed at the Nuremberg firm founded by Christoph Riegel and continued by his widow and heirs. Following an engraved title-page, the work presents 19 full-page plates of figurative models, beginning with eyes, ears, and lips and progressing to faces, hands, feet, arms, legs and torsos. Plates 4, 5 and 6 provide proportional diagrams for drawing faces and heads; Plate 13 introduces crosshatched and heavily shaded figures, which are illustrated side-by-side with their simpler outlines. The final two engravings, depicting a man half-seated on a rock and a winged seraphim blowing a horn, serve as concluding exercises that combine the skills practiced in the previous plates. We have been unable to locate this work in any library or institution, and considering that the volume was intended for children, it is likely that most copies were either destroyed through overzealous use or simply discarded after a few abortive drawing-lessons. The present copy is fortunate to have suffered neither fate.*Schumann, Index Locupletissimus Librorum (1834), p. 66; Allgemeine Literaturzeitung (1801), Band 2, p. 480. Not in BK.

A Sentimental Journey Through France and Italy by Mr. Yorick

London: T. Becket and P.A. De Hondt, 1768. Two small octavo volumes. (ii), xx, 203; (iv), 208 pp. First edition, first issue. Bound with the rare advertisement leaf promising completion of the work the following year and including a list of subscribers. Also, a frontispiece portrait of Jens Baggesen, an eighteenth century Danish writer who was greatly influenced by Sterne, has been inserted at the beginning of volume I. The portrait was probably inserted by the Danish collector whose library this book came from. The provenance further includes Lord Gray, whose bookplate appears on the inside front cover of volume I. A Sentimental Journey is Sterne's best-known work apart from Tristram Shandy. Bound in contemporary marbled boards with calf spines, gilt in six compartments with red morocco titles. A very nice copy, with virtually no foxing. Housed in a morocco-backed, marbled slipcase labeled Baggeseniana in gilt on the spine, with the title "Yorick's Labyrint," a combination of Sterne's original title and the title of Baggesen's similar work, "The Labyrinth." A delightfully calculated obfuscation -- Sterne and Baggesen would approve.

A Sentimental Journey through France and Germany by Mr. Yorick

London: Printed by T. Becket and P..A.. de Hondt in the Strand, 1768. First edition. Original full brown calf, raised bands, gilt rules and gilt ruled borders to sides.. Volume II lacks the advertisement leaf (rarely found) and the rear free endpaper is present but defective. Small brown mark on pp. 206/207 (blood? boot polish?).Faint water stain at foot of half title in Vol.II. Otherwise a few minor spots; generally internally clean, bindings tender and rather worn, but a good copy of an important first edition. Octavo (90 x 150mm), pp. xx + 203; [iv] +208. Speckled edges. Bookplate of 'William Sturge' on front pastedowns of both volumes. This copy has the correct spellings of vol. I, p. 150, l. 12 "vous"; and vol. II, p. 133, last line "who have". Walpole commented in a letter to G.Montagu as soon as the book was published, that Sterne's "two little volumes . . ..are very pleasing, though too much dilated, and infinitely preferable to his tiresome Tristram Shandy" which he thought much too long. "In these there is great good-nature, and strokes of delicacy." Sterne himself thought it would "please the multitude, especially the women who will read this book in the parlour, and Tristram in the bed-chamber".

Mr William Shakespeare his Comedies, Histories, and Tragedies,

London: Printed by Dryden Leach, for J. and R. Tonson,, [1768]. set out by himself in quarto, or by the Players his Fellows in folio, and now faithfully republish'd from their Editions in ten Volumes octavo; with an Introduction: Whereunto will be added, in some other Volumes, Notes, critical and explanatory, and a Body of Various Readings entire. 10 volumes, octavo (181 × 118 mm). Contemporary red straight-grain morocco, smooth spines gilt-lettered direct, gilt dotted rolls to spine and covers, gilt decorative rules to turn-ins, marbled endpapers, gilt edges, pale blue silk bookmarks. Vignette portrait of Shakespeare at end of introduction. Bookplates. Spines a little faded and rubbed, minimal spotting to a couple of gatherings, overall an excellent set in contemporary red morocco. First edition of Capell's Shakespeare. "It was the first edition to be prepared from a complete transcript rather than a marked-up copy of the previous edition, and it marked a change of editorial policy in which the textus receptus was rejected in favour of an unusually meticulous collation of the early quartos [of which Capell had 55 in his own collection] and first folio. Pegge records that Lord Dacre wrote to Capell as the 'Restorer of Shakespeare', and that Capell wept on reading the letter. Capell was the first to drop Rowe's anecdotal account of Shakespeare's life; he set the agenda for the documentary research of Edmond Malone into Shakespearian chronology and biography" (ODNB). The edition is also distinguished by its attractive typography and wide margins. The "Notes" and "Various Readings" promised in the first title page (the titles of the later volumes are much briefer) were not published until after Capell's death, rather haphazardly collected in three quarto volumes, 1783.

Viaggio Intorno al Mondo Fatto Dalla Nave Inglese il Delfino Comandata dal Capo Squadra ByronÖ

Firenze,: Giuseppe Allegrini, 1768.. Square octavo, engraved frontispiece, 4, 152 pp., a few ink marks on the title-page but remarkably fresh throughout, untrimmed, in serviceable modern boards. Most uncommon contemporary Italian edition of the famous account of Byron's circumnavigation by Charles Clerke. As would be expected, the edition includes an excellent new version of the famous frontispiece of an English sailor offering a towering Patagonian couple a biscuit.First published in London in 1767, and quickly followed by a French translation, this Italian edition is very scarce. It would appear to be based on the first London edition (because it does not include a short appendix that was included in the second London edition, also of 1767). We have never seen another copy offered for sale. This famous unauthorised account of "Foul-Weather Jack" Byron's command of the Dolphin on the 1764-66 circumnavigation of the globe was published anonymously but is usually attributed to midshipman Charles Clerke who later sailed on all three of Cook's voyages. Byron's voyage to the Pacific was the first major English voyage in the region since Anson, and would become the first part of Hawkesworth's famous compendium of South Sea voyages. This account became the basis for a dozen or more European editions and translations over the next twenty years. Clerke later served with Captain Cook on all three of his voyages, succeeding him as commander of the third voyage but shortly after dying of tuberculosis at Petropavlovsk in August 1779.Byron's expedition was an important precursor of the voyages of Wallis, Carteret and Cook, but its immediate contemporary impact was the sensation created by rumours of Patagonian giants encountered by the expedition. These tall stories gained currency from a report sent in jest by Clerke to the Royal Society (and printed in the Philosophical Transactions for 1767), and from a similar account published in this book. Extraordinarily, the stories seem to have been encouraged by the British government to divert attention from Byron's taking possession of the Falklands (Malvinas), politically the most sensitive and controversial aspect of his voyage. The amusing affair of the Patagonian giants embroiled many great figures of the Enlightenment including Voltaire (see discussion by Helen Wallis in Byron's Journal, ed. Gallagher, appendix III, and by P.G. Adams, Travelers and Travel Liars, ch. II).O'Reilly-Reitman, 243.

Dublin: Printed for J. Milliken, 1768.. [2],253,[1]pp. Small octavo. Modern three quarter calf and marbled boards, raised bands, gilt labels. Illustrations of farming implements. Text block intermittently tanned, with occasional marginal smudges, modest soiling and discolorations, several old stamps of a defunct mercantile library. An ordinary copy, now preserved in a satisfying binding. First Dublin edition of one of Young's earliest major works, published in the same year as the London edition. This is an edition of some rarity - ESTC locates only five copies: two at Trinity College, and three in the U.S., at Columbia, the Library Company and the Univ. of Kansas. Based on his extensive tours of the British Isles and Ireland, Young amassed a significant body of first hand information and statistics that did much to help raise the standards of agriculture. In 1793, he was appointed the first Secretary of the Board of Agriculture, the predecessor of the Royal Agricultural Society. The immediate relevance of Young's observations to Irish readers is self- evident, and in 1780 Young published similar observations based on his travels there. The London editions are appropriately recorded in Kress, Higgs, Amery/Fussell and Goldsmiths, but this edition is not. PRINTING & THE MIND OF MAN 214. ESTC N23358.

Paris, 1768. FIRST EDITION. Hardcover. Classical Botanical Work in Original Decorative Calf,With More than 180 Finely Engraved Plates. 343 x 267 mm (13 1/2 x 10 1/2"). Two volumes. FIRST EDITION. VERY PLEASING CONTEMPORARY SMOOTH CALF, ATTRACTIVELY GILT, covers with French fillet border, raised bands, spine gilt in pretty floral compartments with tulip cornerpieces and a large floral spray at center surrounded by small tools, one burgundy and one brown morocco label, turn-ins with gilt foliate role, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. WITH 181 VERY FINE ENGRAVED BOTANICAL PLATES (including an engraved frontispiece depicting a man and woman picking pears) as called for, the plates illustrating the seeds, blooms, and edible products of fruit-bearing trees. Title pages with small early circular monogram stamp. Nissen 550; Dunthorne 100; Pritzel 2466; Raphael, "Pomona" 28; Brunet II, 871. Front cover of volume II with a (well-masked) six-inch abrasion, joints of first volume beginning to crack along first compartment at top and bottom on front and at bottom on back, a few tiny wormholes and small patches of lost patina from insect activity, but the handsome original bindings entirely solid, quite lustrous, and generally well preserved. A dozen gatherings with faint overall browning because of paper stock (though the plates almost entirely unaffected), isolated rust spots and other trivial imperfections, otherwise a fine copy internally, the text especially fresh and clean, the plates richly impressed, and the margins remarkably ample. With a fine contemporary binding that measures 343 x 267 mm., this is an extremely large as well as quite pleasing copy of a beautifully illustrated book by the man Raphael calls "one of the outstanding botanists of the 18th century" in the fields of plant physiology and agriculture. Henri Duhamel du Monceau (1700-82) was a justifiably celebrated Parisian polymath who gave up on formal university training to take lodgings near the Botanical Gardens, where he pursued his own plan of learning from the director and from other distinguished persons who gathered there. He cultivated trees on his own estates, authored a number of important books on topics as diverse as agronomy, marine architecture, and ichthyology, and was a member of all the important scientific academies. This treatise on fruit culture proved to be of considerable importance, and the plates (designed by Magdeleine-Francoise Basseporte, Aubriet, and others and engraved by Catherine Haussard, P. L. Cor, Henriquez Herisset fils, Menil, Charles Milsan, Poletnich, and others) were among the most beautiful botanical engravings of the period. The text begins by describing the appropriate methods for pruning and grafting fruit trees, and goes on to discuss the different varieties of individual fruits, including 58(!) types of pears. The engravings show uncommon consistency from beginning to end in how substantial and skillfully executed they are. The images are faithful to nature, thoughtfully designed, and so finely wrought as to appear luscious. The work is uncommonly seen in an attractive contemporary binding, and is rarer still in the kind of tall copy offered here.
