        L'Homme aux quarante ecus.

      S. l., 1768.. Seul Besterman, 'The Complete Works of Voltaire', vol.

Ecken u. The work contains 11 memoires or papers on different surgical subjects. It opens with a short life of William Hunter with translations into French of his papers on hernia and aneurism with 4 splendid plates drawn by Jan van Rymsdyck. There are also papers on testicles, on hermaphrodites with 6 plates devoted to the subject, 2 further papers on aneurisms. 3 deal with surgical instruments, the first of these describes and illustrates on 5 plates a specially designed chair in which the patient is to be strapped for surgery to be performed.

Garrison & Morton, 2154 : "One of the most important works on military surgery during the 18th century. Ravaton, a skilful army surgeon, was the first to employ a tin boot, suspended on four rings, for the 'hanging' position of broken bones. He was also first to adopt the double-flap method in amputations.

FIRST EDITION . Hardcover. 432 x 279 mm (17 x 11"). Supplement to part I (numbered 1357-62) bound after p. 196 of volume I; the 44-pp. "Memoire" bound at the end of volume II, after p. 1356 (where the supplement would normally have appeared). Four volumes. FIRST EDITION. Excellent contemporary marbled calf, flat spines gilt in compartments with central fleuron encircled by small tools and with volute cornerpieces, each spine with one black and one red label, marbled endpapers. WITH 79 OFTEN VERY PLEASING ENGRAVED TECHNOLOGICAL PLATES of mining operations and equipment, three of these double-page. Front pastedowns with small round label of Bibliotheque de Sailly. Kress 6581; Brunet II, 618-19. Leather with a few minor abrasions, a significant area of one cover with loss of patina from insect activity, general light wear, but the unrestored period bindings entirely solid, with no serious signs of use, and with a pleasing shelf appearance. Three dozen leaves with slight or moderate overall browning, intermittent small, light marginal dampstains, 20 leaves with one-inch elongated wormhole at top edge (not reaching the text), a dozen plates slightly to somewhat browned, additional minor defects, otherwise excellent internally, with good margins, with strong impressions of the engravings, and with clean, fresh leaves. This treatise on coal mining comprises a survey of the state of cutting-edge technology in the 18th century. It covers the subject comprehensively, discussing geological and mineralogical explanations for the locations of coal deposits, the methods of mining coal, the state of the coal industry in France, the commerce and economics of the coal trade in Europe, and the ways--both practical and theoretical--in which coal could be employed to heat and light houses and to fuel factories and workshops. At the time of publication, French forests were being depleted of wood at an alarming rate, and there was a pressing need to find an alternate source of energy. Coal seemed the answer to the problem. Jean-François-Clément Morand (1726-84) trained as a physician but preferred to devote himself to scientific research rather than to the practice of medicine. He became a member of the Academy of Sciences in 1759, and was appointed librarian to the organization. This set is uncommonly seen in the marketplace, and when it does appear, it is usually incomplete.

Registering Mexican Indian?s Baptisms, in an entirely genuine binding. 1768-1775. Ciudad de Mexico, Parroquia de San Sebastian. In folio (290 mm x 201 mm). 1[blank] + 20 (index) + 4 [blank] + + 125 ff. Overlapping attractive Mexican sheep, front and back boards with paper labels lettered in ink, spine also with paper label, back boards lettered in ink, mostly covered by label, slightly soiled, still a most appealing original binding. Inner mainly marginal wormhole virtually throughout the book, occasionally touching text although mostly unobtrusive, last leaves with light damp stain, else very fresh and clean. A ledger of the baptisms celebrated at the Parish of San Sebastian from the 1st of January 1768 until the 6th of august 1775. Each "asiento" or entry is signed by two Priests, one is almost always Jose Sensuto, the others are Juan Bautista Bravo, Joseph Guevara, Ignacio de Yglesia, Miguel Francisco de Ayala, Juan Francisco Belmonte, Antonio de Pardo, Lino Nepomuceno Gomez, Manuel Velazquez, Mariano Gutierrez, Francisco Palacios; amongst others. A note accompanies the entries on the respective margin indicating the name of the native being baptized, forexample "Juana Maria de Nepomuceno India". Up to the number 470 the entries are numbered, possibly right around a third of the work. The manuscript is set in a very legible pair of hands, changing at the year 1771. Such manuscripts are relevant for their ethnographical aspect; they mark a period when the native population, often without consideration of will, was converted into Christianity. Furthermore it provides a considerable account on the names of natives in the 18th century. The binding is completely artisanal and locally made; it is possibly one of the most attractive and well-preserved colonial Mexican bindings we have encountered. A splendid testimony of Mexican book-binding.

Vollständige Anleitung zur Algebra.St. Petersburg: Kaiserliche Academie der Wissenschaften, 1770.

First edition of Euler's great textbook of algebra in its language of composition, preceded only by an extremely rare Russian translation published in 1768-9 by two of his students. "Euler's Vollständige Anleitung zur Algebra is not only the most popular textbook on elementary algebra, with the exception of Euclid's Elements it is the most widely printed book on mathematics." (Truesdell). It "was translated into Russian (1768-9), Dutch (1773), French (1774), Latin (1790), English (1797, 1822) and Greek (1800). The popular German edition from Reclam Verlag sold no less than 108,000 copies between 1883 and 1943 (Reich, 1992). After 240 years this algebra textbook is still in print today, available in several languages and editions" (Heeffer). <br/><br/> "In 1770 Euler published his 'Vollständige Anleitung zur Algebra'... The first volume treats of determinate algebra. This contains one of the earliest attempts to place the fundamental processes on a scientific basis: the same subject had attracted D'Alembert's attention. This work also includes the proof of the binomial theorem for an unrestricted real index which is still known by Euler's name ... The second volume of the algebra treats of indeterminate or Diophantine algebra. This contains the solutions of some of the problems proposed by Fermat, and which had hitherto remained unsolved." (Ball). <br/><br/> "Euler proved the impossibility of solving x3+y3=z3 in which x, y, and z are integers, xyz ?0 (a particular case of Fermat's last theorem); his demonstration, based on the method of infinite descent and using complex numbers of the form a+b(-3)<½> , is thoroughly described in his Vollständige Anleitung zur Algebra, the second volume of which has a large section devoted to Diophantine analysis." (DSB). <br/><br/> Euler composed his famous 'Algebra' in German in 1765-6, soon after his return to St Petersburg from Berlin. He was by then partially blind, and dictated the work to a young valet. Publication of the original German version (as offered here) was, however, delayed until 1770 and thus came to be preceded by a Russian translation by his students Peter Inokhodtsev and Ivan Yudin which was issued in 1768-9. This Russian translation is practically unobtainable; OCLC locates just one copy worldwide. The offered original German edition is also very rare with just two copies being auctioned in the past fifty years (Norman 1998 & Honeyman 1979). <br/><br/> Norman 735; Honeyman 1075; Eneström 387 & 388; Truesdell, Leonard Euler: Supreme Geometer, 1972; Albrecht Heeffer, The Rhetoric of Problems in Algebra Textbooks from Pacioli to Euler, pp.4-5; Ball, A Short Account of the History of Mathematics, p.397. A very fine copy.. 2 volumes, 8vo (194 x 122 mm), bound in two, fine contemporary German calf with raised bands and spine labels (capital of second volume with a little shipping and upper part of front hinge slightly cracked, but still fine and completely unrepaired), pp. [16] [1-3] 4-356; [2] [1-3] 4-532 [2:errata]. Like other self-educated men, Reed formed an unwarrantably high opinion of his own literary achievements. But he had a caustic wit, and wrote with much energy. Farquar is usually classed among the writers of English Restoration comedy, though he stands a little apart from them, both chronologically and in showing more variety of plot, depth of feeling, and, in his later and best plays, a more conscious effort to adapt the licentiousness of the early comedy of manners to the changing taste of the time. Cumberland turned to writing drama because he needed the money. Kelly wrote pieces which at the time eclipsed his literary rival, Goldsmith. -- "as it is Performed at the Theatre-Royal in Covent Garden; The Recruiting Officer. Adresse. »

Politics in Middle Ages England was dominated by struggles between the crown and the church, and Henry II&#39;s reign is probably best remembered for the murder of Thomas a&#39;Beckett by several of Henry&#39;s knights. .
