        Lilo-Narcissus II, West-Indische rothe Lilie

Nuremberg 1768 - The “Hortus Nitidissimis Omnem Per Annum Superbiens Floribus Sive Amoenissimorum Florum Imagines” was published between 1750 and 1786 as a periodical intended, when collected, to form an unmatched collection of botanical prints. The engravings are based on the drawings collected from various artists by the famous Nuremberg physician and amateur botanist Christopher Jacob Trew. Although the plates were produced using engraving techniques common to the period, each plate was completed individually through hand coloring. The variations in plates between different known volumes indicates that more than one artist was involved in this process. These variations render every volume of the work unique. Trew’s good friend Georg Dionysius Ehret, considered the most important and influential botanical artist of the mid-18th century, was a chief artist of this endeavor. Ehret was born to farmers in Heidelberg, Germany in 1708, and showed an early propensity for drawing. As a young man he was employed primarily as a gardener and he used his time spent gardening to examine and practice drawing botanicals and the natural world around him. Eventually his art attracted the attention of Dr. Trew who gave Ehret financial patronage and with whom he worked on the Hortus Nitidissimis as well as Plantae Selectae. These botanical engravings are considered the finest records of cultivated flowers of the time and are noted as being precisely engraved and exquisitely colored. This hand colored engraving, Lilo-Narcissus II, West-Indische rothe Lilie, 20” x 14”, is in excellent condition. Narcissus is a genus of flowering bulbs, commonly referred to as daffodils. This vibrant hand colored engraving shows the blooming orange flower with yellow details and dynamically colored stems in a more abstract manner, that further conveys the beauty of this flower. Also shown are the bulb and roots.

London and Paris: Desaint, 1768 - 2 works bound in two volumes, duodecimo (163 × 92 mm). Contemporary mottled calf, spines decorated gilt in compartments, red morocco labels, red edges. A superb copy. Engraved bookplate of Mr. Brossays Duperray to front pastedowns First separate edition of undoubtedly one of the scarcest of Dupont's works, and probably one of the most successful publications promoting physiocracy, first published in the journal, Ephémérides du Citoyen. The work is based on Le Mercier de la Rivière's L'Ordre naturel et essentiel des Sociétés politiques (with which it is here bound), which Adam Smith referred to as "the most distinct and best connected account of this doctrine". Schumpeter, in his discussion on the physiocrats, calls Dupont "by far the ablest of the lot" (p. 226) and Palgrave notes; "If Quesnay was the father of physiocracy, Dupont was its godfather, for he gave it its name by the publication of his Physiocratie. a collection of Quesnay's articles, which the editor introduced by a Discours."       [Philadelphia. ca. 1768-1769].. Broadside, 13 x 8 1/4 inches. Printed in three columns. Sheet trimmed close around text. Three small tears in edges, intruding slightly into the text, but with no loss. Old fold lines. About very good. An unrecorded American colonial broadside, printing the text of a letter from the British consul in Naples to Dr. John Morgan in Philadelphia, and giving a firsthand account of the 1767 eruption of Vesuvius. Jamineau describes the first warning signs of the eruption, as black clouds emanated from the volcano, followed by severe tremblings in the earth. He then recounts how the lava flowed out of the volcano in all directions, forcing the king to evacuate his palace and retreat toward Naples and beyond. The aftermath of the eruption is also described, as smoke and ash emanated from Vesuvius for a week. Jamineau also includes a history of Vesuvius eruptions dating back to 79 A.D. John Morgan, Jamineau's correspondent, was born in Philadelphia in 1735 and studied medicine in England and France before returning to the American colonies to practice medicine and teach. He was an important force in spreading the teaching of medical techniques in the colonies, helped found the American Society for Promoting Useful Knowledge in 1766-67, was a physician at the Pennsylvania Hospital, and was named medical director of the Continental Army in 1775. The caption title of this broadside notes that it was "published by order of" the American Society for Promoting Useful Knowledge. Though it is undated, the American Society for Promoting Useful Knowledge was merged with the American Philosophical Society in 1769 and subsumed its name to that of the older organization, so it is likely that this was printed sometime in 1768 or 1769. We can find no record of this broadside in Evans, Bristol, Shipton & Mooney, NAIP, Hildebrand, or OCLC. Unrecorded, interesting, and apparently unique.

Journal d'un Voyage à la Louisiane fait en 1720. Par M***, Capitaine de Vaisseau du Roi

The Hague, 'et se trouve à Paris': Chez Muiser, Fils, & Fournier, 1768. 12mo. Contemporary sheep-backed figured paper-covered boards, spine in six compartments with raised bands, the bands flanked by double gilt fillets, lettering-piece in the second compartment A fine copy of the first edition of one of the rarest early publications about Louisiana. The author of this work, De Vallette-Laudun, was the commander of the Toulouse , and led the French government-backed scientific expedition of 1720 to Louisiana, the French West Indies and Gulf of Mexico. It resulted in the first detailed survey of Louisiana, just three years after the founding of New Orleans, at the height of enthusiasm over John Law's Mississippi Company. The present epistolary narrative contains 132 letters addressed to an unnamed lady, which together provide a vivid picture of the expedition and include interesting details concerning Santo Domingo, Cuba and the French settlements in Louisiana and the Mississippi valley. This is one of the rarest early works on Louisiana: just five copies are located by the Catalogue Collectif de France, and only two copies are listed as having sold at auction in France in the past fifty years. We could locate only the Littell copy selling at auction in the U.S. (Parke-Bernet, 1945). The present copy (like the Littell copy) is without the two final leaves (the 'approbation censoriale' and the 'privilège'); the catalogue of the Bibliotheque Nationale de France notes that these leaves are "absents de certains exemplaires, ont dû être ajoutés après". Bell V14; Clark I:164; Howes V12; Sabin 98393. (6 1/4 x 3 1/2 inches). [1]-8, 1-316 pp. Half-title.       London. 1768.. 110pp. plus one leaf of ads. Late 19th-century three-quarter gilt morocco and marbled boards, spine gilt. Boards rubbed and worn at edges. Pages lightly soiled and tanned. A very good copy, untrimmed. The rare first edition, "quite difficult to procure complete" (Field). The Irish-born missionary was one of the most popular preachers of his day, travelling extensively in Europe as well as America. In 1760 he was sent with Duffield to observe and investigate the condition of the Indian tribes. This account, one of only a few pieces by Beatty ever to see publication, includes "the first account of Indian towns in southeast Ohio" (Howes), interviews with Indian chiefs, and encounters with Delaware Indians, whom Beatty conjectures to be descended from the Ten Tribes. "The tour of this zealous and intelligent observer to the Indian towns in Pennsylvania and Ohio, lying far beyond the frontiers, was made at a period of great interest in their history. The warriors of the Delaware and Shawnese had ravaged them with the tomahawk and firebrand for twenty years, and the Journal of the missionary is filled with notes of their awful massacres. It is very full and minute in its details of interviews with Indian chiefs, and the various phases of aboriginal life which attracted his attention" - Field. HOWES B281, "b." VAIL 589. THOMSON 72. FIELD 102. BELL B125. JCB I:1607. WINSOR I, pp.110, 116. SABIN 4149. PILLING, PROOF-SHEETS 324.

Later editions benefited from the earlier work of Sir William Dugdale, whose Baronage of England had been published in 1675. At some stage, Collins also acquired a manuscript of Dugdale's work, which had been owned by Gregory King, Lancaster herald, with his own notes. Collins' work became the basis for Sir Egerton Brydges' edition of the peerage published in 1812; and finally, of course, for Cockayne's "monumental" Complete Peerage (1887 - 1898).         A Map of North America, from the Latest Surveys and Maps by John Blair LLD & FRS,

London 1768 - First Edition, a copper engraved map of North America engraved by Thomas Kitchin , late colouring, a single sheet measuring 415mm by 570mm, with copperplate mark and margins measuring 468mm by 630mm, with good quality 6 line and wash border mount, overall measurement 580mm by 720mm, With fold marks as usual but in very good condition. This large detailed map was printed when Britain still held the thirteen American colonies prior to the American War of Independence. It is an important map of British North America showing the eastern territories. It maps Indian tribes, rivers, cities, towns and non existent islands on Lake Superior. John Blair, died 1782, Church of England Clergyman and Chronologist, was descended from the Blairs of Balthayock, Perthshire Scotland. He was born and educated in Edinburgh, where he trained for a career in the Church of Scotland along with Hugh Blair, Alexander Carlyle, John Home, William Robertson, and other young men who would become well known for their association with the Scottish Enlightenment. He visited London with a patrimony of several hundred pounds and remained in London for the rest of his life. In the early 1750's Blair issued proposals for printing by subscription the "General Chronology and History of the World" which was published in the summer of 1754. The book quickly became the standard work of its kind and was frequently reprinted throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. To the 1768 edition Blair added a set of fourteen large elegant engraved maps and "A Dissertation on the Rise and Progress of Geography". This series of fourteen maps were the only maps he ever published. A French translation of the Chronology and History of the World appeared in Paris in 1797 and there were several American editions in the 1820's. A London edition was published as late as 1904. The success of Blair's work led to the author's election as a Fellow of the Royal Society of London in 1755. In 1761 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Antiquaries.

Edinburgh: Printed by A. Donaldson, 1766 - 1768. - Three volumes: vi,2,viii,516; [4],692; [2],iv,745pp., plus three folding frontispiece maps. Contemporary calf, ruled in gilt, sympathetically rebacked in matching calf, spines tooled in gilt, gilt leather labels. General chart of the southern hemisphere with a closed split along one fold. Scattered light foxing. Very good. With the bookplate of Sir Thomas Munro, first baronet and an administrator in India who held important financial and judicial posts, and was eventually made governor of Madras. An important early collection of texts on the discovery, exploration, natural history, geography and commerce of Australia. Callander's work takes as its basis that of Comte de Brosses, published ten years earlier, but supplemented by additional material and by Callander's editorial notes. Callander saw Australia as a fertile land for colonization and settlement, and argued that Great Britain, because of her naval dominance, was destined to rule there. He proposed a penal settlement as a base for colonization and further exploration. The work contains many important narratives (some of them included in whole, others in part), including those of Magellan, Drake, Dampier, Tasman, Quiros, Gamboa, Ulloa, Narbrough, Frezier, Anson, and others. The maps include a chart of the Straits of Magellan, another of the southern hemisphere, and a third showing Australia. "A work of great Australian importance, containing forty-one relations of voyages, some for the first time in English.the Callander map is of great interest, particularly when compared with the Tasman map of 1644. Although Van Dieman's Land is still shown as part of the mainland, New Zealand and New Guinea are already known to be separate lands, and in fact the outline of Australia is complete except for the eastern coast, yet to be charted by Cook" - Davidson. "Valuable both for its narratives and for its editorial comments" - Hill. The first volume in this set contains a dedication to Charles Townshend, Chancellor of the Exchequer; the third volume a dedication to Sir Laurence Dundas. HILL 240. DAVIDSON, p.35.
