(Manuscript lunar charts with movable parts). - Two manuscript charts on lunar astronomy with mounted and movable parts of the moon's passage through the Pleiades at New Year's Eve, 1767, and another from the same hand of the partial lunar eclipse on January, 4th 1768, both as seen from Leipzig. Obviously manufactured during the observations in Leipzig, Saxony.

Saxony, 1767-68.. Black ink on recto and verso of two strong cardboards. Measurements: 23 x 22 cm (partial lunar eclipse) and 20,5 x 27 cm (moon's passage through the Pleiades). Corners minorily bumped, lightly browned in places, but all together very well preserved especially for items that include movable parts for demonstrational purposes. A very unusual set of manuscript lunar charts, obviously drawn during the celestial occurences described and precisely measured on them. Unfortunately, they are unsigned and the authorship therefore remains unclear. The design of the charts, however, talks in favour of the author having been in a position enabling him to make use of elaborate astronomical instruments, and would that most probably not be the case if he was a privateer instead of a person, who by profession was connected to a university or an observatory: The charts bear normal captions as well as some which are mirror-inverted, clearly pointing towards that they had been manufactured (and later used for presentation) by the combination of an astronomical telescope and a projection instrument. The lunar motion shown on the front side of each one of the charts could so repeatedly be demonstrated for educational purposes and at the same time be compared with the time scales on the backside, simply by placing the charts between the viewer and a mirror, with the front side of the charts facing the mirror.

Contemporary gilt half calf with marbled boards and title lable to spine. 328 pp., 3 ff., title with a decent contemporary ownerÂ’s stamp on verso (very difficult to read, but clearly of french origin). At his time he was known as the owner of one of the largest conchological cabinets in private hands and considered an authority in the field.

Messiah. An Oratorio in Score as it was Originally Perform'd. Composed by Mr. Handel, to which are Added his Additional Alterations, Randall & Abell, successors to the late Mr. J. Walsh. Printed By Messrs. Randall & Abell, Successors to the Late Mr. J. Walsh in Catharine Street in the Strand-of Whom May be Had the Compleat Scores of Samson, Alexander's Feast, and Acis & Galatea.

London Randell & Abell Circa 1767 - First edition, early printing of the forte-piano and vocal score, engraved portrait frontispiece by J. Houbraken, engraved title, list of subscribers, index, 188 pages engraved throughout, plus 35 Appendix pages, very occasional light marginal finger soiling, mostly to preliminary pages, else very good, quarter calf over contemporary marbled boards, rebacked with gilt morocco lettering piece, later endpapers, all edges untrimmed, mild rubbing to extremities and bumping to corners (restored), otherwise a handsome, clean, early copy. While visiting Dublin in 1742, Handel was hungry to capitalise on his eager audience following on the success of two series of concerts he gave there, so he arranged the first performance of Messiah on April 13th. The premiere of Messiah was a triumph. The alto soloist, Susanna Cibber, was an actress who had attracted scandal in the past but legend has it that her emotional performance of 'He was despised' moved Dr Patrick Delany – the husband of one of Handel's most ardent champions - to exclaim 'Woman, for this, be all your sins forgiven'. The Dublin Journal's review proclaimed that 'the best Judges allowed it to be the most finished piece of Musick. Words are wanting to express the exquisite Delight it afforded to the admiring crouded Audience. The Sublime, the Grand, and the Tender, adapted to the most elevated, majestick and moving Words, conspired to transport and charm the ravished Heart and Ear.' ESTC T189237.         The English works of Roger Ascham, preceptor to Queen Elizabeth ... with notes and observations, and the author's life. By James Bennet

London: printed for T. Davis and J. Dodsley, n.d., 1767. First edition, second issue, 4to, pp. [2], 4, [4], xvi, 395; recent brown calf-backed marbled boards; very good and sound. John Ryland's copy, with his dated (1768) signature on the title page, and with a one-and-a-quarter page quarto manuscript account by Ryland of James Bennet tipped in (33 lines, approx. 350 words), beginning "The venerable editor of this work devoted a long life, very affectionately and successfully, to the education of youth in Hertfordshire ... Dr. Johnson furnished the Life of his Author..." Ryland (1717?-1798) married the sister of John Hawkesworth. "Ryland was acquainted with Dr. Johnson for many years, and was the last surviving friend of his early life. He belonged to the old club that met weekly in 1749 at the King's Head in Ivy Lane and was broken up about 1753, and he was one of the four surviving members that dined together in 1783. He also belonged to the Essex Head Club, which Johnson formed at the close of his life. He constantly visited the doctor in his last illness, he supplied Nichols with several of the particulars which are inserted in the article in the Gentleman's Magazine for 1784 (p. 957), and attended the funeral. Several of Dr. Johnson's letters to him are included in the correspondence edited by Dr. G. B. Hill, but he is seldom mentioned by Boswell, possibly because these letters were withheld from publication in Boswell's Life" (DNB). The dedication "To Anthony Ashley Cooper, Earl of Shaftsbury," and the "Life of Roger Ascham" were written by Samuel Johnson. "Tom Davis stated that Johnson was "in reality" the editor, and that he (Johnson) gave the work to Bennet for his advantage" (Courtney). With the 4 page list of subscribers, to whom the book was originally issued in January, 1762. "This issue is distinguished by the new half-title and undated title, and by the absence of the single leaf of 'Additional Subscribers'; in all other respects it comprises the sheets from the first issue of 1761" (Fleeman).         Charter Granted by His Majesty, King Charles II

1767. First Edition . (RHODE ISLAND). The Charter Granted by His Majesty, King Charles II. To The Governor and Company of The English Colony of Rhode-Island and Providence-Plantations, in New-England, in America. BOUND WITH: Acts and Laws of the English Colony of Rhode-Island and Providence-Plantations, in New-England, in America. Printed and sold by Samuel Hall, Printer to the Honorable General Assembly, 1767. Folio, original marbled wrappers, original stitching as issued. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. $4800.Exceedingly rare 1767 Rhode Island Acts and Laws, one of only 200 copies, printed with the 1663 Royal Charter, in original marbled paper wrappers. With the 1660 restoration of the British monarch, Roger Williams's original 1644 charter was threatened by its lack of a royal seal. In 1663, Charles II granted Rhode Island a new charter, distinctively defining it as a corporate colony, with its governor, council and general assembly chosen by the people. The only other such colony was Connecticut, for elsewhere representatives were chosen by British property owners or royal appointment. As such, many Rhode Island citizens believed their charter required only ""voluntary allegiance so long as the King's interest and theirs coincided. When claims of English rights and royal power differed from claims of charter rights, Rhode Islanders insisted that charter rights had equal, not subordinate authority"" (McLoughlin, Rhode Island History, 82-3). Further the charter famously granted religious freedom with its statement that ""no Person within the said Colony, at any Time hereafter, shall be any wise molested, punished, disquieted, or called in Question, for any Differences in Opinion in Matters of Religion."" Also including the colony's reaction to the Stamp Act, laws on indentured servitude and polygamy, and one permitting conscientious objector status during war. The 1719 printing is considered the first compilation. In 1730 the second revision was published, and a third appeared in 1745. This is the ""exceedingly rare fourth revision of the Rhode Island Laws, of which only 200 copies were printed"" (Benedict 450). With separate title pages for the Charter and Acts and Laws. Without the Table, said to have been published separately, and the extremely rare final leaf on the 1746 Repeal of the Acts of the General Assembly. Benedict 450. Evans 10749. Harvard Law Catalogue II, 459. Sabin 70514. Tower 836. Contemporary owner inscription above title page dated March 22 ,1775. Text generally fresh with light scattered foxing, occasional marginal dampstaining, one leaf (2Z) with expert paper repair, affecting a few letters. A highly desirable, early colonial printing.

John Quincy Adams' Free Frank with Notation of Land Patent

      - Free Frank of John Quincy Adams as Secretary of State, One of America’s Greatest Diplomats JOHN QUINCY ADAMS (1767-1848), son of President John Adams and Abigail Adams, became the 6th President of the United States. He also served as a United States Senator, a member of the House of Representatives and Secretary of State. Adams was a member of the Federalist, Democratic-Republican, National Republican and later the Anti-Masonic and Whig parties. Adams played an important role in negotiating key treaties, as a diplomat, most notably the Treaty of Ghent, which ended the War of 1812. As Secretary of State, he negotiated with Britain over the United States’ northern border with Canada, negotiated with Spain the annexation of Florida and drafted the Monroe Doctrine. Historians generally concur he was one of the greatest diplomats and secretaries of state in American history. Adams was elected president in a close and controversial four-way contest in 1824. As president, he sought to modernize the American economy and promote education. He enacted part of his agenda and paid off much of the national debt. But he was stymied by a Congress controlled by opponents and his lack of patronage networks helped politicians sabotage him. He lost his 1828 bid for re-election to Andrew Jackson. After his presidency, Adams was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1830. He had a revulsion against slavery and predicted the Union’s dissolution over slavery. He felt the president could abolish slavery by using his war powers. Offering his bold J.Q. Adams free frank on the front panel, 3

Picturae Etruscorum in vasculis nunc primum in unum collectae, explicationibus, et dissertaionibus inlustrate .

      J. Zempel Rome -1775 1767 - First edition. 3 volumes, folio (45.5 x 29.8 cm), 3 half-titles, 3 engraved frontispieces, titles printed in red and black with engraved vignette, engraved initials, head and tailpieces, woodcut illustrations, engraved dedication leaf in volumes 2 and 3, 301 engraved plates (some double-page), 3 woodcut plates in volume 3, contemporary half pink vellum with patterned paper boards, spines gilt in compartments, uncut, some light foxing and browning, side lightly rubbed, a very good example. Passeri (1694-1780) was a respected antiquarian who primarily focused on Etruscan civilisation. This work was one of many published in the eighteenth century which saw the Etruscans as pioneers, artists and inventors whose achievements were overshadowed by the Romans. Passeri also contributes in this work to contemporary discussion on the Etruscan and Oscan languages. The three volumes illustrate vases from important collections all over Italy. Many of these vases were housed in the Galleria Clementina of the Vatican Library. Many of the vases illustrated in this work have been lost, making this publication a valuable record. A pupil of Domenichino, Passeri is first recorded as a practising artist in 1634, when he was working, together with Giovanni Angelo Canini (1617–c.1666), at the Villa Aldobrandini, Frascati. In 1638 he was admitted to the Accademia di S Luca (succeeding Domenichino as President in 1663), and in 1641 he became a member of the Virtuosi del Pantheon. In 1661 he executed frescoes in the Palazzo Pamphili, Rome, and in September 1665 he was paid by the Costaguti family for an altarpiece of the Crucifixion for their church at Roccalvecce, near Viterbo.         SOUTH CHINA SEA / KARIMATA ISLANDS, INDONESIA: A CHART OF SOME ISLANDS BETWEEN BORNEO AND BANCA, SEEN BY THE OSTERLY IN HER PASSAGE OUTWARD AND HOMEWARD, 1758 & 1759. TAKEN ON THE SPOT BY MR. JOHN POWELL, CHIEF MATE OF THE OSTERLY.

London, []. 1767 - Copper engraving (Good, strong engraving impression and full blank margins; a clean 10 cm tear entering image, but without loss and scarcely any effect upon the chart’s appearance, now closed from verso; a few small tears in blank margins, now closed from verso), sheet: 63.5 x 45.5 cm (25 x 18 inches); platemark: 59.5 x 37.5 cm (23.5 x 15 inches). A very rare sea chart of the South China Sea around the Karimata Islands, just the west of Borneo, based on an original manuscript made by the master of the ‘HMS Osterly’ during the Seven Years’ War, published by William Herbert. This very rare and fine sea chart depicts a track of the South China Sea, located between Sumatra and Borneo, focusing on the Karimata Islands. It is based on an original manuscript by John Powell, the Chief Mate of the HMS Osterly, a Royal Nay vessel that traversed these waters in 1758-9, during the Seven Years’ War. The chart was first published by William Herbert within the third edition of his very rare sea atlas, A New Directory of the East Indies (London, 1767). While these waters lay near one of the world’s great shipping routes, which ran through the Strait of Sunda up through the South China Sea, connecting Europe with the Far East, the area was, until this time, not well charted. While the Dutch East India Company (VOC) had a fine knowledge of the seas between Sumatra and Borneo, its policies of cartographic secrecy ensured that their knowledge was generally omitted from printed maps. Indeed, during the era of the Seven Years’ War (1756-63), when there was a spike in British maritime traffic in the region, the British found they possessed a very poor knowledge of this section of the South China Sea, let alone any useful charts. The HMS Osterly, travelling to and from Canton, China in 1758-9 had occasion to traverse these waters, the tracks of which are delineated on the present chart. The vessel’s Chief Master, John Powell, drafted the first detailed British chart of the region. Fortunately, the Osterly’s voyage is well recorded, as Powell’s original log, running from December 30, 1757 to February 26, 1760, is today preserved in the National Archives U.K. (ADM 55/145).
