Manoeuvres for a Battalion of Infantry, Upon Fixed Principles. With thirty-two copper plates. By a German officer. Price five shillings, bound with his former Manoeuvres and the essay on small detachments, 10s. 6d. 12s. 6d. the medium, and 15s. the Royal.

London: Printed for J. Millan, 1767 - Octavo in fours (160 x 100 mm). Recent mottled brown calf-backed blue paper boards, titles to red morocco label to spine. Boards very slightly bowed, top edge dust toned, 2 stubs visible at inner margin between pp. 8-9 due to printing error, with no effect on the collation; an excellent copy. With 20 hand-coloured folding plates. Second edition, first published in 1766 with 17 plates. A richly illustrated drill book which references a number of contemporary battles and Generals, most often the practical use of the manoeuvres mentioned in the Seven Years' War. "This small drillbook laid out a series of manoeuvres for the battalion, most of which were described in the 1764 regulations, but which were here performed in a fashion more sophisticated than that laid down in the regulations. Although only a well-trained British battalion could have performed them, they were an alternate and superior system by which the army's new manoeuvres could be carried out . where the 1764 Regulations relied on filing for most movements, those of the 'German Officer' were better tactically because they preserved a front by marching the line obliquely; and they were more speedily performed than was possible by filing." The publisher, John Millan, integrates with the letterpress advertisements for his other military titles, including "New Prussian field regulations for foot" and "Captain Miller's Art of Self-Defence", on the versos of the title and dedication pages. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

CONVERSATIONS ON THE PLURALITY OF WORLDS ... A New Translation from the Last Edition of the French, with Great Additions, Extracted from the Best Modern Authors, on Many Curious and Entertaining Subjects ... The Second Edition. By a Gentleman of the Inner-Temple

London: Printed for Thomas Caslon, at No. 4, opposite Stationers-Hall, Ludgate-street, 1767.. Octavo, pp. [i-iii] iv-xvii [xviii-xix] xx-xxvii [xxviii-xxix] xxx-xlvi [xlvii, mispaged "xlvi"] [xlviii] xlix-li [lii-liii] liv-lxiv] [1] 2-401 [402: ad], four inserted folding plates, early brown leather, spine panel tooled in gold and blind, black leather title label affixed to spine panel. The "second" edition of this anonymous translation, first published in 1760. Fontenelle's ENTRETIENS SUR LA PLURALITE DES MONDES, his most famous and frequently reprinted and translated book, was first published in 1686. It is "the first example in French of a learned work placed within the reach of an educated but non specialized public." - DSB, V, 59. A popular account of the systems of Ptolemy, Copernicus, and Tycho Brahe in dialogue form, the treatise "awakened general interest in astronomy and popularized the scientific system of inquiry; it also emphasized the small space occupied by man and this planet relatively to the rest of the universe. The work was ridiculed by Voltaire, though it suggested his MICROMEGAS." - The Oxford Companion to French Literature (1959), p. 278. The first of the three seventeenth-century English translations was A DISCOURSE OF THE PLURALITY OF WORLDS ... Translated into English by Sir W. D. Knight. (Dublin: Printed by Andr. Crook and Sam. Helsham, for William Norman, 1687). The first edition of the Glanvill translation (containing five dialogues) was published in 1688, the same year Aphra Behn's translation of Fontenelle's book, A DISCOVERY OF NEW WORLDS, was published in London by William Canning. The later Gardiner translation was first published in London by Bettesworth and E. Curll in 1715. This anonymous translation by a "Gentleman of the Inner-Temple" was first published in London by R. Withy in 1760. The 1760 and 1767 editions add considerable supplemental material by various writers to each of Fontenelle's six dialogues. "In all the literature of the cosmic voyage there was no book more popular than Fontenelle's CONVERSATIONS OF THE PLURALITY OF WORLDS. Translated again and again, it seemed to the British peculiarly their own book, read for at least a century both by men and by those 'ladies' of whom we have many a description, one of whom would read it aloud to others who were busily engaged in making strawberry jam. This was a book, indeed, that warranted a subtitle I once discovered in an eighteenth-century popularization of astronomy: 'Science made clear to the Meanest Capacities, even those of Women and Children.'" - Nicolson, Voyages to the Moon, pp. 58-9. Fontenelle's book "became a seminal influence on proto science fiction ... This is one of the earliest works ever written popularizing science, notably astronomy, for the layman, which it does by wittily presenting its speculations -- many about the possibility of life on other worlds -- in the form of conversations after dinner between the author and a marquise." - Clute and Nicholls (eds), The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction (1993), p. 437. See Ley, Rockets, Missiles, and Space Travel (1951), pp. 22-4 and Ley, Rockets, Missiles, and Men in Space (1968), pp. 21-2 for a good summary of the book. Bleiler, Science-Fiction: The Early Years, p. 853. See Negley, Utopian Literature: A Bibliography 368-372 (this translation not recorded). Versins, Encyclopédie de l'Utopie, des Voyages Extraordinaires, et de la Science Fiction, pp. 341-42. CBEL II, 1513. Binding worn along edges of front and rear covers, largely at corners, recently rebacked, a clean, tight, very good copy. An early, important and scarce edition of this classic work. (#147704)

Etching with engravings, signed and dated at lower center. A good impression, printed on contemporary laid paper, with margins, some expert repairs at the back, otherwise in good condition. This plate is engraved by Cochin & Jacques Philippe Le Bas, after a painting by Joseph Vernet. Vernet was commissioned by Louis XV in 1753 to paint fifteen views of the main ports of France, and given the exceptional title of "peintre des marines de sa majesté". He spent twelve years travelling around the Mediterranean, Atlantic and Channel coasts with his family and servants in tow. The country was at war with England at the time, and Louis specifically requested that the artist show off the economic activities and maritime strength of France, which Vernet did to much acclaim.         (Manuscript lunar charts with movable parts). - Two manuscript charts on lunar astronomy with mounted and movable parts of the moon's passage through the Pleiades at New Year's Eve, 1767, and another from the same hand of the partial lunar eclipse on January, 4th 1768, both as seen from Leipzig. Obviously manufactured during the observations in Leipzig, Saxony.

Saxony, 1767-68.. Black ink on recto and verso of two strong cardboards. Measurements: 23 x 22 cm (partial lunar eclipse) and 20,5 x 27 cm (moon's passage through the Pleiades). Corners minorily bumped, lightly browned in places, but all together very well preserved especially for items that include movable parts for demonstrational purposes. A very unusual set of manuscript lunar charts, obviously drawn during the celestial occurences described and precisely measured on them. Unfortunately, they are unsigned and the authorship therefore remains unclear. The design of the charts, however, talks in favour of the author having been in a position enabling him to make use of elaborate astronomical instruments, and would that most probably not be the case if he was a privateer instead of a person, who by profession was connected to a university or an observatory: The charts bear normal captions as well as some which are mirror-inverted, clearly pointing towards that they had been manufactured (and later used for presentation) by the combination of an astronomical telescope and a projection instrument. The lunar motion shown on the front side of each one of the charts could so repeatedly be demonstrated for educational purposes and at the same time be compared with the time scales on the backside, simply by placing the charts between the viewer and a mirror, with the front side of the charts facing the mirror.

Paris, Regnard, 1767.. Sextodecimo (16mo). Contemporary gilt half calf with marbled boards and title lable to spine. 328 pp., 3 ff., title with a decent contemporary ownerÂ’s stamp on verso (very difficult to read, but clearly of french origin). Minor wears to the spineÂ’s extremeties, but in fine condition. First edition, posthumously published. Very rare handbook to conchological collections of Paris, listing in alphabetical order the most important species together with their zoological descriptions as well as references in which collections corresponding specimen could be found. Pages 309-328 contain a list in two parts first of privately owned cabinets one could find in Paris and second of those to be found in the other provinces of France. – Dezallier dÂ’Argenville was an eager publisher of works on natural history and technology, most of which closely related to geology, palaeontology, and conchology. He became involved into DiderotÂ’s encyclopedical project that started around the middle of the century contributing many articles on the above mentioned fields of knowledge. At his time he was known as the owner of one of the largest conchological cabinets in private hands and considered an authority in the field.

Messiah. An Oratorio in Score as it was Originally Perform'd. Composed by Mr. Handel, to which are Added his Additional Alterations, Randall & Abell, successors to the late Mr. J. Walsh. Printed By Messrs. Randall & Abell, Successors to the Late Mr. J. Walsh in Catharine Street in the Strand-of Whom May be Had the Compleat Scores of Samson, Alexander's Feast, and Acis & Galatea.

London Randell & Abell Circa 1767 - First edition, early printing of the forte-piano and vocal score, engraved portrait frontispiece by J. Houbraken, engraved title, list of subscribers, index, 188 pages engraved throughout, plus 35 Appendix pages, very occasional light marginal finger soiling, mostly to preliminary pages, else very good, quarter calf over contemporary marbled boards, rebacked with gilt morocco lettering piece, later endpapers, all edges untrimmed, mild rubbing to extremities and bumping to corners (restored), otherwise a handsome, clean, early copy. While visiting Dublin in 1742, Handel was hungry to capitalise on his eager audience following on the success of two series of concerts he gave there, so he arranged the first performance of Messiah on April 13th. The premiere of Messiah was a triumph. The alto soloist, Susanna Cibber, was an actress who had attracted scandal in the past but legend has it that her emotional performance of 'He was despised' moved Dr Patrick Delany – the husband of one of Handel's most ardent champions - to exclaim 'Woman, for this, be all your sins forgiven'. The Dublin Journal's review proclaimed that 'the best Judges allowed it to be the most finished piece of Musick. Words are wanting to express the exquisite Delight it afforded to the admiring crouded Audience. The Sublime, the Grand, and the Tender, adapted to the most elevated, majestick and moving Words, conspired to transport and charm the ravished Heart and Ear.' ESTC T189237.         The English works of Roger Ascham, preceptor to Queen Elizabeth ... with notes and observations, and the author's life. By James Bennet

London: printed for T. Davis and J. Dodsley, n.d., 1767. First edition, second issue, 4to, pp. [2], 4, [4], xvi, 395; recent brown calf-backed marbled boards; very good and sound. John Ryland's copy, with his dated (1768) signature on the title page, and with a one-and-a-quarter page quarto manuscript account by Ryland of James Bennet tipped in (33 lines, approx. 350 words), beginning "The venerable editor of this work devoted a long life, very affectionately and successfully, to the education of youth in Hertfordshire ... Dr. Johnson furnished the Life of his Author..." Ryland (1717?-1798) married the sister of John Hawkesworth. "Ryland was acquainted with Dr. Johnson for many years, and was the last surviving friend of his early life. He belonged to the old club that met weekly in 1749 at the King's Head in Ivy Lane and was broken up about 1753, and he was one of the four surviving members that dined together in 1783. He also belonged to the Essex Head Club, which Johnson formed at the close of his life. He constantly visited the doctor in his last illness, he supplied Nichols with several of the particulars which are inserted in the article in the Gentleman's Magazine for 1784 (p. 957), and attended the funeral. Several of Dr. Johnson's letters to him are included in the correspondence edited by Dr. G. B. Hill, but he is seldom mentioned by Boswell, possibly because these letters were withheld from publication in Boswell's Life" (DNB). The dedication "To Anthony Ashley Cooper, Earl of Shaftsbury," and the "Life of Roger Ascham" were written by Samuel Johnson. "Tom Davis stated that Johnson was "in reality" the editor, and that he (Johnson) gave the work to Bennet for his advantage" (Courtney). With the 4 page list of subscribers, to whom the book was originally issued in January, 1762. "This issue is distinguished by the new half-title and undated title, and by the absence of the single leaf of 'Additional Subscribers'; in all other respects it comprises the sheets from the first issue of 1761" (Fleeman).
