Florence 1767 - This originally hand-colored engraving is from Saverio Manetti's work "Storia naturale degli Uccelli" or "A Natural History of Birds". The prints were drawn and etched by Violante Vanni and Lorenzo Lorenzi with the text penned by Saverio Manetti. The work was published in Florence, Italy between 1767 and 1776 by F. Mouck, C. Cambiagi, and Giuseppe Vanni. --- "Storia naturale degli Uccelli" was 'larger, better engraved and more vividly coloured than any previous book on birds', notable for its lively posturing of the specimens which seem to reflect 'the habits and mannerisms of contemporary Italian society' (Dance). It is "one of the half-dozen or so Great Bird Books in the collector's sense" (Fine Bird Books). Dance p.70; Nissen IVB 588; Wood p.450; Fine Bird Books p.10; Zimmer I, 241. --- Each bird engraving shows remarkable personality and detail, many of the birds often taking on an almost human personality type. Manetti drew his work predominantly from real specimens. The work was one of the largest ornithology undertakings to that point in time. --- This beautiful plate comes from "Storia naturale degli uccelli", of which Peter Dance writes "The production of its five massive folio volumes must have been one of the most remarkable publishing ventures ever undertaken in Florence. Begun in 1767, and [based on birds taken from the collection of Giovanni Gerini], it was completed ten years later. It was larger, better engraved and more vividly coloured than any previous work on birds, but these are not its only claim to fame. The attitudes of the birds themselves give this book its unique character. Strutting, parading, posturing, and occasionally flying.are birds whose real-life counterparts would surely disown them, and not without reason, for Manetti seems in these pictures to be depicting the human comedy, the habits and mannerisms of contemporary Italian society. His book may still be rated among the very greatest bird books, if only for its magnificent comicality" (S. Peter Dance, "The Art of Natural History: Animal Illustrators and their Work". London: 1978) --- The work is in excellent condition overall. There may be a few minor imperfections to be expected with age and mostly in the margins. Please review the image carefully for condition and contact us with any questions.

        Abbildung auslaendischer Materialien.

      - Berlin, [not published], 1767. Folio (37.3 x 24.3 cm). Decorative water colour title page, manuscript text within a garland of flowers and insects, and 86 water-colour plates of plants, manuscript index leaf at the end. Preserved in modern marbled clamshell box.= A beautiful original manuscript of foreign, mostly exotic, useful and medicinal plants. The fine watercolours are heightened with gouache and are numbered 1-53a, 53b-85, and inscribed with their Latin names. At the lower margin the Linnaean nomenclature is given with reference to his 'Genera Plantarum'. The index leaf lists a plate 86, Euphorbia, which is not present and presumably perished. The manuscript portrays many flowering or seed-bearing plants of medical or agricultural importance: Jamaican pepper, cashew, cacao, camphor tree, caper, cardamom, cloves, quinine bark, China root, Arabian coffee, bitter cucumber, Indian saffron, date palm, Indian fig (the tree is considered sacred in India as it often shelters a little temple underneath), dwarf ginseng, tree-of-life, indigo, nutmeg, opium, Indian pepper, black pepper, St. John's bread, Indian date, vanilla plant, poison nut - many originating from India. On one plate, the nettle, the butterfly Papilio atalanta L. and its caterpillar, which specifically occurs on this plant, are illustrated. The frontispiece shows more colourful insects including butterflies and beetles, as well as flowering plants. Andreas Friedrich Happe (1733-1802) was a well-known artist, engraver, and naturalist as well as a pharmacist. He was born in Aschersleben and died in Berlin in 1802. He published a number of books on pharmaceutical botany of which the most important is his 'Botanica pharmaceutica ' Berlin 1785 (-1806). He was also the artist for the plates of the first two volumes of Martini & Chemnitz 'Neues systematisches Conchylien-Cabinet'. However, he is better known for his botanical artwork. The Oak Spring Garden Library has a four volume 'Herbarium pictum', an impressive collection of 403 watercolours. The Hunt Botanical Library possesses a manuscript by him: 'Flora Happiana', with 471 watercolours. The Amsterdam bookseller Junk sold a manuscript of Happe in 1997: 'Insecten-Belustigung. Worinnen eine Sammlung sowohl Ausländischer als Einheimischer Tag-Vögel, Abend- und Nacht-Vögel enthalten nach dem Leben gezeichnet von Andr. Frid. Happe. Berlin 1769-1784', with a fine frontispiece (title within a garland of flowers), and 133 original watercolours. In 2008, a large collection of original watercolours by Happe - 'Conspectus Praecipuarum Plantarum ' Berlin 1790-1794, with 1146 original watercolours - was offered by the Parisian bookseller Thomas-Scheler. The Latin captions have some ink bleeding. Three plates with marginal repair. A unique and interesting collection, not recorded by any bibliographer. For similar works see: An Oak Spring Herbaria, 39; and Hunt, 659.

I doveri dello stato coniugale. Canto

Lucca: Giovanni Riccomini, 1767. 8vo (203 x 135). 32 pp. Italic type (dedication in a large roman font). Engraved title vignette (cupid with garland seated on sea creature); two woodcut pictorial initials, head- and tail-pieces with putti and arabesques. Small marginal thumbprint to title, else fine; a pretty copy. Contemporary Dutch-gilt paper of a red floral pattern on gold ground, over thick paper wrappers, marbled edges; remains of paper shelf-mark label (lower cover); upper cover slightly faded. *** Only edition of a poem on marriage, with asides on the care of infants, by a Luccan abbot and prolific author of vers de circonstance. Dedicated to Maria Luisa Boccella (Mansi), a lady of Lucca for whose own marriage Leonardi had contributed epithalamia 27 years earlier, the poem was written to honor her daughter Isabella's engagement or marriage to one Girolamo Parensi. The couple were married that year (cf. Pinto 1416). In his flowery Arcadian verses Leonardi eulogizes the duties of a wife and mother. "Dependence and love" are the new wife's first duties toward her spouse (who is, however, advised to exercise his power gently), to which will soon be added that of vigilant care of the "feeble offspring" (debil Parto). On that subject Leonardi expresses clear opinions, decrying the use of wet nurses (l'uso insalubre / d'alimentar con mercenario latte / La Prole..., p. 24) and, in a long prose note, vigorously opposing swaddling. OCLC lists a single copy in America (U. Maryland). No further copies located; not in Pinto or ICCU.

        De irritabilitatis legibus. . . .

Siena: Rossi..., 1767. 1st edition. Fontana, Felice (1730-1805). De irritabilitatis legibus . . . In : Atti dell'Acc. sci. Siena III, pp. 205-31. Whole volume, 4to. viii, 317, [1), blank; 165, [3)pp. (A2, contents, bound at end). 19 folding plates. 264 x 192 mm. Contemporary vellum, gilt spine lettering, hinges repaired. Some dampstaining & light foxing, 1 or 2 minor tears but a very good copy. From the library of Walter PAGEL (1898 - 1982), with his bibliographical note on pastedown & marker slips. 1 or 2 notes in a contemporary or 19th century hand laid in. Siena: Rossi . . . , 1767 (appendix: Bindi, 1766). FIRST EDITION. First Edition, journal issue, of the first publication of Fontana?s laws of irritability, preceding the book-form edition published in Lucca the same year. Like his mentor Albrecht Haller, who had set forth the groundbreaking theory of ?sensibility? and ?irritability? in his De partibus corporis humani sensibilibus et irritabilibus (1752), Fontana used experimental evidence to show that irritability, or muscular contractility, was an intrinsic property of muscle tissue independent of the nerves; he also discovered the existence of the physiological refractory period, i.e., the amount of time it takes for an excitable membrane to be ready for a second stimulus after returning to its resting state. He used this evidence to vigorously denounce the traditional doctrine of ?animal spirits,? which medical writers from Galen to Boerhaave had used to explain both sensation and muscular motion. The work of Fontana and other followers of Haller ?marked the onset of irreversible decline for the time-honored idea of animal spirit? (Smith et al., The Animal Spirit Doctrine and the Origins of Neurophysiology, p. 194) and introduced a new era of experimental neuromuscular physiology. Fontana published his first three laws of irritability in the present paper, which includes a preface dated 1765; it is likely that he submitted his paper to the Siena Academy of Sciences in that year. ?The first law concerned Haller?s concept of contractility as a property of muscle fiber itself, and pointed out that a contraction follows only after some stimulus. The discussion displayed insight into the underlying nature of tetanic muscular contraction. The second principle was the refractory period discovered by Fontana in heart muscle and applied to better understanding of the function of other muscles. The original third principle was a disproof of the efficacy of a theoretical entity, the ?animal spirits?? (Marchand and Hoff, p. 202). Fontana followed this paper with an expanded book-form edition in which he added thee more laws.

On the legion, its organisation, rank of officers and men, and their arms; 3. On tactics, the last chapter of this book consisting of thirty-two maxims of war; 4.

Initials and owner-stamp on inner frontboard and free endpaper. * O.F. (S. L. Tuxen). Pritzel 6536. Christensen II,63,6. Bibl. Dan. II, 190. As tudor in a noble family Fr. O. Müller spent the summers at Frederiksdal Castle, a little to the north of Copenhagen. His educational duties involved his introducing his pupil into the elements of the all-victorious naural science, with the result that his own interest was caught by the study of the living nature; from the year 1758 he began his researches, with the works of Linnaeus as his guide. Müller's second foreign journey took him through Germany, Switzerland, Italy, France and Holland, was of much greater importance to his scientific development. While in Strassburg in 1766 he published his first large botanical work "Flora Fridrichsdalina".

London: Printed for J. Millan, 1767 - Octavo in fours (160 x 100 mm). Recent mottled brown calf-backed blue paper boards, titles to red morocco label to spine. Boards very slightly bowed, top edge dust toned, 2 stubs visible at inner margin between pp. 8-9 due to printing error, with no effect on the collation; an excellent copy. With 20 hand-coloured folding plates. Second edition, first published in 1766 with 17 plates. A richly illustrated drill book which references a number of contemporary battles and Generals, most often the practical use of the manoeuvres mentioned in the Seven Years' War. "This small drillbook laid out a series of manoeuvres for the battalion, most of which were described in the 1764 regulations, but which were here performed in a fashion more sophisticated than that laid down in the regulations. Although only a well-trained British battalion could have performed them, they were an alternate and superior system by which the army's new manoeuvres could be carried out . where the 1764 Regulations relied on filing for most movements, those of the 'German Officer' were better tactically because they preserved a front by marching the line obliquely; and they were more speedily performed than was possible by filing." The publisher, John Millan, integrates with the letterpress advertisements for his other military titles, including "New Prussian field regulations for foot" and "Captain Miller's Art of Self-Defence", on the versos of the title and dedication pages.
