Marriage Indenture of Trollope's Grandparents [Barchester Towers; The Way We Live Now; Framley Parsonage; Orley Farm; Doctor Thorne; The Last Chronicle of Barset; The Warden; Domestic Manners of the Americans; Michael Armstrong, Factory Boy; The Vicar of

Herefordshire, England, 1767. First edition. None. Fine. An important Trollope Family Marriage Indenture: "Settlement made on the Marriage of Mr. Anthony Trollope & Miss Penelope Meetkerke 2nd Novr. 1767". A three page document handwritten in ink on vellum. The document sets forth a tripartite agreement respecting financial contributions to the marriage and is signed by Sir Thomas and Anthony Trollope on the Groom's side, Adolphus and Penelope Meetkerke on the Bride's side , and, as executors, by Thomas Middleton Trollope, William Trollope, Ralph Freeman, and Charles Meetkerke. The couple (Reverend Anthony Trollope and Penelope Trollope (Meetkerke) had four children born to their marriage, the eldest being Anthony Trollope, the failed barrister, failed farmer, failed entrepreneur, and the husband to the resourceful and successful novelist Frances Trollope. The latter couple were, of course, parents to the famed Victorian Era novelist Anthony Trollope. [The family had harbored seemingly reasonable hopes that it would benefit financially from the connection to Penelope Meetkerke Trollope's brother (Adolphus Meetkerke), but such hopes were not realized.] The Indenture, housed in a modern cloth box with leather label, is in Fine condition and a piece of history beautiful to behold. A unique and important document and part of a defining event in the history of a famed literary family. A collection-distinguishing item for the Trollope collector.

Piatti in cartone azzurro. Frontespizi in rosso e in nero con piccoli fregi. Bellissimo esemplare. "It was so impartial that it pleased no one, not even Melanchthon" (Encyclopaedia Britannica, 1911 Edition). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Traité d'Optique. Traduit de l'Anglais et considérablement augmenté.

Brest-Paris, chez Romain Malassis-chez Durand, 1767. 1767 In-4° (265x195mm), pp. XIII, (3), 759, (3), bella legatura coeva p. vitello marezzato con fregi floreali e vegetali, riquadri di filetti e titolo in oro su tassello in marocchino rosso su dorso a 5 nervi. Tagli rossi e sguardie marmorizzate policrome. Fregio floreale al frontespizio. Testatine, iniziali e cul-de-lampe ornati e arabescati in rame.

Paris, Briasson, 1767. 3 volumes. 8vo (195 x 130mm). pp. xxxv, (1), 571; vi, 656; vi, 290, (6), 286, (1), with 30 (many folded) engraved plates. Contemporary mottled calf, spines gilt in compartments, maroon title-labels, minor restoration to top and bottom of spines of two volumes, an attractive set. Don Pedro Francisco Davila (1713-85) was a Peruvian gentleman, who lived in Paris were he maintained a collection of natural history objects and works of art. "Several years later Davila had to return to Peru for family reasons and decided to sell his collections. He published a lavish, illustrated catalogue in three volumes, the first being chiefly devoted to shells, in the compilation of which he was assisted by the Abbé de Gua de Malves and J.B.L. Romé de l'Isle (who was largerly responsible for the second volume, which dealt with minerals). The Linnaean system is mentioned only in connection with the minerals. Surprisingly, Adanson, who clearly despised dilettante collectors was well acquainted with Davila's collections and contributed a flattering 'approval' to the first volume, expressing his regret that they were to be dismembered and urging some 'sovereign' to buy them in their entirety. In 1767 they were sold piecemeal, 1,007 shell items realizing 26,933 francs ..." (Dance pp. 60-61). 22 of the plates depict shells. The second volume by Jean Romé de l'Isle describes the mineral collection of Davila. "Of interest to the gemologist in this volume are Davila's collections of marbles, flints, jaspers, agates, other chalcedonic varieties of quartz, opals, jades, and precious stones ... Elsewhere are listed dendritic agates ... and amber" (Sinkankas 1594). Nissen ZBI, 1050; See also Wilson, The History of Mineral Collecting, p. 50.

Otomí is one of the principal languages spoken in Central Mexico, and this work, more than any other, standardized its orthography; it is also the classic Otomí grammar and dictionary, and is by a man some authorities believe to have been himself an Otomí Indian, or at least of Otomí heritage. It was written during the mid-18th-century renaissance of linguistic study of the languages of Mexico, and Palau considers it "muy rara." (It is much rarer on the market, in our experience, than similarly important works in Nahuatl.)Both the engraved frontispiece and the engraved errata leaf are signed by the engraver Jose Francisco Gomez; the former, often, is not present but it is => here in very good state.Provenance: Red leather bookplate stamped in gold of Estelle Doheny on front pastedown.

I doveri dello stato coniugale. Canto

Giovanni Riccomini Lucca: Giovanni Riccomini, 1767. 8vo (203 x 135). 32 pp. Italic type (dedication in a large roman font). Engraved title vignette (cupid with garland seated on sea creature); two woodcut pictorial initials, head- and tail-pieces with putti and arabesques. Small marginal thumbprint to title, else fine; a pretty copy. Contemporary Dutch-gilt paper of a red floral pattern on gold ground, over thick paper wrappers, marbled edges; remains of paper shelf-mark label (lower cover); upper cover slightly faded. *** Only edition of a poem on marriage, with asides on the care of infants, by a Luccan abbot and prolific author of vers de circonstance. Dedicated to Maria Luisa Boccella (Mansi), a lady of Lucca for whose own marriage Leonardi had contributed epithalamia 27 years earlier, the poem was written to honor her daughter Isabella's engagement or marriage to one Girolamo Parensi. The couple were married that year (cf. Pinto 1416). In his flowery Arcadian verses Leonardi eulogizes the duties of a wife and mother. "Dependence and love" are the new wife's first duties toward her spouse (who is, however, advised to exercise his power gently), to which will soon be added that of vigilant care of the "feeble offspring" (debil Parto). On that subject Leonardi expresses clear opinions, decrying the use of wet nurses (l'uso insalubre / d'alimentar con mercenario latte / La Prole..., p. 24) and, in a long prose note, vigorously opposing swaddling. OCLC lists a single copy in America (U. Maryland). No further copies located; not in Pinto or ICCU.

Senare marmorerat lila pappband, något blekt rygg med röd titeletikett. Ur Ericsbergs bibliotek. Warmholtz 5956, not resp. 5721.

Title page torn and repaired with archival tissue. 4 leaves of the introduction (concerning reading Gaelic) are missing, but the entire text of the New Testament is present. Pages browned with staining (mostly light) throughout, some closed tears and marginal loss. Fore edges and endpapers have darkened. Though an imperfect copy, this is an interesting example which was clearly much read and still possesses its title page and all the New Testament text. Scarce collector's item. D&M 4080

Delle Corde ovvero Fibre Elastiche Schediasmi Fisico-Matematici

Stamperia di San Tommaso d'Aquino Bologna: Stamperia di San Tommaso d'Aquino. 1767. Stiff early paper wrappers. 1f. (title printed in red and black), xxiv, 246, [ii] pp. + 7 folding engraved plates of diagrams and 1 folding plate between pp. 16-17. Occasional woodcut and engraved head- and tailpieces. A fine, uncut and unopened copy. Wrappers slightly worn and stained. . First Edition. Rare. Regazzi 2757. Not in Cortot, Wolffheim, Hirsch or Gregory Bartlett. RISM BVI p. 701 (no copies recorded in North America). Riccati was an Italian mathematician, music theorist, physicist and architect, the first to study the laws of a vibrating membrane. "The text of this work is divided into eight 'Schediasmi' and five dissertations. The first are devoted to the proportion between the distension of the cord and the force that it produces, compression of air, the proportion between the force applied to the middle of a stretched cord and the various effects, the vibration of a sonorous cord, the vibration of an aerial cord, the proportions of the cord of a musical instrument, the factors governing the frequency of the vibration generated by a natural or artificial instrument, and the propagation of sound in the air..." "Of the five dissertations at the end, the first two discuss the propagation of sound by line and radius from a central source, the first making the assumption that the vibration will remain constant throughout the range and the second assuming that the vibration will decrease as the distance from the source becomes greater. The third dissertation concerns the propagation of sound in spherical sectors. In the fourth dissertation, Riccati presents Euler's formula from his work on the nature of fire, on the means of determining the velocity with which sound is propagated in the air..." "The fifth, and final, dissertation is concerned with the hypothesis proposed by Frisi that the vibration is propagated through the air in a wave, the air molecules being set in motion by those already activated; this is in contrast to the notion that all of the air is set in motion simultaneously by the initial sound."       Bln., Voss, 1767. Two nice, cont., uniform full calf w. five raised bands on backs, coloured title- and tome-labels and richly gilt backs. Traces of use, especially to the bands. Some gilding and part of title-label on vol. one worn off. Internally a bit of soiling, but a good copy on good paper. Old owner's name on t-p. (M. Harboe). Woodcut title-pages and vignettes.. First edition of Lessing's first collection of "Lustspiele", containing the first printing of "Minna von Barnhelm".Lessing (1729-1781) is the most important literary writer of the Age of German Enlightenment; with him this period is fulfilled as well as overcome."Minna von Barnhelm" is one of Lessing's most important and successfull works and is considered one of the absolute best of his plays. "Es war die erste deutsche Dramatische Dichtung, welche nicht gemacht, sondern erlebt war." (Hettner, Geschichte der deutschen Literatur im 18. Jahrh., II: 310). Lessing himself wrote in a letter that should "Minna of Barnhelm" not turn out to be the very best of his plays, he would be very disappointed, and never have anything to do with the theatre again. " "Minna von Barnhelm" ist unbedingt die vollendeste dichterische Leistung Lessings." (Hettner, II: 310). Goethe also considered this work a masterpiece; he found it the most sincere thing to have come out of the Seven Years War and a work of immense importance and impact. With this work we find the genres of drama and comedy fulfilled."Nach ein paar Wanderjahren kehrte er nach Berlin zurück, wo 1766 un 1767 zwei seiner Meisterwerke erschienen: der "Laokoon" und das Lustspiel "Minna von Barnhelm". (Bücher die die Welt verändern, # 213). See PMM 213.Has belonged to Th.E. Petersen and M. Harboe

        De irritabilitatis legibus

Rossi... Siena: Rossi..., 1767. 1st edition. No Dust Jacket. Fontana, Felice (1730-1805). De irritabilitatis legibus . . . In : Atti dell'Acc. sci. Siena III, pp. 205-31. Whole volume, 4to. viii, 317, [1), blank; 165, [3)pp. (A2, contents, bound at end). 19 folding plates. 264 x 192 mm. Contemporary vellum, gilt spine lettering, hinges repaired. Some dampstaining & light foxing, 1 or 2 minor tears but a very good copy. From the library of Walter PAGEL (1898 - 1982), with his bibliographical note on pastedown & marker slips. 1 or 2 notes in a contemporary or 19th century hand laid in. Siena: Rossi . . . , 1767 (appendix: Bindi, 1766). FIRST EDITION. Discovery and experimental demonstration of the refractory period. "Formulated after the model of Newton's principles in physics, the laws of Fontana on muscular irritability were an important but neglected contribution to the subject of muscular contractility. The first law concerned Haller's concept of contractility as a property of muscle fiber itself, and pointed out that a contraction follows only after some stimulus. The discussion displayed insight into the underlying nature of tetanic muscular contraction. The second principle was the refractory period discovered by Fontana in heart muscle and applied to better understanding of the function of other muscles. The original third principle was a disproof of the efficacy of a theoretical entity, the 'animal spirits' . . . In his fourth law, Fontana pointed out the loss of contractility which results from stretching or compressing a muscle, and certain medical applications of this principle. The fifth law was concerned with problems arising from atrophy of disuse. This chapter included a discussion of the behavior of muscles after a relatively brief rest and a progressive shortening related to the 'treppe' effect observed on the kymograph record" (Marchand & Hoff, "Fontana's laws of irritability," J. hist. med. X [1955) 202; also 197 - 206, 302 -26, 399 -420 with trans. & bibliog.). The journal publication of The laws of irritability is the original edition. A book-form edition, published ai Lucca followed it. Neither the journal nor book-form edition is found in Waller, Osler, Cushing, Wellcome or Heirs of Hippocrates. Fontana's paper was apparently unknown to Fulton (Muscular contraction, 1926). Blake 150. The appendix to this volume of the Atti contains anatomical studies by Pietro TABARRANI (1702-80), the teacher of Paolo MASCAGNI. These are illustrated with 10 folding plates. Shortly after this publication Mascagni must have begun his studies at Siena. In 1774 he succeeded to his teacher Tabarrani's chair. Choulant/Frank 315. Hirsch. From the library of the historian of Renaissance medicine and biology, Walter Pagel (see Garrison-Morton 57, 3240, 3242), who has made notes about both these texts in his copy.
