BEATUS OF VALCAVADO (BEATO DE VALCAVADO) (Fine Facsimile Illuminated Edition of the 10th c. )

Madrid: Testimonio. New. Hardcover. This Beatus belongs to a family of Beatus Commentaries of which the other members are the Thompson Beatus (New York) and the Seo de Urgel copy. The distinguishing features of this group are the beauty of their calligraphy and the excellence of their miniatures. Today the Valladolid University Beatus is the jewel of the Library of Santa Cruz College (founded in the 15th century) , part of the University, to which it came from St Ambrose College after the expulsion of the Jesuits in 1767. The manuscript today comprises 230 folios measuring 355 x 245 mm. , but it was originally larger, before the margins of the folios were trimmed by at least 10 mm. It is written in perfect, round Visigothic script, similar to that seen in other codices from the Kingdom of León from the same period. 14 folios have disappeared, and it is probable that the five folios with genealogies in Case 14-2 in the National Library in Madrid belong to it. The book was compiled at the direction of Abbot Sempronius, by Oveco, a monk from the Monastery of Santa Maria in Valcavado, on the banks of the Carrión river, slightly to the north of Saldaña. It was executed very quickly, the work lasting 92 days (from 8 June to 8 September 970) , at a rate of 5 pages and a half per day, which constitutes a record for the Middle Ages. In addition to the many decorated initial letters, the copy contains 97 miniatures, some on two pages and a large number on whole pages, most of them well preserved. The technique and colours are similar to those of the other manuscripts in the family and firmly in the style of the great León school founded by Magius and developed by other scribes such as Senior and Emeterius. A particular characteristic of this school is the division of miniatures into a series of of bands of different colours, in an attempt at perspective. St Jerome's Commentary on the Book of Daniel, which contains an outstanding miniature of Belshazzar's Feast, exhibits a different pictorial technique. Companion volume written by José Antonio Fernández Flórez, Mauricio Herrero Jiménez, José Manuel Ruiz Asencio, Clementina Julia Ara Gil, Pilar Rodríguez Marín, Marta Herreo de la Fuente. .

1767, Latin and French text, edited by Nicolai Schwebelii. 4to, 255 x 195 mm, 10 x 7¾ inches, in 2 parts with separate register and pagination, the second part with its own title page containing the French translation (by C. G. Bourdon de Sigrais). Engraved frontispiece, engraved vignette to each title page, engraved pictorial headpiece to each of the 5 books, 2 folding plates (1 placed in the French section), pages (28), 176, (12); xviii, 90. We could only find 2 copies with collations,1 on an Italian site, ICCU and 1 complete digitised copy on ECHO, (European Cultural Heritage Online). Our copy collates exactly to these, apart from 1 page, the Contents page which seems to be misplaced in our copy and the ECHO copy. Bound in modern quarter morocco over marbled sides, all edges red, new marbled endpapers. Occasional light foxing, second title page age browned, some pale age-browning and light foxing throughout, small pale damp stain to a few upper margins, name of Dr Georg Wolfgang Augustin Fikenscher with date of 1797 on title page, in old ink, a German academic from Bayreuth, binding tight and firm. A very good copy. Vegetius a Roman writer about whom very little is known wrote his classic work originally called Epitoma Rei Militaris in the fifth century. The material, on military matters, is chiefly borrowed from earlier authorities and Vegetius is the only extant source for much that his work contains. It was first published in Utrecht in 1475 and was frequently reprinted and translated into modern languages. The work is divided into 5 books: 1. On the levying and training of recruits; 2. On the legion, its organisation, rank of officers and men, and their arms; 3. On tactics; the last chapter of this book consisting of thirty-two maxims of war; 4. On fortification and the attack and defence of places; on machines of war; 5. On the navy. MORE IMAGES ATTACHED TO TH IS LISTING.

An Essay on the History of Civil Society

Edinburgh: for A. Millar & T. Cadell in London; and A. Kincaid & J. Bell in Edinburgh,, 1767. Quarto. Contemporary tan calf sprinkled red and black, spine in compartments with raised bands, double gilt rules and a red morocco label, red sprinkled edges. Splitting to joints and rubbing to ends and corners, some restoration, minor scratches and marks to covers, leaves lightly cockled with a few faint spots; a very good copy overall. First edition of Ferguson's masterpiece, a key text of the Scottish Enlightenment. "The Essay touched a chord in its British readers because it offered a detailed, colourful, non-deterministic historical account of the way nations advance morally and materially towards the state of commerce, refinement, and liberty associated with eighteenth-century Britain" (ODNB). Ferguson made a distinctly modern economic analysis of morality, arguing that the danger was not luxury, but political laziness, or a reluctance to fulfil the duties of citizenship. Identifiably Scottish without being overtly so, Ferguson followed Montesquieu by acknowledging a great variety of factors, climatic and geographic, as well as cultural and moral, affecting the rise and fortunes of polities in Europe and beyond. "Of special significance was the Essay's impact on the early attempts at creating the disciplines of social sciences by Ferguson's contemporaries at the University of Göttingen. They were impressed by his comparative attitude to societies ancient and modern, and by his attack on Rousseau's concept of the state of nature. Ferguson's approach inspired a comparative ethnography that went beyond the traditional dichotomy between 'primitive' and 'civilized', and tried to map the varieties of social mores without grading them on a strict ladder of historical progress" (op. cit). "Ferguson is today remembered for his Essay … he was what we would now call an intellectual historian, tracing the gradual rise of the human mind from barbarism to political and social refinement … Debates between Reid, Dugald Stewart, Hume, Adam Smith, Lord Kames and Ferguson himself reveal Scottish philosophy in general to be important sociologically … His discussions of politics, economics, history, aesthetics, literature and ethnology were the synthesis of the thought of his time" (Encyclopedia of Philosophy III, p. 187). This copy, attesting to Ferguson's continental influence, is from the Château Dampierre library (with the bookplate) of the Ducs de Luynes, which was one of the most important private libraries in France. It was probably bought into the Dampierre library by the 6th Duc de Luynes (1748–1807), who was close to the philosophes and physiocrats, and stocked the library with Enlightenment texts by the likes of Montesquieu, Adam Smith and Rousseau.

Zurich: Burgklischer Truckerey. 1767. Thick octavo. Full 18th century dark brown calf. [viii], 880, [viii] pp. With a fine frontispiece engraving depicting a female figure playing the organ with another seated beside her singing from an open book of music, her words rising to the Heavens.& & Binding worn; spine defective; some ownership markings and remnants of early labels to pastedowns. Slightly soiled and worn; some mispagination. A very good copy overall. . Bachofen was a Swiss composer and music pedagogue. His "significance in the history of Swiss music lies primarily in the exceptional popularity of some of his works. His music was criticized, even by his contemporaries, for deficiencies of construction, harmonic language and melodic development; but his most important collection of sacred songs, Musicalisches Hallelujah, appeared in no less than 11 editions between 1727 and 1803, and became one of the favourite songbooks for popular music-making in the home... As the preface... makes clear, Bachofen's works were specifically intended for domestic use. He broke away from the tradition of four-part writing (in the manner of Goudimel's psalms), and most of his settings are in three voices. The continuo part, presumably to be played on the home organ, also constitutes the vocal bass, and there are two soprano parts which frequently cross. Solo songs with organ are inserted to fill gaps on the printed pages resulting from publication in separate parts, with each three-part song beginning a new page." Peter Ross in Grove online

Franç. de Bure le jeune. liv, [2], 618 pp.; 2 p.l., 400 pp. Two vols. in one. Thick 4to, cont. speckled boards, excellently rebacked in antique calf, gilt, reusing the two red morocco lettering pieces on spine. Paris: G.F. de Bure, 1767. A very rare large paper copy of the extremely uncommon auction catalogue of the first of three sales of duplicates from the library of the duc de la Vallière, who formed by the time of his death in 1780 the most important collection of books of the 18th century. La Vallière, born rich and richer still through several inheritances, began buying in a serious way at the sale of the comte d'Hoym in 1738. For more than forty years, he acquired MSS., books, and entire collections on an enormous scale, buying at every major sale in France (and even in London at the Askew sale in 1775). We know that in one single year -- 1774 -- La Valliêre bought more than 6000 books. Such a pace of acquisition caused the Duc to have many duplicates and triplicates. This catalogue, which contains 5633 lots, contains duplicate books and MSS. (!). We see that La Valliêre was not above selling unique items: lots 5566-5633 are all precious early French MSS. A fine copy, priced throughout in a contemporary hand. ❧ Guigard, II, pp. 294-95. Peignot, p. 128. Pollard & Ehrman, pp. 247 & 341 & no. 347. Taylor, Book Catalogues, p. 248-49. .

Vol. 1 with E5 printed black on both sides; Vol. 3 first state with marbled leaf at L4; mixed state of Vol. 4, lacking pgs. 147-155, but showing Chapt. XXIII; first state of Vol. 5; first state of Vol. 6 with L2r intentionally blank; first state of Vol. 7 with errata on verso of title page; second state of Vol. 8 with "inflamgatory" on p. 34 spelled correctly; first state of Vol. 9. With frontis in vol. 1, lacking from vol. 3, plate for vol. 4 present; half-titles in volumes 5, 6, & 9, but lacking from vol. 4; and volumes 5, 7 & 9 signed by Sterne to prevent piracy. Needless to say, complicated books bibliographically, with exceptionally small print runs for the first two volumes and generally offered in mixed editions, as here. & & These volumes are in uniform contemporary calf-bindings, with minor repairs to the spines. Internal contents are clean and honest. With the armorial bookplates of John Ludford Esq. in three of the volumes. Sterne's comic masterpiece, making generous use of other writer's work, but creating an effect all its own. Seen as a forerunner to numerous modern literary movements due to the author's creative use of a "stream-of-consciousness" first person narrator. As fresh and vivacious today as it was 250 years ago. "[Sterne] remains, as the author of Tristram Shandy, a delineator of the comedy of human life before whom only three or four humorous writers, in any tongue or of any age, can justly claim precedence." Dictionary of National Biography XVIII p. 1106.

Contemporary mottled sheep, red morocco label, raised bands, spine gilt in compartments with floral and foliate tools, red edge-stain, green silk page-marker. Housed in a black quarter morocco solander box made by The Chelsea Bindery. 4 folding coloured plates and one uncoloured. Short marginal tear to the uncoloured plate, no loss, light browning, page numbering slightly cropped in places, a little rubbed at the extremities, headcap chipped, joints slightly cracked, but overall very good indeed. A handsome and highly interesting manuscript. The first published edition was issued by Arckstée & Merkus in Amsterdam in 1771, credited to "un Officier du Corps," the author previously identified by Barbier as Edme-Jean-Antoine Du Puget. Du Puget (1742-1802) was a member of an old aristocratic family from Bresse and was introduced to the corps by his uncle Joseph-Etienne Dupuget, who was an officer. He distinguished himself in the war in Corsica receiving the Croix de Saint-Louis and being advanced to the rank of marechal de camp. Shortly afterwards he was made inspector-general of the forces in America, and spent two years overseas, returning to become assistant instructor to the dauphin, for which services he was made a count. On the death of his pupil he retired to Amiens occupying himself with "ses paisibles études" (Michaud) until arrested and imprisoned during the Revolution. On his release he withdrew with his family to his estate at d'Hargicourt, but driven by his thirst for knowledge returned to Paris to study at the School of Mining. He died there aged 60. This study was evidently very well thought of, circulating in manuscript before it was finally published. There are copies in the Library of the Society of the Cincinnati and at Nantes, all of which seem to vary slightly, both from the printed text and from each other. The published form lacks the dissertation on the prerogative of officers in the placing of batteries, pp.125-138, also his comments of siege craft at pp. 152-153 and the entire appendix "Memoire sur la Machine", pp.288-294 and accompanying plate. A comparison with the Nantes manuscript, which is dated 1760, shows that it lacks the "Memoire … sur la Construction des Batteries", the appendix is registered as a separate item, and the three plates are printed and uncoloured. Perhaps a traditionalist in some of his views, he defends the position of artillery against Folard's innovations, but is progressive in others, calling for a broad-based education for artillerymen, "bien d'autres etudes que celle de la guerre, et de la mechanique. On ne peut esperer d'y parvenir avec distinction, si l'on ne joint a ces premieres sciences, la phisique; les plus interessantes parties de la chimie, la geographie, l'art de fortifier, auant aux profiles et la direction des feux; l'architecture civile; et l'hydrostatique et l'hydraulique, en tout ce qui peut concerner les operation de la guerre... pour le dire en peu de mots, la vie d'un bon officiers de Corps Royale, est une etude perpetuelle." Like his own, the life of an artillery officer should be one of perpetual study.

There is some crinkling to page edges particularly towards the end of the book and spotting and marking but it is remarkably clean for an old cookery book. The outside lower edges of pages from 273 to 283 are browned and fragile and there is some loss on 282 and 283 which does not affect the text. Only one page of the index is present and the lower outside edge of that is missing slightly affecting some text.

Paris: Chez Merlin, 1767. 8vo (19.9 cm, 7.8"). [4], x, 340, [6] pp.; 4 plts. First edition, early state, featuring the frontispiece and three copper-engraved plates designed by Gravelot. Quickly translated into numerous languages following its initial publication, Marmontel's controversial philosophical novel was written in great part in the hope that its retelling of the story of Gen. Flavius Beisarius of the Byzantine Empire would convince Louis XV to become, himself, the longed-for Philosopher-King. Chapter 15, however, in which Marmontel advocates freedom of opinion and religious tolerance, inspired extensive commentary by Voltaire and others and brought on condemnation by both the Sorbonne and the Archbishop of Paris — though it may ultimately have helped the Huguenot cause. Merlin also printed a duodecimo edition in 1767; in the present edition, "Fragmens de philosophie morale" is found on pp. 273–340, followed by the Addition and Approbation. Provenance: Front pastedown with large, round, gilt-stamped armorial leather bookplate of notable 19th-century book collector Edward Hailcrone; smaller, round, cream-colored leather gilt-stamped “I.T.” bookplate with motto “Inter folia fructus” of 19th-century bookseller and bookcollector James Toovey; and paper bookplate of Sir Montague Shearman. Binding: Contemporary crimson morocco, covers framed in gilt triple fillets; spine gilt extra with gilt-stamped leather labels, board edges and turn-ins with gilt rolls. This volume (complete in itself) seems at one time to have been part of a set of Marmontel's works, and bears an (unnumbered) spine label reading "Oeuvres de Marmontel. Binding as above, with edges, extremities, and joints showing minor rubbing. Front pastedown with bookplates as above; front free endpaper with affixed slip of early cataloguing; rear pastedown with small chip out of paper. Light spots of foxing, slightly heavier around plates. All edges gilt.

        La Perruche Banks, pl. 50

A beautifully detailed  hand colored copperplate engraving by Jacques Barraband (1767-1809) From Histoire Naturelle des Perroquets Paris: 1801-5. Overall this print measures 12"x18". Jacques Barraband?s (1767-1809) engravings of birds are masterpieces of French ornithological illustration. These stunning portraits were done for the distinguished ornithologist Francois Levaillant, who commissioned the artist to illustrate his landmark works on African ornithology, including the lavish and striking Histoire Naturelle des Perroquets. Images of African birds were popular in early 19th-century France both for their exoticism and for the interest in Africa that Napoleon?s campaigns were generating. The collaboration of Levaillant and Barraband represented a departure from previous ornithological texts in its emphasis on beauty and luxury, with sumptuously colored and flawlessly rendered birds. The project was a massive undertaking, which required over 300 finished watercolors. Apart from their undoubted beauty, Barraband?s engravings display a scientific accuracy that few ornithological artists have matched since. The meticulous hand-colored engravings in Levaillant?s publications were unmatched for the delicate modulations of tone and color, fine lines and perfect draftsmanship, making them exceptional in their richness and tonal variation. Each feather is described by dozens of parallel lines, providing remarkable detail and naturalistically textured color. Some of the prints are embellished with touches of gold leaf on the feathers of thecheeks and shoulders of the birds, emphasizing the preciousness of the plates and reproducing the iridescence of the birds? feathers. The present selection of images represents an opportunity to acquire spectacular engraving by a foremost 19th-century natural history artist. We will not be knowingly undersold on this work of art..Overall this print is in very good condition with some light foxing/staining and eveidence of prevoius binding in margins.

Frontespizi in rosso e in nero con piccoli fregi. Bellissimo esemplare. "It was so impartial that it pleased no one, not even Melanchthon" (Encyclopaedia Britannica, 1911 Edition).

Paris, Briasson, 1767. 3 volumes. 8vo (195 x 130mm). pp. xxxv, (1), 571; vi, 656; vi, 290, (6), 286, (1), with 30 (many folded) engraved plates. Contemporary mottled calf, spines gilt in compartments, maroon title-labels, minor restoration to top and bottom of spines of two volumes, an attractive set. Don Pedro Francisco Davila (1713-85) was a Peruvian gentleman, who lived in Paris were he maintained a collection of natural history objects and works of art. "Several years later Davila had to return to Peru for family reasons and decided to sell his collections. He published a lavish, illustrated catalogue in three volumes, the first being chiefly devoted to shells, in the compilation of which he was assisted by the Abbé de Gua de Malves and J.B.L. Romé de l'Isle (who was largerly responsible for the second volume, which dealt with minerals). The Linnaean system is mentioned only in connection with the minerals. Surprisingly, Adanson, who clearly despised dilettante collectors was well acquainted with Davila's collections and contributed a flattering 'approval' to the first volume, expressing his regret that they were to be dismembered and urging some 'sovereign' to buy them in their entirety. In 1767 they were sold piecemeal, 1,007 shell items realizing 26,933 francs ..." (Dance pp. 60-61). 22 of the plates depict shells. The second volume by Jean Romé de l'Isle describes the mineral collection of Davila. "Of interest to the gemologist in this volume are Davila's collections of marbles, flints, jaspers, agates, other chalcedonic varieties of quartz, opals, jades, and precious stones ... Elsewhere are listed dendritic agates ... and amber" (Sinkankas 1594). Nissen ZBI, 1050; See also Wilson, The History of Mineral Collecting, p. 50.
