A Coppet, s.d. A long erroneous westward extension for Alaska also indicates the lack of reliable geographical knowledge. Indeed, this section of northern America is almost entirely conjectural and erroneous. Various explorer tracks with dates seen in the oceans (but prior to Cook). A fascinating map. Beautiful and very uncommon/ rare old engraved map with nice original hand color heightened in outline. A beautiful decorative title cartouche adds to the visual appeal of the map. On either side is original letter-press descriptive text relating to the geographical area depicted. This text has been separately printed and affixed on either side prior to issue by the publisher. Map remains well preserved, but with some light old spotting or stains. Shows minor light age wear or surface spotting/ soiling which is visible within the scan, nice eye appeal to the map. Original center fold line as issued. Sheet measures c. 13 1/8" H x 19 5/8" W. Printed area measures c. 9 1/8" H x 9" W Tooleys Dictionary of Mapmakers, v. 1, p. 191[R10512-R2507]

SMITH, Charles]
London: printed for the author and sold by J. Brotherton, 1766. 8vo., iv + 235 + (1)pp., the first two leaves a little soiled, well bound recently in good quarter calf and marbled boards. A very good crisp copy. A much-quoted work, which remains useful for its lists of relevant statutes on the subject as well as for its numerous tables of prices, exports, imports, &c. 'These tracts are by far the best of the earlier works on the corn trade. They embody much valuable information respecting the corn laws of England, and other countries, especially France; the prices, imports, and exports of corn; the sums paid in bounties on exportation; the numbers of the people using different sorts of corn, and the quantity used by each, &c. The first tract was published in 1758, and the second in 1759.' [McCulloch p.68]. Adam Smith describes Charles Smith in the Wealth of Nations> as 'the ingenious and well-informed author'. The author, a mill owner in Croydon (Surrey), brought public attention to bear on the price/availability issues in the corn market and he here demystifies the trading practices of the corn dealers.
