Smollett, Tobias M.
London: R. Baldwin, 1766. Book. 8vo-over 7¾"-9¾" tall. One of the great travelogues of the 18th century, Smollett was a keen observer of local customs and an interesting writer. Both volumes are bound in full calf with raised bands. There is a paper sticker at the head of the spine of volume 1 with the number 91 printed on it. I assume that this was in someone's private library and the sticker was used to identify this set. This is the second edtion published in the same year as the first edition. Corners are bumped and there is mild foxing to some of the pages. There is a previous owner's signature on the title page of each volume. It is highly stylized and appears to be 18th or early 19th century. I bought this set in Sweden in 1986 and a previous owner has neatly penned in some swedish words over the English ones. It is actually quite charming. This is a handsome set and in very collectable condition. Very Good. No Jacket. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Contemporary cat's paw calf. xxxii, 540 pages, 1 chiaroscuro plate; xvi, 388 pages, 5 chiaroscuro progressive plates; iv, 124 pages. First edition. Papillon's work is considered to be the first practical treatise on wood engraving, chiaroscuro printing, and wallpaper. It is most famous for its progressive suite of five plates showing the making of a chiaroscuro print. Papillon was wood engraver to the Imprimerie Royale, and considered to be the finest engraver of his day. Aside from the plates, these volumes contain one hundred thirty-six head and tail pieces and two hundred and fifty-seven other wood marks in the text.
[Click Below for Full Description]

Cambridge: Joseph Bentham, 1766. A unique issue of the Book of Common Prayer (cf. Griffiths, Book of Common Prayer which shows only 1764 and 1765 versions). As is typical on editions printed before 1852, the thanksgiving for deliverance from the Gunpowder Plot and the Restoration of Charles II is present. The fifty-five engravings are chiefly from the gospels (the Engraving on the Parable of the Good Samaritan lacks 25% of its image). This copy notes the previous owner as "Martha Mirriam Home, Her Book, 1799". She married Thomas Beacall in Shropshire in 1805. In his will read in 1846 he was noted as a "Gentleman of Shrewsbury, Shropshire." In the back is pasted in a note that the book now belonged to their daughter Mary Leake who was born in 1811. While the book was trimmed for the fine leather binding, no text appears to be lacking. Also the Psalms in meter are bound in the back with a separate title page (Cambridge, 1758).

Wilson, Alexander; Ord, George
Philadelphia, PA: Bradford & Inskeep, Laval & Bradford. Very Good. 0. Hardcover. Seventy-six beautiful hand-colored plates illustrate Alexander Wilson's attempt to comprehensively catalogue the birds of the United States. Born in Scotland in 1766,Wilson apprenticed as a weaver before emigrating to the United States in 1794, where he worked a variety of jobs before settling in teaching. By 1803 Wilson, inspired by his new hobby of drawing and his associations with naturalist William Bartram, expressed interest in compiling what would become American Ornithology. In the remaining decade of his life, he traveled extensively throughout the eastern U.S., studying and sketching as well as giving sales pitches for his intended 9-volume set. He is considered the first scientific American ornithologist; John James Audobon expressly stated his intent to surpass Wilson's work. Wilson died in 1813; volumes 8 and 9 were published by his friend and supporter, naturalist George Ord. The last volume contains the remaining four plates and Ord's biography of Wilson. Collated and complete; all plates are present. Mixture of first (Vols. 1-6) and later printings (Vols. 7-9). Dates range from 1808 - 1825.Three-quarter red leather over marbled paper boards. Boards are rubbed on edges, corners bumped. Pages quite clean except for some occasional spotting and offsetting near plates. Plates have light to moderate foxing, tissue guards show offsetting from plates. Gilt on spines rubbed, some nicks and dents. Each volume has a small bookplate from a previous owner on the fron … [Click Below for Full Description]
