Vienna: Joannis Thomae nob. de Trattnern, 1766. Vienna:: Joannis Thomae nob. de Trattnern, 1766., 1766. 4to. [viii], 150 pp. 13 folding engraved plates. Original [Viennese?] brown elaborately blind-stamped calf, all edges gilt; extremities worn. Final two blanks with manuscript notes, probably attributable to Keller. Signature of Georg Joseph Keller of Wurzburg, his manuscript notes at rear. Good. Second edition, translated from the French. "Elementary lessons in optics (1750), was a short but very popular textbook that was reprinted ten times, sometimes in other languages, until 1810, and is a fairly uncomplicated treatment of optics as then known, especially as applied to lenses, mirrors, eye glasses, telescopes and microscopes. Once again La Caille revealed himself to be a good Newtonian, even if classical corpuscles are no longer the whole story today. / 'Light is composed of a prodigious quantity of particles of matter or of corpuscles distinguished from each other, of infinitely small size, very elastic but with an extreme velocity so that when they arrive at the organ of our sight they hit with a force proportional to the density of corpuscles, which in virtue of the intimate union of our body with our soul, occasions in our spirit different ideas on the presence of objects from where the corpuscles or luminous atoms departed." – I.S. Glass, Nicolas-Louis De La Caille, Astronomer and Geodesist. / "The Abbe Lacaille was an immensely industrious observational astronomer whose career was climaxed by a scientific expedition to the Cape of Good Hope; his studies there … [Click Below for Full Description]

HUME, David.
London [i.e. Yverdon]: [F.-B. of Félice], 1766. Duodecimo (177 x 105 mm). Contemporary marbled wrappers, pages uncut. Contemporary ink notation on verso of front cover. Covers lightly marked, some light chipping to covers and a few pages, a few small ink marks on title page, loss to corner of p. 57 not affecting text, offset on final blank. A very good copy. Hume's account of his dispute with Rousseau was first published in Paris in October 1766. Two pirated editions followed later that year, the first of which was printed in London, the second of which, this edition, was printed in Yverdon and included extended commentary which had not been present in the previous editions. The work consists of "correspondence between Hume and Rousseau, with connecting narrative passages by Hume. Rousseau had maligned him so deeply, and the city gossips had filled out the tale so apocryphally, that Hume was stung into adopting this method of clearing himself. His friends, both English and French, at first advised against publication, but soon d'Alembert and his circle changed their minds and urged it". (Jessop). The book is rare in any state, and especially so in uncut state. Todd, Hume and the Enlightenment, p. 202; Jessop p. 38 for earlier edition; ESTC N31270.

(FAUSTUS )
London: For H.W.,, 1766. To which is now added, The Necromancer, or, Harlequin Doctor Faustus; As Performed at the Theatre Royal in Covent-Garden. Truly translated from the original Copies. Duodecimo (144 x 86 mm), pp. 131, [1] bl. Contemporary "school" cloth, spine expertly repaired. Old stain, probably tallow, affecting the lower outer portion of the first dozen leaves, paper still sound, fore-edge margin a little close, a good copy. Apparently the first edition under this title (adding "Surprising"), although this immortal story appeared in English at last as early as 1592, as The Historie of the damnable Life, and deserved Death of Doctor John Faustus (where it is described as "Newly imprinted"), an edition which is often called The English Faust Book. The prose narrative of Faustus's adventures here gives many details omitted from Christopher Marlowe's play. Helen of Troy, for example, is reported to have borne him a son. The Necromancer, or Harlequin Doctor Faustus, was first performed in late 1723 and printed in various iterations in 1724. It was one of several successful musical entertainments in which John Rich (1692–1761), under the stage name Lun, performed the mute role of Harlequin. The addenda here, occupying the last 10 pages, is a truncated version, with two scenes set in a study and "The Doctor's School of Magick" respectively. This edition is institutionally rare, with three locations only in ESTC: University of Hull, Pierpont Morgan, and Yale.

Stamp Act]
Paris [i.e., London], 1766. 15pp. Modern three-quarter morocco and marbled boards, spine gilt. Modern bookplate on front pastedown. Very minor foxing and soiling. Very good. Prints the arguments made by those members of the House of Lords who opposed a repeal of the Stamp Act. The main reason seems to be not that the tax is just, but that repealing it would set a bad precedent. This pamphlet also lists the Lords who spoke and voted against the repeal. Their votes would prove to be in vain, however, as the bill passed both houses and received royal assent on March 18, one week after the Lords' vote. This work was also issued as part of CORRECT COPIES OF TWO PROTESTS AGAINST THE BILL TO REPEAL THE AMERICAN STAMP ACT... the same year. In this issue, the first paragraph incorrectly reads "Declaration Bill." Only a handful of copies in ESTC. ESTC T47360. AMERICAN CONTROVERSY 66-29a. HOWES C785, "aa."

Contemporary calf. 17.5 cm The English translator has preserved the admirable sense, and improved the coarse style of his Arcadian original (Gibbon) (Ref: ESTC no. N7444. cf. Hoffmann 3,276/77; cf. Graesse 5,397; cf. Ebert 17717; cf. Brunet 4,792; cf. Moss 2,530, has an informative note; cf. The Project Gutenberg Ebook of English translations from the Greek by Finley Melville Kendall Foster. All these reference works mention the first edition of 1756, the second of 1761, and the third of 1772, but they apparantly donot know this 'third edition' of 1766) (Details: Spines gilt and with 5 raised bands. Gilt shield in the second compartment. The binder bound the half title: 'The general history of Polybius' by mistake at the beginning of the second volume. He should have bound this leaf before the title of the first volume. This would then have resulted in a regular pagination of volume 1) (Condition: Bindings scuffed, joints beginning to crack. Some wear to the head and foot of the spines and the extremities. The outer edges of the first and last few leaves browning. Small paper label on the first title) (Note: The Greek author Polybius, ca. 200 - 118 B.C., born at Megalopolis, is the historian of the rise of Rome to world power. WALPOLE, Horace (1717-1797)
London: printed for William Bathoe in the Strand, M.DCC.LXVI. [1766]. Early Reprint. 8vo: xxiv, 200pp. Beautifully rebound by Fitterer in period style, with chestnut calf spine in six compartments divided by raised bands ruled in gilt, red morocco lettering piece gilt, hand-marbled paper-covered boards, end papers renewed. A Fine binding, text block Near Fine, lightly spotted and moderately browned, first few leaves washed and so whiter then the rest. Hazen, Walpole, p.55. Gordon, Landmarks in English Literature, p. 15. PMM 211. The Third Edition (so stated), published one year after Bathoe's first. After Bathoe's death, in 1768, the sheets of this edition were taken over by John Murray and reissued with a cancel title page marked Third Edition and dated 1769. (Hazen) "On Christmas Eve 1764, a small book appeared in London with the title: 'The Castle of Otranto, A Story, translated by William Marshall, Gent. From the original Italian of Onuphrio Muralto, Canon of the Church of St. Nicholas at Otranto.' The Preface explained that the book, which had been printed in black letter at Naples in 1529, had been found 'in the library of an ancient Catholic family in the north of England'. . . . This much was obfuscation, though of an interesting kind, since the story was actually written by Horace Walpole, the aristocratic son of Sir Robert Walpole, the political superman of the early eighteenth century, and on his own account an antiquary, art historian and letter-writer. When the work was republished a year later it was still anonymous, but some initials to the accompanying sonne … [Click Below for Full Description]
