Loefling, Peter
Berlin & Stralsund, Gottlieb August Lange, 1766, 1. German edition, pp. [xxxii], 406, [1-2, errata-leaf missing], 2 engraved folding plates with several figures, 8vo, half calf with marbled boards, ruled spine with raised bands and gilt-lettered label (upper compartment of spine neatly repaired). Some browning.Note: "The star performer among the swarm of Linnaean disciples was Pehr Loefling (1729-1756), a pupil to whom Linnaeus himself seems to have been genuinely attached. … In 1751 the Spanish government invited Loefling to come to Spain to study the flora and to organize botanical research. He remained there until 1753, made collections, and wrote many letters to Linnaeus. Early in 1754 he sailed for the Spanish territories in northern South America. His explorations are in part related in his Iter, but he was doomed to die all to early: he met his death on 22 February 1756 at the mission station of Murrecurri ('Merercuri' in the literature) in what is now Venezuela. The Iter hispanicum was published by Linnaeus in 1758; it contains the text of his letters to Linnaeus and his descriptions of Spanish and African plants." (Stafleu) From the preface by Linnaeus in this German edition: "Nun kam Herr Loefling gleichsam in ein neues Element und irdisches Paradies, wo das Land den rarsten botanischen Orangerien glich, und von den Gewächsen überfloß, welche kein Botanicus vor ihm irgend gesehen oder gesammlet hatte.". Seven Years' War]: [India]: [Lally, Comte de]
Paris, 1766. 22,20pp. plus large folding map. Large folio. Stitched. Minor soiling and foxing. Very good. Defense of the Comte de Lally for his actions in India during the Seven Years' War. This is one of two versions authored by him. Lally, head of the French expedition to India, reached Pondichery in 1758. Though capable, he was incredibly unpopular and fell into a series of events which proved fatal to his career and his person. He was unsuccessful in the Siege of Madras, beaten at the Battle of Wandiwash, and eventually capitulated from the siege of Pondichery. Taken prisoner by the British, he returned to France on parole and was imprisoned for two years before being put on trial and executed. This is his last defence, published shortly thereafter or perhaps immediately preceding. A publisher's note is dated April 14 and Lally was executed May 6. The map shows the Indian subcontinent and Madagascar.

[Click Below for Full Description]
