VOLTAIRE
- S.n., S.l. 1766 - 1767, In-8 (12x19,5cm), VII, 168pp. [AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] Anonymous edit … [Click Below for Full Description]

"Messance was secretary to the intendant of the Auvergne, Jean-François de La Michodière, and he published his Recherches sur la population in 1766. Recognizing the impossibility of coming up with actual figures for the population of the realm, Messance sought to arrive at an estimate through a series of calculations from the figures for births that were available from baptismal records After comparing the available figures for seven provinces and a large number of cities in France, Messance demonstrated that the population of these regions had increased by one-thirteenth in the previous sixty years. He admitted that this was not a great deal of growth, but it was enough to counter the arguments of those who believed that the population had de … [Click Below for Full Description]

Cumming, Alexander
London: the Author, 1766. First edition (pp. [9], 192, index). Quarto (26 cm) in modern binding, gilt titles in compartment to spine, original marbled boards and edges. Sixteen copperplate engravings by Cumming as called for. Alexander Cumming (1731/2- 1814), watchmaker and 'mechanician', as ODNB would have it, was an accomplished and well- connected practitioner of applied physics employed by the Duke of Argyll and the Earl of Bute among others, capable of building an organ, designing a microtome-- 'a device for cutting very thin samples [of wood] for examination under a microscope' (Clifton), making a clock which recorded barometer readings, or simply making a fine gold stopwatch for this or that wealthy grandee. So it seems odd that his note To the Reader, which immediately follows a traditional grandiloquent address To the King seeking approval and favour, should amount to a repudiation of various calumnies, suggestions of plagiarism, and other unspecified accusations against him. But Cumming, as it happened, was an expert member of the Longitude committee, struck to examine claims to a prize of 20,000 GBP to be granted anyone who produced a marine chronometer capable of determining with exactitude the degree of longitude at which a sea-going vessel was located. For something like thirty years John Harrison had been at work on such a 'sea clock' and had by 1765 submitted for the committee's approval a number of increasingly sophisticated (and remarkably accurate) timekeeping devices, any of which might qualify for the prize. Cumming's note was aimed at extracting himsel … [Click Below for Full Description]

Robert Sayer, London, 1766. Second edition "with additions". 6pp of text followed by 100 plates as called for. A curious 20thc. binding with patterned paper boards. Internally the plates are generally in good condition with some finger marks and signs of use to the margins. There are a couple that have had small tears to the margins repaired with what looks like archival paper but nothing significant. The plate with the most tears, about 4, is plate 56 by Hogarth (see images) but again the image is unaffected. As well as the tears this plate appears more used and it has been slightly cropped to the front margin. maybe it was loose at some point before the rebind? Original end papers and a tidy bit of reinforcing to the front inner hinge. A decent copy in spite of the flaws mentioned above. Postage will be confirmed when you enquire or order and for light or very heavy books will vary from the ABE quote which is based on a 1kg parcel. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

REIMARUS, Hermann Samuel (H.S.R.),
