Le Cat&#39;s summary work on the famous controversy between his gorgeret-cystitome and Frere Cume&#39;s lithotome-cache, which went on for 20 years. Famed in the sciences as well as surgery, Le Cat organized the Royal Academy of Sciences of Rouen and took on the likes of Haller and Rousseau in disputes. He invented several devices for lithotomy, of which the gorgeret-cystitome was the most ingenious. It was a multipurpose instrument that acted as a gorgeret when closed, a dilator when opened lengthways, and a lithotome when a blade was pushed out from its convex margin. To facilitate its use it had a button on the beak of the cystitome and the edges of the groove in the sound were turned in so that the blade could not become disengaged.</p><p> While Le Cat had the support of most lithotomists for his device, the lithotome-cache when suitably modified proved its worth over and above the doubtful reputation of the surgeon-priest Fr.       Naples 1766 - William Hamilton Illustrated sheet from Collection of Etruscan, Greek and Roman Antiquities from the Cabinet of the Honorable William Hamilton Naples: 1766-1767 Aquatint engraving in black and terra-cotta ink 24 1/2&#148; x 34 1/2&#148; framed Sir William Hamilton was sent to Naples in 1764 as chief British envoy to the Bourbon King Ferdinand IV. Inspired by the cultural heritage of Italy, Hamilton developed a great passion for archaeology and the study of antiquities, and soon embarked on a project to publish illustrations of the objects that so fascinated him. Ferdinand IV, as official guardian of the treasures of Pompeii and Herculaneum, encouraged the wealthy gentlemen of his kingdom to form private &#147;cabinets&#148; of antiquities. Some of these gentlemen hired their own workmen, while others bought from scavengers and displayed, or resold, a rich harvest of pottery, sculpture, jewelry, metalwork and other artifacts. Hamilton assembled just such a collection, and then chose the finest examples of excavated pottery art for his publication. Other objects came from the Royal Collection, lent generously by the Ferdinand IV. Hamilton was driven in his project by one particular ambition: he wanted to change completely and indelibly the taste of Europe, to &#147;.annihilate those Gothic forms which habit alone renders supportable.&#148; His Collection of Etruscan, Greek and Roman Antiquities had two kinds of illustrations. The most famous are the narrative and pictorial plates, each one with decorative motifs taken from a vase, cup or plate. They exhibit the classical black and terra-cotta color scheme, with touches of accent coloring on some of the plates. The subject matter ranges, as it did on the original ceramic pieces, from activities of the mythical gods and creatures, to feasting and the daily life of ancient peoples. Each image is beautifully detailed and has rich border decorations. Hamilton also provided black and white perspective drawings of the pieces so that artists and craftsmen could follow the ancient forms &#147;with as much truth and precision as if he had the Originals themselves in his possession.&#148; In the end, Hamilton&#146;s acumen and persistence were rewarded. His book became a virtual dictionary of Classical form throughout the l8th and l9th centuries, while his collection became a cornerstone of the British Museum&#146;s Department of Classical Antiquities.

Nicht bei Goedeke. - "Rousseaus 'Lettre à d'Alembert sur les spectacles' (1758) war eine Reaktion auf dessen Artikel über Genf in der 'Encyclopédie'. Rousseau verteidigte in seinem Brief die Genfer Obrigkeit und deren Verbot einer Theatergründung in der Stadt, indem er 'die Bühne als Verderbnis der Sitten' (Safranski) anprangerte. Der Brief hatte Folgen. Zum einen bedeutete er den endgültigen Bruch Rousseaus mit den Enzyclopädisten, den ehemaligen Freuden; zum anderen verschärfte er die Diskussion um die Rolle des Theaters. Marmontels Antwort auf diesen Angriff erschien zuerst 1761 als Anhang zu seinen 'Contes moraux'. 'Das Theater hat zu allen Zeiten seine Feinde gehabt. Auch in Deutschland hat es Milzsüchtige und Heuchler gegeben, die die Bühne als eine Schule der Laster, als eine Verführerinn zu Wollust und Müßiggang verketzert haben. Doch der Beyfall und der Tadel dieser Leute gelten dem Theater gleich viel. Ihre Krankheit ist vorbei, und sie hören auf zu lästern. A Fine binding, text block Near Fine, lightly spotted and moderately browned, first few leaves washed and so whiter then the rest. Hazen, Walpole, p.55. Gordon, Landmarks in English Literature, p. 15. PMM 211. The Third Edition (so stated), published one year after Bathoe&#146;s first. After Bathoe's death, in 1768, the sheets of this edition were taken over by John Murray and reissued with a cancel title page marked Third Edition and dated 1769. (Hazen) "On Christmas Eve 1764, a small book appeared in London with the title: 'The Castle of Otranto, A Story, translated by William Marshall, Gent. From the original Italian of Onuphrio Muralto, Canon of the Church of St. Nicholas at Otranto.' The Preface explained that the book, which had been printed in black letter at Naples in 1529, had been found 'in the library of an ancient catholic family in the north of England'. . . . This much was obfuscation, though of an interesting kind, since the story was actually written by Horace Walpole, the aristocratic son of Sir Robert Walpole, the political superman of the early eighteenth century, and on his own account an antiquary, art historian and letter-writer. When the work was republished a year later it was still anonymous, but some initials to the accompanying sonnet gave away the author's identity. In the Preface to the second edition, in which the explanation 'A Gothic Story' is added to the title page, Walpole . . . explains the story as an attempt to blend the ancient style of romance, where 'all was imagination and improbability,' with the modern style in which 'nature is always intended to be [ ] copied with success.' . . . Overblown, outrageous, cheerfully unstable and in some ways silly as it is, Otranto was hugely innovative and influential, and remains an indispensable document in the history of the gothic and of proto-romantic literature." (The Literary Encyclopedia) "'The Castle of Otranto,' wrote Sir Walter Scott, 'is remarkable not only for the wild interest of the story, but as the first modern attempt to found a tale of amusing fiction upon the basis of the ancient romances of chivalry.' . . . Un capitolo intero è dedicato a burro e formaggio, in particolare parmigiano, altro a bevande quali caffè, tè e cioccolato. Ampia trattazione viene data a confetture e marmellate. Front pastedown of volume I with the leather book labels of Roderick Terry, [Edgar] Mills, and Doris Louise Benz. Temple Scott, pp. 173-75; Rothschild 1028; Tinker 1110. Lower corner of terminal blank in first volume skillfully renewed, artful repair and faint glue stains at inner margin of B3 in second volume, other isolated trivial defects, but A VERY FINE COPY, THE TEXT NEARLY PRISTINE, AND THE HANDSOME BINDINGS ESPECIALLY BRIGHT. Written in 1761-62 but not published until four years later, "The Vicar of Wakefield" was said to have been rescued from some of Goldsmith's unpublished manuscripts by Dr. Johnson, who thus saved the penniless author from imprisonment by selling it to a publisher for £60. Considered the masterpiece of the middle-class domestic novel, the "Vicar" has never gone out of style because its whimsically delineated characters have a delightful simplicity that somehow insulates them against ultimate misfortune, and the innocent and virtuous are rewarded, as they should be, in the end. This copy has a distinguished provenance, having been owned, in succession, by Roderick Terry (1849-1933), Edgar Mills, and Doris L. Benz (1907-84), all of whom collected beautiful and substantial items chosen with considered discrimination. Terry accumulated items in various fields, but his library was especially strong in English literature: he owned the four folios, and he had strong holdings in Byron, Lamb, Spenser, and Milton. He also collected Americana, assembling a complete set of autographs of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, in addition to many literary items. Dickinson characterizes him as "a connoisseur in the grand old tradition of the 19th century. His library reflected his eclectic tastes and [his] cultivated good judgment." For more on Benz, see item #52. Probably the main reason this volume had such celebrated owners is the beauty of its bindings. Riviere is considered one of the foremost names in English binding partly because the firm did consistently fine work and partly because it was so long in business. Robert Riviere began as a bookseller and binder in Bath in 1829, then set up shop as a binder in London in 1840; in 1881, he took his grandson Percival Calkin into partnership, at which time the firm became known as Riviere & Son, and the bindery continued to do business until 1939. In the early part of the 20th century, an intense rivalry between Riviere and Sangorski & Sutcliffe developed, and collectors have reaped immense dividends ever since in the form of more and more elaborate work that was not infrequently of breathtaking beauty. Following the death of Hasselquist in Smyrna in 1752, at the early age of 30, his natural collections and arabian manuscripts was acquired by Queen Lovisa Ulrika who incorporated them into her collections at Drottningholm. The present work is one of the first natural descriptions of Palestine and was translated into German in 1766, French in 1768 and Dutch in 1771. According to the preface, the translator of this edition is a "gentleman" who has spent time in Sweden, where he has been a pupil of Linnaeus', and who is not English by birth. In a footnote on page 297 the translator mentions a letter from Linnaeus to John Ellis. It is possible that the translator is Daniel Solander, who lived in London where he was in close contact with Ellis, whose collections he was sorting and cataloguing at the time.       Nuremberg 1766 - Etching, with engraving, coloured by hand, by A.L. Wirsing. Very good condition. A very fine image from the work described by Dunthorne as 'one of the finest records of the cultivated flowers of the period' and by Blunt (p. 166) as 'one of the most decorative florilegia of the mid-eighteenth century.' A complete copy of this work sold for almost $1,000,000 in London in 2002. The great characteristic of this beautiful plate, from Trew's Hortus Nitidissimus , is the way in which the watercolour and bodycolour painting almost entirely eclipses the engraved lines. Although the work was actually started by Johann Michael Seligmann (1720-1762), the engravings were based on the collection of flower drawings owned by the botanist and bibliophile Christoph Trew, a distinguished physician of Nuremberg. Georg Ehret (1708-1770), who enjoyed Trew's patronage from 1732 and traveled widely on his behalf before settling in London in 1736, produced the designs for 40 of the eventual total of 188 plates. The remainder were drawn up by a team of local artists, including J.C. Keller, Professor of Drawing at Erlangen University, the court painter Nikolaus Eisenberger, and A.L. Wirsing. Cf. Charles Nicolas Deslon ou d'Eslon (1750-1786) est un médecin français du Siècle des Lumières. Il fut docteur-régent, professeur, à la Faculté de médecine de Paris, premier médecin du comte d'Artois et membre de la Société royale de Médecine. Charles Deslon naît en 17501. Il fait ses études de médecine à Besançon, puis à Paris, et devient médecin ordinaire du comte d'Artois et régent de la Faculté. À partir de 1778, Charles Deslon devient un adepte et un ardent défenseur des théories sur le Magnétisme animal du médecin allemand Franz Anton Mesmer, dont il avait suivi les leçons. Comme Mesmer, Deslon prétend alors guérir certaines maladies par imposition des mains, publiant plusieurs ouvrages sur le sujet, de 1780 à 17822. Son ouvrage le plus important est sans doute ses Observations sur le magnétisme animal, qui date de 1780. Au cours de ses démêlés au sujet du magnétisme animal, Charles Deslon faillit être radié du tableau de la Faculté de Médecine. Les deux commissions nommées en 1784 par Louis XVI pour étudier le magnétisme animal fondent leurs conclusions sur l'observation du travail de Deslon qui, contrairement à Mesmer, accepte prudemment de partager avec eux ce qu'il sait sur ce phénomène. A large and wonderfully decorative eighteenth century map of the county of Middlesex by the London draughtsman and cartographer; Richard Seale, printed by Bowles, Sayer and Tinney in Fleet Street. Seale worked on many maps for an assortment of widely published surveys, magazines and atlases. This striking map is flanked by the arms of all 92 Livery Companies of the City of London. Although these are listed alphabetically, the reality is that in 1515 the Court of Aldermen of the City of London settled an order of precedence for the forty-eight Livery Companies then in existence, which was based on the Companies&#39; economic or political power. There are now 108 such companies in existence. The map is greatly enhanced by a decorative rococo style title cartouche and a large City of London coat of arms. This is truly a splendid and unusual map.

      Boston. May 16, 1766.. Broadside, 10 1/4 x 8 1/2 inches. Docketed in manuscript on the verso in a contemporary hand. Old folds. A few chips in the left edge, far from the text. Eight small holes at fold lines, affecting a few letters but not the meaning of the text. Tanned, stained, and wrinkled. Withal, still a good copy of an ephemeral item. An apparently unrecorded and unique broadside announcing the news of the repeal of the Stamp Act. This broadside was printed in Boston on May 16, 1766, the same day that the ship, Harrison, owned by John Hancock, arrived in port with the news. The text reprints an article from the LONDON GAZETTE of March 18, 1766, giving details of King George III&#39;s appearance in the House of Lords to assent to the law repealing the Stamp Act, the tax that was so hated in the American colonies. The Stamp Act was passed in 1765, and required that every legal document in the American colonies bear a stamp representing the tax paid upon it. The revenue was to be used to defray the expenses of defending the colonies. It was the Stamp Act, and other similar Parliamentary Acts, that spurred the colonies to revolt against the Crown. The text of the broadside goes on to describe the jubilation in England over the news of the law&#39;s repeal, especially among merchants. The text also notes the hope that other odious laws would be repealed, and that "the friends to America are very powerful, and disposed to assist us to the utmost of their ability." It concludes with the following exultation: "It is impossible to express the joy the town is now in, on receiving the above, great, glorious and important news - the bells in all the churches were immediately set a ringing, and we hear the day for a general rejoicing will be the beginning of next week." We can locate five other similar broadsides printed in the American colonies in the spring of 1766 announcing the news of the repeal of the Stamp Act: two broadsides printed by Hugh Gaine in New York, one printed in Connecticut by Timothy Green, one printed in Rhode Island by Samuel Hall, and another printed in Boston. Each is known in only a small handful of copies. Ford, Evans, and NAIP note that the other Boston broadside was printed by a confederation of the printers in the town (including Richard and Samuel Draper; Benjamin Edes and John Gill; John Green and Joseph Russell; and Thomas and John Fleet), and it is known in only four copies (MWA, DLC, MH- H, MHi). The present broadside contains the same exact text as the known Boston broadside (based on comparison with the copy at the American Antiquarian Society), but is clearly a different setting of type, with different line breaks, capitalization, and without the ornaments on the other version. This copy also does not have any imprint identifying the printer or printers. This version of the broadside is not in Ford, Evans, NAIP, or Shipton & Mooney. Unrecorded, unique, and vitally important.
