      Rome 1766 - 1st state Hind 79John Wilton-Ely 212The Watermark that is present is number 36 in John Wilton-Ely on page 1162 and it dated between 1760-1780.From Vedute Di Roma thick laid paper, with the Fleurs-de-Lys water mark. Giovanni Battista Piranesi was one of the leading figures in the development of the neoclassical style in the late 18th Century. As architect, archaeologist, artist, designer, collector, and antiquities dealer, he produced a series of etchings and engravings depicting the glories of ancient Rome. These fine prints served as source material for other architects and designers. He was born in Venice on the 4th October 1720. The son of a stone-mason, he was educated as an architect under his maternal uncle Matto Lucchesi and under Carlo Zucchi. In 1740 Piranesi left Venice for Rome, there he studied etching under Giuseppe Vasi. He appears to have had little success in these early years in Rome and as his father was unable to continue his allowance returned to Venice in 1744. He was soon, however, encouraged to return to Rome by Giuseppe Wagner, a successful engraver and publisher of Venice. This time he achieved success, and a constant series of works, illustrating architecture and antiquities, issued from his studio until his death in 1778. His output in etched plates is enormous (about 1000 numbers in all). While he achieved a work of magnitude in pictorial records of Roman monuments of antiquity and of the Renaissance, and gave immense archæological, antiquarian, and topographical value to this work, the artistic quality always predominates. He was fond of peopling his ruins with Callot-like figures, and "like Callot makes great use of the swelling line" (Hind). He had two sons and a daughter, all of whom helped him in his work and after his death carried on his publications in Rome and Paris. They were Francesco (born 1748 or 1756; died 1810), Pietro (who lived till after 1807) and Laura (born 1750). His position in Rome and in Europe after 1760 was a prominent one. He was well-known figure to the wealthy English visitors in Rome and was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in 1757. Most of his life was passed in Rome, etching, writing, publishing, and directing a workshop in which the restoration and sale of antiques played a considerable part.He was famous for his poetic views of Rome and also his fantastic imaginary interiors. His skills, allied to his deep knowledge of archaeology, provided the substance for his Vedute (Views), a series of 135 etchings of ancient and contemporary Rome, published from 1745 onwards, which established the popular mental image of the city. Ornamenti Antichi was a collection of 110 etchings documenting large sculptural vases, together with other antiquities excavated (and in some cases created) in Italy in the 18th century. The prints were initially separately issued and sold by Piranesi over a period of several years and subsequently collected in two folio volumes, each with its own title page, in 1778. They illustrate a wide range of genuine antiquities, as well as Piranesi's own collections, from utilitarian objects such as cinerary urns, lamps, and sarcophagi to monumental vases. The plates in Vasi often included text by Piranesi with information about where the objects were discovered and their contemporary location, and the prints bore dedications to his patrons, colleagues, visitors and influential people. He believed absolutely in the supremacy of Roman over Greek architecture, an argument he expounded most forcefully in his Della magnificenza ed architettura dei Romani (On the Magnificence of Roman Architecture, 1761). his romanticized views and imaginary interiors had a profound effect on stage designers, painters of capricci such as Hubert Robert, and even writers: William Beckford, the author of the Gothic novel and Vathek . Autore delle Riflessioni apologetiche, sopra la podestà del Sommo Pontefice &c. circa il giudizio dato nel Corrier Letterario intorno la detta Opera nel foglio N. 14 de’ 14 Marzo 1767 In Padova, MDCCLXVII (1767). Nella stamperia Conzatti. Un volume in-4° (303 x 218 mm), pp. VIII, 156. Bellissima legatura in pelle maculato con cornice dorata e doppio filetto a secco ai piatti. Dorso a sette riquadri e sei nervi con ricchi fregi dorati; risguardi in seta, due segnalibri in seta; tagli dorati. Esemplare molto fresco con una stupenda carta pesante. Fregi al frontespizio e capilettera ornati. Il volume contiene la risposta del Carminati all’autore delle Istruzioni intorno la Santa Sede, un libro su cui anche il Nunzio Apostolico a Venezia si era soffermato: «Ultimamente – scriveva il Carafa – è uscito un libro de’ più ingiuriosi che mai siasi letto alla Santa Sede e all’autorità pontificia col titolo Istruzioni intorno alla Santa Sede tradotte dal francese. In realtà si crede che sia composto a Venezia». Era, però una svista, come nota Infelise (L’editoria veneziana del ’700, pp. 111-112, da cui la citazione è tratta), perché l’opera di indirizzo gallicano era effettivamente una traduzione di un testo francese pubblicato nel 1692 ed edita sotto falso nome dal Graziosi nel 1765. Nel foglio allegato si legge la replica alla nota pubblicata sul “Corriere letterario” di Francesco Griselini, che difendeva e appoggiava i volumi del Graziosi (che ne era anche lo stampatore). Bonita encuadernacion homogénea muy ligeramente usada, pleno tafilete avellana época, doble tejuelo, lomera cuajada, hierros dorados en cantos, cajos parcialmente abiertos sin estar sueltos, cortes jaspeados. Ligera señal marginal en últimas hojas al vol. II. Buen y sólido ejemplar, magnífica edición barroca, muy limpia, estupendo papel de hilo, bella impresión con varias tipografías, algunas cursivas, los grabados de gran calidad y detalle, pensamos que prodía ser una edición clandestina, ya que, no indica impresor y, sobre todo, por su contenido satírico hacia el clero. Texto en italiano. La ciudad de Lucca se encuentra en la Toscana. Niccolò Forteguerri, poeta italiano, nació en Pistoya el 7 de Noviembre de 1674 y murió en Roma el 17 de Febrero 1735. Estudió jurisprudencia en Pisa, vivió luego en Roma, acompañó al legado Zondari a España, de donde regresó en 1703, y recibió de Clemente XI el título de camarero, luego un canonicato y, finalmente la prelatura. Su poema más famoso es la epoyeya satírica "Ricciardetto" (1725) . A causa de su sátira sobre la clerecía no apareció hasta la muerte del autor, en Venecia (con el pie de imprenta de París, 1738). Este poema profano, imitación de Ariosto, sirve de continuación al Orlando furioso, aunque no alcanza el valor poético de éste. Esta obra, si bien cimentó la fama de su autor, le perjudicó en su carrera eclesiástica, pues no pudo ver colmado su deseo de revestir la púrpura cardenalicia. First edition of the author's first book; this is a fine association copy, having belonged to Matthew Boulton (1728-1809), the well-known engineer, who established a famous factory in Soho for the manufacture of high quality metal work and other goods. Cumming (1733-1814), mathematician and mechanic, carried on a watchmaking business in Bond Street, London for many years. The two, with such similar professional interests, must have known each other well. This was considered to be a "definitive professional textbook."-Taylor, Mathematical Practitioners of Hanoverian England. The first part is devoted to a discussion of improvements possible to clock works and the second part is concerned with improvements to watch works. First Edition of the French Translation of the third volume of Müller's Nachrichten von Seereisen. (Sammlung Russiche Geschichte (1758)), an invaluable reference source for the history of Russian discovery and exploration in north-east Asia and along the north-west coast of America. It is the best contemporary account of Bering's first and second expeditions to Bering Strait and the western limits of North America, during which he discovered Alaska and the Aleutian Islands. Müller served as a scientific associate on Bering's second voyage, 1741-42. Müller’s work also contains the substance of crucial written reports which he found in the archives in the town of Jakutsk which established that the Bering Strait had in fact first been discovered and navigated by Semyon Dezhnyov in 1648. This French translation is apparently fuller and superior to the English translation published by Thomas Jefferys in 1761. The map is a copy of the St. Petersburg 1758 issue of the Müller map (first published in 1754), which contained the first cartographic representation of what is now the Alaska peninsula. The map also confirmed the existence of a body of water between Asia and America, a subject of great controversy over the preceding two hundred years, and presented a correct delineation of the Kurile Islands. Le Cat&#39;s summary work on the famous controversy between his gorgeret-cystitome and Frere Cume&#39;s lithotome-cache, which went on for 20 years. Famed in the sciences as well as surgery, Le Cat organized the Royal Academy of Sciences of Rouen and took on the likes of Haller and Rousseau in disputes. He invented several devices for lithotomy, of which the gorgeret-cystitome was the most ingenious. It was a multipurpose instrument that acted as a gorgeret when closed, a dilator when opened lengthways, and a lithotome when a blade was pushed out from its convex margin. To facilitate its use it had a button on the beak of the cystitome and the edges of the groove in the sound were turned in so that the blade could not become disengaged.</p><p> While Le Cat had the support of most lithotomists for his device, the lithotome-cache when suitably modified proved its worth over and above the doubtful reputation of the surgeon-priest Fr.       Naples 1766 - William Hamilton Illustrated sheet from Collection of Etruscan, Greek and Roman Antiquities from the Cabinet of the Honorable William Hamilton Naples: 1766-1767 Aquatint engraving in black and terra-cotta ink 24 1/2&#148; x 34 1/2&#148; framed Sir William Hamilton was sent to Naples in 1764 as chief British envoy to the Bourbon King Ferdinand IV. Inspired by the cultural heritage of Italy, Hamilton developed a great passion for archaeology and the study of antiquities, and soon embarked on a project to publish illustrations of the objects that so fascinated him. Ferdinand IV, as official guardian of the treasures of Pompeii and Herculaneum, encouraged the wealthy gentlemen of his kingdom to form private &#147;cabinets&#148; of antiquities. Some of these gentlemen hired their own workmen, while others bought from scavengers and displayed, or resold, a rich harvest of pottery, sculpture, jewelry, metalwork and other artifacts. Hamilton assembled just such a collection, and then chose the finest examples of excavated pottery art for his publication. Other objects came from the Royal Collection, lent generously by the Ferdinand IV. Hamilton was driven in his project by one particular ambition: he wanted to change completely and indelibly the taste of Europe, to &#147;.annihilate those Gothic forms which habit alone renders supportable.&#148; His Collection of Etruscan, Greek and Roman Antiquities had two kinds of illustrations. The most famous are the narrative and pictorial plates, each one with decorative motifs taken from a vase, cup or plate. They exhibit the classical black and terra-cotta color scheme, with touches of accent coloring on some of the plates. The subject matter ranges, as it did on the original ceramic pieces, from activities of the mythical gods and creatures, to feasting and the daily life of ancient peoples. Each image is beautifully detailed and has rich border decorations. Hamilton also provided black and white perspective drawings of the pieces so that artists and craftsmen could follow the ancient forms &#147;with as much truth and precision as if he had the Originals themselves in his possession.&#148; In the end, Hamilton&#146;s acumen and persistence were rewarded. His book became a virtual dictionary of Classical form throughout the l8th and l9th centuries, while his collection became a cornerstone of the British Museum&#146;s Department of Classical Antiquities.

Rousseau verteidigte in seinem Brief die Genfer Obrigkeit und deren Verbot einer Theatergründung in der Stadt, indem er 'die Bühne als Verderbnis der Sitten' (Safranski) anprangerte. Der Brief hatte Folgen. Zum einen bedeutete er den endgültigen Bruch Rousseaus mit den Enzyclopädisten, den ehemaligen Freuden; zum anderen verschärfte er die Diskussion um die Rolle des Theaters. Marmontels Antwort auf diesen Angriff erschien zuerst 1761 als Anhang zu seinen 'Contes moraux'. 'Das Theater hat zu allen Zeiten seine Feinde gehabt. Auch in Deutschland hat es Milzsüchtige und Heuchler gegeben, die die Bühne als eine Schule der Laster, als eine Verführerinn zu Wollust und Müßiggang verketzert haben. Doch der Beyfall und der Tadel dieser Leute gelten dem Theater gleich viel. Ihre Krankheit ist vorbei, und sie hören auf zu lästern. After Bathoe's death, in 1768, the sheets of this edition were taken over by John Murray and reissued with a cancel title page marked Third Edition and dated 1769. (Hazen) "On Christmas Eve 1764, a small book appeared in London with the title: 'The Castle of Otranto, A Story, translated by William Marshall, Gent. From the original Italian of Onuphrio Muralto, Canon of the Church of St. Nicholas at Otranto.' The Preface explained that the book, which had been printed in black letter at Naples in 1529, had been found 'in the library of an ancient catholic family in the north of England'. . . . This much was obfuscation, though of an interesting kind, since the story was actually written by Horace Walpole, the aristocratic son of Sir Robert Walpole, the political superman of the early eighteenth century, and on his own account an antiquary, art historian and letter-writer. When the work was republished a year later it was still anonymous, but some initials to the accompanying sonnet gave away the author's identity. In the Preface to the second edition, in which the explanation 'A Gothic Story' is added to the title page, Walpole . . . explains the story as an attempt to blend the ancient style of romance, where 'all was imagination and improbability,' with the modern style in which 'nature is always intended to be [ ] copied with success.' . . . Overblown, outrageous, cheerfully unstable and in some ways silly as it is, Otranto was hugely innovative and influential, and remains an indispensable document in the history of the gothic and of proto-romantic literature."
