Cracovie [i.e. Paris], 1766.. (Brunet. V, 759. Conlon, 'Siecle des Lumieres', 66:370. Gay, III, 626). Bel exemplaire, frais bien relie a l'epoque..

        La pharsale

Paris: Chez Merlin 2 vols. I: 8vo (19.5 cm, 7.75"). Frontis., [1] f., lxxix, [1 (blank)] 304 pp., [1 (errata)] f.; 5 plates. II: 8vo (19.5 cm, 7.75"). [1] f., 315, [1] pp., [2] ff.; 5 plts.. 1766 Lucan's Pharsalia is an epic poem, the greatest in Latin after the Aeneid, on the subject of the civil war between Pompey and Caesar. Born in Córdoba, Spain, Lucan (A.D. 39?-65) was the grandson of the elder Seneca, nephew of the younger Seneca, and the brother of the Gallio mentioned in Acts 18. He published the Pharsalia in A.D.. 62 or 63, but it seems likely that his poetic talent aroused the jealously of the vain Nero, as after its publication the emperor forbade him to write or even plead in the courts, and then later compelled him to commit suicide for alleged treason. The editio princeps of Lucan was printed in Rome by Sweynheym and Pannartz in 1469. The illustrated plates in this edition are after Gravelot, and the French translation is by M. Marmontel. Binding: Contemporary treed calf, spine gilt extra with badge of a thistle in compartments; red leather labels. Marbled endpapers. All edges red. Provenance: Small booklabel of William Salloch on rear pastedown. Binding as above, gilt somewhat dimmed; some chipping of leather to corners and spine tips, and endpapers rubbed. Internally generally clean, with some browning from turn-ins and a few spots of soiling. Bookplate on front pastedowns.

A Succinct View of the Origin of Our Colonies, With Their Civil State

1766. 1766 Pamphlet Questioning the Extent of Parliamentary Supremacy [Bollan, William (c.1710-1776)]. A Succinct View of the Origin of our Colonies, With Their Civil State, Founded by Queen Elizabeth, Corroborated by Succeeding Princes, And Confirmed by Acts of Parliament; Whereby the Nature of the Empire Established in America, And the Errors of Various Hypotheses Formed Thereupon, May be Clearly Understood. With Observations on the Commercial, Beneficial and Perpetual Union of the Colonies with This Kingdom. Being an Extract from an Essay Lately Published, Entitled The Freedom of Speech and Writing, &c. London: S.n., 1766. [ii], 46 pp. Octavo (7" x 4-1/2"). Stab-stitched pamphlet bound into recent stiff marbled wrappers, printed title panel to front cover. Moderate toning to text, light foxing to a few leaves, small chip to fore-edge of title page, internally clean. * Only edition (in this form). Bollan was a lawyer and agent for Colony of Massachusetts. A Succinct View is an extract from Bollan's The Freedom of Speech and Writing upon Public Affairs Considered, a longer work first published in 1766, that discusses the role of parliamentary supremacy. It is a subtle and somewhat subversive work. Bollan begins by asserting "that the 'care of common rights' should be left to Parliament. In the midst of what was essentially an apologia for parliamentary supremacy, Bollan thuis implied, first, that some noncommon rights existed, and second, that protecting such rights might be within the purview of an authority other than Parliament" (LaCroix). OCLC locates several copies, but none in law libraries. LaCroix, The Ideological Origins of American Federalism 242 (n94). Sabin, A Dictionary of Books Relating to America 93387.

        Memoirs of Count Lally,

London: Printed by Charles Kiernan, for F. Newbery,, 1766. from His embarking for the East Indies, as Commander in Chief of the French Forces in that Country, to his being sent Prisoner of War to England, after the Surrender of Pondicherry. Octavo (205 x 124 mm). Modern half sheep, old marbled boards, raised bands to spine, titles to spine gilt, all edges sprinkled red. Bound with the half-title. One engraved folding map of Lally's military operations. Contemporary ownership inscription to title page. Extremities lightly rubbed, a few minor scuff marks to boards, endpapers a little browned, mild offsetting from map, text block slightly foxed throughout. A very good copy. First edition. A contemporary account of the French campaigns in India during the Seven Years' War in which, Lally (1702-66), a French general of Irish descent, commanded the French forces. Initially successful in pushing the British forces back from Pondicherry to Madras, Lally later found himself defeated by Eyre Coote (1726-83) at the Battle of Wandiwash in 1760. By 1761, Lally was forced to surrender to Coote after the latter's siege of Pondicherry. This defeat effectively obliterated French control over Indian territories and led to Lally being accused of treason by the French court. Taken as a prisoner of war to London, Lally ill-advisedly requested he be allowed to return to France to face the charges in person; he was subsequently judged, sentenced, and executed in May 1766. This copy comes from the library of Harriot Beauclerk (1777-1837), the British actress, banker, and later duchess of St Albans, with her bookplate to front pastedown.
