– First German edition.         maj:ts nådige förordning, angående skrif- och tryck-friheten; gifwen Stockholm i Råd-Cammaren then 2.

december 1766. (Stockholm), Kongl. tryckeriet, (1766). 4:o. (8) s. Lätta fläckar. Tagen ur band.

The Philosophy of History. By M. De Voltaire.

London: Printed for L. Allcock, 1766. - First English edition. 8vo. Full calf, covers ruled in gilt, spine lettered and ruled in gilt. 316 pp. Some scuffing to edges and hinges, ownership signature and stamp at the head of the title page; a clean very good copy in general. Translated from the French work published in 1765: "La Philosophie de L'Histoire. Par feu l'Abbe Bazin." The book was published in French under the Bazin pseudonym to protect Voltaire from persecution, but this English edition appeared the following year under his own name. As in the Mcgill copy (Patrick Lee Collection), this copy has the page number '44' printed upside-down, and page number '93' printed as '39'. There was at least one edition in French published in London in 1765, but this 1766 edition appears to be the first in English. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Nuove osservazioni sopra i globetti rossi del sangue.

Nella Stamperia di Jacopo Giusti, 1766. (13 x 19,5) Cartoncino rustico mod. PRIMA EDIZIONE. 45 pp., (1) carta bianca. V-55; Wellcome III-37; Marchand & Hoff, Journal of the History of Medicine 1955, X, nos. 2-4.

        L'Art du Facteur D'Orgues (Parts I-III)

F Delatour 1766 - Large folio. Bound in two volumes: 1. Part 1 (1766) Title, i [Avertissement], 142, 52 plates; 2. Part II (1770), Title, 525 [irregular pagination], 27 plates, Part III (1770), 60. Contemporary half calf marbled boards with title panels to spine. Very worn. Some old cataloguing and library annotations to pastedown of Vol. 1 (also lacks ffe). Lacks signature Y2 in Vol 1., replaced with MS (contemporary?) page. Between 1776 and 1770 the Benedictine monk and organ builder François, Dom Bedos de Celles, published his famous work on the art of organ building. This was the first time that a detailed description of organ building had been published and is significant for not only the comprehensive details given but also the large number of extraordinarily detailed engravings of tools, techniques, pipescales, components and examples of French and German organ cases. In 1778 a fourth part was published on the subject of barrel organs but this is not part of the present volumes.

Jean-Thomas de Trattnern, Imprimeur et Libraire de la Cour, Vienna 1766 - First octavo edition of this Enlightenment-era emblem book, first published as a folio in 1759 in Parma, where sculptor Jean-Baptiste Boudard worked at the peak of his career. Boudard's Iconologie features one symbolic engraving per page, alphabetically arranged from Abondance to Zele, each accompanied by an explanatory caption. The range, detail, and animation of Boudard's engravings are remarkable. He depicts ideas and emotions, monsters and muses, concepts of time and qualities of character, with a marked emphasis on the arts and sciences: Imprimerie is a woman setting SEMPER UBIQUE in type, while Theorie wears her great open compass like a halo. Domination, head wreathed by a serpent with a lion at his feet, faces Douceur, who cradles a lamb and a dove in the shadow of a watchful elephant. Taken together, the emblems are greater than the sum of their carefully explicated parts, proceeding with a dream logic of their own. Text in French. A near-fine copy of a striking allegorical encyclopedia. Three octavo volumes: [xvi] 17-32, 1-16, 33-203, [1], [8]; [ii] 1-219 [8], [1]; [vi] 1-208 [8]. Full contemporary mottled calf, boards ruled in blind, raised bands, spine compartments elaborately tooled in gilt, red and black morocco spine labels lettered in gilt, marbled endpapers, all edges stained red. Engraved devices to title pages, engraved headpiece to introduction of Volume I, and 630 half-page engravings, each page set within a ruled border. Index at rear of each volume. Gathering B (Age de cuivre - Amour) in Volume I bound before gathering A (Abondance - Age d'argent), text complete. Light rubbing and scuffing to bindings; occasional spotting and foxing to text; preliminary blank in each volume trimmed; a few marginal tears in Volume I, not affecting plates.         LETTER, SIGNED, FROM GEORGE ROSS TO SIR JOHN ST. CLAIR, REGARDING ST. CLAIR'S BANK ACCOUNT].

London. May 10, 1766. - [1]p. plus integral address leaf. Quarto, on a folded folio sheet. Slight paper loss to address leaf, not affecting text. Slight separation at fold; other separations repaired. Minor soiling. Very good. In a folio-sized blue half morocco and cloth clamshell case, spine gilt. George Ross, a Pennsylvania signer of the Declaration of Independence, writes to Sir John St. Clair, Deputy Quarter Master General of the British Forces in America, regarding St. Clair's over-drafted account. George Ross was a lawyer, serving as the King's prosecutor for Lancaster, Pennsylvania from 1756 to 1768, after which he was elected to the Pennsylvania legislature; swayed toward the colonial cause, he was a delegate to the Continental Congress, where he signed the Declaration of Independence. St. Clair was appointed Deputy Quarter Master General of the British forces in North America in 1754. He died just a year and a half after this letter was written. Writing from London, possibly on official business, Ross includes a detailed list of the bills which have been paid out of St. Clair's account, beyond his available funds; the whole totals £386/1/2. His note reads: "Dear Sir, I have your favour of 20th March advising Bill for £100, which I shall honour, to prevent the distress of its return, but I must request of you, for your own sake, not to draw again till your funds have discharged the above heavy ballance [sic]. For tho' my inclination to serve you be great, yet it is quite irregular as well as unsafe to have so great a ballance on an open account, without shadow of security. Your Subn. and Staff pay of last year will soon discharge this debt, and afterwards, I hope, you will be open to go on comfortably with your current income." A good letter from Ross, before his crucial move into colonial politics. Ross letters are rare; there is only one letter signed in ABPC in the last thirty-five years, while all the rest are signed documents.

Karlsruher B?rgerh?user zur Zeit Friedrich Weinbrenners [Gebundene Ausgabe] Hea-Jee Im (Autor)

Zabern, 1766.

First octavo edition of this Enlightenment-era emblem book, first published as a folio in 1759 in Parma, where sculptor Jean-Baptiste Boudard worked at the peak of his career.

Miscellanies in Prose and Verse .

4to. London: T. Davies, 1766. 4to, [4], 184pp. Title with woodcut fleuron; old waterstain to top forecorners of a few leaves at front. Early or original half calf and marbled boards, red morocco label lettered in gilt; slightly rubbed, a very good copy. First edition. Anna Williams, the blind poet and companion of Samuel Johnson, had a ground-floor apartment in his house, from which she supervised the household management and expenses. 'In 1766 her Miscellanies in Prose and Verse was published as a handsome quarto by Thomas Davies. Johnson contributed a preface and several prose and verse pieces. The work had been first advertised in 1750, and there were waspish claims from Anna's friends that Johnson had not exerted himself in its production, but the publication was moderately successful, and earned the author about £100' (Oxford DNB). Justin Croft noted of his copy” “Very uncommon, as one might expect from Mrs. Thrale's statement: 'I never saw it on any Table but my own.'” Fleeman, pp. 1139-42, Courteney & Nicholl Smith, p. 111.

Lacombe, Paris 1766 - Edition originale. Important autograph letter signed to French music publisher Jean-Georges Sieber. Dated Estoras [Esterházy], 5th April 1789. A significant document regarding publication rights to a number of Haydn's symphonies and pianoforte sonatas and the "affaire Tost."

      - 2 pp. Quarto (195 x 172 mm.). In dark brown ink. With integral autograph panel addressed to Monsieur Sieber, Marchand de la Musique, Paris, with additions of Rue La Honoré a l'Hotel d'Alligre possibly in another hand. Original dark red wax seal fully intact. On laid paper with watermark "JRP." In German (with translation). Haydn is surprised not to have heard from Sieber as the publisher was supposed to have purchased 4 symphonies and 6 pianoforte sonatas from him. The composer is apparently bound to the Viennese violinist Johann Tost (who had purchased the rights to a number of his other works) for the symphonies, but Tost has not paid him for these. Haydn pledges to compose these 4 symphonies for Sieber if he takes over Tost's debt. The composer goes on to say that Tost has no rights at all to the pianoforte sonatas and has thus "swindled" Sieber; he urges the publisher to claim damages in Vienna. Haydn then inquires about Tost's behaviour in Paris and whether or not he sold Sieber 6 quartets. He asks in closing "will the Quartet, and the 2 Symphonies be engraved and soon appear?"Monsieur! I am very surprised not to have received a letter from you, because (as Herr Tost wrote to me a long time ago) you were supposed to have purchased 4 Symphonies and 6 pianoforte Sonatas for one hundred Louis d'or: as far as I am concerned, I regret being bound to Herr Tost for the 4 Symphonies, because he still owes me 300f [Gulden] for the 4 pieces. If you will take over this debt of 300f, I guarantee to compose these four Symphonies for you; but Herr Tost has no rights at all to the six pianoforte Sonatas, and has thus swindled you; you can claim your damages in Vienna. Now I would ask you to tell me candidly just how, and in what fashion, Herr Tost behaved in Paris. Did he have an Amour there? And did he also sell you the 6 quartets, and for what sum? Item, will the Quartet and the 2 Symphonies be engraved and soon appear? Please let me know all this as soon as possible. Meanwhile I remain, most respectfully, Your wholly obedient servant, Josephus Haydn."Uniform light browning, slightly heavier to central fold and extreme blank margins; one small brown spot to central fold; small (ca. 28 x 20 mm.) blank area opposite seal lacking, partially adhering to upper portion of seal; several minute holes, just touching several letters but in no way impairing legibility. In very good condition overall. Carefully laid into archival Japanese rice paper mount. Robbins Landon: Haydn Chronicle and Works, Volume II Haydn at Esterháza 1766-1790, p. 719. Robbins Landon: The Collected Correspondence and London Notebooks of Joseph Haydn, pp. 84-85 and 326."Haydn's compositional activity underwent a radical change in the 1780s. His music, which been well known and much praised since the mid-1760s, was now genuinely popular: he could scarcely keep up with the demand. He concentrated on what was salable: instrumental works that would appeal to both amateurs and connoisseurs, opera excerpts and lieder. As long as his works had been destined for the court or published without his participation, he had had little need to follow the 'opus' principle; now he adopted it for almost all his publications. Even the string quartet was subject to another pause of six years. before he composed three sets in rapid succession during 1787-90: op.50 (Artaria; dedicated to the King of Prussia), op. 54/55 (a single set of six, sold to Johann Tost, formerly a violinist at court, who resold them to various publishers) and op. 64." James Webster and Georg Feder in Grove Music Online. Haydn also sold his Symphonies nos. 88 and 89 (1787) to Tost, who resold them in Paris and elsewhere."With this letter, the affaire Tost, to which Haydn had previousy referred in a letter to Artaria. [September 22, 1788], becomes even more mysterious. Tost had with him Symphonies Nos. 88, 89 and six Quartets (known as Opp. 54 and 55). Haydn never denied Tost's rights to these works, and obviously expec

Important autograph letter signed to French music publisher Jean-Georges Sieber. Dated Estoras [Esterházy], 5th April 1789. A significant document regarding publication rights to a number of Haydn's symphonies and pianoforte sonatas and the "affaire Tost."

Robbins Landon: Haydn Chronicle and Works, Volume II Haydn at Esterháza 1766-1790, p. 719. Robbins Landon: The Collected Correspondence and London Notebooks of Joseph Haydn, pp. 84-85 and 326. "Haydn's compositional activity underwent a radical change in the 1780s. Even the string quartet was subject to another pause of six years... before he composed three sets in rapid succession during 1787-90: op.50 (Artaria; dedicated to the King of Prussia), op. 54/55 (a single set of six, sold to Johann Tost, formerly a violinist at court, who resold them to various publishers) and op. 64." James Webster and Georg Feder in Grove Music Online. Haydn also sold his Symphonies nos. 88 and 89 (1787) to Tost, who resold them in Paris and elsewhere. "With this letter, the affaire Tost, to which Haydn had previousy referred in a letter to Artaria... [September 22, 1788], becomes even more mysterious. Tost had with him Symphonies Nos. 88, 89 and six Quartets (known as Opp. 54 and 55). Haydn never denied Tost's rights to these works, and obviously expected Tost to sell them, as the end of the present letter shows. But how the two Symphonies suddently became four is most unclear. Perhaps Haydn intended to write two more for Tost. (See also the passing reference to the four works in the letter of 22 March...). In 1788 and 1789, Haydn did in fact compose three new Symphonies (Nos. 90-92), but he dedicated them to the Comte d'Ogny in Paris, and they were patently intended for the Concert de la Loge Olympique, for which he had written the 'Paris' Symphonies. The affaire Tost is further complicated by the fact that Tost seems to have sold Sieber a Gyrowetz Symphony under Haydn's name (Symphony in G: see Larsen, HÜB, p. 115 and Landon, SYM, p. 3). The six Sonatas are possibly Nos. 34, 53 and 35 (XVI: 33, 34 and 43) together with 54-56 (XVI: 40-42); three, however may have been Nos. 32, 29 and 31 (XVI: 44-46), earlier works which Artaria issued as Op. 54 about this time." Robbins Landon: Haydn Chronicle and Works, Volume II, p. 719. Provenance This letter was purchased from the London antiquarian booksellers Maggs Bros. in ca. 1930 and has been in the present owner's family since that time. Haydn autograph letters with important content such as that contained in the present letter are rare to the market.. 2 pp. He asks in closing "will the Quartet, and the 2 Symphonies be engraved and soon appear?" "Monsieur! Meanwhile I remain, most respectfully, Your wholly obedient servant, Josephus Haydn." Uniform light browning, slightly heavier to central fold and extreme blank margins; one small brown spot to central fold; small (ca. 28 x 20 mm.) blank area opposite seal lacking, partially adhering to upper portion of seal; several minute holes, just touching several letters but in no way impairing legibility. In very good condition overall. Carefully laid into archival Japanese rice paper mount.
