[LIKELY FANTASTIC RELIC FROM BURGOYNE'S ARMY, SIGNED BY A BRITISH POW FROM THE 21ST REGIMENT WHOM SURRENDERED AT THE BATTLE OF SARATOGA] The British negociator, or, Foreign exchanges made perfectly easy : containing tables for all the various courses of exchange ... together with tables and rules for exchanges ... also, arbitrations of exchanges ... likewise, the weights and measures of foreign nations London Printed for M. Richardson, and L. Hawes and Co., and T. Slack 1765 --o0o-- A fantastic story lies between the covers of this little book! told by its content as well as its signatures, the book traveled from a British soldier's hands into American hands during the turning point of the American Revolution, the surrender of Gen John Burgoyne at Saratoga! Signed by a G. E. Schlagel, 21st Regt on the ffep, research shows that a George Edward Schlagel was captured as part of the 21st Regiment of Foot whom was under Burgoyne at Saratoga. It was quite common for soldiers to carry currency books/ exchange tables while serving in various worldwide military engagements to help with monetary transactions, which was likely the case here. Printed in 1765, Schlagel probably brought this from England to the colonial uprising and in fact lost it upon his capture at Saratoga. The book is signed again by Schlagel on the title, and also has a similar period stamp of a J. Wright in red at the crown of the page, perhaps an American soldier whom decided to keep the book as a war trophy of sorts. Truly a rare and important find, purchased at a Virginia auction, likely its home for the span f … [Click Below for Full Description]

Condition: Like New. American Counter-revolution in Favor of Liberty : How Americans Resisted Modern State, 1765-1850, Hardcover by Jankovic, Ivan, ISBN 3030037320, ISBN-13 9783030037321 This book presents the case that the origins of American liberty should not be sought in the constitutional-reformist feats of its "statesmen" during the 1780s, but rather in the political and social resistance to their efforts. There were two revolutions occurring in the late 18th century America: the modern European revolution "in favour of government," pursuing national unity, "energetic" government and centralization of power (what scholars usually dub "American founding"); and a conservative, reactionary counter-revolution "in favour of liberty," defending local rights and liberal individualism against the encroaching political authority. This is a book about this liberal counter-revolution and its ideological, political and cultural sources and central protagonists. The central analytical argument of the book is that America before the Revolution was a stateless, spontaneous political order that evolved culturally, politically and economically in isolation from the modern European trends of state-building and centralization of power. The book argues, then, that a better model for understanding America is a "decoupled modernization" hypothesis, in which social modernity is divested from the politics of modern state and tied with the pre-modern social institutions.

(Bibliophilie) [BOLLIOUD DE MERMET (Louis)].
Amsterdam, et à Lyon, Pierre Duplain l'Aîné, 1765, XVI-125 pp. ; (suivi de). -2) De la bibliomanie. La Haie, 1765, 111-(1) pp. ; soit 2 ouvrages en 1 vol. in-8 ; demi-veau glacé (vers 1840). -Bel exemplaire. WHYTT, M.D. F.R.S., Robert. Observations on the Nature, Causes, and Cure of Those Disorders which have been Commonly called Nervous Hypochondriac, or Hysteric, To which are prefixed some Remarks on the Sympathy of the Nerves. Edinburgh: Printed for T. Becket, and P. Du Hondt, and J. Balfour, 1765. First edition. Octavo (7 15/16 x 4 3/4 inches; 202 x 121 mm). viii, [8], 520 pp. Contemporary full calf. Boards ruled in gilt. Spine elaborately stamped in gilt with tan spine label, lettered in blind. All edges speckled red. Hinges cracked but firm. Spine chipped at head and tail. Corners and edges a bit rubbed and bumped. Back board with a few chips. Sporadic dampstaining along top margin. Final few leaves and endpapers with some toning and staining. Overall very good. "Whytt's interest in the sensibility and co-ordination of the nerves led to a major work on nervous diseases in 1764. It has been suggested that this work helped to make 'nervous disease' a fashionable term, replacing 'the vapours'--a remnant of humoral pathology. Whytt's doctrine was that the part of the soul resident in the sensory nerves was so bound by the laws of union of body and soul that it allowed each nerve to transmit only its own kind of stimulus to the brain and spinal cord. Here the soul, acting as a kind of common sensory agent, redirected the stimulus to appropriate motor nerves. This accounted for the 'sympathy' of the parts of the body, many of them later recognized to be under the control of the sympathetic nervous system." (Oxford Dictionary of National Biography). Henry Timberlake
London: Printed for the Author, 1765. FIRST EDITION. viii, 160pp. plus folding plate and facsimile of folding map. Period full calf leather with gilted spine label. Housed in a custom clamshell box with leather label on spine. Internally clean. Near fine. Timberlake was a British officer who spent considerable time with the Cherokees in Georgia and eastern Tennessee in the early 1760s, during the turbulent period of frontier strife at the end of the French and Indian War. He later accompanied a delegation of Cherokees to London. His account, here in the first edition, is one of the best of the period, and one of the few accounts of the war with the Cherokees in the southern colonies. The map (provided in facsimile in this copy) is an important cartographic work in its own right. The folding plate is "A Curious secret Journal taken by the Indians out of the Pocket of a French Officer they had kill'd." "May very well be considered the Number One book in any Tennessee library, since it is the first book ever written concerning activities in the area now embraced in this state" - Horn. "Represents the earliest and one of the historically significant works relative to the Cherokee Indians and their activities.in original condition, ranks as a most desirable rare Tennessee book" - Allen. Bound in eighteenth century calf boards, re-spined, probably at some point in the mid-twentieth century, with marbled edges to the text blocks and marbled endpapers. Some volumes have suffered worse water or damp damage than others, vol VIII has signs to the bottom half of most pages, some more so than others, and there is damage to the bottom of the front pastedown and endpaper, Vol VII is similar, Vol VI is slightly better but still with signs of damage throughout, Vol V has fared much better and Vols I IV are reasonably free from water damage. There are pencil notes to the texts of some volumes. The bindings are reasonably firm with no loose pages. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Henry Earl of Clarendon
Oxford; Dublin: Clarendon Press, 1765. Scarce. Letters include correspondence to King James II, the Lord Treasurer, Lord Sunderland and the Bishop of Downe and Connor. The lengthy preface to Volume I begins to indicate the purpose of the publication to be the Earl's attempt to clarify the events in Ireland. During his time in Ireland, the Earl struggled to establish authority and hold on to his office due to the commander-in-chief, The Earl of Tyrconnell. He was also a key figure in the in the king's intention to introduce Roman Catholics into the Irish judicial and administrative system, as well as into the army. CONDITION Rebound in half-calf bindings. Externally sound with rubbing to head and tail of spine, front board corners and slight wear to rear board. Strained hinges to Vol. I have been reinforced with cloth tape on both volumes. Internally, firmly bound with foxing to the pages of Vol. I otherwise bright and clean with occasional handling marks. François-André Philidor (1726-1795) was not only the most powerful chess player of his day and, for a time and its unofficial world champion, he was also a musician and composer of over 20 comic operas, which, though now rarely performed, enjoyed a notable success at the time and are still occasionally recorded. One of his most popular operas was Le Sorcier (1764), which appears here bound with songs excerpted from two others of his works, in the company of pieces by two of his contemporaries, Egidio Duni and Rober Desbrosses. All are rare in institutions; on the market, they are virtually non-existent. [Bound with the following titles, all octavo, all entirely engraved:] -- PHILIDOR. Ariettes du Jardinier et son seigneur. FIRST EDITION. G&M 3424.2: "Probably the greatest English classic of colon-rectal surgery. Pott recommended the practice of simple division rather than the newer, more complicated methods proposed by Cheselden and Le Dran, and audaciously pointed out that there were lessons which regular practitioners might learn from quacks apropos of this subject." WHYTT, Robert.
FIRST EDITION. G&M 4841. "The first important English work on neurology after Willis" (McHenry). The Observations "reveals great clinical acumen and provides vivid accounts of a wide range of neurological and psychiatric patients whom Whytt attended at the Royal Infirmary. He declared that disorders variously called flatulent, spasmodic, hypochondriac, hysteric, and more recently, nervous, had become the wastebasket diagnosis for those conditions about which physicians were ignorant; and therefore he set out 'to wipe off this reproach' and to throw some light on these ailments. He resorted to his previous work to explain the nature of these diseases, emphasizing the 'sentient and sympathetic power of the nerves', and described instances of referred pain -- anticipating, by his explanation of the causes, modern demonstrations of the reasons for them. Whytt clarified Thomas Willis's term 'nervous', already in use for over 100 years, and explained such physical phenomena as blushing, lacrimation, and sweating, brought on by emotion or passion, as owing to some change made in the brain or nerves by the mind or sentient principle. This work added significant contributions to scientific medicine" (DSB). See Comrie, History of Scottish Medicine, pp. 307-309.

HERDER, Johann Gottfried].
2 vols, 8vo (156 × 92 mm), pp. 335, [1]; 36, 315, [1]; complete with the preface to vol. II, often lacking; one small hole to the title of vol. I (natural paper flaw) and an old repair to the title verso in vol. II; some light offsetting; still a good copy in early nineteenth-century marbled boards, extremities rubbed, paper spine labels lettered gilt, spines slightly chipped. First edition of an anthology of ‘northern’ ballads, collected and, where necessary, translated into German by Herder. German interest in folksongs began in the middle of the eighteenth century, stoked in no small part by the Europe-wide mania for Ossian. Thomas Percy’s influential Reliques of Ancient English Poetry (1765) was also much admired, and Herder, who had been sent a copy by Rudolf Erich Raspe (of Munchausen fame) in August 1771, the same month Herder wrote the first draft of his essay Über Ossian und die Lieder alter Völker, responded to calls for a German Percy. In 1773, he began translating sections of the Reliques and collecting other North European folksongs for a collection of ‘Alte Volkslieder, englisch und deutsch zusammen’ which, though sent to the press, on account of numerous errors by the printer was never published. In 1777, Herder returned to the project, and the first volume, now titled simply Volkslieder, appeared the following year. A glance at the contents pages reveals the extraordinary range of the originals—Lithuanian, Spanish, Swiss, Danish, Skaldic, Morlach, Greek, Estonian, Lapp, Latvian, Greenlandic—but as Percy’s Reliques was the impetus, most come from English and … [Click Below for Full Description]

MANUSCRIT] VERON
[Click Below for Full Description]

The folding plate is "A Curious secret Journal taken by the Indians out of the Pocket of a French Officer they had kill'd." Derde Druk [Bound with:] Reize naer de Zuidzee, met het Schip de Wager, ... ondernomen in den Jaere 1740.', by: George Anson. Great Britain was at war with Spain in 1740. Admiral of the Fleet George Anson, 1st Baron Anson PC, FRS, RN (1697 -1762) was a British admiral and a wealthy aristocrat, noted for his circumnavigation of the globe and his role overseeing the Royal Navy during the Seven Years' War. Anson commanded the small British squadron sent at the beginning of the war with Spain to harass the Spaniards on the west coast of South America and cut off their supplies of wealth from the Pacific. Disasters and hardships plagued the expedition; most of the ships were lost around Cape Horn, and on the Chilean coast, and of a crew of 960, less than 350 survived. Eventually the Centurion alone was left, but Anson persevered and succeeded in capturing a gold-laden Spanish galleon near Manila. The prize he earned as a result settled his fortune for life. This is the official account of his voyage of circumnavigation, compiled from Anson's journals by Richard Walter, chaplain on board the Centurion, and revised by Benjamin Robins. Artists and Engravers: Author(s): George Anson. George Anson, 1st Baron Anson (Staffordshire, 1697 - 1762, Moor Park) was an Admiral of the Britis … [Click Below for Full Description]

This Chronicle of Venice was written in the early eleventh century, and its composition is generally attributed to Ioannes Diaconus. The Chronicon was edited by Girolamo Francesco Zanetti (1723-1782) on the basis of a manuscript then in the possession of the Venetian scholar Apostolo Zeno (1669-1750), whose textual version was collated with two codices preserved in the Vatican Library. The work enjoyed lasting popularity; counting among its legacy of readers was the especially noteworthy English critic and writer John Ruskin (1819-1900), who referenced the Chronicon Venetum in his celebrated work on Venetian art and architecture, The Stones of Venice, which first appeared in 1851.Cicogna 583; B.
