Jenyns, Soame]
London: Printed for J. Wilkie, 1765. 23pp. Modern blue three-quarter calf and marbled boards, spine gilt. Minor soiling. Very good plus. In a blue half morocco and cloth folder. Second edition, printed the same year as the first, of this defense of the Stamp Act. Jenyns, a poet and member of Parliament, argues in favor of the right to tax the colonists and rejects various claims against British taxation. In a rather condescending tone Jenyns calls the arguments against the right to tax the colonists insolent and absurd. The pamphlet produced several strong responses by colonial sympathizers, including James Otis' CONSIDERATIONS ON BEHALF OF THE COLONISTS, also printed in 1765. SABIN 36053. HOWES J103. HOBART, Noah
New-Haven Conneticut: B. Mecom, 1765. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Noah Hobart was an early American historian who was concerned with the troubles abounding with the church in the Colonies, specifically Connecticut. He wrote a treatise concerning the state of the ecclesiastical constitution regarding civil policies. He states that, "the great difficulty is to fix the balance between authority and liberty." He continues, "Authority is apt to degenerate into Tyranny, and Liberty into Licentiousness and confusion." His point was that he saw that the church constitutions were the perfect medium between extremes.

William SMELLIE
Paris: 1765. [Click Below for Full Description]

The English believed at the time that the Isle of Jersey derived its name from Caesarea, named in honor of the Roman Caesar. In the mid-eighteenth century, Quaker merchant Samuel Smith gathered information and documents to prepare the first history of the colony from its first settlement to the year 1721 with some details on its current condition when he published his history in 1765.Publisher James Parker had served in an indenture to a printer in New … [Click Below for Full Description]

Birmingham: John Baskerville, 1765. Eighth (first Baskerville) edition in English, (first published Aberdeen, 1676); 4to, pp. [14], [ii]-xiii, 504, [16]; with the errata leaf as part of the preliminaries which is "frequently missing" (Gaskell); original blue paper-covered boards, uncut and partially unopened; neat cream paper rebacking, preserving the original printed paper label, in a red half morocco clamshell box (scuffed); a very good, sound copy. This copy with a very nice inscription: "David Barclay / Grandson of the Author / to Lord Sidney. / In testimony of his respect. / 1789." Thomas Townshend, 1st Viscount Sydney PC (1733-1800), was a British politician who held several important Cabinet posts in the second half of the 18th century. His most enduring legacy is probably that the cities of Sydney in Nova Scotia, and Sydney in Australia were named in his honor, in 1785 and 1788 respectively. Gaskell notes that "no uncut copy has been seen." This copy is uncut and partially unopened. The errata leaf in this copy is on wove paper without an imprint, and was likely printed by Baskerville himself. "Barclay's great book, The Apology, is remarkable as the standard exposition of the principles of his sect, and is not only the first defense of those principles by a man of trained intelligence, but in many respects one of the most impressive theological writings of the century" (DNB). The first edition thus, first issue, with Corbett listed as the second booksellers, Johnson's preface unpaginated and other prefatory matter paginated [i]-ciii. ESTC Citation No. T138601. Eight volumes, with half titles to volumes three to eight. Lacking half titles to volumes one and two. A scarce and important edition. The first edition edited by Samuel Johnson and George Steevens. With a frontispiece of the author to volume one. Johnson announced his intention to edit Shakespeare's works following on from his 1745 work 'Miscellaneous Observations on Macbeth'. In 1756, Johnson published a full Proposal, shortly after signing a contract to edit an eight volume set of Shakespeare's works, including a preface. Within the Proposal, Johnson offered subscriptions for his future edition for two guineas, with one guinea to be paid up front and the other to be paid upon second printing. With this ambitious set, Johnson aimed to correct the problems which he saw with previous editions of the works, using the earliest copies of the original work he was able to find in order to stay as true as possible to the original text. However, he also saw the benefit in using the positive aspects of later editions. The work took significantly longer to complete than originally planned, with the work finally being publishe … [Click Below for Full Description]

TAYLOR, Isaac
Jan. 1st, 1765., Ross-on-Wye. The first large-scale map of Dorset Folio (560 by 390mm), key map, large-scale engraved map on six sheets, key sheet in original outline colour, large-scale map in original full-wash colour, later half-calf over marbled paper boards. Isaac Taylor was born in Worcester in 1730 and earned an early reputation as a surveyor of both county maps and city plans. His style was easily recognisable and gave particular emphasis to the hills on his county maps; Herefordshire 1754, Hampshire 1759, Dorset 1765, Worcestershire 1772, and Gloucestershire 1777. It is surprising that Taylor, like Rocque and Jefferys, was not successful in gaining the approval of the Society of Arts who appeared to favour the amateur surveyors rather than the professional mapmakers, Nearly all the awards went to applicants who produced just one or two maps rather than men like Taylor and Jefferys who between them published fifteen fine large-scale map, accurately surveyed and well engraved and in some instances more competent than most of those that were recognised by the Society. The title and dedication cartouches on the Dorset map are combined in a large decorative title-piece taking up most of the bottom left-hand sheet. Although the map is mainly dedicated to the Earl of Shaftesbury, Lord Lieutenant of Dorset, Taylor also includes the names of twenty-three local gentlemen "in Gratitude for their generous assistance in this Work". The corner of the bottom right-hand sheet contains the "list of Characters" giving the symbols for "Parish Churches and Chapels, Old Foundations, de … [Click Below for Full Description]

By George Alexander Stevens London: For J. Pridden, [1765]. A loose gathering of disbound (formerly) stitched folded sheets. Measures approx. 11-3/4 x 7-3/4 inches; 9, (1) pages. Illustrated with engraved frontis. Generally cited as the first English comic monologue, this is an early (first?) folio edition from the first year of publication of what would become an oft-printed, comic staple of 18th century theater. Stevens was an actor and author of a libertine bent, who scored a huge success with this parody of an academic lecture on physiognomy, propped with fifty-one papier mache heads. He played it throughout his career, touring England, Ireland and America, and it was widely imitated and reprinted into the 19th century. The frontispiece details Steven's stage presentation, showing him before his collection of exemplary heads. A rare publication - of this edition, ESTC locates the BL copy only, stating in error "first published... in 1764," but failing to record any such edition, and indeed none exists with that date. A total of four of these folio editions printed in double columns were issued by Pridden, two undated, including this edition, which may well be the first such, and two from 1766. Pages are evenly toned and lightly soiled, with (presumably)18th century pen and pencil notes and corrections naming various performers. 1765 date is also penned on front page.
