LA RUE, Jean Baptiste de.
BAL 1765; not in Berlin Kat.; Fowler; Millard; Vagnetti. Second issue of the first edition (1728) of "the most accurate and complete work on the subject of stone-cutting for building" (BAL). An abundantly and clearly illustrated manual on cutting stone for architectural construction, with meticulously detailed instructions. The main text is divided into five parts covering doorways and entry vaults, other vaults, pendentives (sections of domes), rampant (asymmetrical) arches and spiral stairs. All five parts are extensively illustrated, mostly with one or two plates for every chapter, in total 120 full-page plates and 1 large folding plate (plate size 47.5 x 61 cm) showing plans, cross-sections and views of gates, doorways, halls, tunnels, vaults, domes, corridors, niches, windows, staircases, etc. along with some measuring tools. The present copy is said to be on large-paper: it is in any case about the same size as the BAL copy, giving it generous margins. With an 18th-century manuscript bookplate, partly torn away. The large folding plate is somewhat browned and tattered, with small tears around the edges (1 running into the image and 2 crudely repaired with tape, mostly in the margins), a couple text leaves are also browned, an occasional further plate or text leaf shows minor, mostly marginal browning or spots and the last few leaves have a marginal restoration in the upper outside corner, but the book is otherwise in good condition. The binding has been rebacked and the flaking leather stabilized, but most of the gold-tooled spine is clear and the book is now structur … [Click Below for Full Description]

CORBRIDGE, James
London,: Printed for T. Bowles in St Paul's Church Yard, John Bowles in Cornhill, and Robert Sayer at the Golden Buck in Fleet Stree, 1765. London,: Printed for T. Bowles in St Paul's Church Yard, John Bowles in Cornhill, and Robert Sayer at the Golden Buck in Fleet Street,, [c1765].. Engraved map, dissected and mounted on linen. James Corbridge was a surveyor in Norwich in the first half of the eighteenth century. He produced numerous estate plans but is best known for his large scale maps of Norfolk, Norwich and Great Yarmouth. His career began in Newcastle and amongst his early work is the first plan of the town. In the early 1720s he moved to Norwich and in 1730 he published his great large scale map of the county of Norfolk, the first to be printed. In 1735 he published this large single sheet reduction complete with extensive lists of the towns and villages in the county in surrounding panels. Each is keyed to the map and has their Hundred identified along with the distance in miles from Norwich. Circles of distance from Kings Lynn and Norwich radiate the map. The coastline is decorated with ornate images of seven boats and ships. Top centre can be found Corbridge's dedication to Baron Walpole. The map is engraved to the scale of three miles to the inch, each grid marking three miles. The year after the publication of the larger map Thomas Goddard and William Chase published a pirated copy. In this reduction by Corbridge he could not resist having a go at them about the scale of miles stating lower right ‘I refer them to Mr. Chase and his Map (if they doubt my Scale … [Click Below for Full Description]

Andrew Wakely's 'Mariner's Compass' is an important navigational book intended to be an aid to voyagers and assist in navigation. Its popularity rose to prominence when it was used by the Royal Navy, particularly for its accurate longitude and latitudinal tables. Other tables and illustrations included directional aids, time calculations, and how to accurate read compasses. Wakely developed this book shortly after the British suffered significant sea losses to the Dutch in the Anglo-Dutch Wars. [Attributes: First Edition]

Shakespeare, William
J. & R. Tonson, 1765. First variorum edition of Shakespeare "and the foundation of hundreds of subsequent issues" (Jaggard); first Johnson edition, without the names of Longman and Corbet in the imprint, and with Johnson's Preface unpaginated; 8 volumes, 8vo, engraved portrait frontispiece of the bard in vol. 1 by George Virtue (after Droeshout, according to Fleeman; after Chandos according to Jaggard and Courtney & Smith), full contemporary calf neatly rebacked, black morocco labels on spines; very good. "By the time the edition appeared in 1765 Johnson had been working on it, on and off, for twenty years ... His most important preliminary work was the Dictionary. In the late 1740s Johnson read the complete works of Shakespeare in Warburton's 1747 edition, and marked out over 20,000 words, the meanings of which he found well illustrated in their Shakespearean contexts. Johnson says in the Preface to the Dictionary that he took 'the diction of common life' from Shakespeare; by arranging it and defining it, Johnson gave us, according to Bertrant Bronson, 'a diffused and unheralded [but] major work of Shakespearean scholarship'. The edition of Shakespeare is not merely a spin-off from the Dictionary, but it belongs to the same series of projects on the history of learning - some completed and some only planned - that runs throughout Johnson's life from the proposed edition of Poliziano and the translation of Paolo Sarpi, through the Harleian Catalogue and the Dictionary, to Shakespeare and the Lives of the Poets" (DeMaria, pp. 218-19). This edition includes the first printing … [Click Below for Full Description]

Barclay, Robert
John Baskerville, 1765. Eighth (first Baskerville) edition in English, (first published Aberdeen, 1676); 4to, pp. [14], [ii]-xiii, 504, [16]; with the errata leaf as part of the preliminaries which is "frequently missing" (Gaskell); original blue paper-covered boards, uncut and partially unopened; neat cream paper rebacking, preserving the original printed paper label, in a red half morocco clamshell box (scuffed); a very good, sound copy. This copy with a very nice inscription: "David Barclay / Grandson of the Author / to Lord Sidney. / In testimony of his respect. / 1789." Thomas Townshend, 1st Viscount Sydney PC (1733-1800), was a British politician who held several important Cabinet posts in the second half of the 18th century. His most enduring legacy is probably that the cities of Sydney in Nova Scotia, and Sydney in Australia were named in his honor, in 1785 and 1788 respectively. Gaskell notes that "no uncut copy has been seen." This copy is uncut and partially unopened. The errata leaf in this copy is on wove paper without an imprint, and was likely printed by Baskerville himself. "Barclay's great book, The Apology, is remarkable as the standard exposition of the principles of his sect, and is not only the first defense of those principles by a man of trained intelligence, but in many respects one of the most impressive theological writings of the century" (DNB). Gaskell 30.

1765. SEE BELOW. The Celebrated Lecture on Heads; Which has been exhibited upwards of one hundred successive nights to crowded audiences and met with the most universal applause. By George Alexander Stevens London: For J. Pridden, [1765]. A loose gathering of disbound (formerly) stitched folded sheets. Measures approx. 11-3/4 x 7-3/4 inches; 9, (1) pages. Illustrated with engraved frontis. Generally cited as the first English comic monologue, this is an early (first?) folio edition from the first year of publication of what would become an oft-printed, comic staple of 18th century theater. Stevens was an actor and author of a libertine bent, who scored a huge success with this parody of an academic lecture on physiognomy, propped with fifty-one papier mache heads. He played it throughout his career, touring England, Ireland and America, and it was widely imitated and reprinted into the 19th century. The frontispiece details Steven's stage presentation, showing him before his collection of exemplary heads. A rare publication - of this edition, ESTC locates the BL copy only, stating in error "first published... in 1764," but failing to record any such edition, and indeed none exists with that date. A total of four of these folio editions printed in double columns were issued by Pridden, two undated, including this edition, which may well be the first such, and two from 1766. Pages are evenly toned and lightly soiled, with (presumably)18th century pen and pencil notes and corrections naming various performers. 1765 date is also penned on front page. Engraved plate appears trim … [Click Below for Full Description]

Edinburgh: Printed for T. Becket, and P. Du Hondt, and J. Balfour, 1765. First edition. Octavo (7 15/16 x 4 3/4 inches; 202 x 121 mm). viii, [8], 520 pp. Contemporary full calf. Boards ruled in gilt. Spine elaborately stamped in gilt with tan spine label, lettered in blind. All edges speckled red. Hinges cracked but firm. Spine chipped at head and tail. Corners and edges a bit rubbed and bumped. Back board with a few chips. Sporadic dampstaining along top margin. Final few leaves and endpapers with some toning and staining. Overall very good. "Whytt's interest in the sensibility and co-ordination of the nerves led to a major work on nervous diseases in 1764. It has been suggested that this work helped to make 'nervous disease' a fashionable term, replacing 'the vapours'--a remnant of humoral pathology. Whytt's doctrine was that the part of the soul resident in the sensory nerves was so bound by the laws of union of body and soul that it allowed each nerve to transmit only its own kind of stimulus to the brain and spinal cord. Here the soul, acting as a kind of common sensory agent, redirected the stimulus to appropriate motor nerves. This accounted for the 'sympathy' of the parts of the body, many of them later recognized to be under the control of the sympathetic nervous system." (Oxford Dictionary of National Biography). Tirso de Molina (Gabriel Téllez)
Madrid: Antonio Marin. Published 1765, 2 volumes bound in one, in recent flame calf with black gilt title label, (16) 502 (8) 372 pp, text block seems slightly trimmed all the way around, the first title page has some stains to it, but a lovely copy of this rare book, a mix of prose and poetry. The author, now thought as one of the greatest playwrights of baroque Spain, flourished in the mid 17th century, writing poetry, dramas, short stories, etc., notable for the inclusion of many female protagonists and his frank exploration of sexuality. Very Good.

GÖBL, Andreas Benedikt:
München. Baierische Hochzeit. Coloured woodcut. Munich, Andreas Benedict Göbl, n.d. (1765). 78/78 playing cards. 111 x 58mm. Contemporary slipcase. Very good condition. The most beautiful of Göbl's Tarot games. The game was published on the occasion of the disastrous marriage of Emperor Joseph II with Maria Josefa of Bavaria, forced by Empress Maria Theresa in 1765. Maria Josefa was a daughter of the Bavarian Elector Karl Albrecht and Maria Amalie, a daughter of Emperor Joseph I. She is described as less attractive and witty, but was considered as warm and good-natured. She tried in vain to win the affection of Joseph II, but was consistently ignored by him. The marriage was probably never consummated. Maria Josefa got an humiliating position at the Viennese court and died only 2 years later, when a smallpox epidemic affected many members of the Maria Theresa family. The 21 tarots represent the procession, which was held on the occasion of the marriage. The wedding loader rides ahead followed by the hosts in the first carriage and the bridal couple in the second carriage. Following the pastor with his wife, and further noblemen costumed as gypsies, huntsmen and farmers. After the procession the members of the elctoral court hold a banquet.
