GUERINEAU DE SAINT-PERAVI, J.N.M.].
A Londres [Paris], Rey 1765. Octavo contemporary mottled calf (tips worn, front hinge cracked but holding); iv,176;[2],263pp. In two parts, each with a title page. Though I've seen this referred to as a reprint of the more elaborately titled 'L'Optique, ou le Chinois a Memphis ." (1763) I'd be willing to bet that these are the first edition sheets with new title pages. I'll bet this book (and before you take the bet be aware that all the mistakes in pagination are identical). The Chinese traveller in the west is a neat enough conjunction of a number of fashions and Guerineau has tacked together a few in this oriental imaginary voyage cum utopian social satire. GUETTARD, Jean Étienne
23 pp. Large 4to, orig. marbled wrappers bound in later cloth. Paris: de l'Imprimerie Royale, 1765. First separate edition, an offprint with new pagination. Guettard (1715-86), who served as curator of Réaumur's natural history collections, was elected to the Académie Royale des Sciences as an adjoint botaniste. He is most famous for his discovery of the volcanic nature of the Auvergne and his attempt to construct a geological map of France in collaboration with Lavoisier. Guettard played an important role in the development of the porcelain industry in France. About 1750 the Duc d'Orléans founded a laboratory, under the direction of Guettard, in order to discover the art of making hard or Chinese porcelain. Having examined samples of the rare materials sent from China, Guettard determined that kaolin and petuntse near Alençon could be used. In the present work, Guettard describes his findings. The discovery of kaolin in France enabled the porcelain industry to finally successfully replicate the hard-paste porcelains of China which had for centuries been considered the finest in the world. This great discovery led to the enormous development of the porcelain industries of both Limoges and Sèvres. A year later, Brancas (1733-1824), Comte de Lauraguais, scientist and Academician, disputed the claims of Guettard regarding the discovery of kaolin, in his Observations sur le Mémoire de M. Guettard concernant la Porcelaine. Brancas claimed that he was the first, in 1758, to make French hard-paste, also using kaolin from Alençon. Tipped-in is a one-page autograph by Guettard regar … [Click Below for Full Description]

Cheyne, George.
1765. Large 4to. XII, 337, (1) pp. With woodcut title vignette and heraldic woodcut on last f. verso. Later marbled half calf with gilt-stamped title to spine; new marbled endpapers. Top edge coloured in red. First and only Italian edition of George Cheyne's final work (1742), translated by a Florentine physician who attests to Cheyne's enormous popularity in England and addends a brief life of the celebrated doctor to the work. At the same time as Newton's geophysical ideas were being introduced into Italy (against some opposition!), the present work would indicate that Newtonian medicine (of the Edinburgh school) was also in circulation. - The present translation is dedicated to the Venetian Ambassador in London, Lorenzo Morosini, who during his residence "has had leisure to observe the great strides in Medical Science in that country". Most striking are Mei's repeated references to Cheyne as "one of the greatest modern luminaries of the Medical Arts, standing alongside Hippocrates amongst the ancients and the great Sydenham amongst the moderns". - George Cheyne (1671/2-1743) became one of the most prominent defenders of the Newtonian system of medicine in Edinburgh before moving to London in 1701. He was decidedly unsuccessful as a physician in his earlier years, and retreated to Aberdeen in 1705. "Little is known about the period between 1705, when Cheyne suffered his collapse, and 1715, when he re-emerged to the public..." (DNB). However, several of his later works proved immensely popular, among these the present one; according to the DNB the Natural Method "gives the … [Click Below for Full Description]

Trew, Christoph Jacob
- Augsburg, J. J. Haid, ca. 1765. Mezzotint printed on a single sheet (51.0 x 34.7 cm). Verso blank. Printed surface 40.5 x 27.5 cm. Framed. Frame size 55.0 x 39.8 cm.l A very nice portrait of the famous German botanist Christoph Jacob Trew [1695-1769), from his largest and most important work, the "Plantae Selectae". This was published between 1750 and 1773. The artist (and publisher), Johann Jacob Haid (1704-1767) ". came from a German family of artists and engravers and was known for large mezzotint portraits" (Wikipedia). This is a very fine example of his work. The engraving reports both the day of birth and death of Trew. As Haid died earlier, the caption (in a cartouche) was probably partly (re) engraved later. Some very light, marginal foxing, otherwise a very good, clean copy.

Cat, [C. N.] Le
Berlin, [Académie royale des sciences et belles lettres de Berlin], 1765. 8vo (20.2 x 12.2 cm). Half-title, title in red and black, [iv], 332 pp., two engraved head pieces, six large, folded, engraved plates. Contemporary half calf over speckled boards. Spine with five raised bands with gilt-stippled lines and black morocco label with gilt title. Edges sprinkled red. Important work with new and original research on the nerve system by the French naturalist, surgeon and anatomist Claude-Nicolas Le Cat (1700-1768). He founded the Académie des Sciences, Belles lettres et Arts in Rouen, and developed an instrument for lithotomy, the gorgeret cystotome. Le Cat deserves credit for the first removal of a bladder polyp through the dilated urethra. He also greatly advanced cataract surgery. His reputation in France and Europe was reflected in his numerous academy prizes, publications, and surgical notoriety (Wikipedia). Small, vague, oval blindstamp of a former private owner in the top margin of the front free endpaper; some rubbing to the edges and spine; a few small, marginal spots; generally clean. A very good copy. Bayle & Thillaye II, p. 298. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
