Rousseau, Jean-Jacques, Jacob Vernes, et al.
La Haye (The Hague): Frederic Staatman, 1765. FIRST AND ONLY EDITION of this very rare collection of letters to and from Rousseau, and of works by and about Rousseau, many of which were considered scandalous (which explains why this collection was published in the Hague). 8, 200, 12, 24, 48, 11 pp. Staatman, the publisher, thought up the idea of selling this book under two different titles. He printed two title-pages and two prefaces. There is also an "Avis aux libraires", advising booksellers that, if someone asks for the "Recueil contre M. Rousseau", he (t … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Album amicorum]
Oblong 8vo. 85 ff. (partly written on both sides). No binding. This friendship album kept by the travelling student Mihály Pap contains mainly Latin, Greek, Hebrew, and German entries, beginning in 1765 with numerous contributions from Swiss cities (Bern, Lausanne, Zurich); in the later 1760s, he collects entries mainly from German cities (Worms, Regensburg, Nuremberg, Marburg, Duisburg, etc.) as well as from London and Oxford. Somewhat curiously, although the album contains several entries from Göttingen, there is no contribution by the historian August Ludwig von Schlözer, the unrivalled star teacher for the many Hungarian exiles educated at the Georg August University. - Somewhat browned and wrinkled; some pages with slight edge defects. "Most of Percy's contemporaries welcomed the Reliques as a powerful blast of fresh air. 'Poetry has been absolutely redeemed by it', wrote Wordsworth ('Essay supplementary to the preface', Lyrical Ballads, 1815, 3, 75). Several generations of poets felt its influence: Blake, Coleridge, Keats, Rossetti, Morris, Swinburne, and many lesser lights. Scott, both as novelist and ballad-editor, owed a debt to the book, as did figures such as Bürger, Herder … [Click Below for Full Description]

Anville d Jean Babtiste (1697 - 1782) Paris

On inset map the Bosporus and partly Greece with the islands Lesbos and Dardania.; - vita of the artist: Jean Baptiste Bourguignon d'Anville (1697 ?1782), was both a geographer and cartographer who greatly improved the standards of map-making. His maps of ancient geography, characterized by careful, accurate work and based largely on original research, are especially valuable. He left unknown areas of continents blank and noted doubtful information as such; compared to the lavish maps of his predecessors, his maps looked empty. His first serious map, that of Ancient Greece, was published when he was fifteen. At the age of twenty-two, he was appointed one the king's geographers, and began to attract the attention of first authorities. D'Anville's studies embraced everything of geographical nature in the world's literature, as far as he could muster it: for this purpose, he not only searched ancient and modern historians, travelers and narrators of every description, but also poets, orators and philosophers. One of his cherished subjects was to reform geography by putting an end to the blind copying of older maps, by testing the commonly accepted positions of places through a rigorous examination of all the descriptive authority, and by excluding from cartography every name inadequately supported. Vast spaces, which had before
