Original engraving. Optical view highlighted in watercolor, representing a view of the fireworks shot in Green Park, London in celebration of peace in 1763 Optical views, also called views, perspectives or "mondo nuovo", are engravings very fashionable between the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century. They were intended to be observed through a set of several mirrors or by means of a Zygrascope, instrument consisting of a mirror and a lens. Optical views can be considered as the precursors of three-dimensional images and stereoscopes, which enjoyed great success in the nineteenth century. Optical views appear to appear in the 1740s and are living room entertainment. The process developed first in Paris, then London and finally in Germany and was aimed at representing - ideally - the most famous panoramas and landscapes of East and West. Proof with very fresh colors, a trace of crease and dirt without gravity. Chez Mondhare1734-1799 Paris circa 1765 32x46cm une feuille

London: printed for the author, and sold by J. Millan, Bookseller, near Whitehall, 1765. First edition. 8vo. viii, 236, (4, publisher's note and ads) pp. With the half-title. The Thomas W. Streeter copy with his small label on the verso of the front wrapper. Howes R-419: "In these military journals Rogers describes visits to the shores of Lakes Erie and Huron, and a trip from Detroit to the Delaware villages on the Muskingum and to Pittsburgh." Sabin 72725. Vail 563, Field 1315. Thomson 996. Graff 3555. Streeter sale 1029 (this copy, purchased from Goodspeed in 1927): "Published when Rogers was only 34 years old, this is one of the basic sources for the French and Indian War. It begins on September 24, 1755, with an account of a scouting expedition on Lake George and ends on February 14, 1761 when Rogers arrived in New York after having received the surrender of the French at Detroit late in 1760. In the meantime he had been with Amherst at Crown Point in 1757, with Abercrombie at Ticonderoga in 1758, and had been a participant in the campaign around Montreal in 1760. A second volume of the Journal was proposed [in one of the two ad leaves at the rear], but never issued." We have been unable to trace another copy in trade (ABPC and RareBookHub) in the original wrappers. Old oil staining to upper portion of rear wrapper, with some staining to endpapers and the upper margin of text, just touching the text of the last six pages, but a fresh untrimmed copy in the original wrappers, rarely encountered in this state. Engel, Samuel
Lausanne: Antoine Chapuis, 1765. Title in red and black, engraved vignette on dedication page. Two engraved folding maps. Quarto. Contemporary mottled calf, gilt stamp on upper cover. Minor repairs to top and tail of spine. Very good. Provenance: Marinens Bibliothek; deaccessioned by the Garnisions Biblioteket in 2017. Engel availed himself of the most up-to-date geographic intelligence on the region by explorers and cartographers such as Kirilov, Buache, Delisle, and Gmelin, evaluating each in order to come to a more accurate picture of the Arctic. He stated definitively that California was not an island but rather a peninsula and rejected the fantastical Sea of the West asserted by Buache and Delisle. On the other hand, his critiques of Müller's map of Siberia were unfounded, and his understanding of the rivers of Western North America was described by Wagner as characterized by remarkable imagination. The maps are by the Swiss cartographer Jacques Antony Chovin. "Contains accounts of the Cabrillo, De Fonte and De Fuca exploring voyages up the Pacific coast and definitively refuted the conception of Californian insularity" - Howes. Lada-Mocarski notes that Engel "examined diligently the maps and writings of Kirilov (the compiler of the first Russian atlas), Buache, Delisle, Muller, Gmelin, and others - and invariably, with some justification, found something wrong with each of them. He examined these works with regard to the northern parts of both Asia and America. Most of the questions he raised were valid and the present-day student of these regions would profit by read … [Click Below for Full Description]

BARCLAY, Robert
Birmingham : Printed by John Baskerville, and sold by the booksellers of London and Westminster, 1765. - 1765 Robert Barclay QUAKER Apology for Christian Divinity Doctrine Scotland The standard exposition on the principles of Quakerism! Robert Barclay was a 17th-century Scottish Quaker and considered one of the most important Quaker authors. His most important work, ‘An Apology for the True Christian Divinity,’ is often thought to be “the most impressive theological writings of the century and often marked by the eloquence of lofty moral convictions.” (Garnet, 226). ‘Apology’ was written to be an elaborate statement for the Quakers to hold certain religious fundamentals which were outlined in one of Barclay’s earlier works, the ‘Theses.’ According to the DNB, “Barclay's great book, ‘The Apology,’ is remarkable as the standard exposition of the principles of his sect, and is not only the first defense of those principles by a man of trained intelligence, but in many respects one of the most impressive theological writings of the century.” A rare 1765 edition of Barclay’s ‘Apology.’ This edition is the eighth overall English printing of this work but the first published by Baskerville. Item number: #2315 Price: $550 BARCLAY, Robert An apology for the true Christian divinity : being an explanation and vindication of the principles and doctrines of the . Quakers. MABLY (BONNOT, ABBé DE) GABRIEL
pal la Compagnie des Libraires, 1765. Due volumi di cm. 16,5, pp. xx, 453 (1); viii, 427 (1). Graziosa legatura coeva in piena pelle con titoli su tass. e ricchi fregi in oro al dorso; tagli spruzzati. Impercettibile mancanza ad una cuffia. Esemplare fresco e ben conservato. Edizione originale. Cfr. Febres, Andrés.
Lima: en la calle de la Encarnaçion, 1765. Small 8vo (14 cm; 5.5"). [15] ff., 682 pp., [1] ff. First edition of this important book for the study of the Araucanian language (i.e., Mapuche or Mapudungun) of Chile. The contents are a grammar, a dialogue in Araucanian, a short Spanish-to-Araucanian dictionary, the Araucanian alphabet and dipthongs, and Catholic prayers, doctrine, and a brief catechism in Araucanian, plus extended Spanish–Araucanian and Araucanian–Spanish dictionaries. Febres, a Jesuit, was a native of Cataluña who arrived in Chile at a young age. His work among the Araucanian Indians led to his acquiring a great command of their language, and this work still stands as a monument to his erudition. Medina's researches discovered that when the Spanish authorities made their inventory of the Jesuits' library in Chile in 1767, only 255 copies of this book were found, leading him to suppose that the total press run was only 500 copies.    The title-page and the rest of the initial half-signature of the copy in hand are => printed in red and black, but according to Harper (American Iberica, item 476A) some copies do exist printed in black and gold (!), while Medina (Bibliotheca hispano-chilena) says he has seen copies printed in black and green, or perhaps just green. The final leaf here displays a typographic sampling of the press's fonts. There are a few tailpieces — one unusual and a charmer.         Medina, Lima, 1228; Medina, BHC, 461; Viñaza 345; Palau 87065; Sabin 23968; Vargas Ugarte 1923; DeBacker-Sommervogel, III, 576. LAFARGUE DE œuvres mêlées [Histoire géographique de la Nouvelle-Ecosse] Chez Duchesne, Paris 1765, 9 x 16,5 cm, xix (1) 324ppet (2) viij, 359pp., 2 volumes, calf bindingFirst edition, with three fine engravings by Le Mire after Gravelot, a title vignette (repeated) and two headpieces.Polished marbled calf. Spine in compartments. Light brown morocco title and volume labels. Tear with lack to lower joint of foot of spine of volume I. Small lack to upper joint at foot of spine to volume II. The first volume is made up of various bits of occasional verse and other academic poems by Lafargue, as well as a treatise on oratorical pronunciation. Of greater interest is the second volume, which begins with a treatise on the reading and above all translation of the Histoire géographique de la Nouvelle-Ecosse [General History of New Caledonia or Acadia], an anonymous work based in part on Charlevoix's Histoire de la Nouvelle-France [History of New France]. The author gives a precise list of bays, ports, goods and production, a history of the trade there and the importance of its geographical location for the security of New France, since New Caledonia formed a peninsula in front of Quebec. The author also gives an overview of the relations and conflicts between France and Britain over this territory. An important account and without doubt the first on this region of the North-East of Canada, which became home to a number of people from Poitiers, who shaped the language of Acadia, and 12,000 of whom were deported in 1755 … [Click Below for Full Description]

Wallis (John)
Printed by William Bowyer for A. Millar, 1765. title printed in capitals, sectional title to letter to Beverley also set in capitals, with a fine engraved portrait frontispiece, pp. xxxv, [1], 281, [2, ads], 8vo, contemporary tree calf of a reddish hue by Kalthoeber with his ticket, evenly spaced triple gilt fillets on sides with a fleur-de-lys in the corners, rounded spine gilt and lettered direct, inner dentelles with a Greek key patter, yellow edges, minor wear, good. 'In 1653 Wallis published Grammatica linguae Anglicanae, with a treatise De loquela and a Praxis grammatica. This work was often reprinted and has been praised by linguists for its deep insights and careful attention to sounds. De loquela served as a theoretical basis for Wallis's attempts to teach the profoundly deaf how to speak' (ODNB). This is the sixth edition, if we don't count 2 German editions before it. The fine portrait frontispiece of Wallis was drawn especially for the book by Giovanni Battista Cipriani (1727-1785). The presence of a Liberty Cap between the image and the legend betokens the involvement of Thomas Hollis in this edition: he paid for it. Copies are known in proper Hollis bindings, and perhaps the red hue of this binding is a nod to him. This new edition was intended for Continental readers, to enable them to read, in English, the works of English liberty which Hollis was disseminating. Patrick Henry
A rare document, the only one we could find having reached the market, connecting slavery with the man who famously said, “Give me liberty or give me death.” Patrick Henry was elected to the Virginia House of Burgesses in 1765 and soon became its leading radical member. He was one of that colony's opponents of the Stamp Act, and proposed the Virginia Stamp Act Resolutions that challenged the authority of Parliament. One of them, considered treasonous by many, held "that the General Assembly of this Colony have the only and exclusive Right and Power to lay Taxes and Impositions upon the inhabitants of this Colony…" In 1774 Henry represented Virginia at the First Continental Congress in Philadelphia where he continued in the role of firebrand. In early 1775, he took an active leadership role in the Revolution, particularly at the second Virginia Convention at Richmond in March 1775. The Virginia delegates were divided between those who wanted only a peaceful solution to the imperial dispute and those who also were ready to prepare for military resistance. Henry led the call for resistance and introduced a resolution to that effect. He supported its passage with the legendary speech that closed with “Give me liberty or give me death!” Henry carried the day, but by no more than a half dozen votes. Henry was elected to the last of Virginia ’s revolutionary conventions, which met in Williamsburg on May 6, 1776. There he participated in drafting Virginia ’s resolution calling upon Congress to declare the colonies “free and independent states.” After independence … [Click Below for Full Description]
