Lescallier, Daniel
Unpublished manuscript account of Lescallier´s voyage throughout the Spanish part of Santo Domingo, the sole known copy, bound possibly for presentation in contemporary red morocco, and illustrated with four folding manuscript maps of the Island. The illustration is comprised of 4 folding manuscript maps and plans -most with wash colour- all of remarkable quality and beauty: Croquis des passages à gué des principales rivières dans la route du Cap à Santo Domingo par Sentiago; Plan de la ville de Santo Domingo, relevé par Daniel Lescallier en l'année 1764; Petit Yaque dans la plaine de San Juan; Carte itinéraire des deux routes principales de la ville espagnole de Santo Domingo en l'Isle St Domingue. The book contains a complete description of the routes from Daxabon to Santo Domingo, capital of the Spanish part of the Island. The first route took him through Boca de Hamina, Santiago de los Caballeros, and other places, the second was further south: Banica, San Juan, Azua, Baini, Candelaria, Nisao and Jaina. His observations are comprehensive and detailed. Lescallier (1743-1822) was a French Officer of the marine, commissioned mostly to the West Indies; in 1764 he was posted in Santo Domingo for a two-year post under the orders of the Comte d'Estaing, later the Antilles, Demerary, Berbice and other places, always in the quality of French officer to colonies, allowing him access and geographical information. During the years of the Empire he is commissioned as Council of State in charge of the colonies, and later. In 1788 he begins studying vessels, concluding i … [Click Below for Full Description]

DYCHE, THOMAS and William Pardon
London: printed for Catherine and Richard Ware, 1765. Twelfth edition, 8vo, unpaged; text in double columns; modern half calf over marbled boards, gilt spine in 6 compartments, raised bands; text block fore-edge a bit ink-stained, else fine. Because this dictionary stressed departments not found in Bailey, Dyche & Pardon were able to grab a small, loyal share of the growing dictionary market. Their dictionary, aimed at a less educated class than Bailey's, stressed proper accentuation and pronunciation (it was the first of many dictionaries to stress pronunciation); and, anticipating Webster, suggested several improvements in spelling which were subsequently adopted ("physick" to "physic, " for example). Etymology is omitted. The dictionary was begun by Dyche, a schoolmaster, who had two previous non-dictionaries to his credit, A Guide to the English Tongue (1709; 48th ed. by 1774); and, A Dictionary of all the Words Commonly Us'd in the English Tongue (1723), both of which stressed spelling and pronunciation, but gave no definitions. Of William Pardon little is known. The New General English Dictionary is, however, "so different in character from the earlier Dyche works that we are naturally tempted to visit its eccentricities on the unknown Pardon" (see Starnes & Noyes, chapt. XVII). The book incorporates the names and descriptions of hundreds of English and Welsh towns, with their market-days, government, manufactures, distances from London, etc. It was partially due to this gazetteer-like entry that the work remained popular with the public. Le Cat, Claude Nicolas
Ouvrage divisé en trois Parties. Amsterdam (Rouen), o. D., 1765, 8, (2), XIV, 191, (1) pp., Frontispiece von H. Gravelot, 2 Kupferstichvignetten im Text, unbeschnittenes Exemplar im weichen Pappband d. Zt. First edition of the author's interesting speculation of human skin and its many colours. It is here that Le Cat discerned the black deposits which he called "aethiops" in the nerve tissues of animals. "Claude Nicolas Le Cat's (1700-1768) treatise, like Mitchell's essay " An eassay upon the causes of the different colour of people in different climates" of 1744 , contradicts the traditional theory that bile is responsible for coloring human skin. Essentially, Le Cat's work is an extension of Malpighi's theory of skin color. From his experimental studies o the nerve cells of frogs and other animals (see Le Cat s Dissertation sur l'Existence et la Nature du Fluide des Nerfs et Son Action Berlin 1765), Le Cat discerned the presence of a pigment which he called "ethiops" (i.e. melanin). From this he deduced that human skin tissue must contain similar structures and that they may be the cause of skin color. Given me physiological association of "ethiops" with nerve tissue, it appeared to Cat that skin color could not possibly be determined by bile from the liver, pancreas, or gall bladder. While unclear of its origin and its role, he believed there was an intrinsic relation between these "ethiops" structures and the environment, noting that blacks had a greater amount than whites." Frank Spencer, Ecco Homo (1986), p.96 Le Cat was also of the opinion that peoples' skin ca … [Click Below for Full Description]

Berlin, o.V., 1765, 8, (4), 331, (4) pp., mit 2 gestoch. Kopfvignetten und 6 gefalt. Kupferstich-Tafeln, restaurierter Kalbsledereinband der Zeit frisches Exemplar. First edition in book form of two publications that had originally appeared in the collection of prize dissertations of the Royal Academy of Sciences in Berlin, and which are here corrected and much enlarged by the author. "The first deals with the nature and properties of the nervous fluid and its influence on muscular motion, and the second with the sensibility of the meninges, and the insensibility of the brain and the structure of the nerves, ending with a criticism of Haller's theory of irritability. These texts are of importance for the theories of muscular contraction and nerve conduction at the time which preceded Galvani's experiments to stimulate muscles and nerves by electricity. Charles Nicolas Le Cat (1700-1768) was also one of the chief writers before the nineteenth century on spina bifida, illustrated on two of the plates.Claude Nicolas Le Cat (1700-1768) "in 1751 resected a malignant tumor of the first four lumbar vertebrate which had developed at the site of an earlier injury and which, in all probability, was a primary neoplasm."
