ARGENSON, (R.L. DE VOYER D'.)
A Amsterdam, Chez Marc Michel Rey, 1765. Title-page printed in red and black and with title vignette. xvi, 328 pp. 8vo. Contemporary half calf, spine gilt, marbled boards, vellum corners. Menger 544; Stourm, p. 107; Higgs 3368; not in Kress, not in Goldsmiths; not in Einaudi; Renouvin, Assemblées provinciales, pp. 31-36; Lichtenberger, Le Socialisme au XVIIIe siècle, pp. 93-103. Second edition, first issue. This second edition has two issues: one with an errata-leaf (pp. xv-xvi) and numbered preliminaries, the second issue has no errata-leaf while the errata are corrected and the preliminaries are unnumbered. The original title was to be: "Jusqu'ou la démocratie peut s'étendre dans un Etat monarchique", but this was changed into the title under which the book is now known. The text was substantially modified for the French market and the text also made more moderate, but even after these alterations the book was and remained forbidden and prosecuted. In this book, D'Argenson tries to establish the principles of democratic and municipal government and he is considered by Lichtenberger as one of the forerunners of the great social and economic reforms of later ages. The work was severely prosecuted in France, but M.M. Rey printed at least three different editions during the years 1764-1765. René-Louis de Voyer de Paulmy, Marquis d'Argenson (1694-1757), French writer on economic and political subjects. The main principle in d'Argenson's philosophy was universal liberalism- 'not too much government' (pas trop gouverner). In politics the 'democracy' which he wished to 'admit int … [Click Below for Full Description]

Le Cat, Claude Nicolas
Ouvrage divisé en trois Parties. Amsterdam (Rouen), o. D., 1765, 8°, (2), XIV, 191, (1) pp., Frontispiece von H. Gravelot, 2 Kupferstichvignetten im Text, unbeschnittenes Exemplar im weichen Pappband d. Zt. First edition of the author's interesting speculation of human skin and its many colours. It is here that Le Cat discerned the black deposits which he called "aethiops" in the nerve tissues of animals. "Claude Nicolas Le Cat's (1700-1768) treatise, like Mitchell's essay " An eassay upon the causes of the different colour of people in different climates" of 1744 , contradicts the traditional theory that bile is responsible for coloring human skin. Essentially, Le Cat's work is an extension of Malpighi's theory of skin color. From his experimental studies o the nerve cells of frogs and other animals (see Le Cat s Dissertation sur l'Existence et la Nature du Fluide des Nerfs et Son Action Berlin 1765), Le Cat discerned the presence of a pigment which he called "ethiops" (i.e. melanin). From this he deduced that human skin tissue must contain similar structures and that they may be the cause of skin color. Given me physiological association of "ethiops" with nerve tissue, it appeared to Cat that skin color could not possibly be determined by bile from the liver, pancreas, or gall bladder. While unclear of its origin and its role, he believed there was an intrinsic relation between these "ethiops" structures and the environment, noting that blacks had a greater amount than whites." Frank Spencer, Ecco Homo (1986), p.96 Le Cat was also of the opinion that peoples' skin can cha … [Click Below for Full Description]

STEVENS, George Alexander ]
London: For J. Pridden [1765.]. Folio, stitched, uncut. Pp. 9, (1). Folding engraved frontis. Creased at center, with a light stain at inner margin. A very good copy. "Fifth edition." An early folio edition from the first year of publication of an oft-printed comic staple of 18th century theater, generally cited as the first English comic monologue. Stevens was an actor and author of a libertine bent, who scored a huge success with this parody of an academic lecture on physiognomy, propped with fifty-one papier mache heads. He played it throughout his career, touring England, Ireland and America, and it was widely imitated and reprinted into the 19th century. The imposing frontispiece, dated September 25, 1765 in the plate, recreates Steven's presentation for posterity, showing him before his collection of exemplary heads. Of this edition, ESTC locates the BL copy only, stating in error "first published... in 1764," but failing to record any such edition, and indeed none exists with that date. A total of four of these folio editions printed in double columns were issued by Pridden, two undated, including the present "fifth" edition, which may well be the first such, and two from 1766. All are rare..

Paris -1775, 1765. The complete set of sixteen copper plate engravings (sheet size 97 x 64.5 cm.) by L.J. Masquelier (1), J. Aliamet (2), J.Ph. le Bas (5), A. St.-Aubin (2), F.D. Née (1), B.L. Prevost (2), P.P. Choffard (2), and N. de Launay (1), produced under the supervision of Charles-Nicholas Cochin, some restoration to margins, very good impressions. The extremely rare set of plates commissioned by K'ien-Lung, Emperor of China (1735-1795) to celebrate his first campaign victory. "The prints are from the plates prepared for K'ien-Lung, Emperor of China, produced officially in an edition of 200 copies for his personal distribution. However, evidence is that prints were pulled for the King of France and influential persons in Paris as well. The drawings were made in China under detailed orders from K'ien-Lung by three Jesuit and one Augustinian missionary artists after palace paintings in the 1760s, and forwarded to Paris for reproduction under the direction of Charles-Nicolas Cochin, "Cochin fils". French sensibility to the artistic requirements of engravings for imperial distribution resulted in delays while the drawings were "improved," but all the plates and prints were finally sent to China by 1775." (Getty Museum). The battle-pieces are not only outstanding pieces of art, but also form an important visual source on military history and evidence of the cultural exchange between the East and the West - K'ien-Lung was inspired to commission the series after seeing engravings of battle scenes executed by the German Georg Philipp Rugendas.
